Celtic Thunder storms into Fox Theatre BY JON GALLO
Staff Correspondent
Maybe it’s because Atlanta is very much a working-class city, or perhaps it’s because of the city’s eclectic music scene. Or possibly, it’s because Southerners tend to enjoy listening to songs about love, loss and happiness. “I don’t know the exact reason why people in Atlanta identify with Celtic Thunder,” said Emmet Cahill, who’s in the vocal quintet from Ireland that’s been named Billboard’s top world album artist four times and ranked in the world album chart’s top 10 annually since 2008. “I’ve really thought about it and just don’t know. Atlanta doesn’t have the number of Irish as Boston or New York. But every time we have a show here, the crowd has been great.” He should know. Cahill, a tenor, spent three and a half years touring the globe and churning out three No. 1 albums on the world Billboard chart with Celtic Thunder before leaving the group to embark on a solo career in 2014. Now he’s back with the Celtic Thunder for a second stint after concluding his tour that included a performance at the Red Clay Music Foundry in Duluth last March. “When I was with Celtic Thunder, I didn’t have to worry about anything — just pick up the microphone and sing,” he said during a phone interview earlier this month. “But when I was touring alone, I was the show. Fernbank Museum brings Jurassic Park to Atlanta BY JON GALLO

Jennifer Grant Warner has seen countless exhibits at the Fernbank Museum of Natural History, where she’s worked for the past 17 years. But she isn’t sure if she’s ever witnessed any with the magnitude of the current one, “The World’s Largest Dinosaurs.” “I can’t say if it’s the biggest one we’ve ever had,” Fernbank’s executive vice president and chief programming officer said. “It ranks pretty high near the top of the list.” “The World’s Largest Dinosaurs,” which runs through Jan. 2, transforms Fernbank into Atlanta’s own Jurassic Park, as the exhibition focuses on sauropods — the four-legged behemoths known for their enormous necks and tails, smaller heads and plantbased diets that roamed the earth about 150 million years ago. While the Brontosaurus may be the most popular sauropod, there were plenty of other massive monsters that make today’s elephants look like poodles. “We wanted to peel back the curtain so people can see and learn about other dinosaurs that they may not have known existed,” Grant Warner said. “People are intrigued by

dinosaurs because to think that they one day ruled the earth is mind-boggling.” And while the featured dinosaurs such as the Mamenchisaurus, Supersaurus and Camarasaurus aren’t as popular today as the carnivorous Tyrannosaurus rexes, Triceratops and velociraptors that have been glamorized by Hol-
lywood on the big screen, it doesn’t mean they are any less impressive. The exhibition includes an 11-foot-tall, 60-footlong female Mamenchisaurus, in which half of its body is covered with skin while the other half displays its internal organs and bone structure. There’s also a 6-foot tall
femur of an adult Camarasaurus, which weighed about 22 tons, as well as a 15-foot replica of a hind leg of a Supersaurus, which grew to be about 110 feet long and weigh in excess of 35 tons. And then there’s the Argentinosaurus, which is the largest dinosaur ever classified at more than 123-feet long and more than 100 tons. The herbivore, which was discovered in Argentina, welcomes visitors upon entering Fernbank. “Dinosaurs captivate people’s imagination and they’ve always been a big part of Fernbank’s exhibits,” Grant Warner said. “I’m not sure a lot
of people know just how big these dinosaurs really are. People will get to see how they ate and how their muscles worked so they could move around. People will be surprised when they learn how much these sauropods needed to eat every day.” The exhibit doesn’t just tell visitors how much food a sauropod consumes — it shows them through a 5 1/2-foot cube filled with about 1,000 pounds of plants to represent how much these beasts ate in a single day. However, “The World’s Largest Dinosaurs” is as much an educational tool as it is a visual spectacle. Visitors will learn about
the sauropods’ relatively small brains, body structure, organs and respiratory systems. They’ll also get the chance to feed a sauropod through an interactive demonstration, in addition to seeing what happened to the food upon consumption. Visitors also can feel the force in which a sauropod’s heart beats. “We made a conscious decision to have this exhibition during the school year because the exhibit is educational and we want students to take field trips,” Grant Warner said. “Dinosaurs are perennial favorites with kids and they really inspire them and help them think about the world around them.”

Couple sees fairy tale ending with Disney on Ice ‘Follow Your Heart’ show coming to Philips Arena BY JON GALLO

Staff Correspondent
Before becoming a Disney princess, marrying her prince and becoming professional ice skater, Jessica Hatfield’s fairy tale started at a place that will never be mistaken for the Magic Kingdom: the Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit of Saint Clare’s Hospital in New Jersey. “Let’s just say I saw some things you don’t see every day,” she said when asked about her nursing days eight years ago. “There are things you see that you just don’t want to talk about.” Hatfield, however, has plenty to say about her current job, one that couldn’t possibly be more different than working at a medical facility that treats adults who suffer from mental illness and exhibit a danger to themselves or others. When her skates aren’t laced up, she’s Jessica, a 30-year-old from Morris Plains, N.J., and wife of Brendyn Hatfield, a 31-yearold from Renton, Wash. But when she hits the ice, she becomes Princess Jasmine and Brendyn transforms into, of course, Aladdin, as the couple skates together during “Disney on Ice: Follow Your Heart,” which has 10 shows at Philips Arena Oct. 5-9. “It’s like being a kid again because you’re a prince and you’re with your princess,” Brendyn said. “Every day is like a being in a Disney movie.” Jessica and Brendyn are among 60 characters in

“Follow Your Heart,” which brings Dory, Marlin and Hank — the stars of the hit movie “Finding Dory” — and the characters from the blockbuster “Inside Out” — Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust — to “Disney on Ice” for the first time. The Emotions help a girl gain the confidence to win a hockey championship and grow up, but that’s just one story line. Spectators will take a trip to Arendelle and see Elsa, Ana, Kristoff and Olaf of “Frozen,” as well as “Toy Story” pals Buzz Lightyear and Woody. And no Disney show would be complete without princesses like Cinderella, Rapunzel and Snow White, not to mention Disney’s Fantastic Five — Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Pluto and Goofy. Jessica and Brendyn, who have both been skating since they were kids, met when they each took a similar risk. Jessica was putting the nursing degree she earned at William Paterson University to good use at St. Clare’s, but her love of skating never

went away. “In 2008, I sent out a bunch of audition tapes and I got a call to be in the cast of Holiday on Ice,” she said. “They were based in Europe and I wanted to go out and see the world.” The next year, she met Brendyn, who joined the cast after he decided to pursue a career using skates instead of the media management degree he earned from the University of Colorado. “I just wasn’t ready to give up skating,” said Brendyn, who picked up the sport when he was 6.
Six years, a wedding and performing so many times in so many cities they’d lost count, Jessica and Brendyn reached a crossroads. They were nearing their 30s, living out of a suitcase and their bodies were feeling the grind that came from years of performing numerous shows daily. “We were close to retiring from skating,” Brendyn said. But last year, Disney made them an offer they couldn’t refuse — jobs as Jasmine and Aladdin in “Let’s Celebrate.” “Coming to Disney

sparked the love we have for skating and how rewarding it is to perform,” Brendyn said. Jessica added: “Being a part of Disney inspires me to go out there and give the audience everything I have because some of the kids in the crowd are seeing Disney characters in front of them for the first time. When you skate out onto the ice, you see all these kids smiling, and there’s nothing more rewarding to me.” Jessica and Brendyn are a perfect fit together on the ice, especially when they
skate together during “A Whole New World,” the hit song from “Aladdin.” “The skate we have together has a lot of acrobatics and twists and you have to trust your partner,” said Jessica, who has been skating since she was 5. “And my husband is my partner.” The Hatfields aren’t exactly sure how long they want to keep making a living portraying a cartoon couple. “I remember watching Jasmine in the movie “Aladdin” when I was younger,” Jessica said. “Now, I get to be her. It’s crazy, isn’t it?”

‘The Illusionists — Live From Broadway’ to play the Fox By Jon Gallo

Jeff Hobson at least wanted to be polite when he took a call from Simon Painter, a well-known producer with a plan. “He told me that he wanted to put on a magic show,” said Hobson, who has been performing in Las Vegas, on tours and on television for decades. “I asked him to tell me about it while the other half of my face is yawning. He said he wanted to bring together the best magicians in the country and have the best magic show in history. The next thing I know, we’re at the Sydney Opera House.” Nearly five years later, “The Illusionists — Live From Broadway” has played in more than 50 cities in 15 countries, with the tour scheduled for eight shows at the Fox Theatre from Sept. 27 to Oct. 2. The show’s seven performers have left capacity crowds in amazement since they joined forces to form what’s essentially the magic and illusion industry’s equivalent of the NBA’s Dream Team. “Everyone in this group knows how to do a show,” said Hobson, 54. “But when we all come together you can see all sides of magic, whether it’s the funny side, the darker side or the suspenseful side. Andrea Bocelli to bring love songs to Gwinnett BY JON GALLO

The list of those who have seen tenor Andrea Bocelli perform is impressive: four U.S. presidents, three popes, the British royal family and several prime ministers. Now, locals have the chance to see the world’s most famous opera singer when he comes to the Infinite Energy Arena in Duluth on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, at 8 p.m. Bocelli, a 58-year-old native of Lajatico, Italy, who has sold more than 80 million albums, will perform his most iconic arias, crossover hits, love songs and music from his latest album, “Cinema,” which features songs from famous movies of the 20th century. Songs from the album include “La Chanson de Lara” (“Lara’s Theme” from “Dr. Zhivago”), “Maria” (from “West Side Story”), “Moon River” (from “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”) “No Llores Por Mi Argentina” (“Don’t Cry

It is ‘utility music”’ because it gives a sound to images, but it can also represent an exciting challenge for composers, and turn, sometimes into masterpieces, into songs that live independently and … go beyond all generational barriers, becoming real immortal classics.”
Florida Georgia Line cruises into Aaron’s Amphitheatre BY JON GALLO
IF YOU GO
Staff Correspondent
Florida Georgia Line has gone from cruising to digging. The duo of Tyler Hubbard of Monroe, Ga., and Bryan Kelley of Ormond Beach, Fla., yet again masterfully fused country, rock, pop and hip-hop to produce their third album that reached the top spot on Billboard’s Country Albums chart. But unlike its previous records, Florida Georgia Line’s latest release, “Dig Your Roots,” focuses more on family, religion and leaving a legacy — a much different approach than the band’s debut album four years ago, “Here’s to the Good Times” that emphasized a more carefree lifestyle as featured in the smash hit “Cruise.” “With every record, we’ve tried to show where we’re at that year,” Hubbard told Entertainment Weekly. “Our lives have changed pretty drastically over the record cycles. (So) it’s fun to see the evolution, to go back to the old records and see the good times and then listen to the new record and see the place we’re at now — and to have the fans come along with us.” And have they ever. “Dig Your Roots” sold 126,000 copies during its launch week in early September, according to Nielsen Music. Though the album didn’t sell as many as Florida Georgia Line’s predecessor “Anything Goes,” which sold 197,000 to enter the top spot on the Billboard chart on Nov. 1, 2014, “Dig Your Roots’” sales in its first week

easily surpassed the 63,000 of the band’s 2012 debut album, “Here’s to the Good Times,” which ultimately spent 10 weeks atop the chart during the summer of 2013. “It feels so amazing to have the No. 1 album,” Hubbard told Billboard. “We’ve poured our heart into this project and to see the fans react the way they have is unbelievable.” Florida Georgia Line, which has sold more than 3.5 million albums worldwide, will give fans an up close and personal look at its music when the duo performs at Aaron’s Amphitheatre at Lakewood in Atlanta on Oct. 22 as part of their nationwide tour to promote one of the country’s hottest albums. “We could not be more proud and excited about this fantastic musical body of work,” Big Machine Label Group EVP/Republic Nashville President Jimmy Harnen told Billbaord. “From the first time we sat down to listen to the music back in December, we all knew what a great journey we were about to partake in. The No. 1 album is simply the beginning.” The band, which sold more than 1.5 million con-
cert tickets in 2015 alone, burst onto the scene with “Cruise,” which spent 24 weeks atop Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart spanning from 2012-2013, breaking the record set by Lee Roy Van Dyke’s “Walk on By,” which held the top spot for 19 weeks from 1961-62. “Cruise,” however, evolved into more than a song for country music fans, as a remix of the song that included the rapper Nelly elevated it to No. 4 on Billboard’s Hot 100. Cruise is the first single in country music history to sell more than 10 million copies. The first single from the new release, “H.O.L.Y.,” ruled the Hot Country Songs chart for 18 weeks — the third-longest reign in the survey’s 58-year history — before being pumped to second behind Kelsea Ballerini’s “Peter Pan.” “Our fans continue to keep blowing our minds. It’s absolutely crazy,” Kelley told Entertainment Focus. “Just when we think things can’t get any better, we release a song like H.O.L.Y. and it connects us to our fans on a very, very special level. It’s a really cool moment in our set when we’re all connected on the same frequency. You look out and

They’re screaming the words back to us and it’s a good feeling.” When Florida Georgia Line performs at Aaron’s Amphitheatre at Lakewood for the fifth time since May 2014, the band’s recent history indicates it will stick closely to the same set list it has been using throughout its tour through the U.S. and Canada that began in May. Florida Georgia Line usually opens with “This is How We Roll,” “It’z Just What We Do,” “Round Here,” “Anything Goes,” and “Dig Your Roots.” The band then mixes in “H.O.L.Y.” followed by a cover of the Bob Marley classic “Don’t Worry
About a Thing” before cranking out a few hits like “Sun Daze” and “Get Your Shine On” and ultimately closing with “Cruise.” Fans should also expect to hear “May We All,” a song on “Dig Your Roots” that features three-time Grammy winner Tim McGraw. “Tim’s a legend,” Kelley told Entertainment Weekly. “He’s been through a lot and continues to put out great music that’s fresh, he’s a great actor, and a great family man. The way he balances his life out and the way he treats people — he’s “humble and kind” — is something that we look up to him for.”
