Complexions Ballet launching inaugural Gwinnett season By Katie Morris
katie.morris @gwinnettdailypost.com
Since its founding in 1994, Complexions Contemporary Ballet has performed on five continents, in 25 countries and for more than 300,000 people. Now the prestigious ballet company is bringing its unique, diverse form of dance to Gwinnett. Complexions is expanding outside its home in New York City, establishing a new office in Suwanee and launching its inaugural Gwinnett season with performances Oct. 9 and 10 at the Infinite Energy Theater. The expansion is part of the company’s Beyond 20 campaign, a strategic long-term plan to grow the company on a national scale, which will include performances across the country during its 2015-16 season. Complexions Co-Founders and Artistic Directors, Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson, scouted various cities for the expansion before setting their sights on the Atlanta area, and through the support of board members and friends they were able to extend into Gwinnett. “Desmond and I have always really loved the Atlanta area and it also seemed to be a very, very rich arts community,” Rhoden said. “We have a support system down there that was very encouraging and really wanted this to happen, and we thought this was the perfect time for Complexions.” Complexions celebrated its 20th anniversary last

year, and Rhoden said it’s been amazing to watch the organization grow into a world renowned ballet company over the years. He describes Complexions as a multi-cultural company that prides itself on bringing audiences diversity on every level, from movement and music to style and method. “Our company is classically-based, and the dancers are all classically trained,” Rhoden said. “We do works that are on pointe: we don’t do classical works, but we do neo-classical and very contemporary works. We do works that are steeped
in almost every tradition. It’s very much a melange of styles, colors, qualities and textures really.” Richardson is from South Carolina and has family in the Atlanta area; he’s become familiar with Gwinnett, visiting regularly in preparation for the expansion. “As I’ve been coming back and forth down there, I’ve been saying, ‘Wow, I didn’t really realize how diverse it is,’ in terms of the arts and the people and the community,” he said. Richardson feels Complexions’ distinctive brand of “beauty through diversity” will be a nice
compliment to the area, and both he and Rhoden are looking forward to Complexions becoming a part of the community. “We have high hopes for really trying to be a part the Atlanta arts community and to enrich it and let it enrich us,” Rhoden said. “We really want an exchange.” The company’s unique brand of ballet is reflected in its upcoming program, which features an array of pieces, including the U.S. premiere of the neo-classical work “And So It Is …,” set en pointe to the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, and the world premiere of
the piece “Strum,” featuring 14 dancers moving to the music of legendary Metal band Metallica. Audiences will also see the world premiere of “Imprint/Maya,” created by Rhoden and performed by Richardson as part of the new ongoing Icon Series honoring iconic historical figures. The piece honors the work of author, poet, dancer, actress and singer, Dr. Maya Angelou. “The powerful messages in her writing are pretty universal, and everyone can get something from that,” Richardson said. “We thought, ‘Wow, that is super perfect for Complex-
ions.’” Gwinnett can count on more Complexions programs to come because Rhoden and Richardson plan on the season becoming an annual event, along with an annual spring season in Atlanta. “We’re very excited to bring our company to this area, and I’m very excited about introducing our brand of contemporary ballet,” Rhoden said. “It’s a very exciting time for Complexions, and I’m really happy that the Atlanta area is where we are expanding into. It feels right and we’re excited to get it going.”

Fernbank hosting exhibits on historical, modern women By Polly Ouellette Staff Intern
Since the beginning, the role of women in the world’s history has been significant, and two complementary traveling exhibits featuring the stories and work of historic and modern women will be visiting the Fernbank Museum of Natural History beginning on Saturday, Sept. 26. Visitors to Fernbank have the opportunity this fall to investigate the stories of one of the most mysterious women in history at the world premiere of “Searching for the Queen of Sheba,” as well as view nearly 100 photographs from 11 awardwinning female photojournalists featured in “Women of Vision: National Geographic Photographers on Assignment.” “Searching for the Queen of Sheba” delves into the legends and tales of the Queen of Sheba that are centuries old and span many different cultures. The Queen of Sheba is known by different names in different texts and religions, but she is mentioned in the Koran, the Bible, the Ethio-

‘Cirque Dreams Holidaze’ bringing holiday cheer to Fox By Katie Morris
katie.morris @gwinnettdailypost.com
When Cirque Dreams founder Neil Goldberg set out to create a holiday show, he wanted it to be a unique experience that could entertain audiences of all ages, especially youngsters. “I’m a kid at heart and have been a daydream since I was a young child, and I think kids love to dream and imagine and are fascinated not by what they know, but what they don’t know,” he said. “It’s a rarity to be able to go experience entertainment with youngsters and parents and grandparents, and everyone walk out of there fulfilled and gratified with the level of entertainment for their personal desires.” He also wanted the show to be a stage spectacle filled with amazing feats, vibrant costumes, hi-energy performers, singing, dancing and festive sets. “With ‘Cirque Dreams Holidaze’ you never know what’s going to happen next,” Goldberg said. “You just know there’s going to be two hours of celebrating the holiday season and bringing it to life in a way
