Welcome to the 31st Annual Duluth Fall Festival

50 Years of Festivals in Duluth The Duluth Fall Festival organization invites you to visit Historic Downtown Duluth Thursday, September 26 through Sunday, September 29 for the Gold Medal Shows carnival and the Duluth Fall Festival. Since the first annual Festival, in 1983, the last weekend in September has created a high level of excitement, pride, and optimism focused on Downtown Duluth. Although 2013 is the 31st anniversary of the annual Duluth Fall Festival, the roots grow even deeper. In 1962, 51 years ago, the very first festival was held in the streets of Downtown Duluth. That festival lasted for five weekends and spotlighted the town’s history. It was a big success and brought the town together. Another successful festival was held in 1976 to celebrate the

centennial of Duluth’s charter, and the bicentennial of our nation. These first two festivals evolved into the wonderful Festival that we have today. Gold Medal Shows Carnival Gold Medal Shows’ carnival opens pre-Festival, Thursday and Friday, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., and then continues Saturday and Sunday until the end of the Festival. Special Offer for Thursday and Friday only: Gold Medal Shows is offering a buy 1 get 1 free armband for unlimited rides. Print a coupon at www.duluthfallfestival. org. You must present the coupon to get this offer. Duluth Fall Festival Both Saturday and Sunday start with a special opening event kicking off the day’s festivities. Saturday, at 10 a.m., the Festival officially opens, starting with a fantastic parade celebrating Duluth’s sense of

community. The parade features more than 100 colorful groups, including: drill teams, cheerleaders, sports teams, dance troupes, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, politicians, first responders, soldiers and musicians. Participants travel the parade route tossing candy and waving to spectators. Immediately after the parade, join us at the Duluth Festival Center Amphitheatre to honor local dignitaries and generous sponsors in the Opening Ceremony. Sunday, at 8 a.m., the day starts with a 5K Road Race, promising this year to be bigger than ever. The race is followed by an outdoor worship service at the Duluth Festival Center led by Duluth First United Methodist Church. See Highlights of the Festival Below We hope that you plan on spending the whole weekend with us. Continued on Page 5

About the Duluth Fall Festival

Beautification of Duluth Proceeds from the Festival are used towards improving and beautifying Historic Downtown Duluth. The Festival has spearheaded numerous special projects, including purchasing and developing Taylor Park, paving and landscaping the Festival Center Courtyard and “Parsons’ Alley,” increasing the size of the public restrooms, purchasing planters, installing the Eastern Continental Divide Monument, and much more. By far, the largest Festival undertaking was building the Duluth Festival Center Amphitheatre. It was built as a complementary addition to the city’s Town Green. Community Fellowship Developing relationships and promoting fellowship is another important goal of the Festival. In a world where many people don’t know their own neighbor and seek community roots, the Festival is proud to provide a pathway for developing life-long friendships and community connections. To promote these budding friendships, the Festival organization sponsors many activities throughout the year, including: monthly meetings, downtown work days, a Summer Rally, an annual cookout, the Festival Taste of Duluth, a community luncheon (for sponsors, volunteers, city workers,

first responders, and others), and a community Christmas Tree Lighting. Growth of the Duluth Fall Festival The Duluth Fall Festival celebrates its 31st anniversary this year. From its humble beginning in 1983, the Festival has grown and changed immensely. The following list shows the growth in numbers: • Committees have grown from 4 to more than 50 • Volunteers have increased from 25 to almost 400 • Arts & Crafts and Food booths have grown from 40 to more than 350 • Attendance has grown from a handful of people to upwards of 80,000 In 1985, the first official T-shirts were donated by Tom Martin of Citizen’s Bank. They are still a much sought-after item, and many sponsors join the Festival ranks just to get their names on the shirt. The Sponsorship committee was created in 1997, and now the Festival has about 140 sponsors who, when combined, contribute more than $135,000 each year. Today, the Duluth Fall Festival is one of the most successful festivals in the southeast, and, one of the few festivals of this size that is run completely by volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering with the Festival, we would love to have you. For more information, see the Volunteers menu on the website at www.duluthfallfestival.org.

About the Cover

Getting Help

Since 1985, all tabloid covers have featured Duluth or fall-themed artwork created by a local artist. This year’s cover was created by lifelong Duluth resident Ann Parsons Odum. Over the years, Ann’s paintings have been used many times. Ann will be selling her book on Duluth History, featuring her Duluth paintings, at the Festival General Store with proceeds going to projects of the Festival Committee.

About the Festival T-Shirt

Each year, the Festival T-shirt color is a long anticipated surprise. The 2013 T-shirt design and the Duluth Fall Festival logo were created by Duluth resident Cindy Sutt of Rock, Paper, Scissors. The color of the shirt is always selected by the current Festival Chairperson (this year Jim Adkins)

If you need help while you are visiting the Festival, need assistance locating a specific vendor, or if you lose an item (or a child), stop by the Information, Lost, & Found booth located on Main Street in front of the General Store. You can also ask any volunteer for assistance. First aid is available at the Gwinnett Hospital System Care-A-Van located behind Huthmaker’s Violins.

Parade The traditional Duluth Fall Festival Parade, sponsored by Gwinnett Medical Center Foundation, kicks off the Festival at 10 a.m. Saturday morning (arrive early as some streets will be closed and parking is limited). More than 100 groups will participate in the Parade, including: cheerleaders, sports teams, dance troupes, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, politicians, first responders and musicians. This year’s parade will also include classic cars, an old fashioned horse and carriage, and will end with a visit from Santa. Duluth’s two High Schools, Duluth and Peachtree Ridge, will be represented by

their respective marching bands and orchestra – yes a marching orchestra. Come see the groups and organizations that make up the Duluth community and bring a bag to catch all the candy. To get a good spot and avoid traffic congestion, take the shuttle, and arrive by 9:30 a.m. Shuttle stops can be found on our website, www. duluthfallfestival.com Parade Route: The Parade starts on Main Street (near the Monarch School), continues south and east to Highway 120, turns south to Buford Highway, and ends at Hardy Industrial Boulevard (see the Duluth Fall

Festival map). Grand Marshal Grand Marshal of the 2013 Parade is Georgia Governor Nathan Deal. Since taking office, Governor Deal has worked tirelessly to make Georgia the Number 1 place in the nation to do business, a

goal he’s strived toward by creating the Competitiveness Initiative, reforming the tax code and recruiting businesses to relocate to Georgia. Gov. Deal’s public service to his state spans four decades. The Sandersville native served in the U.S. Army at Fort Gordon in Augusta after graduating with a law degree from Mercer University, and then began a private law practice in Gainesville, the hometown of his wife, Sandra Dunagan Deal. While his wife taught in Hall County public schools, the governor began a long span of service to his

community as prosecutor, judge, state senator and U.S. congressman. During his 17 years in Congress, Deal rose to chair the Health Subcommittee of Energy and Commerce, where he became a noted expert on entitlement reform and health care policy. Deal ended his congressional career to campaign for governor, becoming the Republican nominee in August 2010 and then winning the governorship in November of that year. Deal took the oath of office as Georgia’s 82nd governor on Jan. 10, 2011. The governor and first

lady have four adult children and six grandchildren. Honorary Grand Marshals and Military The Festival Committee is proud to name the following three army officers currently stationed at Fort Benning as Honorary Grand Marshals: Colonel Kenneth Harvey Colonel John Hermeling Lieutenant Colonel Nelson Kraft In 2003, Col. Ken Harvey was the Battalion Operations Officer for the 2-69AR, the first group of soldiers to march in the Parade. Col. Harvey returned to the Festival in 2004, as the Executive Officer of the 1-15 Infantry, 3rd

Arts & Crafts More than 250 artisans and crafts persons will have booths at the Duluth Fall Festival this year. Vendors offer a variety of merchandise, including: paintings, photographs, wood crafts, pottery, glassware, furniture, floral arrangements, stitchery, candles, soap, decorative accessories, baskets, clothing (for adults, children, dollies, and doggies!), jewelry, toys, and more. Several Arts & Crafts vendors return to the Festival year after year (Bill Crissey, of Gwinnett Gallery has participated in all 31 Festivals!). The Arts & Crafts committee works hard to have a unique variety of merchandise. This year, the committee reviewed more than 330 vendor applications. Vendors come from the local area, across the southeast, and as far away as Texas and Ohio. When possible, returning vendors are located in the same place. If you have trouble finding your favorite vendor, visit the Information Booth on Main Street or ask a Zone Coordinator (a volunteer with a walkie–talkie) for help.

Carnival and Games

Kids 7 and under will find inflatable slides, “bounce” houses, and other activities. While in the area, you won’t go hungry; the Midway features cotton candy, caramel apples, snow cones and other favorites. Booths nearby will be selling popcorn, drinks and standard festival fare. Gold Medal Show’s carnival opens pre-Festival, Thursday and Friday, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., and then continues Saturday and Sunday until the end of the Festival.

Kids of all ages can find a variety of amusements in the Festival’s Carnival and Games area (Main Street, across from City Hall). Gold Medal Shows hosts a family-oriented carnival, with a variety of rides and games. Be sure

to take a ride on the Ferris wheel, where you can get a bird’s eye view of the continually changing Duluth skyline. Other exciting rides include the Orient Express, the Dizzy Dragon, Rio Grande train, swings and much more.

Yummy Food!

Come hungry, but you won’t go home hungry! With more than 40 food booths, you are certain to find many treats to please your palate. Start with an entrée, such as a corndog, pierogie, gyro or fried ‘gator. As always, the Fall Festival’s own hotdog stand, featuring our famous “Big Pickle” will be here, too.

Man’s Corner at the Duluth Fall Festival is dedicated to and for men, with the products and services that they love – no “lace” allowed! At Man’s Corner, you can watch a big-screen TV with satellite reception tuned in to football games. Other features include: Howard Brothers’ zero-turn mowers and Stihl power tools, Big Green Eggs, John Deere Gators, and a putting green from

Georgia Trail. You will also find representatives from your favorite sports teams. Follow the signs to Man’s Corner (between the Festival Center Stage and Duluth City Hall), for a great time! Walter Reeves, The Georgia Gardner™ will appear in Man’s Corner on Saturday from 11:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Wash it down with a glass of lemonade, cream soda, slushy or milkshake. Top it off with your favorite sweet indulgence—perhaps a funnel cake, apple dumpling, or sno cone. And, don’t forget to snack on some kettle corn while you browse. With all of these culinary opportunities, you can eat your way around the Festival. When you are ready to take a break, get your food “To Go” and relax at one of two picnic areas while you enjoy the entertainment at one of our two stages.

General Store & Auction

The Fall Festival General Store invites you to stop by and browse for all things Fall. The General Store has an extensive and interesting array of fall merchandise as well as Festival T-Shirts from previous years. You can also find a collection of Festival Tabloids; they provide an amazing look at the evolution of the Festival as well as Duluth. Besides being your Festival

merchandise headquarters, the General Store tent is also an easily spotted landmark and meeting place. It is centrally located on Main Street, decorated with mums, pumpkins and scarecrows. Auction: Be sure to go to the General Store at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday when Brooks Coleman auctions off the mums and pumpkins used to decorate the Festival.

Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, and in 2008, as its Battalion Commander. In 2005, 2006 and 2010 when Col. Harvey was deployed to Iraq, his wife, Janice, along with their four children (Kate, Jake, Emily and Zack) attended the Duluth Fall Festival on their own. Col. Harvey said one of his fondest memories of the Festival is “Seeing the impact on my children. They have grown up hearing repeated comments about military families and their sacrifice. In coming to Duluth Fall Festival, they saw a community without any real military ties express heartfelt thanks to soldiers and

their families. My family was thanked by innumerable people for the separations they have endured. It was a validation that our nation appreciates our military families.” Col. Harvey has deployed to Iraq four times, and just returned in June with the Office of Security Cooperation. He currently serves as the Director of the Concept Developments Division, Fort Benning, a position that determines what armor and infantry units will look like and how they will fight in the next 10-20 years. In 2008, Col. John Hermeling was LTC Hermeling when he brought Soldiers of

the 1-75 Battalion, 2nd Calvary Brigade, 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell to the Festival. Initially, “We received an amazing show of support! People told the soldiers how proud they were of their service and thanked them.” He, his wife, Wendy, and their children are excited about returning to Duluth. Col. Hermeling serves at Fort Benning as Deputy Commandant, Armor School. In 2011, when LTC Nelson Kraft first came to Duluth, he was Battalion Commander of the 1-15. Kraft was “outright amazed and had never been anywhere where support for the Soldiers was so incredible.” Kraft wasn’t able to make the

2012 Festival because the 1-15 was deployed, but his wife, Kathy, and their two children, Madelynn and Nate, attended in his place. The entire Kraft Family will be here again, and Kraft and daughter plan to run in the 5K Race. Kraft serves as the Chief of Tactics for the US Army Maneuver Center of Excellence. LTC Scott Mueller is the current Commander of the 1-15 Battalion and will be marching with his men in the Parade. LTC Mueller has deployed to Iraq twice: during “The Surge” in 2007-2008, and in 2009-2010 to transition responsibility to the Iraqi government. LTC Mueller,

wife, Francy, and their three sons, Riley, Cooper and Brody are looking forward to Duluth Fall Festival and “wouldn’t miss it for the world!” In 2003, when Operation Iraqi Freedom was raging, volunteers Kathy Orcutt and Russ Sheldon suggested that the Festival invite troops to march in the Parade and then honor them during the Opening Ceremony. Ten years later, a strong bond has formed between the Fort Benning soldiers and the Duluth Fall Festival. You can find soldiers from the 1-15 Infantry at the Hugs for Our Soldiers booth located on Town Green. Please take time to shake the hand (or get
