“ Ya Gotta know where to Go….The FUN Starts Here….”
“His words really made me think…” Who is your Unsung Hot Rod Hero???
between a hot rod icon/hero and an unsung hero.
My good friend and many time contributor to the Gearhead Gazzette, Marty Crain asked me about running a story on one of his hot rod hero’s (se page 28 in this issue). My response was quick...YES I would love to. I knew before I read it that Marty’s feature would be top notch.
I am not going to ruin the story that Marty has written, would not be right. I do ask that you read it and maybe re-read it for yourself. The I would ask you to do something after you read the story. Take the time to write about your Unsung Hot Rod Hero and send it to us. We will help you thank and recognize YOUR unsung hot rod hero. We al have them. We didn't just one day decide I am going to be a hot rodder or car person. Some one or someone's INFLUNECED you in some special way to make you want to be a hot rodder for life.
After I received the pictures and more importantly the story he wrote, I read through the words more than a couple of times. His words really made me think about what he had written about.
If you send us your story we will print it. Don’t worry about the grammer as we will help you on that. Just take the time to tell someone how special they are to you.
We all have I suppose, well most of us, a Hot Rod hero or icon that we admire and look up to. Some person who has set an example that we try to copy or emulate in our lives. We try to be like them in this thing called hot rodding, because we like what they do or how they do it or just because of who they are.
Email it to us at gearheadgazzette@gmail.com. Who is your Unsung Hot Rod Hero? Live It Fully Everyday
There is a difference though 5

“the fun starts here”….
Electric Mustang Cobra Jet Debut’s! Call it Stealth Mode….Run silent, run fast. Ford introduced its first-ever electric drags car Friday April 24th, the Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 prototype, as the pony sub-brand expands its cred in the battery-powered world. The 1,400-horsepower Cobra Jet will stealthily shred a quarter-mile drag strip in just over 8 seconds, said Ford, while hitting a top speed of 170 mph. Similar to Chevrolet’s eCOPO Camaro electric drag car, the Cobra Jet 1400 is expected to do exhibition runs this fall at National Hot Rod Association drag meets. The eCOPO has clocked a 9.8-second quartermile. Electric drag cars are an anomaly in NHRA where fans congregate to see ground -shaking, flame-throwing gas beasts do battle.
The Cobra Jet 1400 comes in a year when Mustang will deliver its first-ever electric production vehicle, the Mach E, as it goes head-to-head with the Tesla Model Y in the compact SUV space. “Ford has always used motorsport to demonstrate innovation,” said Ford icons global chief Dave Pericak. “Electric powertrains give us a completely new kind of performance and the all-electric Cobra Jet 1400 is one example of pushing new technology to the absolute limit.” Cobra Jet is a familiar name to drag-racing fans as Ford’s customer offering in the NHRA Factory Stock class since 1968. Most recently, Ford introduced the 5.2-liter, 1,000-plus horsepower 2018 Mustang Cobra Jet to honor the car’s 50th anniversary. The gas-powered Jet competes against other fossil-fueled beasts like cross-town rivals Chevrolet Camaro COPO and Dodge Challenger Drag Pack. Notably, the Cobra Jet EVs specs are close to its gas sister which holds the NHRA Factory stock quarter-mile record of 7.7 seconds at 176 mph. Credit the electric dragster's eye-popping 1,100-plus pound feet of electric torque. The production Tesla Model S is notorious for causing dizziness under acceleration, so immediate is its 723-torque launches. The Cobra Jet is sure to cause more brain pain. For now the Cobra Jet 1400 is a one-off exhibition car with no plans for customer deliveries like the $130,000 gas-powered Cobra Jet. 6
Hennessey’s Hellcat V8 Gladiator Now in Production The Hennessey Performance Engineering Maximus 1000 Jeep Gladiator is now in production, the Texas-based company has announced. Four of the 24 planned Maximus Gladiators have been built and have been taken to the desert for testing. See some footage from the test in the video above.
“There’s nothing like jumping a 1000 HP Jeep over sand dunes,” said company founder John Hennessey. “Maximus 1000 is a very special vehicle under any driving conditions, on or off-road.” The 2020 Hennessey MAXIMUS 1000 includes: New 2020 Jeep Gladiator Truck 6.2L Supercharged Hellcat V8 Engine—8-speed Automatic Transmission HPE1000 Engine upgrade with 1000 HP & 933 lb-ft of Torque ECU, Wiring Harnesses, Radiator, Fuel System Stainless Steel Exhaust System—MAXIMUS Front & Rear Bumpers—LED Lights Hennessey 20-inch Wheels—BFG 20-inch KD Off-Road Tires Upgraded Suspension System with 6-inch Lift Custom Interior Leather Upgrade with Hennessey & MAXIMUS Embroidered Seats For more info go to http://hennesseyperformance.com/

Story & Photo’s by Marty Crain
We hear the word “legends” thrown around a lot these days. Lots of different definitions and descriptions of what constitutes being a “Legend”. In our hobby, sport, or as I refer to it, “Way of Life”, we have many legends. Some from the drag strips, round tracks, builders, designers, artist or all of the above. To me however, it’s the people that have had a profound influence on others in a positive life changing way. From the guys that just took that extra minute to stop and talk to a kid to the guys that achieved something no one else could do. Everyone has their list of legends that most have heard of and I would venture to say are on just about everyone else’s list. Don Garlits, Don Prudhomme, Bob Glidden, Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt, Ed Roth, George Barris, the list is long, deserving and on just about every Hot Rodders list. Most are nationally known; some are just known in their profession by others that share that trade or particular aspect of the sport. Some have reached legend status due to magazines, movies or books that have immortalized them.
We all have our Regional list of legends as well. In the Mid-South it’s Pappy Greenfield, Flookie Buford, Tommy Sanborn, Edward Woodard, Bill Akin, Bob Amos and Johnny Freund just to mention a few. I have been fortunate enough to meet and actually become friends with a lot of my boyhood legends. I’m sure I could list them, and you would have either met them too or at least know of them. 28
To me, the legends that top my list are those that took time to, share their life stories, teach, guide and lead others to understand and appreciate the car culture, what made it interesting, challenging and so special.
People like Tommy Sanborn and Edward Woodard but the ones I want to focus on and ask others to stop and do the same are the unsung legends or hero’s that shaped your life. The guys that really got you started and that just may be the real reason you’re a “Car Guy or Gal”. I’m going to tell you about the guy that had the most influence on me, the guy I most wanted to be like when I grew up, the guy that taught me how to build engines, transmission, differentials (I have a real story about a particular differential but that will have to wait) How to drive, I should say, “drive fast” and how to not only win at drag racing, the whole concept of beating the guy next to you and just what that meant. It began when I was ten years old, all the boys in school had someone they knew or had heard about that was fast or cool, had a bitchin’ ride but that someone to me was a cousin that I had grown up with, that was more like a big brother than a cousin. He pulled up in a 1966 Ford Fairlane GT with a 390 and left smokin’ the tires until he was outta-sight. His name is Steve Hargrove, from Lewisburg, Tennessee and was just about the coolest, fastest guy in the world (my world) He would take me cruising on weekends and come summer, soon as school was out, I would go spend weeks at a time at his house and watch him work on it. Soon the 390 gave way to a 428 Super Cobra Jet and around Lewisburg he quickly became the John Milner of Marshall County. Just a week after I turned 16 he sold me a 1969 Mustang Mach 1 he was building with a big block. Soon he was teaching me how to make it faster, and faster and when I would blow it up, he would teach me how to rebuild it (I required a lot of attention back 29

then as I was trying to be like him and out run the world). We’re still working on hot rods, you may see him cruising around in a bright red 1938 Ford sedan but it’s still no normal ’38 Sedan, if you think it’s him and want to know for sure, ask to look under the hood, don’t rev up your engine beside him at the light, that spirit of his youth hasn’t left him and the little red sedan has a 429 Super Cobra Jet crammed between the fenders. Steve Hargrove is my unsung hot rod legend and I just wanted to let him know how much I appreciate all those long weekends and working on gravel driveways, “sore knee”, busted knuckles and education he gave freely to me as a walked in his footsteps so many years ago. I probably said thanks a few times but I’m sure, never enough. I don’t have any pictures of that awesome little ’66 Fairlane, don’t know if any exist, I’ve posted a few I found on line of others that look very similar (owners unknown) but I want to challenge everyone that reads this to take the time to send in an article about your unsung hot rod legend and make sure they know what the moments of their life they gave, meant and still mean to you.

Story by Jimmy B / Photography by John Greenfield
When we hit 50 years old, a lot of time we as people take some time to reflect on our lives….where we’ve come from to get to 50….where we are headed and where we want to go. It’s an achievement in life...a milestone for sure. Sure we groan a little more and maybe even have some snapping and creaking noises as we get up and down, but that doesn’t stop us...we keep on keeping on.
In 2019 the National Street Rod Association celebrated the 50th anniversary of the “THE NATIONALS” in Louisville Kentucky. 50 years of bringing hot rodders, street rodders and gearheads of all kinds from all across the USA and even other countries together to enjoy this wonderful 42
sport, hobby and in our opinion...a way of life for so many of us.
Kentucky. Memphis Tennessee, Detroit Michigan, St Paul Minnesota, Oklahoma City Oklahoma and Columbus Ohio have all hosted the Nat’s.
From that idea by some of the ROD & CUSTOM magazine staff, to meet in the middle of the USA, in a town called Peoria Illinois to 2019...The Nat’s have come a LONG WAY BABY!
Hot rodders in 1970 in Peoria thought it was unbelievable that over 600 hot rods came to town for the first Nationals. Over the years the event has grown to the 10,000 plus registered participants on a yearly basis.
Over the 50 years The Nat’s have been held, we have all seen change come to the event. Some changes were loved...some tolerated and some were hated. One thing is for sure...whether you agreed or disagreed with the changes over time, the Nat’s kept moving forward.
The aftermarket industry took note of all these hot rodders and more and more parts companies grew up with the Nationals. These days it takes the Kentucky State Expo Center building (HUGE) to hold al the companies displaying their parts, pieces and services to gearheads.
Event locations changed many times before settling into it's home in Louisville 43

No different than us, many many “car type” magazines and publications have covered the Nationals over the past 50 years. They too have changed with the times going from print only to print and digital, and then to digital only (like us) and many have even gone away for good . Through it all, all those events, all those hot rods, street rods, cool cruisers and trucks that have rolled into the different fairground gates on Thursdays for the kick off and all weekend long have had one very important thing in them….YOU!! You the street rodder, the hot rodder, the spectator...the vendor...the NSRA official...all of us. Without us and our love of these “old Heaps” we drive and tweak on all the time, there never would have been a 50th NSRA Nationals. All these cars and trucks are just metal, plastic, rubber and gas. Without us...they are nothing. We could go on and on about this, but the NSRA Nat’s are still about all those cool cars and trucks. Take a walk down the many rows of hot rods on display at the 50th NSRA Nationals on the next few pages….hope you have comfortable shoes on...lot’s to see gearheads. 47
MAY 2020: MAY 7-9: SEVIERVILLE TN: Spring 2020 Dixie Gas Show: After careful consideration we have decided to proceed with the Dixie Gas Show. The decision was not made lightly, and is with input from me (Bryce Boiling) and other physicians. You can help us practice the social distancing guidelines. IMPORTANT RECOMMENDATIONS: 1. If you have a fever, cough, shortness of breath, loss of taste/smell or other respiratory symptoms, stay home. We have a large population of older participants at Dixie... Help us keep them safe. 2. Avoid shaking hands. 3. Keep some hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol in your pockets as there aren't sinks available to wash your hands at Dixie. 4. Practice Distancing. Please try to keep at least 6 feet of distance between you and people that are not members of your immediate family.....even if they don't look sick. The vast majority of cases (we believe around 80%) have been contracted from asymptomatic carriers. Chip will be selling 6 foot sticks to whack anyone who gets near you. 5. Avoid unnecessary touching of items. If you want to
see the back side of the sign, either sanitize your hands before touching it or ask the owner to show you the back side of the sign. 6. Finally, we are recommending you wear a mask. Even a homemade mask can help contain the spread of this illness. I can get in to the science of masks if anyone has concerns...just message me. You may still drop trailers ONLY on Wednesday. No set up until Thursday morning at 6am. Show starts promptly at 6am Thursday - no exceptions. Call me if you have questions. Most of you have my number, if not, message me. If you do not feel comfortable coming to Dixie, we completely understand given the circumstances. If there is a piece you are looking for, feel free to send me a picture and I will try my
best to keep my eyes open and help you find that piece. You may also reply to this post with a picture of what you're looking for and we can ask all attendees to help look for that item for you. If you had a delivery scheduled for Dixie and do not want to take the chance, either Chip or myself would be happy to hold this piece for you until you are ready to pick it up. Unfortunately, the Annual Vendor Dinner will be cancelled. Concessions will be available and we are working on strategies to keep everyone safe. Event being held at 3950 Newport Hwy.
