“ Ya Gotta know where to Go….The FUN Starts Here….”
“if we had to do the work needed to host the cruise” Greetings Gearheads, We’ll here we are in late fall, in the good old USA. Old man winter is getting ready to open the door and literally blow into town. For some of you in the Northern Climes, that is not news you want to hear. Being it’s late fall and approaching Christmas, let’s talk about cruising and cruise-in’s. Elsewhere in this issue, we have a feature on cruisein’s and car cruising in general. Not to double up on that, what I want to do here, is to say thank you. Thank you, to all of the people who put together and manage cruise nights across the USA. There is a level of work that has 4
to be done to make them happen, especially if you are doing it every week! Dedication is the description that’s comes to my mind. While we all like to cruise, let’s admit it, if we had to do the work needed to host the cruise, there wouldn’t be a cruise. So I will say it again, THANK YOU to all the CRUISEIN hosts and organizers. Thank you for your dedication, which let’s all of us gearheads, enjoy ourselves, and even let’s us get back a piece of what we used to experience when we were younger...and had less grey hairs. “the fun starts here”….
Thanks to “Land Speed” Louise Noeth for sending us this info and video to share with all of you. Are you on FACEBOOK yet? If you are we want to invite you to check out our FB page.

Talking about Facebook elsewhere in this issue of ROAD RUMBLING’s, here are a couple of FB pages you may want to check out.
First up is the 75th Anniversary of the ‘40 Ford page. They are celebrating the iconic 1940 Ford in all body styles, from original to way out customs. They post a new picture of a different ‘40 Ford EVERYDAY!
The other page you may want to check out
is the FRONT END FRIDAY page. They run a contest each week, that the FB users get to vote on and the winner for that week gets a cool prize. Each week is different as different Front End Shots are posted by FB users for everyone to check out and vote for. Head over to their page and have some fun like we do! 6
Bowling Green is revving up for a special addition to one of its longest-running annual events. Beginning next year for its 35th show, the city's native car show will officially be known as Corvette Homecoming & Chevy Invitational, Inc. Coming to Sloan Convention Center July 14-16, 2016, the new and improved Corvette Homecoming & Chevy Invitational will be open to all makes and models of Corvettes & Chevrolet's and Bowling Green native Joe Pruitt, the event organizer, believes adding a new broad component will attract more participants. "We want to bring more life into the show-while we love our Corvettes and celebrating their heritage in Bowling Green, we also believe Chevrolet owners are interested in bringing their show cars to our city," Pruitt said. "Adding this component reminds people that you don't have to own a Corvette to be an enthusiast and celebrate the iconic sports car." The Corvette Homecoming & Chevy Invitational will feature vendors, special educational seminars and a road tour of Kentucky. A dinner and dance will be held Saturday evening for registered participants to end the show at Sloan Convention Center. Spectators will be able to visit the car show in the parking lot and inside the convention center. While in town, visitors will be invited to check out the new Corvette Cave-In exhibit at the National Corvette Museum, which is tentatively scheduled to open in the first quarter of 2016. Keep up with the full schedule and updates for the Corvette Homecoming & Chevy Invitational by visiting www.corvettehomecoming.com
IN SCALE We’ve all seen those small scale actual running model engines, either in person or in magazine article’s or other places. They have actual casting machined down to make them work.
Well you have to have machinery to make those parts right? Check out this cool Bridgeport Mill we saw on FACEBOOK recently. Talk about craftsmanship...WOW! Want to see more ( We Did) then head over to http:// www.craftsmanshipmuseum.com/jordan.htm
Thanks to our friend “Big” Al Liebmann for sending this “Official Conversion Chart” to us. How many times have all of us experienced one of these conditions while hunting a project!
We have lost a number of hot rod hero’s and legends over the last few years. We lost one of the Pioneering Hot Rod & Custom Hero’s though with the passing of George Barris..RIP 7

For 24yrs, the NASHVILLE AUTOFEST has been a welcome mid-winter relief for gearheads in the Middle Tennessee and Mid-South region of the USA. If you live where old man winter cuts your drive time in your cool ride, you get “garage fever”. You know what we’re talking about. You just need to get out of the shop or man cave and go see some hot rods and cool cars!
The 2015 edition of the NASHVILLE AUTOFEST did not disappoint, in giving some much needed relief from that “garage fever” condition. Hot Rods, cool cars and customs, swap meet, vendors and the car corral too, were all on display for all the gearheads that came out over the 3rd weekend in January.
8
The NASHVILLE AUTOFEST will be celebrating it’s 25th Anniversary in 2016. The show will be taking place at the Tennessee State Fairgrounds on Jan 16-17. You’ll be able to take care of your “garage fever” by making plans to check out the show. One word of warning though….you’re going to get a case of “hot rod fever” when you’re there. Good thing they will have parts for you to cure that fever!

Editors Note: As we told you last issue, we will be re-running this series of stories from Ed Woodard, as our tribute to him, and because they’re just plain cool. I hope you enjoy them again as we do.
HOW DID HOT RODDING START FOR ME & MY GENERATION… HOW DID HOT RODDING START FOR ME & MY GENERATION…. Have you ever wondered how all this street rod, custom car, drag race, & round track deal ever started? Where did it start? How in the world did everybody find out when & where to get together? Hopefully in the next few months I will try to answer some of those questions for all of us. Many hot rodders made their careers as fighter pilots in the 50’s & 60’s to satisfy their need for speed. That was my goal too, but it never worked out that way….I guess mine was to be the performance business….Which was really not that bad….
pretty good but he built it a little loose as it used about as much oil as gas.
next picture a couple of English bikes go for it….
That old Jimmy did get me to my first drag race at Carlisle AR deserted airfield, that was about 1952. Seems drag strips & deserted airfields sort of went together. Several come to mind, Courtland AL, Halls TN, Sturgis KY. Back then there were numerous ¼ round track race tracks in the Memphis area. My old friend Hooker Hood use to pull that 9HB race car to a track every night but Sunday., all within 125 miles from Memphis. He had to win, or at least not tear the car up, cause he towed the car.
Well……..here ‘tis……….This is that first drag race mentioned at Carlisle AR….first picture checking out the secure crowd control with my buddy Jim Stevens lining up with a ’51 Ford
Sometimes I think about those early days in Memphis. I guess an old high school friend Jim Stevens (who was a career USAF pilot flying B47’s) started it all with me. Best I remember he had a early 50’s Chevrolet convertible with a 4x4 GMC inline 6 in it with 3 one barrel carbs. It ran 12
3rd pic is bike on the big end…check the layout,
No trailers back then and his OldsmoFord was the tow car….a ’49 Ford coupe with a Olds 88 engine, about 1952. It was a real honor to attend the HotRod Reunion in 2009 where Hooker was the honoree, including 3 of his restored race cars from the early days. Did you know the first NASCAR 1 ½ mile super speedway was in the Memphis area …sort of still is !!!!.....& it is right next door to one of the most famous street rodders!
4th pic bikes on the big end, I can see why they built an airfield here….check the flat land!
In Memphis there was the Memphis Rodders hot rod club that I always wanted to join but never seemed to get with them even though I knew most of them. Their rules for being a member was really tough even if you were lucky enough to be invited to Ray Gammons restaurant for their weekly meeting. Once told, there was a member kicked out because he went to a parents funeral….that is tough!
A big time Memphis Rodder was Ray Godman that owned the Tennessee Bo-Weevil driven by Red Dyer. It was runner up at the U.S.Nationals at Detroit, the year before it moved to Indy. Many of the Memphis Rodders are now the Memphis Street Rod Assn members…..Did I mention that I bought one of the historic “Memphis Rodders” plaques a couple of years ago…..at a swap meet….Didn’t have to join nuttin!!!! Hot rodding is in your blood….That is just the way it is….. I was going to Memphis Tech High & had a chopped 1934 Ford 5 window coupe with the quarter windows filled in to make a 3 window. It really was a sloppy job with body filler over the glass Did I mention Montgomery Auto Supply? My friend Johnny Sausermann, why had a slick ’51 Ford convertible, worked there & I sometimes would help out on Saturday. I remember we prepared several engine displays for the company display in the Memphis Rodders 1953 custom car show at the downtown Ellis auditorium.
next pic shows those bikes going after it one more time….but this might be the first bike wheely…check the bike on the right !!, 5th pic Sonny Belt beating a Buick. Sonny traded in a lowered 1950 white Mercury coupe with, red & white rolled & pleated interior, Offy heads & Offy 3x2 intake….for a new 1954 Olds 88…yuk!
13
next pic is a classic drag race, 2 Jaguars getting it on,
the last picture is my buddy Jim slapping it on that ’51 Ford & of course losing another quart of oil from that 302 GMC.
We hope you enjoyed this again! We will continue to do re-print’s of Ed’s articles in upcoming issue’s until we get thru them all.
Next pic are a pair of street rods having at it….hope they don’t break those keyed axles out there in no-mans-land
I guess that was it for me….as the car show was in my blood, but not in Memphis but later in Nashville as you will see later. That’s about the time my high school days seemed to end when my parents moved to Nashville when my father’s company transferred him. That always seemed to happen about every 2 years for us, but moving between my junior & senior years when going to Tech High was very hard to take…. That’s about the way it started for me … see ya next month…….. 14

Words & Pic’s—Jimmy B
All across America, and for that matter in a lot of other places around the world, gearheads take part in one of the oldest rituals of hot rodding virtual every week...CRUISING.
Today’s cruising does look different than it did back 15, 20 0r 30 years ago. Back then hot rodders actually drove their cars to a downtown or town square area, parked for a while, and then jumped back in and cruised around the “unofficial” cruise route. If you have grey in your hair, you definitely know what we are talking about.
In most towns, big or small, the cruise central point would be a “drive-In”. The drive-in was the hot spot where folks would stop, eat of course and just watch who drove thru...slowly.
The type of cruising we’re talking about, played out on the big screen in the hot rodding classic...AMERICAN GRAFITTI. Admit it, you have watched it at least once and we’re going to guess many more times, since you saw it at a theatre or at the Drive-In movies. If you HAVEN’T seen it, we suggest you do….TODAY! 24
Today’s cruise scene is more “car show” at night versus driving around an unofficial route in town. The only cruising that really happens these days, is the drive to or from the designated cruise spot. These days you can find cruise-in’s mostly being held in parking lots of “Big Box’ stores. Some towns actually host/hold a cruise in on some regular frequency. We will say that these towns are smart, as they are capitalizing on the power of the cruisein to drive $$$ into their town’s businesses. This is not a bad thing by any means.
These days, cruise-in’s have changed and evolved into something other “driving around”, “cruising the loop” or “cruising Main St”. Rising gas prices over the years, since the late ‘70’s, caused hot rodders to adapt and not go broke cruising around town.
There still at some cruise-in’s held at drivein’s, but our experience tells us that that is exception rather than the norm, and to us that’s sad. Nothing like a burger and chocolate shake, while checking out some cool rides at the cruise-in.
25
Calling Middle Tennessee our home, we are blessed to have a LOT OF cruise action to take in weekly. Some are held weekly, some are held monthly. It all works. Same can be said for many parts of the USA too.
They have been doing their early(6am) Saturday morning cruise since 1986. Saturday morning gives hot rodders another option to get a “car fix” but yet do some other non car related activities.
All the pictures you see in this feature were shot at various Middle Tennessee cruise-in’s. An off-shoot of the cruise scene, is the early morning cruise-in. We have more then one in Middle Tennessee, with the Franklin TN CARS & COFFEE Saturday morning cruise being the biggest. Takes place every Saturday morning, 52 Saturdays a year, weather permitting. The grand daddy of Saturday morning cruises though is the Huntington Beach CA based , DONUT DERELICTS Cruise.
26
However, whenever and wherever...go cruising...it’s nothing but 4 wheeled fun!

Car Clubs have an important place in hot rodding history as well as today too. Car Clubs usually have shirts or “car coats” with the club logo. Another classic club item is the Car Club Plaque. These are still a very popular item for car clubs to use to show their pride! The older plaques are BIG collector items also. A lot of gearheads hunt for them at swap meets and other sales. Here are a few we have seen over time.
