LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER | EVOLVING AND EXTENDING This spring I was involved tangentially in preparing our new website. By tangentially, I mean that everyone here made believe I was contributing and I made believe that I believed them.

GORDON KAYE IS THE PUBLISHER OF GDUSA Comments, suggestions and letters can be sent to gkaye @ gdusa.com.

This approach worked brilliantly; the site is wonderful and each new element is a pleasant surprise to me. The idea behind GDUSA is as straightforward now as when founded more than 50 years ago as Graphic Design USA. We gather news, ideas and information, and then present it to be accessible, inclusive, and supportive of the creative community. Today GDUSA is a printed magazine still growing in size and stature, but it is also a website, an enewsletter, a digital magazine for desktop, tablet and phone, a competition organizer, and a generator of social media with lots of print readers and even more e-subscribers. In this spirit, the new site is freed from the rhythms of the print publication, with maximum flexibility to deliver timely content everyday while still integrating the best of the magazine, with larger and more impactful imagery, with a cleaner reading experience across devices, and with more paths to reader engagement. Hence, the site is of the moment but, at its core, simply evolves and extends who we are and what we do. The project was undertaken inhouse, led by our incomparable Creative Director Ilana Greenberg. We had vital technical help from Hoff Communications. If you like what you see at gdusa.com, be grateful that I was involved, tangentially. WELCOME TO THE INHOUSE ANNUAL This edition of GDUSA features a showcase of winners of our American Inhouse Design Awards, the original and premier competition for inhouse design departments. With nearly six thousand entries, winners represent every size and segment of the private, public and non-profit sectors. Receiving an American Inhouse Design Award is a triumph on many levels: a feat of talent, effort and intelligence; a pointed reminder to management that inhouse designers are uniquely situated to express the essence of an organization and advance its mission; and a declaration that the best inhouse work is the stuff of design annuals. Over the years, many of you have told us that our Awards program contributes to the good fight to secure recognition and resources. That makes me feel warm and fuzzy, sort of like a single-malt scotch or a Yankee win. But it is absolute and total nonsense. You are the heroes of a story that unfolds every day rather than once a year. CHALLENGES AND OBSTACLES I do not use the term “hero” lightly. According to The Creative Group’s “Creative Team of The Future” survey — conducted in partnership with AIGA and previewed in this edition of GDUSA — here are just a few of today’s challenges and obstacles: inhouse designers are under increasing pressure to keep up with rising workloads; to play a more strategic role in their companies; to wear multiple hats and develop more skills across multiple media; and to master the art of collaboration and communication. All while grappling with scarce resources, lean staffs, deadline pressure, and other departments whose members may not be the brightest crayons in the box. ONE CHAIR AT A TIME Despite the challenges and obstacles, the status of inhouse design is clearly trending upward. Until fairly recently, inhouse designers were underserved and undervalued. Attitudes are changing. Design is better understood and respected as an asset, inhouse positions are more attractive, the light shines on inhouse accomplishments, and inhouse designers are winning a seat at the table one ergonomic chair at a time. In the “Creative Team of The Future” report, you will find upbeat assessments from the likes of Ashleigh Axios, digital creative director at The White House, Mariana Bukvic, design director at Nike+, and information designer Carlos Estrada of Herman Miller. Their collective message: “It’s an exciting time to be part of the inhouse creative industry. Those who make a commitment to breaking down barriers, taking on different responsibilities and learning new skills will be prepared to succeed.”

FRESH | IHOP LOGO TURNS FROWN UPSIDE DOWN

NEW YORK NY A new logo by Studio Tilt for IHOP has a cleaner,

more modern look, with a happy smile that evokes an emoticon. It is the latest move in an ongoing refresh of the nearly 60 year old brand. The new logo turns the O and P into a smiley face and drops the blue and red that once framed the type. “Our guests have told us for many years that coming to IHOP, and in many cases just thinking about our world famous pancakes, makes them smile,” states marketing vice president Kirk Thompson. “We believe this new logo captures the essence of the IHOP experience, which consistently delivers our guests not only craveable food, but also great memories shared with family and friends.” The logo is being rolled out on the chain’s website, merchandise and menus. In addition to Studio Tilt, creative credits for the new identity program go to: Blacktop of Kansas City for Menu Design; MRM/McCann New York for Digital/Social/Mobile; and Dailey & Associates for Advertising/TV Animation. www.studiotiltkc.com

FRESH | PAULA SCHER CO-STARS WITH SHAKESPEARE

NEW YORK NY Paula Scher’s iconic Public Theater identity goes to pieces in the

campaign for this year’s Shakespeare in the Park, the annual free performances presented by The Public Theater at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. This summer’s program pairs “The Tempest”, Shakespeare’s stormy classic about the magic of storytelling, with the fairy-tale romance “Cymbeline.” Playing off the word “free,” this year’s design is handmade and exists as lines of sliced typography that are cut through photography or large-scale words. The tempest of type creates a mini-identity that both updates and functions within the familiar Public Theater brand. The Shakespeare posters are designed by Scher and her team at Pentagram (this year by Scher and designer Jeff Close), and then extended and elaborated into a full system of season graphics by Kirstin Huber, the Public’s art director, and her inhouse team of designers, Tammy Shell (graphic designer and photographer) and Kameron Neal (junior graphic designer). www.pentagram.com

FRESH | SOUTHERN COMFORT FEELING COMFORTABLE

AUSTIN TX Southern Comfort liquor is rolling out a global branding and packaging campaign created by Austin TX creative agency Helms Workshop. The two-year effort has seen the company, led by founder Christian Helms, develop the rebrand around the idea of the spirit being a “category of one” instead of trying to fit into the marketplace alongside the whiskey brands it had competed with over the years. “The goal was getting across the idea that Southern Comfort is different from everyone else,” says Helms. “Through the years the brand had chased a lot of trends and with this campaign they were ready to be who they were ... That spirit of authenticity is universal, and won’t fade with momentary trends.” Among the changes are a new bottle shape, but one that retained the fluted shoulders that have been part of the brand. Of the work, Helms says: “The result is a new package that feels confident and comfortable in its own skin, and looks great on the shelf.” Adds Lena DerOhannessian, Southern Comfort Global Marketing Director: “The new packaging and visual identity lets drinkers know Southern Comfort is truly the ‘Flavor of Whiskey Made Comfortable’ and unlike any other brand on the market.” helmsworkshop.com

FRESH | DESIGNSTUDIO DRESSES LOGITECH IN BRIGHT COLORS

LONDON UK AND SAN FRANCISCO CA Logitech, known to the creative community as a leading producer of computer mice in the early years of the desktop revolution, has introduced a colorful, energetic and flexible identity meant to reflect the company’s new focus on smartphone and tablet accessories and, consequently, a younger demographic. DesignStudio, founded in 2009 by designers Ben Wright and Paul Stafford, selected lively, saturated, even neon colors to express the attitude. According to the design firm: “Our inspiration for color came from the clothing people wear today — brighter, more vibrant — with a variety of colors too, rather than a reliance on the old approach of ‘one color equals the brand’.” In addition, DesignStudio developed a new logotype based on simple geometric shapes, making for a clearer and cleaner visual element, and a new brand — Logi — for the mobile peripherals product family. “The word tech on products in the future will be irrelevant, in the future every brand from tires to jeans will have some kind of technology in it,” explains CEO Bracken Darrell. That said, the original Logitech name will continue to denote the computer accessories line. Logitech chief design officer Alastair Curtis adds: “Logitech has undergone huge changes, so we’ve created an identity that is an expression of who we are today and who we will be moving forward. A company transformation of this magnitude should come with an equally bold transformation of its brand ... Design is at the heart of everything we do ... Now our brand truly reflects the ambition of the company.” www.wearedesignstudio.com/works/logitech-brand

FRESH | KFC REDEPLOYS THE COLONEL

LOUISVILLE KY He's baaaaack! After a 21-year break,

KFC has brought back Colonel Sanders, its founder and brand mascot, to celebrate 75 years since the fast-food chain's secret fried chicken recipe was created. The agency behind the resurrection is Wieden + Kennedy, and The Colonel is played by actor, comedian, and former Saturday Night Live regular Daryl Hammond. Hammond says that “KFC is paying me in chicken.” The brand refresh also includes new packaging, new menu items, a new KFC.com, a “reinvented” Colonel Sanders website (which gives the history of the Colonel) and an updated restaurant design rolling out nationwide during the remainder of 2015. KFC has continued to grow, having dropped the overt reference to “fried” in its name while adding healthier food options. But it is now said to be faced with a “flock” of competitors with such as Chick-fil-A, Popeyes and even the Chipotle option. www.kfc.com

NEW YORK NY Carbone Smolan Agency often handles large scale complex projects, but sometimes the small scale ones

provide an opportunity to make a big impact. PSP (Progressive Supranuclear Palsy) is a brain disease that strikes 50 and 60 year-olds during the prime of their lives. Research into PSP gives hope to patients, their families and caregivers, while providing an ideal gateway to understanding the causes of more well-known neurodegenerative diseases, such as ALS, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. Color graphic illustrations and brochure design by CSA tell the story of the disease and emphasize the need to support research. carbonesmolan.com

FRESH | STRIDE RITE STANDS ON DUNCAN/CHANNON PLATFORM

SAN FRANCISCO Duncan/Channon has helped century-old

children’s shoe maker Stride Rite reposition its brand and refresh its identity system, and launch an ambitious advertising campaign. The effort stands on a new “Built for Childhood” brand platform that seeks to connect with millennial parents and to reintroduce a brand that has been around since 1919. The platform was inspired by the everyday experiences of parents, encouraging them to embrace the chaos and come prepared. The integrated campaign — which includes new brand photography produced in collaboration with Cynthia Perez — crosses multiple channels, including digital, video, print, online, mobile and social advertising, with the strategy of breaking through the back to school clutter by reaching Mom during her time and starting a peer-to-peer conversation. “We’re thrilled to have been chosen to reintroduce a brand that has been a category leader for nearly a century,” comments Michael Lemme, chief creative officer and partner at Duncan/ Channon. Clients of the Bay Area agency include StubHub, Sephora, Kona Brewing, Red Hook, John Muir Health and the California Tobacco Control Program. www.duncanchannon.com

FRESH | PEPSICO COMMEMORATIVE BOOK LOOKS TO FUTURE

NEW YORK NY Think Studio collaborated with Melcher Media

to create 50 Years of Pep: A Storied Past, A Promising Future, a 230-page large-format book chronicling PepsiCo’s history. The corporation was formed in 1965 when Pepsi-Cola merged with Frito-Lay to form a complementary beverage and snack business. Creative Director John Clifford explains that “with so many iconic brands, it was a design challenge to give the book a cohesive look and feel. Rather than a retro look, we created a clean, modern design that looks to the future, with bright colors, large pull quotes, infographics, and bold typography.” Archival photos, vintage advertising, leadership profiles, business tips, and iconic marketing campaigns help tell the story of the brands — including Tropicana, Quaker Oats, Doritos, Naked Juice, Lipton, Sabra Hummus, Gatorade, and Aquafina— and their part in popular culture. Additional Think Studio credits go to Tim Littleton, Designer; David Brown, Editor, Andrew Postman, Writer; and Susan Lynch, Production Manager. Creative Director Clifford is author of the recent book, Graphic Icons: Visionaries Who Shaped Modern Graphic Design. thinkstudionyc.com

FRESH | WORKING FOR PEANUTS WORKS FOR BBDO

MINNEAPOLIS MN BBDO Minneapolis has created the Skippy Yippee! experience — aided by Click 3X and ClickFire

Media — a broadcast and interactive campaign encouraging users to spread joyful ‘yippee!’ moments across the digital universe. In a nutshell, the goal was to communicate fun and variety, and the latest element is an online art gallery with peanut butter as the canvas. The campaign began with national television spots demonstrating the peanut selection process — that only the fun peanuts make it into a jar of Skippy Peanut Butter — using custom illustration, animation, and integration with live action footage to bring 3D peanut characters to life. As part of a two-phase program to support the campaign, a Skippy Yippee! interactive experience was implemented across the peanutbutter.com website, rich media ad units and iADs to ensure a happy experience across all digital devices and platforms. A team of interactive animators and producers created over 50 unique GIFs that were launched at the click of a “Fun Button.” A tracking counter allowed users to see how many “Yippee!” moments were being spread in real time; the total number ultimately exceeded 14 million. Phase two, launched in late spring and alive now, is Skippy Art, a virtual drawing tool that challenges people to create the ultimate peanut butter masterpiece for the online gallery. To mimic the real-life gooey effect of drawing in peanut butter, the designers combined texture, color, depth and stroke angles to come up with the ultimate virtual peanut butter drawing experience. www.peanutbutter.com/yippee/skippyart

PEOPLE | CALARTS HONORS PIONEERING WOMAN

SHEILA LEVRANT DE BRETTEVILLE HONORARY DOCTORATE, CALIFORNIA INSTITUTE OF THE ARTS, VALENCIA CA

Graphic designer, public artist and educator Sheila Levrant de Bretteville has been granted an honorary doctorate degree from CalArts. Exemplifying the Institute’s mission to explore new paths beyond conventional boundaries, de Bretteville was recognized for making extraordinary contributions to American culture. The degree was awarded by President Steven A. Lavine. As CalArts faculty in the early 1970s, de Bretteville co-founded the Institute’s pioneering Women’s Design Program and has continued to champion feminist principles and the social good. “From the start,” she says, “the direct expression of a plurality of voices within a community has informed my choice of materials that have the capacity to carry the immediacy and content of conversations.” In the early 1970s, de Bretteville devised a graphic and informational campaign introducing the Institute and its core values to the world — and put feminist ideals into action with the first design program for women. As a public artist, she has created deeply researched public art works within many cities; in 1981, she initiated the Communication Design Program at Otis Art Institute of the Parsons School of Design; and she joined the Yale School of Art faculty as its first tenured woman and has directed the Graduate Program in Graphic Design since 1990. Today, she is the Caroline M. Street Professor of Graphic Design at the New Haven institution. De Bretteville was awarded the AIGA medal in 2004. sheilastudio.us

WHY DESIGNERS CHOOSE PRINT, REASON #15 PRINT IS UNIQUE Based On An Interview With Sabine Lenz BY GERRY BONETTO

“Print has always been my first love,” states designer Sabine Lenz, Founder of PaperSpecs and Editor-in-Chief of Storyboard. “Because there’s nothing that can substitute for print.”

PRINT STANDS OUT With so much moving online, print presents even more opportunities. “If you print something amazing,” Lenz points out, “you stand out even more than you ever had before. It has to be part of your marketing! And if you have some good paper,

conference a few months after the story had run, the woman’s response was a great example of the credibility that print enjoys. “I told my kids,” she said to Lenz, “look how important your mother is. I’m in print!” “She also mentioned that she left the magazine on her coffee table for days,” recalls Lenz. “And this is somebody who works in the digital realm for a living! All of a sudden she was in print and it made it so much more real, so much more important. Print is unique, and it’s alive and well.”

/ 2015 VISUAL TRENDS Trend. Trending. On-trend. All you really want to know is: what’s hot right now? Whether it’s fashion, architecture or even how we communicate (hello, emoji!), knowing what’s hot—or what’s going to be— is a huge part of creating compelling content that people notice, remember and, ultimately, share.

Read on for a heads up on the future of visuals—a taste of the trends we’ve identified as the ones that will underpin and inspire the best creative you’ll see in the next two to five years.

Creation & Collaboration In contrast to everyone’s increased amount of daily screen time—or maybe because of it—the renewed interest in a DIY aesthetic shows no signs of slowing. As people build careers out of hobbies and smaller-scale entrepreneurs cash in on their creations, artisanal craftsmanship and a handcrafted vibe add a more analog attitude to imagery. A soaring creative class, coupled with a new generation in the workforce, signals a shift in the way leading companies do business. A culture of creativity and innovation is leading the way, with collaboration valued over competition and knowledge shared for mutual benefit.

Spectacle Living in such a connected world, it’s not surprising that people would rather spend on an incredible experience instead of something materialistic. They want to immerse themselves in unique excursions—to travel beyond the expected and discover something extraordinary—and be inspired by what they see. Adventure travel is one of the fastest-growing travel segments worldwide. Urban exploration is also on the rise, as people scour cities in search of distinctive buildings and structures that are just as fascinating as natural landscapes. Less-traditional sports are gaining attention, too, as people seek out new and exciting ways to stay fit.

Storytelling Evocative images have become instrumental in breaking through digital clutter and the warmth of the human experience stands out more than ever. People are drawn to rich, layered visuals with an authentic narrative they can quickly understand and relate to, often with a detailed view or unique perspective on life.

In their never-ending quest for the most zeitgeist-worthy imagery, the Corbis creative research team pores over thousands of pieces of visual content from around the world and distills it all down to bite-size bits of information that will help you find the perfect visuals for whatever project you’re working on. Want to know what other visual trends we think will be huge? Find more at blog.corbis.com.

Creative Teams of the Future Will Break Down Silos As in-house creative teams continue to evolve from service providers to strategic partners, the ability to collaborate with other departments is increasingly important. During the next 12 months, many in-house designers we surveyed said

While closer collaboration is likely to raise creative teams’ visibility, earn them additional respect and lead to better results for the business, working with other departments — especially at first — may pose challenges. Research from The Creative Group and Robert Half Technology shows common obstacles to collaboration between creative and IT colleagues include making time to meet, communicating clearly in meetings, managing competing priorities, keeping projects on track and getting people to follow up.

Similar problems will likely arise when in-house designers interact with employees in other departments within their company. Creative professionals of the future will need to overcome these issues to break down silos and further position themselves as true strategic business partners. Ashleigh Axios, digital creative director at the White House, says she teams up with many other departments within the White House and federal agencies outside those walls. Recently, she’s taken the initiative to improve collaboration by scheduling ongoing, in-person meetings with these groups to build rapport and educate them about how her busy three-person creative team works. For example, Axios might host a brown

Creative Teams of the Future Will Be Well-Rounded Even as the economy improves and hiring heats up, creative teams remain relatively lean. Fifty-five percent of in-house designers we surveyed said they work on teams with five or fewer employees; another 26 percent belong to teams of six to 10 people. While creative teams are garnering more respect, it seems companies are still acting conservatively when adding staff.
