Holiday Gift Guide
Smart ways to BUDGET for holiday gifting
• Look at spending from last year. The first step to establishing a budget is to review spending from last year. See how much you allotted to each person and how much you actually ended up spending on those people. Did you go over or under? Think about the other ways you spent money, including on decorations, entertaining, etc. Once you have a clear picture of how you spent your money last year, you can start building a budget for this year.

• Make lists of high-priority gifts.
If you spend a little more than intended on one gift, make the proper adjustments the next time you go out shopping. Otherwise, those few dollars here and there can really add up.
Select the gifts that have the most importance or those you want to buy the most, and budget with them in mind. Resist the temptation to buy extra items in an effort to make gifts look more impressive.

Holiday shopping can be expensive if shoppers let things get out of hand. However, by establishing a budget based on prior purchases, and keeping track of spending, it’s much easier to stay afloat this holiday season.

Holiday Gift Guide
Narrowing down holiday dinner options Holiday dinners are often more extravagant than the runof-the-mill dinners families eat on ordinary weeknights. Crafting a special dinner requires both planning and prep work, and there are some ways to make the experience go more smoothly.
What’s cooking?
Keep it simple Although you may want to impress your guests with your culinary prowess, experimenting with exotic dishes or trying intricate plating techniques can backfire if you do not have adequate practice. It’s better to stick to familiar foods and save the experimentation for a smaller dinner party.
Delegate some work Guests are often eager to contribute something to holiday meals. When planning a holiday dinner, think about which items you can ask others to bring. A noted early bird may bring ap-
petizers, like a crackers-andcheese platter. Those who tend to make late entrances may be tasked with providing decadent desserts. Unless the entire meal is potluck, holiday hosts usually handle the main courses and many of the side dishes.
Be prepared for leftovers
In an effort to ensure everyone has enough to eat, you likely will make more food than you and your guests need. Don’t let those leftovers go to waste. Stock up on takeaway storage containers so your guests can bring home some of the food. Holiday meals are full of many good foods and lots of conversation. Help make them a success by planning ahead.
453175-1
453214-1
Culture often dictates which meals are prepared. Many popular main courses involve pork and poultry, as baked hams and roasted turkeys are especially popular during the holiday season. But regardless of history, hosts should consider which foods appeal to the greatest number of guests, then plan the dinner around these items. Also, if you’re known for a
particular dish, go ahead and make that, even if it’s a less traditional holiday meal.

Tips for visiting a store Santa Families with young children often make visiting Santa Claus a part of their annual traditions. During the holiday season, Santa can be found taking up residence in department stores and malls across the country. Thousands of children and their parents will wait in line to get some face time with jolly old St. Nick. The following are a handful of ways to make kids’ visits with Santa even more pleasant.
• Do a test run. If your child has not taken a photo with Santa before, he or she may be frightened and the result will be a poor photograph. The beard and the red coat coupled with the
fact that kids are sitting on a stranger’s lap can be terrifying for youngsters. Acclimate your child to the experience by visiting the mall to see Santa and become familiar with what he looks like and how he acts. It may take a couple of visits before your child is ready to wait in line for the real visit.
• Go off-peak. Visit Santa when the store just opens or when lines are not as long, such as during school hours or dinner time. This should cut down on the wait and create a less tense experience. Confirm visiting hours so you don’t arrive only to find he’s out to lunch or feeding his reindeer. Do
not schedule anything after the Santa visit, so you don’t feel rushed.
• Dress comfortably. Wear comfortable shoes and clothing so neither you nor the kids will be uncomfortable. The goal is to look nice for the photo, but not at the expense of the children’s comfort level. And while you should be comfortable as well, be sure to look presentable, in the event you have to hop into the photo if that’s the only way your son or daughter will tolerate the experience.
• Pack some supplies. Bring snacks and drinks for the kids so hunger does
not make them antsy. Bring along a change of clothes in case someone spills food or spits up before your turn.
• Get Santa recommendations.
Ask friends and neighbors which Santas they visit. Many stores will have a Santa on hand, but not every Santa is as adept at handling children. You want someone who is used to making children feel welcome and comfortable.
Above all, try to have a good time and don’t expect perfection. Sometimes the best Santa-visit moments are the ones that are unrehearsed.

Tips for an economical, safe holiday season These Tips Brought to you by The holidays are an occasion for family, friends and joy. Unfortunately, those celebrations and decorations can have unpleasant results – high electric bills, shocks and fires. With a little thought and planning, you can celebrate, save money and stay safe at the same time. Go LED – LED light strands are becoming more popular. They’re sturdier, last longer and consume 70 percent less energy than conventional incandescent light strands. On top of the energy savings, LED lights are significantly less likely to burn out or break. Timing is everything – All holiday lights, LED or incandescent, should be placed on a timer. Simple timers cost less than $20 and can be set to turn on at sunset and off after a set number of hours. A good rule of thumb is to have lights on from sunset until bedtime. Avoid holiday vampires – Many holiday gifts can become energy vampires that use electricity 24 hours a day, even when they are supposedly turned off, and can account for 5-10 percent of your yearly consumption. Unplug electric devices and chargers when they are not being used or plug them into a smart power strip. Entertain for efficiency – Before your guests arrive, turn down the thermostat. It may be cold outside, but once your home begins to fill with people the temperature will begin to rise, and cooking will only add to your home’s warmth. Skip the preheat -- Most recipes begin with the words “preheat the oven to…” Large pieces of meat such as ham, turkey or a roast do not require a preheated oven. Preheating simply wastes energy. The exceptions to this rule are baked goods. Make the holidays safe – Too many holidays are marred by electrical shocks and house fires. Take just a few safety precautions to ensure your holidays are worry-free: • Make sure holiday lights are certified by an independent testing lab such as UL (Underwriters Laboratories) or ETL (Electrical Testing Laboratories). • Turn off all lights before leaving home or going to bed. • If you’re using an extension cord, be sure not to overload it. Don’t use more than three sets of lights per cord. Do not run cords under rugs or near appliances where they can overheat and cause a fire. If you have a live tree, keep extension cords away from where you water it. • Do not overload electrical outlets. • Make sure all outdoor lighting is plugged into Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) receptacles. • Be sure candles are out before going to bed or leaving the house. • Examine lights each year, discarding any that have frayed cords or broken light sockets. “When in doubt, throw them out.” • Before replacing a bulb, unplug the string of lights and make sure to use a replacement bulb of the same voltage and wattage as the original. • Never use electric lights on metallic trees. • Use only outdoor lights that are marked for outdoor use. Make sure the power is off when stringing outdoor lights, and attach them to the house with insulated hangers - not metal staples, nails, or tacks. Be sure to keep the light plugs above ground and out of water. • Examine trees you intend to string lights on and make sure no limbs have grown into or near power lines. This can lead to electrical shock. • Make sure ladders are safe and secure before climbing on them. 22 • THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 2016 • HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE • www.gwinnettdailypost.com
