WHAT’S IT LIKE A GEORGIA TO BE... SWARM Q&A

LACROSSE PLAYER with Mitch Belisle

interview by Noah Muszall Mitch Belisle, 31, is a professional lacrosse player for the Georgia Swarm of the National Lacrosse League (NLL), which plays its home games at Infinite Energy Arena in Duluth. Mitch is a defenseman and wears #85 for the Swarm. In 2017, Belisle is playing in his ninth season in the NLL and played at Cornell University in college.

What does it take to become a Professional Lacrosse player? To be a professional lacrosse player you have to love the sport, love to compete, and be willing to do all the work that it takes when no one is looking to become the best.

What challenges did you have to overcome to become a professional Lacrosse player for the Georgia Swarm? The biggest challenge was before the Swarm, I had to learn the indoor game. I am one of 12 American players in the NLL right now. I had to learn to play a game that the Canadian players have played their whole life. The other challenge was that I switched from offense to defense when I began college. I had to learn to play a whole new position in college. The last challenge is playing against the best lacrosse players in the world.

When, and why, did you first become interested in becoming a Professional Lacrosse player? I have always said that I wanted to play at the highest level that I could play. Once I finished college, professional lacrosse was the next highest level that I could play. I am excited to have the opportunity to play both indoor and outdoor professionally. Since then I have continued to love it.

What do you do every day? What’s a typical day on the job? Typically, we will wake up and have breakfast together. We will have our team shootaround from 10-11am and then we’ll have a team lunch. After lunch, I will go back to the hotel until we return to the arena. I will either go for a little walk or take a nap. After two hours I will head

4 • KIDSVILLE NEWS • March 2017 • www.kidsvillenews.com/gwinnett

back to the arena for the game. After the game, we all hangout as a team.

What is your favorite hobby or thing to do when you are not working?

Your job sounds really fun. What’s the hardest part of your job? The hardest part is that we all have other jobs outside of lacrosse. It is the balance of staying in shape and playing the best players while having a full-time job and spending time with my family. Time management is the toughest part of the job.

My favorite hobby is hanging out with my son, George, who was born about two months ago. Whatever he wants to do is what I want to do.

What’s the best part of your job? Being on a team that is a group of guys who are not only great lacrosse players, but also great people. It is rare to be on a team where you can say that each player cares about each other more than just being a teammate. It speaks volumes about the owners and management who have built this team to what we have this year.

Make sure that you do everything that you can to follow your passion. If you work hard enough at something and care enough about it then you will find a way to become what you want to be. It doesn’t matter if it is a professional lacrosse player, mathematician, or a professor.

Would you do any other job if you could? I would be a back-up punter in the NFL.

What advice would you like to give kids (boys or girls) who are interested in becoming a professional lacrosse player?

Discover the Science Behind the Storms

Dance is an important part of Polish culture. Different regions have been practicing specific dances for centuries. Each region has a dance that symbolizes different important parts of life. Each dance has a completely different style, and the dancers wear very special traditional costumes. One of the most famous Polish folk dances is called Krakowiak. • • • • • • • • •

• • • •

It comes from the region of Krakow. Krakow was the first capital of Poland. The dance started in the 16th century. At first, the dance was only performed by men, but now it is danced by men and women. Many consider it the national dance of Poland. The dance is performed in groups of several couples. In the 19th century, the dance became a ballroom dance. The dancers wear bright costumes. The women wear white shirts, colorful vests and flowery skirts. All of the clothing is heavily embroidered and covered in sequins, flowers, lace and ribbons. The men wear dark coats and white shirts. Their vests and pants are also decorated with embroidery, metal and brightly colored strings. The tempo is very fast. The dancers turn, jump, run and stamp throughout the dance. It is often performed in circles or lines.

Poland is famous for many different styles of folk dances. Each one is unique. For example, Kujawiak, from the northwest of Poland, is called the “sleeping” dance. Compared to other styles of dance this one is very calm and relaxed. All of these different styles of dance that are specific to different regions show that even in one country, the Polish people and cultures can be unique and different. Each style represents an important piece of life for the people who perform it. Each one is special and important even though they are all still Polish.

Maintaining a home that is welcoming and kid-friendly can be challenging. Kids are full of energy and oftentimes put fun ahead of tidiness. But no matter how energetic their youngsters are, parents can still employ several strategies to ensure their homes are both sophisticated and childfriendly.

Consider an open floor plan. Rooms that

flow into one another make it easier to keep tabs on children. Such rooms also allow residents and guests to mingle in separate rooms but not be too far away from one another.

Choose washable fabrics.

Upholstery will need to stand up to the abuse kids can dish out. Sofas and chairs with slipcovers can be advantageous because many slipcovers can be easily removed and laundered. Patterned fabrics will hide some stains, while treated fabrics may resist liquid spills for easier cleanup.

Create a catch-all spot. Special bins or other organizational tools in the entryway can help to cull clutter when children come in the house from school or play. Be sure the keep cubbies, containers and coat hooks at a child-friendly height. Look for high-traffic rugs. Rugs designed for high-traffic areas will be more forgiving when children march across them several times per day. There are no rules that say you can’t bring an outdoor rug inside, and these rugs tend to be easier to clean.

Think outside pink and blue.

For children’s rooms, make sure they’re colorful, but consider other hues to give the rooms some personality. Focus on a hobby or activity and borrow the color scheme from the accessories used for decorating.

Hang whimsical artwork.

Employ framing and lighting to make kids’ artwork look like professional pieces. Routinely change the pictures when a new look is desired.

Designate a place for play.

Devote an entire room or a nook in a house for imaginative play. Store toys here so these items will not create clutter in individual bedrooms.

RINGO Come Out and Play

Ringo is a fun game that comes from Poland. It is a relatively young game; it is only 50 years old. It was invented by Wlodzimierz Stryzewski. He is also famous for being a fencer and a journalist. Originally, the game was part of training for fencing, but the creator realized that these training exercises could also be used just as a fun competition between friends. The game is similar to volleyball. In 1989, the Polish Ringo Association was founded, and in 1993, the International Ringo Foundation was created. The game is now played all over the world; there are even European and World Championships.

court is perfect, but a tennis court could also work. There should be a team on both sides of the net. A team could be made of one to three players. Teams should have an even number of players. The only other important equipment is one or two hollow rubber rings, this is called the Ringo. A Frisbee can be a good substitute. The first team to score 15 points wins. Teams throw the Ringo over the net. The Ringo can’t touch the ground, go out of bounds, touch the net or touch any part of the body other than the hand. It can only be caught with one hand. A team scores a point if the other side doesn’t catch the Ringo correctly. A team loses points if the Ringo isn’t thrown properly. The Ringo can’t be held for more than five seconds and must be thrown with the same hand that caught it. Once a player catches the Ringo, they can’t move until they throw it. The thrower must also keep one foot on the ground always.

Pledge to make recycling your New Year’s resolution Did you make a New Year’s resolution? You might have decided to eat more vegetables, play fewer video games, or read more books this year. Why not make a resolution to incorporate recycling in your everyday life? There are so many benefits to recycling, so why not commit to protecting our environment? Be sure to encourage your friends, family and even teachers to recycle as well! Here are some great reasons why recycling should be your top resolution of 2017: 1. Recycling is good for the environment: Recycling requires far less energy, uses fewer natural resources, and keeps waste from piling up in landfills. 2. Recycling provides health benefits: Garbage, litter, and other trash is not just harmful to the environment, but it

can even stimulate disease. By encouraging and practicing recycling in our communities, we can reduce waste and create a place to live that’s not only cleaner but healthier too. 3. Recycling saves energy: Did you know that recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to listen to a full album on your phone or portable music device? Recycling 100 cans could light your bedroom for two whole weeks! 4. Recycling preserves landfill space: The average American throws away seven pounds of garbage every day, most of which goes into a landfill where it’s compacted and buried. No one wants to live next door to a

stinky landfill, but if we don’t recycle, we’ll have to make more landfills to get rid of the trash we produce. 5. Recycling is easy to do: It’s as simple as placing your recyclables in a recycling bin. Recycled materials are used to make paper, toys, clothes and even playground equipment! 6. Recycling creates jobs: Recycling in the U.S. is a $236 billion a year industry. More than 56,000 recycling and reuse businesses employ 1.1 million workers nationwide. So do your part in 2017 and pledge to recycle!

Our solar system is a busy place. We have the sun, eight planets, at least five dwarf planets, and more than 170 moons. But we also have millions of comets and asteroids. One of these asteroids is named Bennu. Bennu is large, and it orbits the sun near the Earth’s orbit. This asteroid is also very old. Scientists want to study Bennu to learn about the early solar system. NASA scientists will study Bennu with a spacecraft named OSIRISREx. OSIRIS-REx stands for Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security, Regolith Explorer. That long name means the mission will do several important things. For example, OSIRIS-REx will perform experiments to see what Bennu is made of. This is cool because the materials in an asteroid could one day be useful resources here on Earth! OSIRIS-REx will also explore the asteroid’s surface and learn about the size and shape of Bennu. This and other information will help scientists understand what might happen if an asteroid collides with Earth. All of this exciting work will take a long time — almost seven years — to complete. OSIRIS-REx launched on September 8, 2016. However, Bennu is really far away. OSIRIS-REx won’t arrive there until 2018. When it finally arrives, OSIRIS-REx will begin mapping the asteroid’s surface. It will take a whopping 505 days for OSIRISREx to complete this map! Later, in July 2020, OSIRIS-REx will fly very close to Bennu. It will use a robotic arm to collect some rocks and dust from the asteroid’s surface. OSIRIS-REx will send that sample back to Earth. But since Bennu is so far away, the sample won’t arrive on Earth until sometime in 2023. In its long seven-year journey, OSIRIS-REx will be trying to answer one main question: Where did we come from? On Bennu, maybe we’ll find the building blocks for life and learn more about the chemistry that started life on Earth. No matter what we discover on Bennu, we are sure to learn more about the history of our vast and busy solar system! Irish Stew for St. Patrick‘s Day Though March may mark the official arrival of spring, the warm weather synonymous with spring typically does not arrive until April or May. St. Patrick’s Day celebrants who spend the day outdoors celebrating their Irish heritage would do well to warm up with a hearty meal once the revelry ends. Irish stew is tailor-made for such feasts, as it aligns with the theme of the day and also serves as a warm and filling meal. Slow cookers make whipping up a batch of Irish stew somewhat effortless. Simply combine the ingredients in the morning, and return at night to a completely cooked meal you can enjoy with family and friends. Any favorite stew recipe can be adapted to the slow cooker. For inspiration, try this variation.

Slow Cooker Irish Stew (Serves 4-6) 2 6 3-4 2 2 1 1 2 1 1/4 1

pounds boneless leg of lamb, trimmed and cut into 1-inch pieces (you also can use chuck beef roast if you prefer it to lamb) large potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks parsnips, peeled and cut into chunks large carrots peeled and cut into chunks, or half a bag of prepared baby carrots celery stalks, chopped large yellow onion, coarsely chopped can beef broth tablespoons tomato paste pint Irish stout beer cup vegetable oil tablespoon flour Chopped fresh herbs, such as parsley and thyme Salt and pepper to taste

In a mixing bowl, coat meat with the flour. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet and cook the onion until translucent. Add the meat and brown. Place the potatoes, parsnips, carrots, and celery in the bottom of a slow cooker crock. Add the cooked meat and onions. Pour in the beef broth and beer. Add the tomato paste, fresh herbs and salt and pepper. Cover and cook on high for 4 hours or low for 8 hours. When ready to serve, sprinkle with fresh parsley and offer with crusty bread and salad.
