LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER | THE OPPORTUNITIES ARE INFINITE Welcome to GDUSA’s 58th anniversary American Package Design Awards™ edition. It features a showcase of more than 300 winners for this celebration of packaging’s importance in advancing the brand, telling the story, amplifying the experience, influencing decisions at the moment of truth. Things move so fast these days that it takes a moment to remember that this competition spanned a period of headspinning disruption: the vaccine rollout, an insurrection, an impeachment, an inauguration, a coronavirus spike and the arrival of variants, and, just for good measure, a couple of major climate events. Yet engagement was exceptionally high, and the final showcase shapes up as among the biggest and certainly the best. This is a small part of a bigger picture: in the face of the unthinkable, the creative community has proven to be tough, smart, resilient, adaptive and future-oriented. Not to mention (as I always say about our GDUSA family) some mix of stubborn and crazy. IS GRAPHIC DESIGN DEAD? GORDON KAYE IS THE PUBLISHER OF GDUSA Comments, suggestions and letters can be sent to gkaye @ gdusa.com.
You may have been too pre-occupied coping with what we will euphemistically refer to as “the events of the past year” to notice a spate of articles and interviews proclaiming that “graphic design is dead.” As if we need more negativity. Trust me that these pieces are proliferating; an especially provocative specimen by Neville Brody appeared recently in AIGA Eye on Design. To catch you up, the argument in favor of expiry is that the great traditional showcases of breathtaking designs, such as mass market magazines, have given way to often ephemeral online platforms and small screens where UXers, coders, developers, programmers and social media marketers are the stars. Graphic design is a bit player cast in a minor role. “I think the first 100 years of graphic design, which probably started with Dada, finished with Covid,” states Mr. Brody, more, I suspect, to provoke than to edify, though his words pack a punch. The flip side of the argument is that graphic design is alive, adapting and evolving. Traditional mediums are not all disappearing: you need only look at today’s robust package design showcase, or contemplate the critical role posters, signs and infographics play in COVID health and safety communications, to see that many established venues abound. Moreover — and more fundamentally — graphic design is media agnostic. In its highest form, it is about visually expressing the truth and essence of a thing in order to inform, persuade, entertain, brand, sell a product, service, idea or cause. That function is at the core of human connection, regardless of where the eyeballs land, and designers are uniquely suited to succeed. I don’t make light of the dislocations in the way we create and produce content. These are wrenching, the impact is uneven, and I’ll bet I hate change more than you. Still, in a recent podcast, when asked about the post-pandemic future of our community, I surprised even myself by seeing the good news for what it is: “In the crucible of the past year or so . . . business and society has come to recognize that effective graphic communication is central to . . . the positive movement forward of our world.” I rarely listen to myself or take my own advice, but that is not half bad. Jarrett Fuller, a true industry thought leader and director of multidisciplinary design and editorial studio twenty-six, weighed in on this topic (“Considering The Death of Graphic Design”) a few years ago with what, for me, is the winning argument: “In addition to advertisements, periodicals, books, printed forms, packages, industrial products, signs, and tv billboards, we’ll add interfaces and phones and watches and glasses and thermostats and dashboards. The role of the designer has always shaped how humans interact with the world and with each other. That role may stay the same, but the opportunities are infinite.” If I had a mic, I’d drop it.

PACKAGE DESIGN AWARDS In spite of everything, this year’s showcases has grown to one of our largest ever. More than 300 winning projects and campaigns from talented design firms, agencies, inhouse departments and institutions, scaled from nearly ten times the entries. Why is package design so vital and alive? Makers, marketers, designers, and sellers are challenged as never before to convey the message, tell the story, advance the brand, make the sale. Our 58th anniversary American Package Design Awards™ celebrates beauty, of course, but more importantly, the power of design to forge an emotional link with the buyer at the moment of truth.

FRESH | LANDSCAPE BUILDS INCLUSIVE IDENTITY FOR HOUSING NON-PROFIT
SAN FRANCISCO CA Created in collaboration with San Francisco design studio Landscape, The Kelsey has launched a new brand identity that signals its disability-inclusive approach to housing and its community partnerships. The Kelsey is a non-profit that centers on the lived experience of people with disabilities to innovate multifamily housing that is affordable and inclusive. To signal the organization’s progress and engage potential partners, the identity centers around the idea of “building opportunity through inclusivity.” The visual execution reinforces inclusion through whimsical illustrations; bold, universal typeface selection; and a color palette based on a variety of skin tones. Complementary photography portrays the lived experience of people with disabilities. “Design — which includes language — can play a critical role in making complex social topics accessible to broader audiences,” says Adam Weiss, creative director of Landscape. “But as importantly, good design also makes these topics easier to act on for everyone, inspiring more diverse groups of people to participate in positive social movements or changes. In the case of The Kelsey, designing for inclusivity also meant designing for and with people who have disabilities. Our team worked with disability advocates and external consultants to ensure that the design of the brand and site, from the user experience to colors, images, and words was designed to be as accessible as possible to people with a broad range of abilities.” Adds Micaela Connery, Co-founder and CEO of The Kelsey: “Too often beauty is dictated and is reserved for the select few, and not inclusive of the communities they serve. We don’t believe that should be the case.” thisislandscape.com

FRESH | MATCH.COM REBRAND COMMUNICATES TRUST
NEW YORK NY COLLINS and online dating giant Match have
partnered to evolve the 25-year-old brand, seeking to invite thoughtfulness and trust back into a space the client had pioneered. Reacting to an online dating world cluttered with websites and apps — many of which have turned the process more into a game than a quest for true connection — the creative team worked to create a reassuring brand experience that helps users focus on what really matters: getting to know someone. To that end, COLLINS worked cross-functionally with the organization’s executive, product, design, and marketing teams to develop a brand strategy that emphasizes the company’s longstanding experience and creates a mood that strives for the effortlessness of a concierge’s wave, welcoming but almost invisible. Across all touchpoints “Match” itself became a simple statement and a clear ambition. The color palette eschews bright colors to something more inviting while the new logo moves the heart symbol from the top to the bottom — full stop — indicating the brand’s confidence in the service they provide. Comments COLLINS Partner and Creative Director Nick Ace: “When someone’s been doing their job really well — for 25 years — they present a sense of calm, assuredness, and confidence ... We designed every piece of the brand and app to make good on that. The new identity reflects a brand that is wise, experienced, and has navigated every possible conversation.” www.wearecollins.com

FRESH | KRESS COLLECTION GETS A CLOSE UP
NEW YORK NY C&G Partners, a creative studio dedicated to
design for culture, has created a rich new website for the Kress Foundation, which advances “the study, conservation, and enjoyment of the vast heritage of European art, architecture, and archaeology from antiquity to the early 19th century.” The online resource brings over 3,000 works of art from the Kress collection into the public view in a single place, and allows extremely close up views of the entire set. Because the Collection is physically distributed to many different places, this digital experience is the only way to see it all at once. C&G Partners worked closely with the Kress Foundation to ensure that the site redesign serves those they support — including art historians, conservators, museum curators and educators, and librarians — so that professionals and enthusiasts alike can explore the full breadth of the collection in a highly visual manner and via different search offerings including visual gallery, interactive map, and comprehensive list layouts. A powerful digital viewer based on the IIIF API allows users to zoom to levels that expose brushstrokes, paint textures, and the evidence of time in extreme detail, while search filters have highly detailed capacity. In addition to the Collection, the site also showcases the Foundations’ grant programs and hosts an interactive timeline of the history of the organization. www.cgpartnersllc.com

FRESH | MCDONALD’S NEW SYSTEM PLAYFUL AND PRACTICAL
CHICAGO IL Pearlfisher has partnered with McDonald’s in a multi-year redesign of the restaurant giant’s global packaging
system. At the center is a graphics system which serves as a single visual framework for the brand’s portfolio of products. Transitioning from a design system with prominent on-pack messaging, new graphic representations of each separate menu item creates a playful visual system no matter what combination are offered or served. “Our task was finding out what was really special about each menu item to design a system that would make it easy for others to do the same,” says Matt Sia, Creative Director at the independent brand design agency. “We aimed to find the most special, recognizable and iconic expression of each — celebrating them in a way that makes people smile. Bringing personality to life through simple illustration allows for the packaging to be functionally unique, easy to identify, aesthetically minimal and, most importantly, emotionally joyful.” Each familiar item is housed in new boxes, sleeves, wrappers as well as cups: Egg McMuffin feature a yellow yolk centered on an all-white wrapper; graphics for the Quarter Pounder and Big Mac boxes evoke the signature burgers; the Fillet-O-Fish box features two-toned ocean waves; and the famous fry sleeve now has thick yellow lines inside. The Pearlfisher solution has a deliberately practical effect as well: to boost efficiency during operations. Each wrapper and pack is identifiable where order assembly occurs. “These easy-to-understand graphics drive recognition regardless of where in the world orders are being assembled, shared, and enjoyed,” adds Pearlfisher’s Sia. www.pearlfisher.com

FRESH | MOYNIHAN TRAIN HALL RE-IMAGINED AS GATEWAY
NEW YORK NY Watson & Company (W&CO) has created the brand
experience and identity for Moynihan Train Hall — an extension of Penn Station and NYC’s most significant civic infrastructure project in decades — the result of a public-private-partnership led by New York State and managed by Empire State Development (ESD). Founded in 2009, W&CO was among the early agencies creating visual identities for hospitality brands rooted in a sense of place; their work with Jeff Koons, Four Seasons, Art Basel and Mandarin Oriental among others, tap into the legacy of location, architectural history, and community ties. Here, rather than view the project as a civic infrastructure challenge, W&CO took direction from ESD in re-imagining the train hall as playing host to NYC’s worldly visitors. Thus, the brand embodies a warm, welcoming, and uplifting gateway. The concept that underpinned the brand was “A Love Letter to New York.” W&CO further teased out the concept of embodying New York’s past, present, and future in brand messaging with the voice of intelligent and contemporary New Yorker speaking to the city with self-awareness, honesty, humor, and wit. The project included the brand’s incorporation into the building itself, to the interior and exterior signage, typography, brand marks, logos, and brand colors, as well as [print, digital and onsite applications. The primary brandmark — an abstract eagle — was inspired by the meeting points and connection of people around the station, and is a nod to the USPS logo and thus the legacy of the 100+ year old Farley Post Office building where Moynihan Train Hall now stands. The secondary mark was inspired by the traditional form of the postage stamp — paying homage to the romance of letter-writing and celebrating human connection. Also included: a sophisticated inlaid seal inspired by the history of Farley Post Office at the bottom of the Hall’s Grand Staircase, and custom typography by Tobias Frere-Jones etched into the foundation of the building and adorning the front of the station in bronze letters. watsonnyc.com

FRESH | LOGO DESIGN REVEALS PFIZER’S DNA
NEW YORK NY Much-in-the-news Pfizer has a new logo, dropping its
traditional blue-pill symbol in favor of a double helix DNA spiral. “We’re unlocking the pill to reveal the DNA at the heart of Pfizer,” the company said. Officials add that the change in the company’s emblem reflects its purpose and dedication to harnessing the capabilities of science. In a note to employees, CEO Albert Bourla touts the rebranding as “representative of the company’s shift from being a diversified business to a biopharma business focused on breakthrough science.” Notable design changes, in addition to the logo, include a vibrant two-tone palette in place of the familiar Pfizer blue — doubling down in an industry “awash in blue” — and the adoption of a new typeface, Noto Sans — developed by Google to internationalize the internet — which is said to accommodate more than 800 languages across the globe. Credits for the digital first identity go to Team, a Brooklyn NY-based design firm that works with cultural institutions, startups, and multinational corporations alike. Team officials state: “As we learned more about the transformation underway at the company, our conversations with Pfizer scientists led us to a powerful unifying symbol, the DNA helix … We brought Pfizer’s new logo to life by unlocking the iconic original ‘pill’ shape to reveal a double helix spiraling upward. The logo now imparts a sense of ascending motion. The rotating form inspires progress, change, and overturning old realities in search of tomorrow’s innovations. The unity of their interlocking forms reflects Pfizer’s passion and dedication to both scientific innovation and the well-being of patients. Of the program overall, they say: “The effect is simple and dynamic. These visual attributes strike a balance between science and humanity – a balance that defines the new purpose-driven company where science and people come together.” team.design

FRESH | MULLENLOWE HELPS LIGHT FUSE
BOSTON MA FUSE Group (formerly Liberty Construction Services)
wanted to be known as more than just a respected builder, they wanted to be recognized as an industry trailblazer. To address this ambition, MullenLowe Design created FUSE — from the new name to a comprehensive brand identity — introduced this Spring. When delving into the culture and purpose of the company, the design team was inspired by the core definition of “fuse”: bringing together diverse inputs to distribute fierce energy across spaces. The logo’s bold Fusion — a chartreuse, electric yellow combined with typography inspired by construction documents — is deliberately different than typical palettes and identities in the category. The typography, with Pilat as the feature typeface, is designed with a bold weight and square stance. The elements of precision are even calculated into the wordmark of the logo, which evokes a stencil motif often seen on job sites, with consistent negative space and angle cuts using mathematical proportions to render ‘FUSE’ into a perfect square, vertical, or horizontal lockup. A new tagline — “Start Something” — is meant to channel the company’s commitment to transforming the construction experience. “FUSE’s brand identity perfectly combines the elements of building with its active and electric culture,” Sean O’Brien, Director, MullenLowe Design. “Their new look is not unlike a sports performance brand and is a major departure from anything you’ll see on a construction site or in an office. We are confident that the new company image will galvanize a sense of pride and forwardthinking, whether worn on a jacket, presented to client or signage on a jobsite.” MullenLowe Design is part of Mullen Lowe U.S., a subsidiary of the Interpublic Group of Companies. us.mullenlowe.com

FRESH | COFFEE CHERRY BECOMES BADGE OF PROTEST
ACWORTH GA For many, coffee is simply a pleasurable part of a daily
ritual and a source of energy. But a more complicated truth is that producers of said coffee, indigenous farmers, usually don’t participate fully in the industry’s profitability. This is what inspired the creation of the Coffee Coalition for Racial Equity (CCRE), dedicated to building an equitable coffee trade. And when the organization needed an identity to match the mission, they turned to ThoughtMatter design studio for branding rooted in the traditions of protest that calls attention to the growers behind the brew. Engaged their ROCK-IT system (an iterative, design sprint-like branding process created for non-profits and startups), ThoughtMatter developed and solidified a single big idea: the coffee cherry, the fruit from which the beans come, as a symbol of protest. “The coffee cherry is not what most people think of when they think of coffee. They think of the bean,” says ThoughtMatter Creative Director Ben Greengrass. “However, using the bean as a symbol disregards the labor and work of people of color, who historically faced racism within the coffee industry.” The oval shape of the coffee cherry became the anchor of the identity providing a badge-like symbol of the movement. Gradients represent the shift towards racial equity with green representing the history of race in coffee, yellow signifying education, and red encouraging urgent action. The typeface, Martin, was also chosen for its historical significance – designed by Tre Seals, it is inspired by the typography on posters of civil rights movement protests. Each element is woven together into a complete branding system. The CCRE was founded by Phyllis Johnson, who was inspired to start the organization after writing a widely applauded open letter about racism and the coffee industry in late 2020. www.thoughtmatter.com

Students at Tyler are mentored by faculty members who understand the design profession’s exacting standards, are committed to the growth of each student, and are invested in their post-Tyler outcomes. Core pillars of the department include authorship, entrepreneurship, and design for social justice. Tyler students are taught a conceptual approach to the design process — they develop skills in research, image-making, typography, and visual storytelling, and they learn to work with information and content, creating digital systems and narratives across new and emerging technologies. The result is that student work is frequently featured in national and international design competitions and publications, and graduates are employed by influential studios and agencies. Based at Temple University, a great urban public university, Tyler puts students in a position to take advantage of a vibrant campus with more than 300 academic programs and the resources of a city with a reputation as a world leading (and affordable) art center. Students attend lectures and exhibitions at museums and galleries, participate in community art projects, and earn high-profile internships. tyler.temple.edu/programs/graphic-interactive-design THOMAS JEFFERSON UNIVERSITY PHILADELPHIA PA The Visual Communication Design program at Thomas Jefferson University cultivates design strategists with an innovative spirit and superior critical thinking skills applicable to a diversity of human needs. The curriculum fosters an appreciation for design as a cultural craft with a relevant historical background and a rapidly evolving future that includes multiple disciplines. The program develops students who can contribute intelligently and responsibly at a global level to further the common good. Trained through Nexus Learningô, Jefferson’s pioneering approach that prioritizes project-based learning and realworld collaborative experiences, student work from this program is regularly recognized in nationally in competitions, exhibitions and publications. www.jeffersonvcd.com UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL OKLAHOMA SCHOOL OF DESIGN EDMOND OK The School of Design at the University of Central Oklahoma places student-centered excellence at the program’s core. This philosophy and practice are eloquently captured in a quote by senior design student Cynthia Luong: “Design isn’t just about what you learn from your peers and mentors but also about the lasting connections and comradery with them. You experience everything together, the ups and downs, the successes and failures, the wins and losses. You learn valuable life lessons — to be more independent, confident, decisive, and flexible in your way of thinking, not just in design but in everyday life. Each class is a different experience and challenging both mentally and physically, and every one of them as important as the next. One such course is the working design studio, Clocktower. This studio is an excellent medium between a school setting and actual real working experience with clients. Clocktower was where I learned to manage time, take critique, and hone my creativity. UCO Design is a milestone, as well as a fantastic stepping stone into the world of design. One that I will remember as being one of the greatest experiences of my life.” www.uco.edu/cfad/academics/design
UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN STAMPS SCHOOL OF ART & DESIGN ANN ARBOR MI Fueled by the scholarship, research, and resources of a tier-one research university, the Stamps School of Art & Design provides a unique approach to transdisciplinary, inquiry-led design practice. Our graduate and undergraduate students enjoy a supportive, curiosity-filled culture of makers and scholars seeking to activate their creative practice as an engine for cultural change and innovation. The school offers undergraduate degrees in art and design and two graduate level degrees: an MFA in Art and an MDes in Integrative Design. Called “one of the best integrations of design approaches in an MDes program [...] anywhere in North America” by Peter Jones, author of Design for Care: Innovating Healthcare Experience, the Stamps MDes is a collaborative, project-based, two-year program undertaken in deep partnership with industry and non-profit partners. At Stamps, Integrative Design is not locked into one disciplinary design strategy. Instead, Stamps students are called upon to be adaptive, utilizing multiple tactics as the project or problem requires. www.stamps.umich.edu

study. Students, faculty, and guest designers take part in a weeklong residency on the historic campus in Montpelier VT to begin each semester. They then return home and work from an individually crafted study plan with a faculty advisor for the remainder of each semester. Graduates emerge with new research methods, critical expertise, a supportive international network of fellow designers, and a body of design work that is personal and relevant to the next stage in their design careers and creative lives. vcfa.edu/graphic-design VIRGINIA COMMONWEALTH UNIVERSITY (VCU) ROBERTSON SCHOOL OF MEDIA & CULTURE RICHMOND VA The VCU Advertising program is centered on professional practice, studio intensive coursework and experimental collaboration in education. Our coursework focuses on smart thinking and rigorous practice in creative and strategic advertising. In our creative courses, students learn how to create and execute big ideas through the crafts of art direction, copywriting, design and storytelling. These classes emphasize the attributes and transferable skills necessary to succeed in advertising and media communications. robertson.vcu.edu VIRGINIA TECH SCHOOL OF VISUAL ARTS BLACKSBURG VA Virginia Tech pushes the boundaries of knowledge by taking a hands-on, transdisciplinary approach to preparing students to be leaders and problem-solvers. In the senior year, they can focus their creative energy by customizing their studies in entertainment, motion, advertising, publication, or environmental graphics. The degree program focuses on the development of a cohesive, investigative body of work, also known as the student’s thesis. It is conceived as a loose framework within which each student’s visual method is deployed across many diverse projects during his or her two-year course of study. While every thesis project is unique, there are several common features: a focus on methodology, the application of a visual method to studio work, and the organization of the work in a thoughtfully argued written document and catalogue raisonné, also known as the “Thesis Book.” Students applying to the preliminary-year program typically have relevant experience in a field of study outside design and demonstrate evidence of visual acuity. art.yale.edu/GraphicDesign

Even in the best of times, makers, marketers and sellers are challenged as never before to tell their story and have it heard. Package design and related disciplines are increasingly the difference makers in communicating the message, advancing the brand, and influencing the purchasing decision. The outstanding work showcased here — from 200 elite designers and producers — attests to the reality that is 2021. Our annual competition celebrates beauty and style, of course, but even more important, the power of deliberate design to forge an emotional link with the buyer at the moment of truth. And it is somehow a comment on the ongoing vitality and centrality of package design that — despite disruption, turmoil and turbulence — great work is being done and this showcase has grown to one of our biggest ever.

E-commerce was gradually building anyway, but the pandemic forced brands to pivot and make advancements much faster. THE ART OF SUSTAINABILITY Consumers are becoming more educated about sustainability and demanding more from brands. According to research from the Paper and Packaging Board, "Two-thirds of people say sustainable packaging plays a major role when buying a product.” Brands are reacting by in-vesting in natural-looking, responsibly sourced, or FSC-certified packaging containing post-consumer content. There is also a growing interest in cutting out single-use plastic from the packaging equation, forcing brands to search for paper

alternatives. Many companies are very interested in promoting a circular economy, an economic system aimed at eliminating waste and the continual use of resources. Because paper can actually be recycled up to 7 times, it is an integral part of a closed loop/circular economy. Another way of supporting the circular economy is by industrial composting or breaking down products through composting to benefit the environment and avoid landfills. Neenah offers many folding board products that can be industrially composted as another way to further our commitment to providing the most sustainable products available. For maximum impact, Bloom Farms offers alternative packaging beautifully decorated with foil stamping on NEENAH® Folding Board Bright White Vellum.

RETAINING YOUR TOP CREATIVES IN UNCERTAIN TIMES BY DIANE DOMEYER
When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, many design firms were forced to reduce staff in order to stay afloat. A year down the line, the economy is starting to rebound, but managers are facing a new challenge: employee retention. The disruption caused by lockdowns and remote work has taken its toll on creatives. With the risk of burnout at an all-time high and morale running low, how can managers support top performers and stop them from jumping ship? Here’s how to fix things before it’s too late. WHY ARE MANAGERS WORRIED? A survey by The Creative Group revealed that 92% of marketing and creative leaders are concerned about losing workers to other job opportunities in 2021. According to The Creative Group 2021 Salary Guide, some main reasons for retention concerns are: • Employee morale has suffered. • Employees are managing heavy workloads. • Salary increases have been suspended.
8 WAYS CREATIVE LEADERS CAN RETAIN THEIR TOP TALENT With many companies still struggling to get back on their feet, the budget for perks and pay raises may be limited. However, there are plenty of ways to incentivize your staff without breaking the bank. 1. Embrace Flexibility Even before the pandemic, creatives were ahead of the curve when it came to remote work. Now that many more are working from home, they appear to like the arrangement. In a survey of creative professionals by The Creative Group and AIGA, the professional association for design, two-thirds of workers who transitioned to remote working during the pandemic said they have enjoyed the lack of a commute, while 68% have found

with home-schooling or caring commitments. Top performers have come to expect workplace flexibility, which is why it’s now a key retention strategy.
6. Foster Inclusion and Diversity An inclusive team is an effective team. Your company benefits from a range of employee experiences and perspectives, and promoting a culture of inclusion and belonging will help your em-

7. Boost Team Spirit Stress is the enemy of creativity, but fun can keep it at bay. As a

manager, it’s up to you to set the tone for your team and create an upbeat work culture. Away days and after-work drinks might not be in the cards right now but find creative ways for your employees to connect. Whether it’s a virtual quiz, online escape room or simply encouraging your team to spend five minutes of their meetings catching up, remote team-building activities can boost morale and build a sense of camaraderie.
3. Recognize Achievement Now that your employees are part of a dispersed team, it’s easy for them to feel like their efforts have gone unnoticed. Not having your hard work recognized can deflate morale. With so much on your own plate, you may be overlooking less immediate demands like acknowledging good performance. Providing feedback and sharing team wins are important ways to motivate your staff.
8. Listen and Learn When it comes to supporting your staff, there’s no one-size-fitsall solution. Ask each of your team members what it would take for them to feel more satisfied in their role. Think back to the Robert Half survey about the main reasons marketing and creative leaders are concerned about losing workers. Maybe employees want more autonomy or creative freedom, or perhaps the volume

adopting can help you keep them on board.
5. Paint The Big Picture When people lose sight of their company’s mission, their role can feel insignificant or even pointless. Creative professionals are more engaged if they find purpose in their work. As a creative leader, try to help staff understand how their work helps move the firm’s strategic goals forward and what purpose they or the organization serves. Once employees see the connection, they are more likely to make meaningful contributions. With that comes greater job satisfaction and less temptation to look for opportunities elsewhere.
