CSR
CHANGING THE LENS An insight
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) took off in a big way after 2013, after India became the first nation to legislate the need to mandatorily undertake CSR activities with the new Companies Act. Big Indian groups were already having their philanthropic arms/trusts which with a deep focus on CSR activities. But the legislative changes pushed all the big corporations to focus more on CSR. Social organizations who were working with different strata of the society and had difficulties raising the funds, now benefitted. That's because the corporates now wanted to join hands with the right partners to ensure the funds reached the genuinely needy. Large corporations have their own rules and regulations and rightly so – they are answerable to their stakeholders. Bigger organizations with a global presence have been able to adapt to the corporate requirements easily with their easy reach to the resources while smaller ones struggled. As a result, the genuine social organizations with feet firmly rooted to the ground and with deep connect to the needy society who could have utilized the funds more effectively have been losing out. CSR is looked at as a Corporate branding exercise and rightly so. In doing so, the geographic focus areas tend to be governed by the branding aspect more than the actual social impact. A couple of such instances which I have seen from sidelines, come to my mind. A social club in Goa implements a project for water harvesting in a Goan village which lies on the banks of a river. Just consider the possible impact if the funds were utilized for the same project in the water-starved regions of Maharashtra by tying up with any social organization there!! Every year, Monsoons is the time for Vanamahotsava. For most organizations, this is a symbolic, but high visibility social project. Instead of planting trees on the roadside, can - 01 -
we take a small patch of land from the forest department and plan and maintain the trees there creating green patches with much more environmental impact? I have no insights into the rationale on the projects and I am sure there will be good reasons for executing them, but I would like everyone from the corporate world to social organization to ponder over a few thoughts. Do we really have to focus on geographical boundaries? Can we look at the nation as one and put the efforts wherever the need is? We, as a nation always rally and help the remotest region when it comes to calamities like floods or earthquakes. Can we use similar guidelines for CSR? All organizations have annual performance reviews. We need to apply similar yardstick to our social projects – assess them periodically, realign, refocus, and take some hard decisions if required. This should also include assessing the partners in service and getting the right ones if needed. It would also be worthwhile to look and help some of the social entrepreneurship projects. If they succeed the impact could be multifold. All in all, while the CSR compulsion has brought in more funds to the social projects, I do feel we need to look at the activity holistically and with the ultimate aim to reach the neediest sections of the society. Refining social entrepreneurship ideas
Profit should not always be the only motive. ‘Doing good’ should also hold an important place in a company's business strategy. Deloitte’s Human Capital Trends study has revealed an interesting finding - A whopping 86% of surveyed millennial respondents said that the success of a business should be measured in terms of more than just financial performance. In simple words, an increasing number of the global population now believes that the head honchos should do the right thing when it comes to handling social issues. Profit should not always be the only motive. ‘Doing good’ should also hold an important place in a company's business strategy. SPEED With An Aim SPEED has been initiated by the GDP Foundation to build, test, and refine social entrepreneurship ideas. It is a platform designed to support the collaboration of undergraduate students (Arts, Commerce & Science), SHG (Self Help Groups), NGOs, and Industry such that it creates livelihood, entrepreneurial opportunities, and CSR in one go. SPEED aims to make this happen with minimal investment or borrowing. The GDP Foundation has been implementing SPEED internally right from its inception.
Parivartan Karo Na contest initiative leads to incubation of the participants who are now ready to be featured as entrepreneurs. SPEED @ GDP now focuses on their development by networking and collaborating to convert them into profit-making social enterprises. The Atma Nirbhar Bharat mission of our Prime minister envisions a growth trajectory to Made in India, which will foster the growth & development of the social start-ups. Growth & Development Platform Foundation (GDP Foundation) thrives to capitalize on this opportunity and contribute to the mission of Atma Nirbhar Bharat.
SPEED Social Startup Bank The GDP Foundation is always on a lookout for fresh ideas that can change the world. Currently, GDP Foundation has 68 potential projects that have immense potential to spring up as social startups. SPEED-ing past Year One A year into our philanthropic venture GDP Foundation has achieved several milestones focusing on initiatives that have started reaping benefits to the society. We have invested time & effort to utilize resources to transform social capital to affect society positively. Social start-ups/entrepreneurs are mentored to understand how a social issue/problem can lead to innovations to maximize social satisfaction.

CSR INCUBATOR Nurturing a new CSR Philosophy
The need of the day is to build scientific research-based CSR, factoring ‘felt needs’ and end to end consulting Corporate Social Responsibility - A Change For The Better In recent times, the concept of corporate social responsibility (CSR) has garnered a fastidious outlook by all stakeholders whether it is the Government, or private stakeholders, or social enterprises. Inexorably, CSR is here to stay and make its deep-rooted impact on our lives. CSR is no more a concept alien to us. In the generations to come, it will have its own meanderings albeit a posited approach to make a meaningful effect on the lives of many.
There may not be a single universally accepted definition of CSR. Globally the concept of CSR has evolved and presently encompasses all related concepts like triple bottom line, corporate citizenship, strategic philanthropy, shared values, sustainability and responsibility. CSR Needs A Scientific Approach The need of the day is to build scientific research-based CSR, factoring ‘felt needs’ and end to end consulting for industries and business firms to ensure high ROI, risk mitigation and welfare-based development. The very aim of GDP Foundation’s CSR Incubator.
Scholars and philosophers have given numerous definitions to CSR, however, its wholeness is achieved in practical terms and not within its strict meaning. CSR is not only a theoretical development but strongly include incorporating social characteristics or features into products and manufacturing processes, adopting progressive human resource management practices, achieving higher levels of environmental performance through recycling and pollution abatement, advancing the goals of community organizations et al. CSR has been given statutory protection and inevitably there is a growing interest amongst corporates and multi-divisional companies to make their CSR spend and stay within the ambit of the law so as to not attract penalties.
About CSR – INCUBATOR The GDP Foundation’s CSR-Incubator is a unique, innovative, pioneering platform for curating CSR ideas for industries, corporate, media houses, philanthropists, and NGOs. The CSR–Incubator will help you to create a research-based positive, sustainable impact.
However, one can easily assert and be mindful of the fact that no business norms, no standards, no regulatory frameworks, no stakeholder demand for CSR can vary the very core built within it, which is a larger good, a cause to be fulfilled and a purpose to be achieved. When the latter is in order, rest just falls as brickwork for a perfect foundation.
Social Startups ready for CSR Funding / Investment / Adoption GDP Foundation’s Parivartan Karo Na – contest cum internship, a highly appreciated platform has churned out 25 Hi-Potential startups that are ready for investment and CSR funding.

Large scale community involvement – towards inclusiveness
The need of the day is to build scientific research-based CSR, factoring ‘felt needs’ and end to end consulting Corporate Social Responsibility - A Change For The Better Even today, various villages in India give us a sneak-peek into the collective-effort way of life. During the summer season, the ladies work in conjunction with one another and prepare a variety of items such as papad, pickles, etc. Farming is an activity, which is still carried out in groups. Festivals have always been a sign of our togetherness and unity.
A robust and thriving developmental sector is primary if a country aims at equitable, inclusive, and sustainable growth. We need to be socially sensitive. One person equals one vote, equals one value. But the socio-economic realities are different and they still have a long way to go to match this vision. The growing disparity, inequality, and societal divide need to be reversed. That calls for large scale purposeful community involvement to integrate the innate wisdom and latent potential
However, the metro cities with lights so bright that they blind the stars, seem to have lost the beauty of unity. Everybody is working towards a personal goal or ambition. Today, each one of us is in a rat race, ready to trip the other and reach the destination before everyone else.
About HOPE-KART Hope-Kart is a large scale community-based, community-paced and business ecosystem oriented platform. It involves the community, and integrates its diversity and wisdom to make ‘Local go Global’. This is our small step to inch towards Atma Nirbhar Bharat.
This reminds me of a famous story that teaches us - One stick can easily be snapped into pieces. However, it is difficult to break a bundle of sticks. If you are divided, you are as strong as a single stick. It is time for us to unite, use each other’s strengths, and help each other to achieve one's goals. The pandemic has shattered us as an individual. But together we can overcome this financial crisis. Thus the GDP Foundation aims to empower people with varied strengths and capabilities to work together and turn the tide.
PARIVARTAN KARO NA Under this vertical, the GDP Foundation executed a contest-cum-internship initiative – Parivartan Karo Na. This initiative was launched on 14th April during the lockdown. In just 3 weeks, we received more than 125 registrations from people from different walks of life. Students, teachers, NGOs, professionals, principals, architects, doctors, and industries from different parts of the country, they all participated whole-heartedly.

GDP CHAPTERS Building new hopes with new Chapters
There is a definite shortfall of inspiration, competency, energy in most of the leadership positions in various institutions. The GDP Foundation seeks to fill in this gap together. Chapter by Chapter.
So if you are interested in being a part of this magical movement, start a new Chapter with us. Let us rebuild the world together by making social systems deliver. For further details, www.gdpideaz.org.
Looking beyond the obvious What the world needs right now is a helping hand that can repair, restore, and rejuvenate the human spirit. Yes, there are Samaritans, but either they are operating in isolation or their voices are very feeble. These change agents need reinforcement. Also, the youth needs a platform for building their capacities, they need an ecosystem to test their capabilities. Though we have thousands of Self-Help groups and NGOs, this huge resource remains untapped.

Visionary, strategic blueprint and excellence in execution - our ecosystem falls short in these three aspects. Hence to fill up the need-gap, the GDP Foundation in its second year of operation is embarking upon setting up Chapters in India and abroad. MR. KISHORE SHAH Managing Trustee, GDP Foundation
