“ Ya Gotta know where to Go….The FUN Starts Here….”

“buy a Tee-Shirt or a decal or something like that,” Our hobby, industry is going to lose some companies….

mentioned may not be of any interest to you based on your favorite car and style of build, a company you have used or may want to use in the future may not be there.

Like you, I see the news, headlines and reports. Over 20 million people are out of work due the current Coronavirus situation in our country. BEFORE you start ranting, this is NOT about some political hack of either party or any certain news outlet either TV or print.

How can WE help? It’s easy...spend a few bucks with these companies. No I am not saying buy something from everyone, but rather instead of holding off on buying that part for a while, buy it now. It could be the difference in that companies future. I know and understand that everyone can’t spend a lot of money right now because of their personal financial situation, but there are a fair number of us who can. Even if you only buy a TeeShirt or a decal or something like that, every little bit helps. If we don’t have these companies, our favorite past time may not be as much fun or disappear. If you received or will receive some stimulus money from the FED, take a few bucks and support a “HOT ROD “ business. Now let me see what I am going to buy today….

What I am talking about is due to the current financial situation in the USA, we have companies in our sport / hobby who are close to having to hang out the OUT OF BUSINESS sign. In one case that I know of, due to a notification I received, ACCUAIR has closed permanently. Two issues ago we shared a piece in the ROAD RUMBLINGS section about OFFENHAUSER company being perilously close to having to hang it up. Think about that, one of our hobby’s founding aftermarket speed parts companies may not be around much longer. There are others too gearheads. How does this affect you...and it does. While the two companies I

Holley LS Fest Has Been Rescheduled And With An Added New Twist Due to the outbreak of COVID-19, this year’s show season was thrown completely up in the air. Show promoters were forced to wait and watch as this whole thing unfolded. Show goer’s health and best interest had to be kept in mind; as well as having to follow all of the nationwide and statewide guidelines. Decisions needed to be made. Many promoters made the tough decision to reschedule their shows while some of them had to make the even tougher decision of canceling them completely this year. Luckily, Holley LS Fest has been rescheduled. HOLLEY LS FEST WEST is held in Las Vegas, Nevada. And while the venue hasn’t changed, the dates have. This year, the show is being moved to the weekend of June 12-14, 2020. Vegas can get hot that time of the year. So to help beat the heat, the promoters have come up with an added twist to the show: LS Fest West Under the Lights! The same normal craziness will ensue, however, this year the show will just start a bit later and go until the night. And why not? Vegas is a city that never sleeps, right? No need to worry about the dark though. The Las Vegas Motor Speedway already has great stadium lighting. Not only that, but the staff will still be adding additional lights where they are needed to ensure a safe and fun environment for all. If you are currently registered for the show, all participants and spectator tickets will carry over to the new date. If you are not able to attend the new date and are previously registered – don’t worry. You will get a full refund on your ticket. Registration is still open until April 19th. So head on over to lsfest.com and register today! Also, be sure to keep an eye on the website as they are updating all information as it becomes available. If you have any other questions you can contact the event staff at lsfest@holley.com. 6

Story by “Landspeed” Louise Noeth & Joel Dunford Photo’s by Joel Dunford

Editors Note: Our friend “Landspeed” Louise Noeth told us about Joel earlier this year and showed us some of his work. We knew we had BRAG on him (He DESERVES IT and More!) and share his story with our readers. Meet Joel Dunford, Ceramicist of the go-fast kind. . . Carllectibles! is the clever moniker ceramic artist Joel Dunford works under to create a series of extreme limited edition hot rods, racecars and exotic sports cars. Dunford’s limited editions range from a mere 50 copies up to 200, each numbered and delivered with signed certificate of authenticity from Dunford.

This easy-going guy has quite knack for capturing the spirit and energy of every American hot rod icon he turns out – all in fine detail. Each finely detailed ceramic replica is first intricately sculpted, to a generously sized 1/16 scale with all the chrome accents detailed in 24K white or yellow gold. Some get embellished from end-to-end with superior quality gemstones like sparkling white topaz headlights and round cut rubies adorning the hub of each wheel!

Rod. My personal choices are usually cars with racing pedigrees, like the GT 40.” After choosing the car, the fun starts with hunting down photographs of the real car to begin the artistic journey. “With the So-Cal Streamliner, I only had three pictures and some sketchy measurements to work from,” he added. “After gathering as much info as possible, I begin to sculpt the car in clay. This sculpture is then used to make plaster molds out of which the base cars are produced.”

How does he decide which car to make? “I have two methods of choosing,” explained Dunford. “Customer request and personal choice. The customer request I am currently working on is a one-of-a-kind, '33 Willys Hot 22

Dunford pours liquid clay into the molds and when the clay has cured, the hours of hand sanding begins. Once satisfied with the smoothness, the main body color is applied along with the hand painted details before the first kiln firing at 2000 degrees. Next, the clear gloss is applied and the model is fired again. The final stage is the application of decals and 24 carat gold touches before the final firing. Dunford has sculpted 30 cars to date and 23

reports the most difficult details are the wheels. “Deep dish rims are a favorite of mine, but that means extra mold pieces. It’s tough to get good details in such a small area.

As for problems in the process that he has no real control over, are the multiple kiln firings. “Bad things can happen with all three firings,” explained Dunford who spends 10 to 15 hours on the various stages to get a finished car worthy for collectors. “If the underglaze doesn’t fit well with the greenware, it can flake off after the first firing. If the gloss doesn’t fit well with the fired car, it can crack, or pop off after the second firing. The third firing can produce hairline cracks that ruin the car. Of all the cars he’s sculpted, the most successful edition has been his first car, the iconic '41 Willys! 24

25

“I've been selling a version of it since I started Carllectibles! in 1993,” he said. Oddly, the car that hasn’t rocked the cash register very much is his snazzy '57 Chevy Funny Car. “I think I sold one, or two custom requests but that was it. After all the work I put in, it was a huge disappointment,” said glumly. Choosing cars to make is a gamble, but he was positive Don "the Snake" Prudhomme’s Top Fuel Dragster would be a hit. “When Don gave it his stamp of approval, it was a done deal,” said Dunford happily. In the future Carllectibles will be adding more sculptural tributes to the original designers, builders, and drivers of the most awesome machines on the planet! “So many cars, so little time!” he mused. From clay to coveted art piece | Images 1 through 5 Tangerine Dream Pro Mod Out of the mold comes the base car and its parts, this stage is known as “greenware” and Dunford must hand-sand and assemble the art piece fresh out of the plaster molds. The assembled, raw clay cars then have the body color applied, together with the hand painted details. The body color only changes after the gloss is applied and fired to 1900 degrees The next firing at 1800 degrees comes after he has applied the white or yellow golds that make the chrome sparkle and details pop. After that much heat, she's ready for the staging lane!
