There is another option... Flexibility from gearheads will be needed in 2021... As we worked on this issue of the GEARHEAD GAZZETTE magazine, we got word that two of our favorite indoor shows, and two of the biggest indoor shows in the USA were cancelled. The DETROIT AUTORAMA and the CHICAGO WORLD OF WHEELS shows were both cancelled within days of each other. These two great events which run on back to back weekends, are huge events to say the least. Detroit has the RIDDLER award and Chicago has the LEGEND CUP, both sought after by car owners and builders. Both of these shows fell victim to government guidelines as it relates to the COVID-19 pandemic in our country. HOLD THE HATE MAIL !!! I am only telling you why they were cancelled. Everyone has their own opinion on the COVID situation in our country and thanks ok. Both of these shows and the folks who produce them did not want to cancel the show, but had to. This threw a lot of you, myself included into a situation of not having an event to go to on that particular weekend. WRONG!!! This is where FLEXIBILTY comes into play for all of us gearheads.

Example, the same weekend as the Detroit show was scheduled, the Darryl Starbirds National Rod & Custom show is TAKING PLACE in Tulsa OK. This show is STILL HAPPENING. Why not go to see it instead. If you were flying to Detroit why not switch your ticket and hotel reservations to Tulsa. Will this work for everyone...no...but it is an option. Same weekend is the NSRA Nationals South in Knoxville TN. Another option for us. Still yet, read thru this issue and you will see ALL KINDS OF car events all across the USA!! Pick one and go have some hot rod fun. There is another option if you have a cool car or truck in your garage...go drive it all weekend long. You cold spend some time cleaning it up, checking it over for this years car fun season and GO DRIVE YOUR COOL RIDE. I saw so much bitching on social media about events being cancelled it makes me sick. It’s going to happen all year long. Instead of complaining, go have some hot rod fun some other way...so many options...so little time …

Exciting news from the So-Cal Speed Shop camp! Peter Chapouris IV is back at So-Cal Headquarters and has been appointed the General Manager position. Peter, the son of the late Pete Chapouris, was practically born in a hot rod and has that same love and passion for the industry. He is excited and is committed to carry on the legacy of this iconic brand. But that’s not all, So-Cal is celebrating its 75th Anniversary this year. The brand was started in 1946 by Alex Xydias as a single speed shop located in Burbank Ca. supplying hot rod parts to a growing contingent of hot rodders and dry lake racers. Alex Xydias just celebrated his 99th birthday last month and is still going strong. He eagerly wrote a letter attached below describing his thoughts on the continuation of the So-Cal Speed Shop legacy. Alex Xydias Sun Valley, CA – March 29, 2021 The date was March 4, 1946 – I was 23 years old. I had just been discharged from the Air Force after 3-1/2 years and I had decided to open a speed shop. Of course, I had no money! I knew nothing about business and nobody in hot rodding had even heard of me. On the plus side, I loved hot rods. I had gone to the dry lakes before the war (never raced) and had taken Auto Shop at Fairfax High. So… No Problem, the rest is history. Wow! That was 75 years ago! The So-Cal logo is again being held high by a group that respects its history and are inspired by its future. But wait… there’s more! The Chapouris name is returning to So-Cal! Pete Chapouris #4 is stepping in for his dad, Pete Chapouris #3. He is the new General Manager. His assets for So-Cal are countless. He almost grew-up at the shop. He was trained by one of the best. Chevy Performance Named Sponsor of New Goodguys Builder of the Year Awards GOODGUYS ROD & CUSTOM Association has announced that Chevrolet Performance is now the official sponsor of two new trophies added to its 2021 “of the Year” awards: the “Goodguys Chevrolet Performance Builders of the Year,” one which will recognize and showcase the top GM vehicle, and one the top non-GM vehicle and its builder. The sponsorship will also extend to the “Goodguys Chevrolet Performance Builder’s Choice Saturday Special Area” for the remainder of the 2021 event series. “This is special in many ways, but the most significant piece is Chevrolet’s support in recognizing, not only the cars, but the builders who developed them,” said Goodguys VP of Sales & Partnerships Jason Snyder. “Chevrolet Performance is legendary in respect to performance and hot-rodding, but also with new emerging technology that allows the hot-rodding and custom community to continue to break new ground. To participate, builders will need to register their participating vehicle when they check-in for each event and must park their vehicle in the Chevrolet Performance Builder’s Choice special parking area on Saturday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. One vehicle and its builder will be chosen as a “finalist” for each class by the Goodguys Awards Selection Committee. The classes include the “Chevrolet GM Iron Builder of the Year” for GM vehicles, and the “Chevrolet Retro Iron Builder of the Year” for non-GM vehicles with a GM powertrain to build a field of fourteen finalists for each class. “Chevrolet Performance is proud to collaborate with Goodguys and recognize builders who are passionate about Hot Rods and Performance. This is an exciting opportunity for us to connect with our loyal enthusiasts” said Todd Gallant, Chevrolet Performance marketing manager. For years, rumors had circulated around the Nashville Tennessee area about a Model A Ford coupe just a few miles from downtown that had been setting in a garage since the late sixties or early seventies, like most “barn find” stories, it was driven into the garage and hadn’t been seen since. Yea Right, never really took the story to 59 be factual, just another urban legend until one afternoon a

co-worker said the guy that lived behind him had a couple old cars covered with dust and one looked like a Model-A coupe.

Of course I went quick as possible and was told by the resident, “sorry, it’s my grandfathers and I can’t let anyone in the garage without his permission.” After a lot of discussion, he finally gave me his grandfathers phone number and said “you’ll have to have him call me first!” He wouldn’t even confirm if the Model-A was in there or not. I knew long time friend, car builder and true street rodder, George Toombs had been looking for a nice Model-A for a while. We called and got permission to “just look” but it wasn’t for sale! After seeing it we knew we would have to find a way to buy it. The rumors were true, it was the Mythical Model-A so many had been talking about for years and it was just out of reach. After another 60

Call, we were able to make a deal.

We had to wait until dark, pull out a Model-T that had been parked in front of it since 1972 out and quickly pull out the coupe and put the Model-T back in to prevent anyone from seeing it. They didn’t want people knowing what was in the garage. So, quickly as possible we loaded it up on a roll back, took it to a local shop and gave it a light washing before carrying it to George’s garage where it would set in the corner for another half decade. George, having dreamt of building and owning a Hot Rod Model-A most of his life was gathering parts and taking his time in order to make sure it would turn out to be one of the finest coupes around. Brookeville frame painted bright red with a chrome-drilled Super Bell Ibeam up front and an 8” Ford differential swinging via four bar and coil over shocks on the rear. Vintage Air, American Auto wire, Ididit steering column topped off with a Grant banjo wheel. The dash is well thought out and very unique using the stock dash, George filled and smoothed the center and inserted a ’46 Lincoln speedometer that looks like something made by Rolex, chrome, pearl, gold with factory turn signal indicator lights. The Lincoln gauge cluster was obtained with updated mechanisms to work with the modern engine and twelve volt system and matching passenger side insert installed to give the dash a factory look. 61

Powered by a 350 Chevy mouse motor that breathes though a Edelbrock carb and intake, exhales out Flowmaster mufflers and is cooled via a Walker radiator. Power is transferred thru a B&M stall converter bolted to a Chevy TH350 trans. George filled the roof and inserted a section of early Chevy station wagon inverted ribs down the center. The body was where George applied his true trade. Being a paint and body man he smoothed every inch down to perfection before laying down some old school single stage black enamel and buffing it out to perfection. George and his wife Joyce even did the upholstery themselves. This is truly a homebuilt hot rod. Everything from the first bolt removed to the final fit and finish was done in George’s garage. The only thing George didn’t do was the pin stripping, that finishing touch was left up to the legendary artist, Tom Sanborn but even that, was done at George’s garage. It was a twenty year, overnight success and turned out just as George had envisioned, becoming one of the finest Model-A coupes in the country.
