Welcome to GDUSA’s 60th anniversary American Package Design Awards™ edition.
It features more than 300 winning pieces that exemplify and celebrate the importance of packaging to advance the brand, tell the story, amplify the experience, and create an emotional connection with consumers at the moment of truth. Effective package design has always added value, but it is now vital as an antidote to the fragmented, cluttered and ephemeral media world in which we live.
Packaging is a growth industry and its future is being driven and shaped by myriad factors — demographic and lifestyle trends, sustainability concerns, the rise of online and direct-to-consumer purchasing, the integration of smart technologies. Each deserves attention. But, in the end, the ascent of packaging is first and foremost a graphic design story: talented creators and producers developing smart and aesthetic visual communication in the service of human connection. YOU KNOW IT DON’T COME EASY
Many of the news stories we cover these days involve companies, organizations and brands seeking to reposition themselves as we emerge from the pandemic, and it’s legacy of short-term disruption and long term cultural transformation. The individual challenges presented by each project or campaign are case specific but there is one unifying truth: the successful rebrandings, reimaginings and refreshes dig deep to fundamentally understand what has shifted, to address and communicate its meaning in relevant ways, and to capture the sensitivities of the audience and the zeitgeist of the era. This is hard work and, frankly, some are better at it than others.
For example, the U.S. Army rebranding reported in this print edition is, in my view, a success because the client and creative team clearly confronted uncomfortable questions about the Army’s role in today’s society, and forged a promising, hopeful and nuanced verbal and visual message that can resonate with potential recruits. Similarly, the Ford Foundation, in a story you can find on our website, felt the need to redefine its mission going forward, and responded with a visual identity that strips away institutional pretensions and cedes the spotlight the grantees on the front lines of social change. It is modest, moving and meaningful.
In contrast, beleaguered New Yorkers were recently presented with a hackneyed revision of the iconic “I Love (Heart) New York” — morphed into a clunky “We Love (Heart) NYC” sequel — that, we are told, will “bring us all together” to revive a struggling city. In his New York Magazine review of the new “Milton Glaser: Pop” anthology, Adam Gopnik reminds us that the original symbol “is the closest thing there has ever been to a logo that changed social history.” This shabby update reminds us that clients and creators sometimes take the easy way out. As part of GDUSA’s 60th anniversary, we’ve compiled a list of our favorite schools and programs that prepare students to work as creative professionals. The mix is unique: it includes, of course, the traditional prestige institutions dedicated to art and design; a number notable university communications and design majors throughout the country; and several innovative and flexible online or hybrid programs for graduate, undergrad or continuing education.
The selection is based on both objective and subjective factors, and is admittedly influenced by our own decades long relationships with designers, educators, hiring managers and recruiters. The list is alphabetical. The reach is national. WASHINGTON DC While most real estate campaigns focus on price, location, and number of bedrooms, Design Army decided to focus on artistic appeal for a new DC apartment building called Gallery 64. The building shares a courtyard with the Rubell Museum of Contemporary Art, known for its avant-garde exhibitions and contemporary collection. Says Pum Lefebure, Design Army’s chief creative officer and co-founder: “The property is also surrounded by 15 other brand-new developments with similar amenities, features and fees – all targeting the same demographics. Design Army was tapped to bring their wild creativity to help Gallery 64 stand out in DC’s hyper-booming real estate market.” Lefebure says that the building’s branding is intended to be expressive, artful, and diverse. Many variations of the numeral 64 are used to represent all aspects of art from textile design to break-dancing, while curated photography visuals were concepted as modern “pop-art.” The colors are primary yet polished, and the patterns are said to allow for a controlled graphic volume based on application. Whimsical advertising plays on familiar iconography from the art world with knowing winks to Magritte’s surreal paintings and Alex Katz’s color-blocked portraits. Even Andy Warhol’s slightly skewed color palette becomes the basis of the campaign. “This feels anything but traditional,” Pum concludes. “The visuals are over-the-top weird, artful and pique your curiosity, yet totally makes sense with the progressive museums proximity.” designarmy.com

LONDON UK/NEW YORK NY NESQUIK has partnered with FutureBrand to deliver a modern brand identity intended to boost relevancy and enable growth into new audience segments. At the heart of the work is the company’s iconic mascot, Quicky, who has been reimagined for a digital future, while still feeling familiar and retaining its sense of fun. FutureBrand looked to the phygital (“physical digital”) world that the next generation play in for inspiration, drawing on cues from computer animation films and the gaming industry to bring contemporary relevance. To support the refreshed mascot’s roll out, FutureBrand also created a new brand expression and a wider “Quicky’s world” world in which he exists, speaking to the wide range of audiences who engage with the brand. The designers say that going beyond on-pack assets to focus on social media also enables NESQUIK to move towards being a truly digital-first brand that can speak more authentically to the growing teen market. FutureBrand also created a bespoke typeface called NESQUIK Sans, with the aesthetic reflecting a playful personality, and designed a new logo featuring an animated milk splash that also brings it into the digital-first world. The story of paper has always been a page-turner.
CHICAGO IL/WASHINGTON DC For the first time since 2001, the U.S. Army introduces a new brand intended to spotlight opportunities the Army provides youth, to counter negative connotations about military service, and to increase enlistment numbers after failure to meet recruiting goals last year. States Maj. Gen. Alex Fink, Chief of Army Enterprise Marketing: “All good brands must evolve to reflect internal and external changes to ensure an accurate depiction of the organization that also meets audience needs. Research tells us that youth seek out paths filled with possibilities of purpose, passion, community, and connection; however, they don’t see the Army as an organization that can set them on those paths. As part of our multiyear, research-based brand transformation process, we set out to identify a one-word brand positioning that encapsulates the Army’s promise to today’s youth. ‘Possibilities’ revealed itself as a singular option, solution, and inspiration.” The look and feel is centered on a reengineered five-point star logo coupled with the return of the “Be All You Can Be” tagline. They sit within an ecosystem that includes a custom font, expanded color palette, new iconography, photography, motion graphics and more. Among the key elements: the refreshed Army star; the existing color palette of black, gold and yellow is expanding to include an ownable “Army Green”; a custom font called “G.I.” used consistently across all branded contexts; and a suite of animated digital stickers that honor the Army tradition of patches and pins to aid digital story telling. The rollout features a campaign by DDB, whose Armyrelated activities are based in the Chicago office. Included are two films narrated by actor Jonathan Majors — star of “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and “Creed III” — which use Army history to showcase service as a driver of possibilities and a bridge between past and future. The films are paired with a mix of promotional assets across tv, print, digital billboards, streaming video, social and community platforms, and audio channels. NEW YORK NY Sex remains a taboo subject when discussing women over 50: studies show that up to 90% experience pain or discomfort during sex and nearly 50% give up on their sex lives. Tabu founder, Natalie Fretwell, set out to improve these statistics with a solution that would provide a sexual wellness routine with measurable benefits. She then partnered with branding and marketing agency SMAKK for a new identity that seeks to emphasize how optimal sexual health — with or without a partner — isn’t just a means to pleasure but integral to long-term well-being. The agenda included brand identity, packaging and ecommerce website for the sexual wellness kit as well as upcoming product launches. This meant reshaping the brand to be more approachable, dignified and credible in order to deconstruct the notion that sexual health has an expiration date. “We saw the potential to bring sophistication, discretion and credibility to a product category known for being anything but – typically marketed by way of brazen eroticism and cheeky innuendo,” explains SMAKK Founder Katie Klencheski. Aesthetically, the identity is described as “artfully unapologetic” in the way that it illustrates and talks about sexual wellness, with a bold wordmark as well as icons and illustrations informed by textbook-like scientific diagrams. Leveraged together, the elements are intended communicate complex topics and ideas in a way that feels necessary and credible rather than taboo or shameful, and that balances a science and health-centered lens with a touch of irreverent attitude. Typography finds a similar balance, using a headline style that has “a beautiful femininity” paired with a more utilitarian monospace. Agency Chief Strategy Officer Anna Kavaliunas notes that SMAKK drew insights from previous work with a sex products boutique e-tailer, which required an inclusive understanding of diverse audiences. “With Tabu, we realized that there was a similarly wide range of people we had to engage — those in relationships and those not, those who have used a personal massager before and those who haven’t, those who are embarrassed at the mere mention of one and those who aren’t, and a range of life stages where one would need to use a sexual wellness kit.” smakkstudios.com

BENTONVILLE AR. Walmart is out with a complete rebrand of its billion-dollar intimates and sleepwear private brand, in collaboration with creative company Mrs&Mr. The project renames, repositions and redesigns the retail giant’s 23year-old Secret Treasures, which already captures the largest customer base in the category including one of five women in the U.S. Mrs&Mr began the project by defining the brand positioning as a collection of feel-good apparel made to brighten and bring beauty to women every day. After several rounds of naming development, the company landed on Joyspun, a coined word that speaks to the emotional uplift and the quality of the collection. The logo serves as the visual anchor for the design system and is intended to be joyful and beautiful, while the letter forms are crafted to be feminine. A multicolored palette represents the diverse product assortment. Mrs&Mr chose Granary as the font for its clean, geometric, contemporary sans-serif look, with simple letter forms that provide a nice contrast to the logo. As for photography, casting seeks to provide a true reflection of the unique attitudes, ages and variety of body shapes and sizes that make up the customer base. “In order to reimagine Secret Treasures, we needed to understand the evolved competitive landscape, mostly defined by the rise of DTC brands in the intimates space,” said Kate Wadia, chief creative officer at Mrs&Mr. “And we needed to understand our consumer and the unique advantage of our collection. We uncovered that the intimates category was mostly muted, neutral, and quite serious. The door was open for us to design a joyful, positive, inclusive and uplifting intimates brand.” The identity is being rolled out across all packaging, in-store signage, e-commerce and digital channels. www.mrsandmr.com

STATESVILLE NC/BROOKLYN NY Looking to renew and refresh their purpose, Thorlo partnered with creative studio High Tide for a rebrand designed to change how people think about their socks. Founded in 1980, Thorlo was the first to innovate, manufacture and patent, activity-specific socks. High Tide recognized this legacy and set its sights on reinvigorating the brand to cement its place as an icon today and for generations to come. This began with the wordmark; High Tide returned to an earlier iteration of the brand’s name — from Thorlos to Thorlo — dropping the ‘s’ in a nod to its original 80s roots. They then redesigned it to feel monumental and proud in order to sit comfortably among the big names in sports and activewear. As the most immediate moment of impact, the wordmark had to be strong, bold and uniquely ownable. More broadly, the brand’s messaging was repositioned to stress innovation, performance and movement — each playing a part in building the voice and underscoring the idea that socks really do matter. Taglines like “Moving you since 1980” and “A decade of engineering for a lifetime of wear” balances Thorlo’s engineering prowess while celebrating, owning and inspiring movement of all kinds. Photography was also key to the rebrand as a way to reinforce their history and an opportunity for users to see themselves in the brand. Photos of people engaging in various sports activities have a sense of dynamic motion and archival imagery gives credence to the company’s record of performance. The highly anticipated Grand Central Madison has officially opened in New York City. Running underground for five blocks under Madison Avenue in Manhattan, the station-withina-station marks the largest rail terminal built in the U.S. since the mid-1950s and is expected to raise ridership of the Long Island Railroad by 40%. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority hired design firm Applied Design to work on Placemaking and Brand Strategy and their solutions include: a dynamic/animated/real time map of Long Island, depicting the route into the city and showcasing regional attractions and points of interest; overhead gateway signage that welcomes and directs visitors and provides harmony and continuity between the new and old stations; glass and marble exhibits that run the entirety of the concourse featuring immersive quotes from former and current New Yorkers to underscore the glory of the city; and brand and name “Madison Concourse” that pays tribute to the famous avenue above. “Applied Design sought to create a commuter experience that imbued the spirit of New York City, showcasing its diversity of thought, voice and scale that befit one of the greatest cities in the world, and one of the greatest structures in it,” said Brad Scott, Founder and Managing Director, Applied Design. Columbia College Chicago offers two programs in graphic design, a BFA and BA. Both degrees give students the tools and experience needed to launch a career in graphic design within a broader program of foundational studies in art and design. Students also gain a strong business foundation, which will prepare them to join a design firm, an agency, an in-house corporate design team, or launch their own freelance business. While every thesis project is unique, there are several common features: a focus on methodology, the application of a visual method to studio work, and the organization of the work in a thoughtfully argued written document and catalogue raisonné, also known as the “Thesis Book.” Students applying to the preliminary-year program typically have relevant experience in a field of study outside design and demonstrate evidence of visual acuity.

THE HOTTEST DESIGN ROLES AND HOW TO RECRUIT FOR THEM

With today’s economic uncertainty, a lot of creative leaders might be asking themselves: What’s going on in the employment market?
Is now a good time to hire? Well, there are few signs to indicate that the current job market isn’t losing steam.
A recent survey for the Demand for Skilled Talent report by Robert Half found that 58% of companies plan to hire for new roles in the first half of 2023, up from 46% in late 2022. Recruiting won’t be easy. Quit rates remain high, but that hasn’t translated into a conveyor belt of available talent. On the contrary, the pool of job seekers is shrinking, leaving nearly twice as many job openings as job seekers.
The outlook for the creative and marketing sectors looks much the same. Here we find that 59% of managers in this field are hiring for new roles in the first half of 2023 — and 84% report challenges in finding skilled talent. What kind of roles are creative and marketing leaders looking to hire for? Graphic designers, digital designers and art directors are currently at the top of their wish lists, according to Robert Half research. Additionally, the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that demand for these roles will surge in the coming years, with a notably faster growth rate for digital designers than the average for all occupations.
So what can you do to attract and retain these highly sought professionals? While a competitive salary is often make-or-break, it’s not the only factor that counts. Highlight the following selling points about your company throughout the hiring process to stand out from the competition and appeal to top talent.

1. Benefits and Perks That Matter
After compensation, benefits are the most important consideration for job candidates and are key differentiators between you and your competitors. Put them in job postings rather than waiting to mention them in interviews — this could make the difference between top talent applying to your company or scrolling right past. In addition to standard benefits like health insurance and paid time off, consider incentives such as matching 401(k) contributions up to a certain amount or providing life insurance coverage.
Perks go above and beyond the basics and can make all the difference in a candidate’s perception of you as an employer. Use them to your advantage by highlighting them during interviews or when making an offer.
Design and creative professionals, who may prefer nontraditional working hours, often appreciate the autonomy of flextime or the option to work fully or partially from home. Other popular perks for this group include employee discounts on products or services related to their industry, paid parental leave and stipends to set up a home office.
2. A Rewarding Company Culture
Is your company culture positive and inspiring enough to attract top talent? If so, share it with the world. Showcase your employees’ stories and experiences on your website or social media accounts. This shows potential candidates what it’s like to work for you and can entice them to join your team.
In addition, when your employees are happy and engaged, they become your best brand ambassadors. They’ll naturally spread the word to their talented friends and contacts, creating a pipeline of passive candidates who may not have been actively seeking a job but are open to new opportunities.
3. Values That Go Beyond The Bottom Line
The values that a business upholds are another essential consideration for job seekers. This is particularly true for design and creative professionals, who are often directly involved in promoting a brand’s values and ethos.
To appeal to these candidates, be prepared to share details about your socially responsible activities and diversity and inclusion record during interviews. Also mention them in job postings if there’s room.
By demonstrating your commitment to these values, you can show potential hires that your company is more than just a workplace — it’s where they can make a meaningful impact and be part of a positive community. Another way to woo values-driven candidates is to offer them VTO or volunteer time off. This allows them to help others without dipping into their paid leave.
4. Professional Growth Opportunities
Talented creatives who want to stay at the top of their game seek a role with professional growth opportunities — and they’re precisely the motivated people you wish to employ. That’s why it’s good to inform strong candidates about opportunities for career advancement early during the hiring process, perhaps even during the initial interview.
Make it clear that your company values employees’ development and wants to invest in their success. In practical terms, this could mean offering tuition assistance for professional certifications, reimbursement for memberships to design organizations or covering the cost of attending conferences and events.
In a continued tight labor market, it’s vital to convey to candidates what makes your company special. You already know your unique selling points, so tout them loud and proud. By communicating these areas of excellence early and often throughout the hiring process, you can position your company as an employer of choice and win over top design talent.
