Hi, Officer Norville. There is a kid in my class who picks on me. What’s the best way to handle a bully?
the D
ragon
Dear Truman, I am sorry someone is treating you like that. The first thing to know is the bully is the problem, not you! Make sure you tell a trusted adult what the bully is saying or doing. Let the adult deal with him or her. While you are waiting for the bully to learn that what he or she is doing is wrong, you can practice showing the bully how to act better by setting an example for him or her. Maybe he/she doesn’t see enough people being nice to each other. You can do little things like holding doors for someone carrying things, offering to help others, giving compliments – just being a good citizen. Just remember, bullying behavior is wrong. Their opinions are not the ones that matter, so don’t let them get you down. Kidsville OCT 17.pdf

By Linda Hermans-Killiam Have you ever seen a cloud that looks sort of like a rabbit? Or maybe a rock formation that looks a bit like an elephant? Although you know that a cloud isn’t really a giant rabbit in the sky, it’s still fun to look for patterns in images from nature. Can you spot some familiar spooky sites in the space images below? To learn some fun planet facts and make a planet mask, check out NASA Space Place!: spaceplace.nasa.gov/planet-masks
This might look like the grinning face of a jack-o’-lantern, but it’s actually a picture of our sun! In this image, taken by NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory, the glowing eyes, nose and mouth are some of the sun’s active regions. These regions give off lots of light and energy, which causes them to appear brighter against the rest of the sun. Active regions are constantly changing locations on the sun. On the day this image was captured, they just happened to look like a face! Credit: NASA/GSFC/SDO
This is a Hubble Space Telescope image of Jupiter. Do you notice something that looks like a big eye peeking back at you? That’s the shadow of Jupiter’s moon Ganymede as it passed in front of the planet’s Great Red Spot. Jupiter’s Great Red Spot is a gigantic, oval-shaped storm that is larger than Earth and is shrinking. It has been on Jupiter for several hundred years, and its winds can swirl up to 400 miles per hour! Credit: NASA/ESA/A. Simon (Goddard Space Flight Center)
Can you see the profile of a witch in this image? This image from NASA’s Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer shows the Witch Head nebula. The nebula is made up of clouds of dust heated by starlight. These dust clouds are where new stars are born. Here, the dust clouds happen to be in the shape of an open mouth, long nose and pointy chin. Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech
The Black Widow Nebula looks like a giant spider in space. It is a huge cloud of gas and dust containing massive young stars. Radiation and winds from these stars push the dust and gas around, creating a spider-like shape. This image is from NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope. Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech/ Univ. of Wisc.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, e-waste refers to electronic products that have finished their useful life. Televisions, computers, tablets, audio and stereo equipment, cameras and mobile phones all qualify as e-waste when their usefulness has expired. Many people are unaware of how to safely dispose of such items, and simply throwing them into the trash can be harmful to the environment and even illegal. Electronics can typically be donated or recycled, but men and women donating old computers or mobile phones should have any personal or potentially sensitive information scrubbed from such devices before donating or recycling them.

Data from a small study conducted by researchers at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University reported that adolescents who had animal experience were more likely to see themselves as important contributors to communities and more likely to take on leadership roles. Pets can also help children develop into well-rounded individuals. Playing with a pet requires children to engage in physical activity and can help stimulate motor skills. An English study conducted in 2010 and published in the “American Journal of Public Health” found that children from dog-owning families spent more time in light or moderate to vigorous physical activity and recorded higher levels of activity counts per minute than kids whose families did not own a dog. Pets may help with allergies and respiratory ailments as well. A 2012 study by the American Academy of Pediatrics discovered that children who have early contact with cats and dogs have fewer respiratory infections and ear infections and need shorter courses of antibiotics than children who have not had contact with pets. A study from Dennis Ownby, M.D., a pediatrician and head of the allergy and immunology department of the Medical College of Georgia, found that having multiple pets decreases a child’s risk of developing certain allergies. He found that the children who were exposed to two or more dogs or cats as babies were less than half as likely to develop common allergies as kids who had no pets in the home. Pets also may foster social interactions, which can benefit children who are shy. Inviting others over to meet pets can help children make friends and find others with similar interests. Children may also confide in pets, which can help develop their self esteem.

f youngsters have been eyeing fuzzy kittens or boisterous puppies at nearby shelters or pet stores, parents may want to give in to those cries for a family pet. Pets are added responsibilities, but the health benefits associated with pet ownership may be well worth the investment of time and effort. Caring for a pet is sometimes viewed as a childhood rite of passage, but there’s much more to the experience than just learning responsibility. Experts say a child’s emotional, cognitive, physical and social development can be enhanced through interaction with a family pet. Studies continue, but the effects of family pets on children was heavily researched by developmental psychologist Gail F. Melson in 2003. Melson looked at literature on childanimal relationships and found that children who had pets were better able to understand biology and children who could turn to pets for unconditional emotional support were less anxious and withdrawn than their peers without family pets.

Located in northern Europe, Norway is surrounded by the North Sea to its south, the Norwegian Sea to its west and north and Finland, Sweden and Russia to its east. Although Norway lies on the outskirts of Europe, it is not a member of The European Union. It is a leader in waste management with what is claimed to be the most efficient recycling plant on the planet, located in Skedsmokorset near the city of Oslo. Norway is a country with a rich history that includes Vikings, adventurers, tradesmen, artists and kings. The Vikings were fierce
warriors, which enabled them to conquer many lands. They were also clever businessmen, skilled sailors, talented metalsmiths, woodworkers and amazing storytellers. Because of their sailing skills and sturdy ships, they traveled to and explored places like Iceland, Greenland, Newfoundland and even North America. Vikings are credited with founding Dublin, Ireland, and Normandy, France. Many credit Vikings with inventing the comb – they made them out of antlers. They are also thought to be the first to use the magnetic compass.

Here are some interesting facts about Norway: • It is more than twice the size of Georgia, just slightly larger than New Mexico. • Oslo is the capital of Norway. • The landscape is a combination of rugged mountains, fertile valleys and plains with a coastline with many fjords. The north is arctic tundra. • 27 percent of the land is forest. • Most people live in the south where it is warmer. • Norway has one active volcano: Beerenberg on Jan Mayen Island in the Norwegian Sea.
• There are approximately 5,320,000 people living in Norway. • People from Norway are called Norwegians. • Norway has two official languages: Bokmal Norwegian and Nynorsk Norwegian. Sami and Finnish are also common languages in Norway. • Norway has many natural resources, including oil and gas, hydropower, fish, forests and minerals. • Norway is the second-largest seafood exporter in the world. China is the largest.

Q&A
WHAT IT’S LIKE TO BE... A PERFORMER FOR DISNEY ON ICE
Hannah Dolan Davies
520171-1
What does it take to become a Performer for Disney On Ice? To become a Disney On Ice skater all you need is hard work, persistence and a dream! Most of us on the cast have been skating for most of our lives but it is never too late to start. When, and why, did you first become interested in becoming a performer for Disney On Ice? I started skating at the age of 7 but it was only in my teens that I realised that I had the potential to take my skating to a professional level. I unfortunately sustained an injury shortly after that which of course motivated me more to want to do it. Once I got past the injury a few years later I worked really hard to be in good enough shape to try my luck at auditioning. It was at the audition that I truly realised how badly I wanted to be a part of this company; I got to watch a show before hand and seeing the costumes, the makeup and the people made me see it was truly an amazing opportunity that I had to grab with both hands!

to do the same! There is no better feeling. When my skating days are over I would love to take on coaching as to give this opportunity to other people. What is your favorite hobby or thing to do when you are not working? Being a performer can be hard work so for me it is important to find things to do to relax when we're not working. I love to read crime and mystery books. I also love to go to nice restaurants and try the local food in the area that we are in that week. What advice would you like to give kids who are interested in becoming a skater for Disney On Ice? The advice I would give to young people hoping to become a part of Disney On Ice is that the key to success is hard work. Every cast member I know has one thing in common and that is we all worked incredibly hard to be successful. It can be hard sometimes; I remember when I was growing up missing out on concerts or friends meeting up because I would be at the ice rink. Honestly that's just what the sport requires; know that these sacrifices are worth it in the end. I have been lucky enough to see the world over the 5 years I've been a part of Disney On Ice whilst meeting some of my best friends and even my Fiance! So looking back it was hard but what an incredible journey I've been on since.

warmed home heavy with snow and the smell of spiced clementine. Most begin making preparations in early December, not unlike many families you probably know. On Dec. 24, a family dinner is served, typically featuring either pork or lamb ribs. This probably sounds familiar to you, but does your family celebrate Santa Lucia Day Dec. 13? Today, this celebration is one of light, as “Lucia” is derived from its Latin origins, and it’s quite a big deal for school children all over the Nordic country. As it’s now a sort of festival of lights, it may be hard to imagine that it used to represent the darkest day of the calendar year when those who celebrated Christmas would mark their door with crosses to ward off the trail of unsettled dead souls (the Asgard parade).

hen we think about exploring other cities or countries, we often compare our lives to the lives of people who live in these other places. Are they similar or different to us in values, entertainment or tastes? Close your eyes and think about December. What do you see in your mind’s eye? Maybe you see a lighting of the Shabbat candles, a manger or a bendera. The symbols that come to mind are likely connected to holiday traditions your family shares. The culture in Norway is to take holiday traditions seriously because they have been beloved for so long. Their traditions revolve around a holiday called Jul, which is Norway’s name for Christmas. To imagine a Norwegian Jul, think of a fireplace-

This film explores all the aspects of one day on Earth. It follows the lives of different animals, including iguanas, baby lizards, zebras, giraffes, lions and many more. The film shows all the struggles in nature, but also the wonderful and amazing parts. It makes you see the beauty of nature and makes you curious about what’s out there. The people responsible for
filming this, Robin Cox, Kevin Flay and Flying Glass, used their cameras to capture the beauty of Earth. Doing this was a challenge, but they managed to capture so much detail and were able to get incredible close-ups. They recorded at different angles, which makes the whole film visually pleasing and close to what it’s like if you were actually there. I also loved the narration of Jackie Chan and Robert Redford. Their voices are very mellow, blend in with the music and overall just fit perfectly for this film. I especially like how the camera work shoots at different angles, so you get a different perspective on the world. The film’s visuals are colorful and intriguing.

My favorite part is when the giraffes fight over the land and the ladies. I like this scene because I learned something new. I had no idea that giraffes could bend their necks so much or that they would just swing their heads around to fight. It was really amusing to see their heads swinging around everywhere, but a little sad to see that they were bleeding. The message of this film is to acknowledge the earth and realize how lucky we are to be here. There are so many wonderful things happening around us that we don’t notice. I loved watching this film so much. It really touched my heart and made me realize how beautiful the earth is, on just one amazing day. I give this film 5 out of 5 stars and recommend it for ages 3 to 18.
