Survival of

Picasso’s Bull ’

Also, survival is not just a physical thing. It’s a constant mental affair, more than ever in today’s dynamic times. So who shall survive? I spoke with the editorial team - Kishore Shah and Ameya Salatry to understand the things better.

Kishore Shah

Ameya Salatry

Prasad Deshpande: In these changing times, how would you redefine Survival? Kishore M Shah: The word survival is so strongly associated with “not dying “ more rather than enjoying living. Change has been always there, but its pace allowed the transition, adaptation. But from 90s, while we were just catching up with scientific innovations (which have also impacted survival issues) there has been a surge of man-made changes - direct or indirect. This has come in as a surge. There is a growing “polarization” in almost all walks of life, be it politics, economics, societal, media, office, cross borders. Almost everyday life has become like a “Rann bhumi” (Battleground) and hence there are multiple fronts on which the common man has to fight for survival, literally. Ameya Salatry: Survival is definitely of the fittest, not just physically but mentally, economically, culturally and devisely. These times have proven that wealth is not the only survivor tip but it takes much more than that to have am overall semblance to a balanced survival.

ablo Picasso’s The Bull is a series of eleven lithographs created in 1945. It depicts a bull at various stages of abstraction. The first lithograph in the series appears spontaneous. It feels as if the figure was sketched with a brush and ink. It is a fairly realistic depiction of the beast. The final lithograph is nothing but a simple line drawing to depict the bull.

Being Simple is a tough job.

PD: What dangers or pitfalls do you see in man’s desperation to survive? KMS: I see severe mental health issues cropping up. Revenge is a deep-seated instinct and to punish gives psychological joy, desperation and instant gratification, which are so cunningly conditioned in the community that we have almost forgotten to apply thought, deliberate and accommodate.

In these challenging times, one has to look deep within to identify the core. One has to observe a basic pattern amongst the noise, see basic forms amongst the complex, focus on crucial details that convey the majority of meaning.

AS: Desperation brings in shortfalls to quality. Whether it’s survival or anything else. A full effect to a balances survival cannot be achieved through desperate measure. A holitic approach to seeking desired results is key.

What Picasso did was simple. He took a complex object and simplified it. He stripped it down to its basic form to reveal an abstract pattern, which in reality is the core. In these testing times, only the abstract looking simple bull shall survive.

And the person who can get this right is the one who will survive.

PD: How should the top management contribute to the survival of the subordinates? KMS: Top management also has a figurehead role which has been conveniently forgotten. Most of the top managers interpret ‘Organisation’ as Machine. That’s where the problem breeds. Unless you accept the fundamental law that “One has to build people before building products & services” your organization will crumble like a pack of cards. Companies write off several losses genuinely and cunningly. So why is there was so much hue and cry during the pandemic? On one hand, people are called assets and on the other hand, they are simply severed in challenging

P

Most people think efficiency is all about making elaborate action plans and designing an intricate execution method. Because we have always been told - Do Not Take The Easy Way Out. However, we often fail to understand the difference between EASY and SIMPLE. 2

What is your SINGLE MINDED PROPOSITION? Your idea of your service or product is perfect only when you can explain it in one sentence. Brevity and clarity are crucial for survival. An entrepreneur has to economize on time and resources. To do so, he or she should be able to clear all unwanted aspects and highlight the core idea. And once that is done, then you should chase your dream like a soul possessed.

times. We need to balance out and hold on to each other. If we use collective wisdom we will be able to face challenges more effectively and efficiently and the top management needs to lead by example. AS: As Sir Richard Branson says, it’s not training that results into good employees it’s personal management that creates good and long term employees. Employees need care not just economic aid. PD: Survival of the fittest - Do you think it’s time to go beyond this phrase? Do you think the fittest have a social, moral and economic responsibility to take care of the weak in these difficult times? KMS: Absolutely. It should be The Survival Of All. It is the fundamental of any stable ecosystem. Those who are fit have to reach out to those who are unfit. Business and community are interdependent. They should nurture and nourish each other. I remember in my school days. Everyday morning, we all had to say our prayers and read the pledge - All Indians are my brothers & sisters... It is time to act on it. AS: Yes most certainly. Whether these times or not, those who are at a higher pedestrian socially or economically, there is a fundamental moral duty to give back to the weak and needy.

The definition of the word SURVIVAL is changing. Survival is not just me and mine, but we and ours. That’s because a social system is assumed to have a functional unity in which all parts of the system work together with some degree of internal consistency. The British anthropologist A.R. Radcliffe-Brown explored the theoretical implications of functionalism as a relationship between a social institution and the “necessary conditions of existence” of a social system. He saw the function of a unit as the contribution it makes to the maintenance of a social structure—i.e., the set of relationships among social units. It is time to understand ‘Functionalism’ and strive to keep the social fabric intact with a cumulative effort. After talking to Mr. Kishore Shah and Amyea Salatry, I feel this is the essence of the word Survival. And the person who takes into consideration his society while thinking about survival has found the answer to SURVIVAL OF .

Through our constitution and government structures, we have been able to build a model that can tackle the challenges of poverty, inequality, hunger, lack of education and health services as well as an environmental disaster. We can avert this crisis provided we bring back some of the virtues that we had started undermining in the last few decades in the name of individualism and liberalism. “Survival of the fittest” which elaborates as “It is not

Change is constant and to be responsive to change one must have a willingness guided by positivity. This can be achieved only if one has mastered the art of excellence in character and competence required to seize the opportunity towards positive change. The sub-elements of character are “Intent” and “Integrity”, for Competence, it is “Capability” and “Results”. Excellence is here to stay as long as humans exist. Before we dive further into the article, I would like to caution the pitfall that arises due to a lack of clarity between Excellence and Perfection. Excellence is superior performance, persistence, and the commitment to do something exceptionally well. Perfection is the action or process of doing or improving something until 16

perfection of doing 100% right as one starts to think about how

others will perceive if it leads to failure. This causes a lot of stress, delay in completion of a task, or too much critical thinking with no progress towards the end result. Connectedness Instinct Welfare of Labourers During this unprecedented pandemic situation, we are aware that the most severely affected ones are the labourers, migrant workers, helpers in household enterprise who received daily wages. There were laudable measures and support given by governments [1] and support extended by various organizations and individuals. The notion of connectedness has enabled support and help from across all quarters flowing in impartially enabling some relief to them. However, we do see gaps in such connectedness and ponder on ways to address the same. [2] brings out the various

The connectedness is an instinct within beings that instills sense of purpose and meaning in life. For example, one’s feeling of connectedness towards environment makes him more responsible in nourishing and grooming. Well-being of Elderly Community Another severely affected ones are the elderly community. Elders even in a normal scenario may have to handle several challenges such as managing their physical & mental health and it is needless to say their plight in such an adverse pandemic situation. Usually, they show high level of connectedness with relatives, offspring, neighbors and the environment. Such an attitude naturally benefits them and their wisdom and knowledge enables the young community learn and manage such challenging situations. [4] World health organization has come out with guidance for the elderly community towards handling situation like COVID19 insists on self-care, use of IT, community-based care and agefriendly environment. However, loneliness is one concern against connectedness for elders that pose serious challenges with respect to the public health of the elderly population. [5] brings 21
