Aerobic exercise elevates HDL (good) cholesterol to remove fat from blood vessels and improve cerebral blood flow; further it improves the utilization, uptake, and function of glucose — the brain’s main energy source. This allows the brain to function more efficiently, without accumulating the toxins and free radicals associated with excess unused glucose. In a nutshell, exercise tones your brain and your body.”

The No. 1 way to improve health is to drop bad habits, like smoking, and form healthy ones, like exercise. Exercise is a ‘cornerstone’ habit because it often leads to the adoption of other healthy habits. Moderate exercise three or four times a week for about a half hour each interval is a start.”

While there are a number of tips on managing weight, here are a few to focus on: Slow down while you eat, be prepared by planning meals, carry snacks in case meals are delayed, discover activities to enjoy other than food and finally, don’t feel guilty if you fall off the wagon.” — Renee Covey, registered dietitian with Gwinnett Medical Center’s Center for Surgical Weight Management

In order to improve heart health, it is important to manage traditional risk factors by maintaining a lowfat diet, exercising regularly, refraining from smoking, and controlling diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol. However, I also challenge people to reduce stress and achieve peace of mind; the impact can be profound. Stress may produce physical or psychological damage over time. Furthermore, making this one change helps modify all of the above risk factors in a positive way, thus improving cardiovascular health.”

Keep positive energy flowing in the new year By Deanna Allen
deanna.allen@gwinnettdailypost.com
The health connections between the body, mind and spirit are interwoven and quite fascinating, Destiny Kelley said. The Peachtree Corners resident, who holds a bachelor of science, is a certified health coach, a certified worksite wellness specialist, a member of the American Association of Drugless Practitioners and a certified Reiki practitioner. “In order keep yourself
healthy you must take care of your mind, body and spirit,” Kelley said. “We all have energy running through our bodies and when that energy becomes stuck, stale or stagnant it can cause physical ailments. For example when you are under a lot of stress one of the first physical signs are usually gastrointestinal issues. The digestive track is very vulnerable to stress.” Kelley said children — and adults — often show signs of stress with a “tummy ache” and that there are advantages to treating the
whole person, not just the ailment or disease. For the new year — and the new you — Kelley offers five ways to keep positive energy flowing through the body. 1. Feed the body and the soul. While eating fresh fruits, vegetables and avoiding processed food is one way to detox your body, detoxing your spiritual life can be just as easy, Kelley said. Take a break from your electronics and put away the phone and the tablet. Avoid watching violent movies or

playing violent video games and spend time reading a spiritual book, praying or meditating. “Just 10 to 30 minutes a day can do wonders,” she said. 2. Breathe. “Just breathe,” Kelley said, “but with the intention of clearing out the negative energy and replacing it with positive energy.” She suggests sitting in a comfortable position in a quiet room. “Close your eyes, but your hand on your abdomen and breathe in and out slowly,” she said. “As you breathe in expand your belly out against your hand and as you exhale relax. Imagine a strong white light emanating from the sky into the top of your head and running down your spine. The light shines with glowing energy washing away the bad day, the hurtful things others have said and will refresh you.” Kelley suggests spending 10 minutes each day breathing in the good and releasing the bad. 3. Get outside. Physical activity causes a physical and chemical reaction in the brain, releasing endorphins, or “feel good” chemicals, Kelley said. But there’s more you can do than just exercise. “Sure you can walk on a treadmill in the gym,” Kelley said, “but when is the last time you walked in a park without your ear phones?” Kelley suggests leaving the music at home and taking a walk outside or a hike in the woods. Ask yourself what you see, hear and smell. “Take note of the wonders around you and appreciate your neighborhood, a local park or a hike in the woods,” Kelley said. 4. Volunteer your time.

“Nothing can make us appreciate our circumstances more than helping others,” Kelley said. “Although the holidays have passed organizations need help year round.” Kelley suggests volunteering at a soup kitchen or cooking a meal for an elderly neighbor. Take your children to the local animal shelter and help walk the dogs. Or organize a neighborhood “Care Team.” “When you hear about a neighbor who is having a hard time, have a group of people who can reach out to them,” Kelley said. “One family can cook a meal, another can get their mail while their out of town, and have someone bring them flowers or mow their lawn. “It’s the little things we can do that can make a difference in someone’s life,” she added.
5. When you are feeling spiritually and emotionally drained, reach out. Kelley suggests calling a spiritual leader or someone from your religious community or reaching out to someone who specializes in clearing negative energy. “Reiki practitioners work with the body’s energy,” Kelley said. Reiki is an Eastern technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by a certified Reiki practitioner and is based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy” flows through each us and is what causes us to be alive. The idea is that if one’s “life force energy” is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.

Make SMART healthy changes in 2014 By Deanna Allen
deanna.allen@gwinnettdailypost.com
When making changes in the new year, Ann Wilder said there are a few factors to consider. Wilder, who is the director of Eastside Medical Center’s Heritage Behavioral Health Services, said before making a change one should ask: Am I mak-
ing this change for me or am I making this change for another Ann Wilder reason? “Unless I can incorporate some personal value, the change won’t stick anyway,” she said. “The goal has to be
for us.” If making the change for oneself, Wilder said, one should then take the SMART approach — the goal must be specific, measurable, achievable, responsible and based on a timeline. “It really isn’t complicated,” Wilder said. “Whatever the goal is — a new year, a new us — we need
to know (that) I need to think a new way and I need to change some behaviors. It’s really like laying out our own strategic plan.” Wilder said if one can’t accomplish a goal, there’s typically an underlying reason. “What I would always encourage people to do is let’s figure out what that underlying reason is.
There’s really no reason we can’t accomplish what we want in life. Any kind of a barrier or fear, most of that can be dispelled with new ideas and new information. We need to spend enough time to get new information. That’s a component that I think we forget to include in our new year, new you plan is if I don’t get new information, I’m
just going to keep doing things the same way over and over and over.” Wilder also encourages being proud of what is accomplished, even if it’s not the specific goal that was set. “One success is a stepping stone to the next success,” Wilder said, “and then that success is a stepping stone to the next one.”
pledged to remove 1 trillion calories from the U.S. marketplace by 2012 and 1.5 trillion by 2015, compared with a 2007 baseline. In fact, as of 2012 they sold 6.4 trillion fewer calories, found an analysis by researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC). The companies say they accomplished this through changes ranging from reducing the sugar in chocolatemilk powder to introducing more ice-cream products
with built-in portion control. “Reports like this, and the fact that they exceeded their commitment by four-fold, really shows that you can make progress in giving American families more healthy options,” said Larry Soler, president of the Partnership for a Healthier America, a non-profit chaired by first lady Michelle Obama. The group was formed in 2010 to work with the private sector on anti-obesity strategies. At the time the Partnership
was launched, critics said it relied too heavily on industry good will and called instead for stricter regulation on food production and marketing. Even with the companies’ success so far in reducing the calories they sell, some experts still warn that voluntary efforts by industry “are not a magic bullet,” said Jeff Levi, executive director of Trust for America’s Health, a nonprofit policy group. “Particularly with kids, there is a role for regulation” in reducing
demand for unhealthy, highcalorie fare. It is not clear yet how the companies accomplished the dramatic reduction, said UNC public health researcher Barry Popkin, who led the analysis funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the nation’s largest public health philanthropy. Some of the decline may have come from the recession, as financially-strapped families cut back on junk food. When the pledge was announced, companies said they would substitute lowercalorie products, re-engineer existing products to cut their calories, and reduce portion size, such as with the popular 100-calorie packs of cookies and other snacks. Popkin and his team have found that beverage companies are producing more drinks that have both sugar and artificial sweeteners and, therefore, fewer calories than sugar-only drinks. They are also “shifting advertising to lower-calorie beverages,” he said, as Coca-Cola and PepsiCo both did. The biggest reduction in calories sold was to households with young children. “It seems to be parents who are driving the calorie reductions,” Popkin said. Several participating companies made lower-calorie versions of their popular foods. Last winter, General Mills introduced 80-calorie Fiber One chocolate cereal (other cereals in the Fiber One line have 170 to 220 calories, though the “serving” size is also larger). It has rolled out a 90-calorie Fiber One brownie, 100-calorie Yoplait Greek yogurt
(versus 140 in the original) and 90-calorie Yoplait light (versus 170). The introductions have been hits with consumers. The brownies “generated more than $100 million in retail sales in their first year,” said General Mills spokeswoman Kris Patton, while Yoplait Greek 100 “reached $150 million, making it the single largest new-product launch for Yoplait in 20 years.” Nestle USA has reduced the sugar content of its Nesquik chocolate powder more than 25 percent since 2000 and intends to cut it another 15 to 20 percent this year. Its Stouffer’s brand of meals has less fat, and it now counts more than 30 ice cream products from its Dreyer’s, Haagen-Dazs and other lines which come in single-serve cups or bars or are otherwise portion-controlled: when people dig ice cream out of a 48-ounce tub or even a pint, they consume an average of at least two servings. Coca-Cola is “offering low- and no-calorie options for nearly all of our brands,” said Sandy Douglas, president of Coca-Cola North America, and those drinks “now represent nearly onethird of our beverage volume in North America.” Smaller sizes such as 7.5-ounce “mini cans” of Coke, Sprite and other sodas have helped consumers imbibe. However, the reduction in calories sold may not yet move the needle for the more than two-thirds of Americans who are overweight or obese. The 6.4 trillion fewer calories works out to 78 fewer calories per person per day.
Food companies surpass goal to reduce calories Reuters NEW YORK — The world’s largest food and beverage companies have far exceeded a five-year goal set in 2010 to fight obesity by removing trillions of calories from products sold in the United States, according to an independent evaluation released on Thursday. In May 2010, 16 of the biggest food and beverage companies, from Coca-Cola Co to Kraft Foods Group,

8 p.m. on FOX American Idol Wild about Harry? You’re in luck this season. As always, the season begins with highlights and lowlights from the audition rounds. 11:01 p.m. on A&E Crazy Hearts: Nashville Life and love in the country music industry are the focus of this new reality series set in the land of the Grand Ole Opry. The cast of characters includes the newly uncoupled Lee Holyfield; her ex, rocker Leroy Powell; singer Hannah Fairlight, Leroy’s new love; bartender and aspiring singer Jimmy Stanley; his new girlfriend, April Nemeth, who’s also started managing his career; and Anthony Billups, owner of an upand-coming music venue.
8:31 p.m. on CBS The Millers What’s the best age to have that birds-and-the-bees talk with your child? Nevertheless, when Carol (Margo Martindale) discovers that Tom (Beau Bridges) never had The Talk with Nathan (Will Arnett), she insists on correcting that oversight. Embarrassment ensues. Jayma Mays also stars in “The Talk.”
8 p.m. on LIFE Movie: Flowers in the Attic Heather Graham and Ellen Burstyn lead the cast of this new screen treatment of V.C. Andrews’ controversial chiller. Have you read any good books lately? Going over my book list for the past year always provides a bit of entertainment, especially when I see titles I don’t even remember. But then I revisit the books I really loved like “The Art of Racing in the Rain” by Garth Stein. It wasn’t one I would have chosen on my own, but was a selection for my book club. It was well worth reading and discussing, as was “Cutting for Stone” by Abraham Verghese, another great read for which I thank my book club. Last year I had the pleasure of not only reading “When the Heart
by William Powers tops my non-fiction list for 2013. While the term “social media” seems to be a modern day concept, Powers cites seven phases of social media through history, all the way back to Plato, who over 2000 years ago Susan questioned the effects Larson of this newfangled “text messaging” as people Cries,” a novel about the transitioned from the oral Amish community, but to the written word. also the honor of meeting I read a few first the author, Cindy Woods- novels by local authors mall, when I moderated a including “Written on a panel discussion sponRock” by Martha Philsored by the Gwinnett lips, who cleverly wove library at the Norcross in the history of the Cultural Center. Georgia Guidestones in “Hamlet’s Blackberry” Elberton with an ac-
tual murder committed four decades ago and “Hardscrabble Road,” by George Weinstein, who presents a delightful coming of age story set during the Great Depression. To balance the new writings, I took advantage of the Gutenberg Project, an online collection of classic books, including many that are out of print. I revisited several books from my grade school days. “Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch” written in 1901 by Alice Hegen Rice, was much more depressing than I’d remembered while “The Peterkin Papers” written in 1886 by
Lucretia P. Hale seemed even sillier. In rereading “Out on a Limb” a memoir by Louise Baker, who’d lost her right leg at age eight, I had a better appreciation for her wry sense of humor than I did as a child. I think it’s always a richer experience to read books along with someone else, which is why I really appreciate everything my husband and I read together last year. Sorry to say, I did not join him as he plowed through “Anna Karenina,” “War and Peace,” Farewell to Arms” and “Omoo,” although I enjoyed his telling me about them.
But we enjoyed discussing “Unvanquished” by William Faulkner, “In the Garden of the Beast” by Erik Larson (sorry to say no relation) and “Unbroken,” the story of WWII prisoner Louis Zamperini written by Laura Hillenbrand. I look forward to seeing what books come off the press in 2014 but am even more interested in any recommendations you, my fellow readers, might post in the comment section. Those are always the best. Don’t expect Falcons to win a Super Bowl anytime soon As someone who rooted for the Atlanta Falcons through many, many years of mediocrity — entire decades when the hapless franchise couldn’t put together backto-back winning seasons — I’ve been gratified to see the Birds achieve some degree of relevance over the past six seasons. Even 2013’s dismal effort has left me mostly unfazed. I fully expect the team, under its current leadership, to be back in the mix next year, with a winning record and perhaps a playoff berth. I just don’t expect them to win a Super Bowl. Not next year. Not the year after that, or the year after that, or any time in the foreseeable future. They simply don’t have the coach or the quarterback. I don’t have anything against Mike Smith or Matt Ryan. I like them both, and I appreciate the stability and credibility they’ve brought to a franchise that has been the butt of jokes for much of my lifetime. I’ve just observed that, to win a Super Bowl, a team has to have either an elite coach or an elite quarterback, and preferably both. Atlanta has neither.
We know he has at least four guys ahead of him, the “Big Four” of Manning, Brady, Brees, and Rodgers. So let’s expand our definition of “elite” to include the top eight QB’s — a full fourth of the league’s starting signal callers. Does he make the cut?
