OLD-SCHOOL ACTS New Kids On The Block will perform at the Infinite Energy Arena on July 14, with Paula Abdul and Boyz II Men also on the bill. (Special Photo)
Infinite Energy Arena to host legendary musicians this summer
By Jon Gallo
Staff Correspondent
Ronald Regan was in the White House, “Die Hard” and “Rain Man” ruled the box office, “The Cosby Show” and “L.A. Law” were mustsee TV and less than 325,000 residents called Gwinnett County home. So much has changed since 1988, except when it comes to summer concerts, as five acts who were touring nearly three decades ago — Darryl Hall & John Oates, James Taylor and Bonnie Raitt, New Kids on the Block, Paula Abdul and Roger Waters — will all stop at Infinite Energy Arena, which wasn’t even around then. But within a little more than a month span, Hall & Oates (June 11), James Taylor with Bonnie Raitt (July 11), New Kids on the Block with Paula Abdul and Boyz II Men (July 14) and Roger Waters (July 16) will all rock Gwinnett County, belting out the hits they rode to fame in the 1980s. Hall & Oates — the No. 1 selling duo in music history — are headlining a show with international multiplatinum selling band Tears for Fears on a 29-city North American tour. Allen Stone will open the show. “Performing with Tears For Fears will be an exciting and musical experience for me and all the fans,” Oates, who sings and plays the guitar and bass, said. Hall, who sings and plays the guitar and keyboard, and Oates recorded their first record together in 1972 and haven’t stopped playing since — cranking out 18 studio records that included six hits that landed atop the Billboard Hot 100: “Rich Girl,” “Kiss on My List,” “Private Eyes,” “I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do),” “Maneater” and “Out of Touch.” Their ability to seamlessly blend soul, rock and pop enabled them to become arguably the greatest duo in music history. Though Hall, 70, and Oates, 68, are not as popular now as they were during the height of their careers when they cranked out 29 Top 40 hits from 1976 to 1990, they remain legends. James Taylor, 69, and Bonnie Raitt, 67, who both have been inducted into the Rock ’n’ Roll Hall of Fame, have also endured time. Taylor has combined his baritone voice and distinctive guitar playing for more than four decades. He has sold more than 100 million albums, earning gold, platinum and multiplatinum awards for classics such as “Sweet Baby James” in 1970 to “October Road” in 2002. In 2015, Taylor released “Before This World,” his first new studio album in 13 years, which earned him his first No. 1 album. In 2012, Taylor was awarded the distinguished Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French government and the National Medal of Arts by then-President Barack Obama in a White House ceremony. In 2015, Taylor was presented with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor before receiving the Kennedy Center Honors, which are presented annually to individuals who have enriched American culture by distinguished

achievement in the performing arts, a year later. Raitt, who is regarded by Rolling Stone as one of the 100 greatest singers and guitarists of all time, shot to stardom in the late 1980s and early 1990s with Grammy-winning albums “Nick of Time” and “Luck of the Draw,” which featured hits like “Something To Talk About” and “I Can’t Make You Love Me.” The 10-time Grammy winner released her 17th full-length studio album, “Dig in Deep,” to critical acclaim in 2016. However, no throwback to the late 1980s and early 1990s could be complete without New Kids on the Block. The boy band composed of Jordan Knight, Jonathan Knight, Donnie Wahlberg, Joey McIntyre and Danny Wood was created in 1984. But it skyrocketed in popularity in 1988 with the hit song “You Got It (The Right Stuff).” The band’s first chart-topping song was followed by “Hangin’ Tough,” “‘I’ll Be Loving You (Forever)” and “Step By Step.” NKOTB headlines what’s being billed as “The Total Package Tour,” which features Paula Abdul, 54, and Boyz II Men, who like NKOTB, are all in their 40s. “Our fans know we love to bring them a party, and this tour is no exception,” said Wahlberg, 47. “It’s not just a show, it’s an experience. Paula Abdul is such a pop icon and Boyz II Men are one of the best R&B acts of all time. It’s going to be a night of hit

after hit, and we can’t wait to deliver the ‘Total Package’ to our fans!” NKOTB has been no stranger to touring in recent years, but this summer marks Abdul’s first tour in a quarter century. Abdul took time off to focus on her career as an actress and a judge on the hugely popular “American Idol” TV show but was one of the biggest names in music three decades ago, when she had seven No. 1 hit singles, including “Straight U,” “Cold Hearted, “Forever Your Girl,” “The Promise of a New Day,” “Rush, Rush” and “Opposites Attract.” Four-time Grammy-winners Boyz II Men, who joined NKOTB and 98 Degrees on “The Package Tour” in 2013, is the best-selling R&B group of all time and has been cranking out hits for 25 years, including “Motownphiily,” “I’ll Make Love to You,” “End of the Road” and “It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday.” Waters, the 73-year-old former front man for the legendary band Pink Floyd, brings his “Us + Them” tour to coincide with his yet to be released “Is This The Life We Really Want?” album that’s expected to be
out this summer. The tour, which is named after the song on Pink Floyd’s 1973 album “The Dark Side of the Moon,” marks Waters’ first tour since “The Wall Live.” The worldwide tour, which ran from 2010-13, paid homage to Pink Floyd’s transcendent 1979 album “The Wall.” The tour grossed more than $458 million, a record for a solo artist. “Us + Them” will treat audiences to a new audio-visual presentation of material from Waters’ tenure with Pink Floyd, as well the debut of songs from his first studio album since 1992’s “Amused to Death.” “The tour is called ‘Us + Them’ because it is about reaching out, holding hands and understanding — particularly understanding the simple things I have been saying for the last 40 or 50 (expletive) years, which is ‘Building walls is not the answer,’” he told Rolling Stone. “It is particularly appropriate now that we’ve got this lunatic who talks about nothing else, about national exceptionalism — all the things that can be used to destroy all life as we know it.”

‘Hamilton’ highlights Fox Theatre’s Broadway in Atlanta season By Jon Gallo
Staff Correspondent
Consider yourself warned: “Hamilton” is coming to town as part of Fox Theatre’s Fifth Third Bank Broadway in Atlanta season, and if history is any indication, tickets won’t be cheap. The musical won 11 of the record 16 Tony awards for which it was nominated, as well as the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It revolutionized Broadway at the legendary Richard Rodgers Theatre in New York City, where it grossed more than $3 million during a standard eight-week run. Four years ago, “Wicked” earned $3.2 million in eight weeks, but it gave nine performances a week, one more than the industry standard. “Hamilton” tickets weren’t inexpensive, as it established the mark for the top premium ticket price charged by a Broadway box office, at $998, much higher than the previous mark set of $700 set by “Barry Manilow on Broadway” in 2013. But some spectators spent more than $1,000 to see “Hamilton” by purchasing tickets on the secondary market. “Hamilton’’ is based on Ron Chernow’s biography of Alexander Hamilton, an immigrant from the West Indies who played a key role in the American Revolution and went on to become the nation’s first secretary of the Treasury. The
musical can be controversial, as its politically driven content has been viewed as critical of President Donald Trump. One of the show’s most polarizing lines is, “Immigrants, we get the job done!” Trump took to Twitter to demand the cast apologize to Vice President-elect Mike Pence after a cast member — in a curtain-call speech — allegedly harassed Pence, who was in attendance, for Pence’s questionable stance on diversity. The fame of “Hamilton” has only grown since its national tour launched. It’s scheduled to stop in Georgia from May 22, 2018, to June 10, 2018, as the last of nine Broadway shows that make up the Fox Theatre’s Fifth Third Bank Broadway in Atlanta 2017-18 season. “Hamilton” will join Rodgers & Hammerstein’s “The King and I” (Sept. 26 through Oct. 1), “The Color Purple (Oct. 24-29), “Love Never Dies: The Phantom Returns” (Nov. 28-Dec. 3), “Rent” (Feb. 20-25, 2018), “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder” (March-13-18), and “Something Rotten!” (April 17-22). These seven shows are included in season ticket packages, while Disney’s “The Lion King” (Jan. 10-28, 2018) and “The Book of Mormon” (July 17-22, 2018) are “season options.” “This season is truly one for the books!” said Russ Belin, vice president of Broadway in
Atlanta. “The combination of major Atlanta first-run shows, returning audience favorites and classic Broadway tales makes this season the ultimate experience for any and every theatregoer. Atlanta audiences are accustomed to seeing the best of Broadway right here on Peachtree Street, and the upcoming lineup is no exception.” Here’s a look at the shows coming to the Fox Theatre between now and June 2018: • “The King and I”: The 2015 Tony Award winner for Best Musical Revival, the musical tells the story of the unconventional and tempestuous relationship between the King of Siam and Anna Leonowens, a British schoolteacher whom the king brings to teach his numerous wives and children. The story, which is set in Bangkok, Thailand, in the 1860s, features the songs “Getting To Know You,” “I Whistle a Happy Tune,” “Hello Young Lovers,” “Shall We Dance” and “Something Wonderful.” • “The Color Purple”: The 2016 Tony Award winner for Best Musical Revival, which is directed by Tony winner John Doyle, portrays the journey of a young woman’s quest of love and freedom in the American South. • “Love Never Dies”: The Phantom Returns: Perhaps the greatest love story to ever hit Broadway, this drama serves as the sequel to Andrew Lloyd
Webber’s “The Phantom of the Opera,” which has been seen by more than 130 million people worldwide and has won more than 50 international awards. • “Disney’s The Lion King”: Directed by Tony Award winner Julie Taymor, the story of Simba, Nala, Mufasa, Scar, Rafiki, Timon and Pumbaa comes to life in this six-time Tony Award winner that’s been seen by more 90 million people worldwide. The show features hits “Circle of Life,” “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” and “Hakuna Matata” • “Rent 20th Anniversary Tour”: It’s been 20 years since this transcendent rock musical first hit the stage, and it’s still going strong. Director Jonathan Larson’s Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-wining masterpiece follows a year in the lives of seven struggling artists who want to fulfill their dreams on their own terms. The musical’s universal themes of love, courage, perseverance and friendship are just as relevant now as they were two decades ago. The show features an array of hit songs, including “Another Day,” “La Vie Boheme,” “Take Me or Leave Me,” Seasons of Love” and, of course, “Rent.” • “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder”: The comedy and 2014 Tony Award winner for Best Musical tells the story of Monty Navarro, who wants to get rid of eight relatives between him and inheriting his
family’s fortune. • “Something Rotten!”: Brothers Nick and Nigel get a tip that musicals will be the next big thing, so they try to write the first show that combines singing, dancing and acting in this critically acclaimed comedy. The show treats the audience to numerous hit songs, including “A Musical” and “God, I Hate Shakespeare.” • “The Book of Mormon”: Here’s all you need to know: The New York Times calls the nine-time Tony Award winner “the best musical of the century.” The worldwide hit comedy chronicles the journey of two missionaries who travel across the globe to spread God’s word. Season tickets for the seven shows, which can be purchased by calling 800-278-4447 or by visiting BroadwayInAtlanta. com, start at $249, with prices varying depending on show time, day of the week and seat location. Single-show tickets generally go on sale to the general public eight to 12 weeks prior to opening night. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 8 p.m. Friday, 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday and at 1 and 6:30 p.m. Sunday, though times are subject to change. An American Sign Language-interpreted performance for the deaf and hearing-impaired is available for a pre-determined Sunday matinee of each engagement.

stories obviously a lot different than I can do radio.” Stand-up comedy, perhaps, has never been as big in Atlanta as it is right now, as the city is spawning breakout comedians like kudzu. Long known for Foxworthy and Ron White, Atlanta has increased its profile on the national comedic landscape in recent years. Clayton English and Rod Man, who both have roots in the city, were the recent winners of “Last Comic Standing,” a reality TV show for aspiring comedians that’s similar to “American Idol” and “America’s Got Talent.” Dauler said stand-up comedy shows such as the ones hosted by the Aurora Theatre are crucial to the genre’s growth. Comedians’ access to an audience has never been greater, as they can display their wit through Twitter, Facebook and other social media channels — all of which didn’t exist when Eddie Murphy, Jerry Seinfeld, Richard Pryor and Robin Williams were making names for themselves. “The comedy scene in
Atlanta is really robust right now,” Dauler said. “There are just so many really talented comics out there. I feel bad in a way, because there are so many great comedians who don’t have the access to radio like I have.” Dauler said he has no plans of leaving his morning radio show any time soon. But he also acknowledged he can’t reach his potential as a stand-up comic if he remains a morning staple. After all, no great stand-up comics — Jeff Dunham, Kevin Hart, Tracy Morgan, Wanda Sykes, Katt Williams, Larry the Cable Guy, and, yes, Foxworthy — reach the top of the mountain without spending years touring nationally, performing in clubs from Atlanta to Anaheim. “It’s a question that I have never thought about, but it would be a terrific decision to have to make: Would I leave radio to tour nationally?” Dauler said. “It comes down to this: Do I want to wake up at 3 a.m. to do my morning show or go to bed at 3 a.m. after a stand-up show?”

TRAVELING TROUPE
Alliance Theatre to take shows on the road for 2017-18 season
By Jon Gallo
AT A GLANCE
Staff Correspondent
The Alliance Theatre at the Woodruff Arts Center is undergoing a complete renovation, but the shows will go on — at other venues throughout Atlanta. The Alliance Theatre’s 49th season will feature 12 shows that will be hosted by 13 venues, from Spelman College to the Atlanta History Center to the Atlanta Botanical Garden, while the Alliance Theatre undergoes its first renovation since it opened in 1968. “It never felt like the right choice to simply produce the offcampus season in a single venue — or even in two venues that might approximate our two theaters,” Susan V. Booth said. “We have a once-in-an-organizationallifetime opportunity to truly be Atlanta’s theater. For 48 years, metro Atlanta has supported us by making the trip to our front door. It seemed like we had the opportunity to return the favor, and to do so in a way that celebrated the best of Atlanta by taking our work to a slate of cultural venues across our city. The Alliance renovation project will include a complete transformation of the Alliance Stage, the theater’s rehearsal spaces, education spaces and artist support spaces. The remodeling of the Alliance Theatre will provide significant enhancements to the patron experience, technology and infrastructure before it is reopens as Coca-Cola Stage in time for its 50th anniversary season late next year. “If we do this work right, each work will feel inevi-

tably matched to its venue, and we’ll be both taking our loyal supporters on a curated trip around their city and meeting new audiences that we can hopefully bring home with us in the years ahead,” Booth said. “The 2017-18 season is an audacious experiment. We are celebrating our city with the people who make up our city because we believe humans make humans better. We believe the Alliance is more than a building. We want to play everywhere.” The Alliance Theatre’s partners this season span every corner of Atlanta’s
perimeter, from the Fulton County Southwest Arts Center and Porter Sanford III Performing Arts and Community Center on Atlanta’s Southside, to the Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta and the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre on the Northside and all the venues in-between — Actor’s Express, Spelman College, Dad’s Garage, Atlanta Symphony Hall, Atlanta Botanical Garden, Atlanta History Center, The Galloway School, and the Conant Performing Arts Center at Oglethorpe University. “It’s a brave choice to go
to a different venue for each production, and the Alliance Theatre Board of Directors is thrilled to be going on this journey in every corner of our city,” said Hala Moddelmog, president of the Atlanta Metro Chamber and incoming co-chair of the Alliance Theatre Board of Directors. “What better way to meet our neighbors than to perform where they are and invite them to come back with us when we return to our home. We’re also excited to introduce our long time patrons to other cultural organizations they might not have had the opportunity to
visit before.” The Alliance Theatre will also produce four Kathy & Ken Bernhardt Theatre for the Very Young productions and one interactive play space at the Woodruff Arts Center. This season of Theatre for the Very Young will celebrate past and current world premiere productions based on children’s picture books. Fernbank Museum lets visitors weather the weather

Think you can successfully fly an aircraft through a hurricane? “Let’s just say it’s not easy,” said Kaden Borseth, the Fernbank Museum of Natural History’s director of Teen and Family Programs. “But it’s an experience.” Borseth should know. He’s played a vital role in Wild Weather, a Fernbank exhibit that focuses on extreme weather phenomena — ranging from the hottest of hot to the coldest of cold — to give visitors a unique look at all Mother Nature has to offer. Wild Weather shows just how unpredictable and powerful Mother Nature can be, as visitors are immersed in winter storms, devastating hurricanes, powerful tornadoes and thunderstorms, and extreme heat as they wander through eight zones. The exhibit, which runs through May 7, features a series of extreme weather experiences intended to teach the science behind severe weather, its connection to climate change, emerging technologies and forecasting techniques. “Wild Weather tells the story behind the weather so you will be less scared and you’ll be more prepared when the weather strikes because you will

understand the science behind it.” Visitors will experience Wild Weather through interactive exhibits, multimedia activities, models and largescale graphics. But they’ll also see if they can fly a research aircraft through a hurricane, in addition to viewing the devastation left by tornadoes and following turbulent cloud formations and lightning strikes. Visitors can be “struck” by lightning in slow motion and learn how lightning, as well as hail, are formed. “You also can be a scientist and study the weather and learn how weather is forecasted and see what implications climate change has on the
weather pattern,” Borseth said. “It’s a great exhibit for all ages.” Visitors can also make their own storm in the “Experience the Weather” zone, where the more they dance and move, the more energy they create to fuel a thunderstorm. “Wild Weather is incredibly pertinent to Atlanta residents because we experience everything from winter storms to tornadoes to heat waves in our region — all of which are featured in the exhibition,” Borseth said. “Fernbank is excited to offer the opportunity for guests to delve into current severe weather science, discover cutting edge technology and investigate the stories

of scientists, forecasters and passionate enthusiasts.” The exhibit is complemented by “Extreme Weather 3-D, which is Fernbank’s first Giant Screen 3-D film. The film, which requires an additional ticket to view, takes the audience with storm chaser and filmmaker Sean Casey, who documents extreme weather phenomena, including wildfires and tornadoes. “Weather is very hard to teach in a classroom,” Borseth said. “But it connects everyone because it impacts everyone wherever they live. “

Pining for the days when music told a story When I was almost 17 and started my career in media by hosting a weekend radio show on a country music station, I was no stranger to country music and the great stories told in its songs. It was at my sixth birthday party that my friends and I did the twist — a dance born from rock ’n’ roll — to the twang of a Loretta Lynn album. She became my musical hero, so my childhood was spent singing songs like “You Ain’t Woman Enough” and “Don’t Come Home A-Drinkin’.” For some reason, this did not cause my tee-totaling, Jesusloving, arrow straight parents to lift an eyebrow or worry about what road I was headed down. Mama always bought me the latest Loretta record.
player named Clayton Delaney. To tell a strong story in three minutes is, to me, the most admirable ability of any kind of writing. In the days when my radio career began, Dolly Parton had just released an album produced in Los Ronda Angeles, (Nashville was Rich horrified but she had just struck the first powerBeing a country muful chord on her way to sic disc jockey — as we becoming iconic), and were called in those days the Oak Ridge Boys, a — came as natural to me once-popular Southern as drinking sweet tea. I gospel quartet, were broke loved the music. I loved and struggling financially the singers, common and because their long hair, down-to-earth, who had beards and hip huggers mostly sprung up from weren’t selling to the dirt poor, and the musichurch crowd. cians, particularly steel “We had to do someguitar players. I especially thing,” lead singer Duane loved the story songs like Allen told me frankly in those written by Tom T. an interview. That “someHall who told of a waitress thing” was a country named Ruby or a guitar album called “The Y’all
Come Back Saloon,” which would give the Oak Ridge Boys the last laugh and launch them into a huge country career. It was country music’s original male quartet, though, that would be the ones who planted the seed that taught me to write a column like this. Their songs, primarily written by brothers Don and Harold Reid, often took a nostalgic look on life, and always there was a clever twist or take on words. They are probably the only act in country music who did not have a No. 1 or even a top 10 song about drinking, cheating or lying. While working around the house recently, I listened to Statler Brothers music. For hours. Over and over. Then, hours
turned to days. I couldn’t stop listening to the clever lyrics and perfect harmonies. It became so repetitive that Tink, who was working on a Hallmark movie, could not write unless “Flowers on the Wall” was playing on the Bose. “Put that song on again,” he’d call from upstairs. One of the first songs I played in my radio career was “The Official Historian of Shirley Jean Berrell.” It is a quick tempo, clever song that always had me happily singing along in the studio. It tells the story of a man who knows everything about a woman he loves such as her daddy’s middle name and why she’s scared of the dark. After making a convincing case for all he knows, the song ends
with, “The only thing that I don’t know is where she is right now.” After two weeks of listening to that album over and over, I realized that my own storytelling, particularly as it relates to this column, was seeded by the songs of the Statlers. Their snapshots of a simple time in a small town with friends and neighbors have always hugged my heart so tightly. It wasn’t Faulkner or Harper Lee who influenced me but a country music group. To quote one of their other hits, “It carries me back.” And that’s what we all love. Your job is cake Do you like cake? I love cake. Give me a piece of cake, and I’m happy. A good job is kind of like cake. One piece is excellent. Two pieces are good. But if you eat a whole cake, you’re going to stop liking cake. A lot of people are burned out at work. We’ve seen the Gallup numbers, over half the workforce is disengaged. Much of the widespread disengagement is traced to lack of autonomy and purpose. There’s also a third issue at play: fatigue. It’s why many people who used to like work now hate it. They’re exhausted from an overdose of something they used to enjoy. It’s like cake, 24/7. You wake up, there’s coconut cake by your bed. You get served up a big slice of chocolate cake at 10 a.m., there’s angel food for lunch. Afternoon brings raspberry with cream cheese frosting, on your way home fluffy white cupcakes pop up on your cellphone, there’s a big heaping of red velvet waiting for you on the kitchen counter, and after dinner, the people on the West Coast give you three big slices of carrot cake to eat before bed. By the end of the day, you hate cake. By the end of the week even the thought of cake makes you nauseous. You’re in cake prison. Everywhere you look is more cake. I recently got an email from a colleague apologizing for a three-day response time. “Apologies for the lag in responding,” she wrote. “The joy and pain of escaping to an island is often because the things we take for granted are unavailable. In this case of course, it simply forced me to unplug.” I wasn’t annoyed; I was cheering for her. When was the last time you fully unplugged? My colleague accurately described her escape as “joy and pain.” When you’re in the hyper-connected wheel of productivity, moving

away from it, even for a day feels uncomfortable. How long can you go without Lisa McLeod your phone before your fingers start twitching? I’m old enough to remember a time before email. When people went on vacation, they were unavailable. My father said in banking, people were required to take two consecutive weeks of vacation each year. The thinking was if someone was doing anything illegal or sneaky, it would show up in the second week. The unintended consequence was my father and his colleagues all had the chance to completely unplug for two weeks a year. Flash forward a few decades, we’re in a culture where people apologize for a three-day response time. I confess; I’m a person who tends to overindulge. When I was 10, I went to a church cake party. I was so excited, I dreamt about it for weeks. There was a table for every month of the year, and on every table were cakes representing that month. You could eat as much as you wanted. And the best part? I was going with friends, not my mom, so there was no one to reign me in. I ate so much cake I was sick for days. It was a full year before I even wanted to look at cake again. I learned my lesson on cake at age 10. It’s taken a few decades longer for me to learn the same lesson about work. If you run around eating everything on the table, it’s only a matter of time before you loathe the thing you used to love. Lisa McLeod is the creator of the popular business concept Noble Purpose and author of the bestseller “Selling with Noble Purpose.”
PETS OF THE WEEK
Each week the Gwinnett Daily Post will feature an animal available for adoption at the Georgia SPCA, which is located at 1175 Buford Highway, Suite 109, Suwanee, GA 30024. The hours of operation are Mondays through Fridays 11 a.m. until 7 p.m., Saturdays 11 a.m. until 5 p.m., and Sundays 1 until 4 p.m. You can see the rest of the adoptable cats and dogs at www.georgiaspca.org. 475817-4
These two adorable tuxedo girls, Amelia and Mavis, are
waiting for a family to cuddle. They need to go to a home together to comfort and snuggle with each other and their new family. They will prosper in an adult household and will integrate well with dogs and other cats. Screened-in porches are the favorite chill zone for these two indoor nature lovers. If you are looking for a friendly addition to your family, come on over to the Georgia SPCA, located at 1175 Buford Highway or contact 678-765-2726.

10 p.m. on FX Feud: Bette and Joan Season 1 of this critically acclaimed — and let’s admit, insanely entertaining — anthology series wraps with “You Mean All This Time We Could Have Been Friends?,” a poignant episode that echoes one of Baby Jane Hudson’s lines for its title. Before fadeout, Joan (Jessica Lange) accepts a leading role on a new film despite increasingly serious health issues. Meanwhile, faced with a new rival, Bette (Susan Sarandon) reflects on
the manufactured feud into which she and Joan allowed others to thrust them.
MONDAY 8 p.m. on FOX Gotham Riddle me this: The series returns for the home stretch of its third season with the new episode “Heroes Rise: How the Riddler Got His Name.” That villainous alias finally is assumed by Nygma (Cory Michael Smith) as he goes off on his own, apart from Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor), and causes problems for Bullock and Lucius Fox (Donal Logue, Chris Chalk). Gordon (Ben McKenzie) learns troubling information about his father’s fate. James Remar guest stars.
TUESDAY
Susan Sarandon
Eamons (Helen Hunt) about Joey’s death, but they also take separate paths ... Ashe with Javier (guest star Angel Bonanni), and Preston with Beck (Mack Wilds). Stephen Moyer, Will Patton, Aisha Hinds and Richard Dreyfuss also star.
9 p.m. on NBC Great News Executive-produced by “30 Rock” veterans Tracey Wigfield (also the creator here), Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, this new sitcom is both another television-workplace saga and a mother-daughter tale. The “Pilot” presents Briga Heelan
THURSDAY
Cory Michael Smith (“Ground Floor”) as a news producer alarmed that her new intern is — her mom (Andrea Martin, “SCTV”). John Michael Higgins and Nicole Richie costar as program co-hosts, with Horatio Sanz also featured. Another episode follows.

8:31 p.m. on CBS The Great Indoors Eddie (Chris Williams) is stuck emotionally following his divorce, so Jack (Joel McHale) sets up a double date for the two of them in the new episode “The Heartbreaker.” While they’re out, they encounter Eddie’s ex-wife (guest star Essence Atkins). Emma (Christine Ko) decides to call it quits with her boyfriend (guest star Andy Ridings), making Clark (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) debate whether to pursue her. Stephen Fry and Susannah Fielding also star. 9 p.m. on FOX Kicking & Screaming “Survival of the Fittest” is an appropriate title for the competition’s season finale, with the teams facing an elimination challenge that will reduce the
number of remaining duos from three to two before the hour is very old. Then, the participants still on hand reflect on the experiences they’ve had in the contest as they prepare to go into the final showdown. Hannah Simone (“New Girl”) is the host.
Frank (the late Bill Paxton) and Kyle (Justin Cornwell) in the new episode “Sunset.” Their investigation eventually focuses on a Hollywood producer known for his quirks.
FRIDAY
Back in 1849, a formidable enemy compels Young Eli (Jacob Lofland) to question where his loyalties truly lie in a new episode called “No Prisoners.” In the show’s “present,” 1915, the McCullough clan finds their past coming back to haunt them, and it looks as if the outcome may be deadly.
8 p.m. on CBS Undercover Boss The unscripted series in which company chiefs go incognito among their workers resumes its eighth season with the new episode “Taco Bueno,” in which that Tex-Mex restaurant chain’s president and CEO — Michael Roper — gives himself a different hair color and a goatee to get an on-the-floor perspective on his business. While showing just how unskilled he is with a forklift, he encounters one employee who’s particularly unhappy with management.

I’ve heard rumors about honest politicians. In fact, I once saw grainy video footage of one striding through the woods, taken from about 200 yards away. Or maybe it was just a bear. Sarcasm aside, most politicians lie occasionally, usually to make themselves look better and their opponents look worse. Some lie constantly. But that doesn’t mean everything a politician says is a lie, even if their opponents are screaming loudly that it is. Sometimes it’s the opponents who are lying. This raises the important question of what exactly is a lie. Here’s my definition: a lie is something you know isn’t true when you say it. Thus, saying something you believe to be true, but which later turns out to be mistaken, is not a lie. For example, a popular narrative on the left is that former President George W. Bush lied about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Not true. At the time, nearly everyone believed Iraq had WMD, including virtually all Western intelligence agencies, most members of the press and Democrat politicians like Hillary Clinton and John Kerry. For that matter, we did actually find WMD in Iraq, even if not as much as we expected. And it’s quite
