“ Ya Gotta know where to Go….The FUN Starts Here….”

where did it go??? Christmas music is in the air ( has been since Halloween and that aint right…too early) and the temps are lower these days…even in California!! Must mean Santa is tuning up the sleigh and filling it with some 110 octane, and you thought it was reindeer motorvating the big red ride. 2011 is fast drawing to a close. Seems like each passing year is moving closer to warp speed 10 Scotty!! Slow it down a little paleeezzzeee!!!! Throttle back…lift your foot off the go pedal...apply brakes just a little. Is it just me or do all of you feel it too, this speed thing where time just vaporizes. The next thing you know its time to leave your favorite show or cruise nite and you just go there. I swear I was just at the Nashville Auto Fest event yesterday. BAM I am at GOODGUYS Nashville. Next thing I am enjoying the Redneck Rumble and then it’s the annual Midnight Rodders Fall Color Cruise coming by with over 120 cool rides for me to see cruising some of the most scenic roads around. A lot of other fun stuff happens in between all this, but it seems like you can never get enough, cause time is passing by so fast. I haven't checked off anything on the bucket list this year and that’s not good. The list gets longer and the time gets shorter…definitely not fair. Point being, make every day count. I know I am…everyday and every hour.

As the year closes so ends Volume 11 of the GEARHEAD GAZZETTE. It was a big year for the GG. We turned the newsletter into and on-line magazine or e-zine as they are called. We tripled the number of pages of GEARHEAD fun we are able to bring you. We had a few growing pains with this new format but we have worked thru those and I would like to believe that it will be smooth cruising in 2012 for the GG. I appreciate all of your feedback. It helps me make this a better publication for all of you. Keep the feedback and comments coming please. Let me say thank you to all of you for reading the GEARHEAD GAZZETTE. As I have already wrote about, time is a precious commodity these days, so you taking time out of your day to read the GAZZETTE means a lot. Thank you to our advertisers also. I would ask that you take a look at them the next time you need something for your ride or GEARHEAD life style. They are all great folks. Finally, let me wish you a very MERRY CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY and prosperous NEW YEAR. Please keep all our military members in your thoughts and prayers as they stand guard for our freedoms. Finally please remember the real reason for the season. There’s a birthday party on the 25th and your invited.

ROAD RUMBLINGS… By Jimmy B

OOP’s!!! We have to make a correction for

last months issue. We erroneously listed the cover shot as having been done by Wolf Motorsports magazine. WRONG!!!!! Credit goes to Jimmy Lowe for that great cover shot. Sorry about that. We want to give a shout out to the MURFREESBORO HOT ROD CLUB. They host an AWESOME Cruise nite each year and collect donations from the attendees, to provide help to those in need in the community. Recently they presented $500.00 worth of WAL-MART GIFT Cards to Journeys Home in Murfreesboro TN. GREAT JOB MHRC!!!!

HAVE YOU SENT The GEARHEAD GAZZETTE YOUR CAR SHOW OR CRUISE NITE INFO FOR 2012 YET?? If not, do it today!! Take a look at the “SHOW INFO AT A GLANCE” section and you will see that the show / cruise season is going to be a good one in 2012. There are already over 50 events listed!!!! Send your info to gearheadgazzette@gmail.com Here is STREET RODDER Magazines Street Rod of the Year!! Owned by Dan Bredbury of Durham CT. 1932 Ford Hi-Boy coupe, with a 348 sporting 6 deuces on top. Its got a Jag Rr end out back with 3 pedals working a Tremac 5-spd trans. Very Cool!!

Congratulations to GM & Chevrolet on reaching 100 years of great cars & trucks. Not many brands or automobile manufacturer’s can say that!! Here’s some interesting history and facts on the Chevy story….  Chevrolet Motor Car Co. was incorporated on November 3, 1911  The Chevy bow Tie Emblem was applied to a Chevrolet in 1914 by Billy Durant CEO of Chevrolet at the time. As Durant told it, he’d seen the design on the wallpaper of a hotel room in Paris.  1912 Chevrolet had a 120 inch wheelbase and a 299c.i. six cylinder engine in it.  First Chevy truck appeared in 1918  1927 Chevy outsells Ford  1932 1of 3 cars sold is a Chevy.  The SUBURBAN is the longest running nameplate in the auto industry. It was launched in 1935.  Chevy offered the first low priced car with an automatic transmission, the 2 spd Powerglide unit in 1950 at a cost of $159.00  ―SEE THE U-S-A in your Chevrolet‖ sung by TV’s Dinah Shore starting in 1951.  More than 1 million IMPALA’s were sold in 1965, still a record for production of a single nameplate.  The Chevy ―SS‖ Super Sport designation first appeared in 1961 as a special option on the Impala.

And remember to tell em’ ya saw it in the GEARHEAD GAZZETTE cause THE FUN STARTS HERE!!

Makes a Great Christmas Present!!!

Every January, one of the BEST car shows is held in Southern Calif at the Pomona Fairplex. A show steeped in history. To win here is the highlight of professional builders and all those “little guys” doing it in their home garage. As the time gets close for the 2012 edition of this show, we thought we’d show you just a very small sample of the 2011 show. This year is the 80th anniversary of the 32 Ford and a special display and area will be set up celebrating this storied car / model. Add in the pre-show activities at many pro builders shops and this one is one not to be missed. Here is the 2011 Winner of the title AMERICA’s MOST BEAUTIFUL ROADSTER. This black beauty was built at Squeeg’s Kustoms in Arizona

Meet Elmer Jones of Clarksville TN. He is the

winner!!! Elmer and his 1949 Mercury logged 9423.2 miles of fun and smiles this year, during the contest period!! Elmer loves driving his Merc so much, that he and his wife took it on vacation to Washington State this year. To say that Elmer likes to cruise, is an understatement!! When I tried to set up a time to meet him and present the award to him, he was out of town at the Emerald Coast Cruze in in Panama City beach FL!!! Elmer built his Merc to be a road cruiser from the start. He took the car down to the bare metal and went from there. After he finished all the metal work and modifications to the body, he had Ronnie Jones Body Shop in Carlisle TN shoot the Hot Rod Black all over. Jeremy ―Darren the Killer‖ broom added some traditional style stripping outside and inside to give it that perfect look. Elmer slide a 5.3 Chevy LS motor and 4L60E trans combo from a 2020 Silverado between the frame rails.

12

After Elmer did some measuring, he put a Ford Explorer rear end under the Merc. The Explorer rear end is only a ¼‖ different from the stock rear end. Up front he installed a Nova front sub frame to get the Merc to sit just right. He added 4 wheel disc brakes and covered them up with 15 x7 & 15 x 8 Wire Wheels with Firestone skins on them. December 2011

EJ then turned his attention to the inside of the Merc, to make sure it was comfortable & cool for all those miles he was ready to drive it. He called on Tony Tucker to put in the black & white vinyl and carpet in. Elmer added a ―period correct‖ Vintage Air A/C unit from A-Plus Hot Rod Supply under the dash to lower the Tennessee heat & Humidity to a comfortable level while cruising. Add in some Rat Fink floor mats, a Rat Fink shift knob on the Lokar Shifter and a 50’s style shrunken skull on the mirror and it’s almost 1959 all over again. This is what it’s all about Gearheads!! Take your favorite vehicle, build it and finish it like you want it. Then you hop in and go cruising with it…anywhere you want to go. If you’d like to see more of Elmer’s Merc, he invites everyone to come to Clarksville TN, and take part in the Memory Lane Car Club cruise nite every Friday nite during the summer. If you don’t catch Elmer there, watch for him on the road…..I know you’ll see him there.

HOT RODDING IN THE MID-SOUTH High School, NASCAR in Memphis Area & Submarine Races….

Words & Picture’s by Ed Woodard

Editors Note: Here is another chapter in the hot rod history of the Mid-South as told by our very own historians and all around great guy…Ed Woodard. Ed is on the move this month and the hot rod foundation is starting to be built for Ed. Now lets head back west to Memphis with Ed…..

HOW DID HOTRODDING START FOR ME & MY GENERATION…. Seems like the more I think about those high school years just adds to more memories… …..Leaving your high school after 2 years of looking forward to being a senior was really tough but my parents took their possible rebellious kid out of the picture & moved while I was in Gulfport MS, with the Tennessee Air National Guard. One call did it all, ―Eddie we have moved to Nashville‖. That was it! New town, new school, new friends & lots of old hometown Memphis memories Sort of amazing too, as one of my fellow guardsmen ended up being my employer, Joe Lunati. Must not forget that chopped ’34 Ford had its times in the family like the time I needed to get the car inspected. I tried to take it through but they turned it down. It seems as the lights were to low being mounted on the frame horns. When I got home my mom ask if everything went alright. Of course I said it didn’t pass so without hesitation she said come on & picked up her coat & we were gone. About a block from the inspection station she just stopped & said get out she would be back in a few minutes. What was she up to??? Well in about 20 minutes or so she came whizzing around the corner with the sticker affixed to the windshield. I ask her how??? She said she use to date the supervisor when she was swimming! …Did I tell you that my mom and my aunt Dot had both been Mississippi River 5 mile marathon swimmers as well as a 15 mile swimmers in the Gulf of Mexico. & my mom even had a pilot’s license to fly and was a Senior Life Saving Instructor. She was something else! Still have those silver trophies she won…what memories !!! Many tales can be told about that ’34 Ford. After working at Rainbow skating rink & swimming pool I saved up to by a 1951 MG 14 December 2011

TD about the time we moved to Nashville. My mom & I also pooled our funds & bought a new 1954 Buick Convertible, which I wished I had back.

The picture of the ’51 MG is with my girlfriend Barbara behind the wheel at Memphis Riverside Park waiting for the submarine races to start(Old Memphis Past time)..

HOT RODDING IN THE MID-SOUTH cont. It is worth mentioning that in 1955 before, our move to Nashville, I came down with a case of infectious mononucleosis, which they thought was leukemia for a week or so. That is until Dr Kraus pointed out that if my blood count was as bad as was it showed I would not be alive. I was the first recorded case of ―Mono‖(The kissing disease) in Tennessee & I had been doing a little of that in the 1954 Buick Convertible….Bobby Applebaum & Hooker Hood were the first to come check on me while I was laid up, that helped with recovery.…… You remember last month when I was telling you about that NASCAR Super Speedway in the Memphis area. Yep, it’s true & long before Daytona or Atlanta. It was about 1953 when they built it at Lehi AR, which is some 10 miles or so west of West Memphis AR. The track can easily be seen by satellite today with the ½ mile straights and ¼ mile turns.

I have some video of one of the big NASCAR races on that track, You should hear Hooker tell about his experiences running that track. The big time street rodder who lives just about next door to the remnants of the track is Vernon Walker who is the headman at NSRA. If you look closely on the satellite you can see the restored 1960’s Texaco service station in his back yard. Few know Vernon is a master restorer of neon auto & tractor signs as well as the owner of Walker radiators. A few years ago I was fortunate to be invited to a Memphis Street Rod Assn meeting at Vernon’s. That Texaco station is fully operational just as it was in the early 60’s. After that, I have said why collect anything as Vernon has it all, what a night to remember!!! I am about to submit this to the Gearhead Gazette but I must insert a little thought that came to mind as I drove down to Memphis on Thursday 11/17/2011 for the Annual Hotrod Reunion dinner honoring Joe Lunati. As I crossed the Tennessee River I thought how nice it was that I didn’t have to present my passport as I entered West Tennessee. It has always seemed as a distant country when it came to participating in events down there. We have a lot of auto activities in Middle Tennessee as does West Tennessee. We need to remind each other of all these events, even better participate in them, after all we are not separate countries…are we??? December 2011

Every year for the past 14 years, in the beginning of July, in central Ohio, a few thousand friends get together for a little (BIG BIG) show called the GOODGUY PPG Nationals. The 2011 edition is in the books and based on all the talk and feedback, another outstanding event took place. Its hard to showcase, let alone see over 6000 “too cool” rides. Here’s a few from that little show in central Ohio. Make your plans now to attend the 15th edition of this great show in 2012.

The “Snake” is coming together!! As we reported earlier this year, Mark & Rhonda Delk are putting together a Shelby Cobra. A lot of work is done already as its in the paint shop now getting ready for some color and stripes on it. This one is going to “get with the program” with some serious motor action and all the other goodies to make it handle and run like a Cobra should. Stay tuned as we continue to follow this one come together.

IT’S TREE-RIFFIC!!!!! “WOOD IS GOOD”!!! Congrats go out to Marty Crain. His “used-2-b” “leaky-tiki” is right and tight and looking good. Looking so good that the WOODIE TIMES magazine put his “termite delight” on the front cover of this month issue. Marty has logged some serious miles and smiles in 2011 in this cool ride of his. “BITCHIN”

The 2011 version of the BIGGEST car show is in the record books now. Just about 11000 cool cars, trucks and more came out and had a blast in LOO-VILLE Ky this year. This is the 2nd year of the 30yr cutoff and it seems to be working just fine. The mix of pre and post 48 hot rods & cars is addition to this event. Add in what seems like every vendor you could imagine and you could have literally built a new car during the weekend. Over in this corner was the swap meet, the other corner had the PRO’s PICK area (tough judging for sure). Inside was the Builders Showcase with cars you usually only see in magazines. The 4 days pass by fast and before you know it, you’re hitting the road for home. While you are driving to the house though you are planning for next year, so you can see the things you missed this year. Check www.nsra-usa.com for all the details on the 2012 edition of the BIGGEST Show for all hot rodders. We’ll see you there….

FOR SALE: This is being passed on from David Ferguson of the HENDERSONVILLE CRUISE IN who got it from Tom Tucker of Hendersonville. Tom knows a guy who has a 1965 Corvette Convertible 4-speed that is a driver, upgrade-as-you-go or restoration project which is located in Danvers, Mass. He bought it from a man that had it in his garage since 1980. It has a 327/300HP, all numbers matching car, right down to the original carburetor, which he just replaced to get it running (he kept all the parts that he replaced). Car runs great and he just put new calipers all around. His idea is to sell it as a running, driving project car. He wants to get $25,000 for the car if he can. If you know of anybody interested who attends the cruise-in, this might be a deal to get an original numbers matching Sting Ray. He has not advertised it yet as he is still cleaning it up. It has had just a little body work done to it through the years but it presents really well if somebody wants to drive it as is. To communicate with the owner (Tom Manetta), it is best to use email. Mr. Manetta’s email is: tom@legendarymotorsllc.com (10/11)

Finish Line…. POPPIN’ the Chute!!!! It’s the end of the year, kind of like the end of the race. More to come, but for now it’s done. What better to close out this issue then to showcase some classic drag racing and shots of “hangin’ out da laundry” or “poppin’ the chute.” Get your chute re-packed for 2012, cause its going be action packed!!

Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely, in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting "...Holy Crap... what a ride!!!"

There have been countless studies done to prove it, but virtually everyone knows that spending quality time with a kid is the greatest gift you can give them. And sharing your appreciation for collector cars is a great way to nurture their interest in a hobby that you can enjoy together for many years to come.
