SEMA Accepting Nominations for ‘35 Under 35’ List SEMA will be highlighting rising stars in the automotive aftermarket who are 35 and younger and is accepting nominations for its “35 Under 35” list until May 31, the organization announced. The organization will be recognizing young industry professionals in a variety of roles, including manufacturing and design, marketing, retail, events and media or distribution. ROUSH Performance Launches Mustang iRacing Series ROUSH PERFORMANCE is launching a new Mustang Series to be held on the iRacing virtual motorsports simulation platform beginning March 31, the company announced. Along with several star guests, promotional partners include Recaro Automotive, Hagerty and Continental Tire. The eight-race series will be held at virtual versions of some of America’s most iconic tracks, including Watkins Glen, Circuit of the Americas and more. Racers will compete in the 635-horsepower Supercars Ford Mustang GT, capable of zero60 mph in just 3.2 seconds and speeds over 185 mph. The races will be broadcast live on Facebook on the ROUSH Performance Esports page. ROUSH Mustang Series Schedule March 31 – Road Atlanta May 26 – Sonoma

* Tentative for adjustment to accommodate professional driver participation. A two-hour practice session will take place on the Tuesday before each race from 7-9 p.m. Eastern. Races will be held on Wednesday nights at 8 p.m. Eastern, starting with a 10minute qualifying session and followed by two 30-minute races or three 20-minute races, depending on the track. Track conditions will be as close as possible to live track conditions while working within the simulator settings and other considerations for drivability. The Mustang Series will feature sim racers from around the world, including Ryan Newman and Chris Buescher of the ROUSH Fenway Racing NASCAR Team. A limited number of applicants will be selected to participate in the ROUSH Mustang series. Mooneyes Documentary in Development If you look at the roots of the southern California racing scene at the dry salt lakes, you’ll find Dean Moon’s name and efforts etched in the salt. Moon was heavily involved in hot rods and racing as early as his high school days, and later started the Mooneyes brand of racing equipment. Now after his death, Shige Suganuma and Chico Kodama carry on the “google eyes” tradition. Moon grew up in Southern California in the 1940s and sold a fuel distribution block that he made in his high school shop class. After serving in the Korean War, Moon opened up the Mooneyes speed shop and sold an often-imitated gas pedal in the shape of a barefoot. He also crafted a small fuel tank to allow dragsters to clock off their quarter-mile runs without too much weight from the fuel. Later, Moon created a full-face wheel cover for the salt racers to decrease drag. These wheel covers are still referred to as “Moon discs.” Moon sponsored drag racers that sported his “googling eyes” decal. After his death, Suganuma and Kodama came forward and bought the company in 1992 to carry on the tradition. Since acquiring the company in 1992, Suganuma and Kodama, two Japanese hot-rodders, have built Mooneyes into an international brand, honoring legendary founder Dean Moon’s legacy and celebrating car and motorcycle culture. Now, filmmaker Ming Lai is currently finishing up a documentary that tells the story of the business and the men behind it. Called “Craft of Speed,“ Lai is seeking crowdfunding support to finish the film. According to Lai, the documentary will highlight Suganuma and Kodama’s roles as Asian-Asian American pioneers in the industry and how they battled against racism and xenophobia and to ultimately create a global following. The film will also show Suganuma’s attempts to grow the company despite declining interest in hot rods and Kodama handcrafting a new modified street rod to try to break his second land speed record at Bonneville Salt Flats. Filming began in 2019 and Lai said he hopes to have the 90-minute film ready by July 2022. With crowdfunding support, Lai says, he will obtain enough funds to finish the film. “I was introduced to Mooneyes by my father-in-law, who used to own a ’32 Ford Roadster in bright yellow and equipped with Mooneyes speed parts. Later, I had the honor of meeting Chico Kodama, the president of Mooneyes USA, and I was inspired by his and Mooneyes owner Shige Suganuma’s incredible story,” Lai said. “With their full support, my team and I are making a feature documentary about their lives and work.”

“The film is an epic origin story of legendary Mooneyes founder Dean Moon and his worthy successors, Suganuma and Kodama. Gateway Bronco Announces Auto Tech Scholarship Gateway Bronco has introduced the Gateway Bronco “Innovators” scholarship that recognizes and rewards aspiring automotive restoration and repair leaders with scholarships and internships for students at two automotive technology schools, the builder announced. Gateway Bronco CEO Seth Burgett, along with Aaron Shelby, grandson of auto legend Carroll Shelby and co-President of the Carroll Shelby Foundation, and Craig Jackson, chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson, announced the scholarships and the corresponding internship benefitting the auto restoration program at McPherson College and the Carroll Shelby Automotive Program at Northeast Texas Community College. “Everyone at Gateway Bronco has a keen appreciation for the fine art of auto repair, restoration and reimagination,” said Burgett. “I started my first business at just 12 years old, an engine repair shop, in our family shed and later paid for college by painting cars. Most of our team at Gateway Bronco have similar stories, which is why we believe so strongly in promoting innovation and education. By working with top automotive tech programs, we hope to inspire and prepare the next generation of young people to push the envelope through meaningful careers in this exciting industry.” The Gateway Bronco Innovators program will award $5,000 and help offset cost of living expenses for a summer internship at the company’s production facility outside St. Louis. A scholarship will be given every Spring to a student at each school who continues to demonstrate commitment to the profession. The 8-week internship assignments at Gateway Bronco will be aligned with college curriculum. In addition, scholarship recipients can attend marquee automotive events and meet industry stakeholders. The Carroll Shelby Foundation is a major supporter of the Carroll Shelby Automotive Program at NTCC. The program teaches the operation and repair of the eight Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) areas in the National Technicians Certification Master Technician Program. “Carroll Shelby strongly believed that learning to repair and restore vehicles was a clear road to a better life for young people,” said John McCullough, vice president for institutional advancement at Northeast Texas Community College. “That is why he was such a strong supporter of the Carroll Shelby Automotive Program through the Carroll Shelby Foundation. I am confident that he would be pleased that others are now joining our efforts to help kids win the race for life. The scholarship will be very helpful to a student and the internship, especially with the opportunity to network with others in the industry, will be extremely valuable. We appreciate Seth Burgett and the Gateway Bronco team for including us in their program.” The announcement was made at the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction in Scottsdale by Craig Jackson, a former member of the National Advisory Board for Auto Restoration and McPherson College donor. The Automotive Restoration Technology Program at McPherson College was established in 1976 through a gift of collectible cars from Gaines H. “Smokey” Billue. In 1997, Jay Leno established two scholarships that provide financial assistance to students interested in studying classic auto restoration. Today, it stands alone as the only school to provide a bachelor’s degree in Restoration Technology. “Our bachelor’s degree in restoration technology is the only one of its kind in the nation,” said Amanda Gutierrez, vice president for Automotive Restoration at McPherson College. “One of the core aspects is that our students have the opportunity to work with an amazing group of classic cars ranging from vintage Mercedes to Mustangs. Hands-on internships are especially important at McPherson and the Gateway Bronco program opens an entirely new avenue for our students to innovate, learn and refine their skills while earning college credit.” Gateway Bronco offers reconditioned Ford Broncos and 100 percent reproduction Broncos licensed by Ford Motor Company with contemporary engines, transmission, brakes and suspensions engineered to make the classic SUV perform similar to a modern vehicle.
