““”The decision to cancel is not easy ”“ .
“Blessed are the Flexible for they are willing to Bend… This is a saying that was posted at work that I used to see regularly. It had great meaning in the automobile assembly business. In my humble opinion it has great meaning these days too. I have wrote about this before and feel I need to touch on it again. 2021 is starting out shall we say “interestingly”. Not going to open debate pro or con, but the fact is the COVID-19 situation in our country continues here in the start of 2021. Fact is it will probably be around from more than a few months. Depending on what state or part of the county you live in, COVID-19 precautions may and will have an impact on car shows, car events and cruise-in’s. We have already seen the International Show Car Assoc. (ISCA) have to cancel shows and change the schedule by pushing shows to later in the first half of 2021. They are doing this to be able to hold most of their 2021 events. We are hoping it works out for them as we enjoy these shows too. Just this past Tuesday, two of the biggest and oldest indoor car shows in the country got cancelled.
The 2021 Grand National Roadster Show and the Sacramento Autorama, both produced by ROD SHOWS made the tough decision to cancel the 2021 events. Not an easy decision (see more on page 6). Show producers, whether its ROD SHOWS or the local car club have to follow the requirements of the governmental leaders in that area. While all may not agree with those decisions, the fact is they do affect these shows. I give credit to these show producers. They are trying to put on an event and there comes a point that they have to think about all the participants and vendors. Not getting a clear answer on go or no go by city/ county / state is not easy. Do you roll the dice and HOPE it happens, then when it doesn't everyone who drove hundreds if not thousands of miles for an event that gets cancelled crawls all over you, even though it was not their decision to cancel. The decision to cancel is not easy. Think of the loss of money & income they counted on. HUGE loss...do you think they did this because they can afford the loss...NO! My take is the first 3 month of 2021 are going to be tricky for show. All of us that like to attend them will need to be FLEXIBLE...it will be worth it in the end.
More Fun In 2021 5

GNRS & SACRAMENTO AUTORAMA CANCELLED! Sad news for hot rodders, gearheads and custom car lovers!
Rod Shows announced on Jan 12th the cancellation of both the Grand National Roadster Show & Sacramento Autorama for 2021. Per the Road Shows team, "Rod Shows is still exploring opportunities with Pomona Fairplex to hold an abridged event in a different format in place of GNRS, but no decisions have been finalized. Despite the lack of an event this year, Rod Shows extends its deepest gratitude to event sponsors, vendors, participants, and fans, without whom this tradition would not exist. Show staff expect a full return of both events in 2022."

Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance Postponed Citing COVID-19 developments both locally and around the globe, the 26th Annual Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance will move to May 20-23, event organizers announced. “At the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic The Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance Foundation made a promise to put the safety of our spectators, volunteers, entrants, judges, vendors, sponsors, staff and board of directors first,” said Chairman Bill Warner. “Every day since, our team has
consulted experts, followed local and national developments and weighed
our options. We worked tirelessly to create a plan that would allow us to move forward. We also set benchmarks that would require us to pause.” Moving the date will allow more time for the vaccine to be distributed, Warner add-
ed, and hosting the concours in May will likely increase attendance and corporate partnerships. Tickets and event packages purchased directly from The Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance Foundation will automatically be carried forward to the corresponding events during the week of May 2023. Current vendor and sponsor agreements will also be honored for the new dates. 7
Lordstown Motors Surpasses 100,000 Commercial Fleet Pre-Orders for All-Electric Pickup Lordstown Motors a new automaker producing electric light-duty trucks focused on the commercial fleet market, has received more than 100,000 non-binding production reservations from commercial fleets for its Lordstown Endurance all-electric pickup truck, with an average order size of nearly 600 vehicles per fleet. “Receiving 100,000 pre-orders from commercial fleets for a truck like the Endurance is unprecedented in automotive history,” said Steve Burns, CEO of Lordstown Motors. “Adding in the interest we have from federal, state, municipal and military fleets on top of that, I think you can see why we feel that we are about to revolutionize the pickup truck industry.” The Lordstown Endurance is a full-size, all-electric pickup that has a range of 250 miles, the equivalent of 600hp and can tow up to 7,500lbs. After successful prototype and Alpha builds, Lordstown is now building the first Beta Endurance vehicles and is on track to start of production in Sept. of this year. The initial Endurance is a crew cab configuration with medium bed length, priced at $45,000 after federal rebate.

ROAD TRIP…If you are a hot rodder or gearhead of any degree, you have dreamed about, planned it in your head, and talked about it with your hot rod
driving across the USA. We’re not talking about a 50 mile drive...nope...we’re across country, to that place you have long dreamed of driving your cool ride We met Peter Davis ( ‘32 Ford Roadster), Rick Grenier (‘28 Chevy Rat Rod P.U Denis Ally(‘39 Ford Sedan) while in Maine, at a cruise-in/car show at Bentleys were checking out the event and we started talking to the guys about their co us about their road trip to Bonneville for Speedweek. The more they told us a 18 from Maine to the Salt Flats in Utah. We haven’t Googled it, but based on wh

d friends‌ e talking about that drive e to. You know you have...many times. U.), Mike Ally (36 Ford Rat Rod P.U) and s Saloon(www.bentleyssaloon.com) late last year. We ool rides. While talking about their cars, they started telling about the trip, the more we were intrigued. Think about it...driving 19 hat we remember from geography class in school‌.its a LONG DRIVE!
This trip came together as 4 hot rod friends were saying “we should go to Bonneville”. The difference in this case...THEY MADE THE ROAD TRIP HAPPEN!!! One of the first things the guys did, was talk to the spouses and significant others, about wanting to do the trip. After talking to them about what they wanted to do...the guys got the THUMBS UP and from there it was GO time. Rick’s wife Kim even said she wanted to do this deal too! The only caveat for her was she was going to drive their regular vehicle. She didn't want to ride in the ‘29 Chevy Rat Rod Truck that far, as it rides a little rough for her….LOL! Well it is a low slung rat rod! It’s also good to have a support vehicle with you and Kim took care of that part of the trip. Dan Chaplin, another hot rod friend with the guys, rode along on the trip too. His car wasn’t ready, but he didn't want to miss this deal! The guys all did prep work to get ready for the trip. As usually happens, time to prep ran out, and it was time to leave. No time to give the hot rods some highway checkout time, it would happen on the road to Bonneville. As the guys are getting ready to pull out, Rick had the front glass pop/fall out of the frame on his 29 Chevy Rat Rod. No worries though, some duct tape to set it back in place and a spare front glass was in the truck and it was time to get rolling. They headed out and went up into Canada to save some time heading west, 20
21
versus dropping down and across New York, Pennsylvania and more states. They ended up crossing Lake Michigan on a catamaran and landed in Wisconsin. They continued to head west and drove thru the Badlands in SD. Along the way they met up with the Rolling Bones Hot Rods coming out of New York, in West Bountiful UT, and rolled onto the salt flats with them the first day. After a great time on the Salt Flats, they left Bonneville and headed to Las Vegas. Along the way they found every bump they could to knock as much of the salt off the hot rods. If you’re doing your dream road trip, why not do the things and see the places you have always wanted to. Since they were in Vegas, they drove down the strip in 112 degree sunshine. Again, doing what they always wanted to, and squeezing more hot rod fun in, they got a tour of Steve Darnell’s shop Welder Up in Las Vegas When they left Las Vegas they chose to head east and drove down the “Mother Road”, U.S Rt 66 in Arizona. Having driven on RT 66, and getting a check on the bucket list, the guys then headed north and drove thru the mountains in Colorado (elevation a little over 12,000 ft.). The guys left Colorado and turned east towards home. They weren’t done having fun though. They went to a rat rod show, High Plains Riot, held in Scotts Bluff, Nebraska. All good things come to an end. It was 22
time to really head home. They drove east from Nebraska thru the Midwest. This time they went thru Pennsylvania and up thru the Northeast states back to Maine...back home. Peter is a numbers guy in his day job. He kept a spreadsheet on the trip. 19 days on the road. Approximately 6700 miles rolled on the odometers of the cars.19 days from start to finish. They averaged driving 9 hours a day with as many as 13 and as few as 2 hours on one day. Average speed on the trip, 52mph. Our hats are off to these 4 guys. They did what a lot of us want to do. They made memories that will last a life time. If you think you cant do the same thing as peter, Rick, Mike and Denis...you CAN. The only thing that holds us back is ourselves. The guys used radios to keep in contact during the drive. After a stop while they were all in their cars, they knew it was time to roll when they heard…”Let’s Haul!” And Haul they did! 23
