“still digging what I grew up on….” Super Bowl 2022 is complete and now we move on to more fun stuff... So this past Sunday the LA Rams and Cincinnati Bengals fought it out to see who would be the Super Bowl champs for 2022. Congrats goes to the Rams for getting the win and a well played goes to the Bengals too. Now its time for gearhead events to ramp up big time. Spring is around the corner and with it comes car fun. Motorsports kicks off its season with the NASCAR Daytona 500 this coming Sunday and the NHRA Winternationals are getting ready to run at Pomona too. For me, I wont be watching either event on TV. It’s not that I don’t appreciate the racers, teams and everyone who puts the whole deal together. Their work is to be commended. For me the cars are all the same. Take the decals and body wraps off and the mold they pull the bodies from are virtually identical. There is no longer a “what wins on Sunday sells on Monday” relationship. I guess there could be...since they all look the same, at least to me. No matter who wins Sunday, you can go to any dealer that has a facsimile in the race and buy that car and say it won on Sunday in the race.

This holds true for both NASCAR and NHRA. NASCAR’s Car of Tommorow is almost egg shaped for less wild resistance. NHRA, the funny cars are all door wedge looking bodies. Don’t believe me...watch the races on TV and then we’ll talk. If there is no spark in what you see racing, then there is no desire to follow the series. If you think I am wrong, take a look at the South East Gasser Association. They run real cars that actually came off an assembly line years ago. Many different motor/trans combos too. They fill up the stands at the tracks they run at all summer long. Go to a nostalgia drag race. Front Engine Dragsters, Funny Cars that REALLY LOOK like what Detroit built old school straight axle gassers leaving the line with the wheels up...they fill the stands every time. Maybe its just me...getting on in years and still digging what I grew up on. I bet if someone set up a GRAND NATIONAL series like back in the day, race track promoters would be begging them to come to the track for a show...jus’ sayin’

Ford GT Alan Mann Heritage Edition Celebrates GT Prototypes As a tribute to Alan Mann Racing’s 1966 Ford GT lightweight experimental prototypes, Ford has introduced the Ford GT Alan Mann Heritage Edition. The limited-edition vehicle celebrates the role the prototypes played in the history of the development of the Ford GT.

“Whether it’s going like hell at the racetrack or out-innovating the competition, the Ford GT Alan Mann Heritage Edition honors the vehicles that helped lead Ford to its wins,” said Mike Severson, Ford GT program manager. “With its red and gold livery, this Ford GT is inspired by Alan Mann Racing’s contribution to our Le Mans-winning story.” In 1965-66, Alan Mann Racing used lighter materials to create AM GT-1, along with a second car, based on the GT Mk I. While neither prototype won a major race, the use of lightweight materials was similar to what helped Ford win Le Mans with the GT Mk II in 1966, the automaker said. This spirit continues in today’s Ford GT supercar, with its lightweight carbon fiber body cloaked as a GT Heritage Edition for 2022 in colors and stripes inspired by the AM GT-1.

In addition to wearing unique Alan Mann red exterior paint with gold graphics, this limited-edition GT includes a dual over-the-roof racing stripe, Frozen White signature accent stripes and roundels with No. 16 on the doors, hood and underside of the rear wing. Exposed gloss carbon fiber components are prominent, including on the 20-inch wheels, front splitter, side sills, mirrors, engine louvers and rear diffuser. Brembo brake calipers lacquered in black with red graphics, plus black lug nuts further modernize the aesthetic. Carbon fiber carries into the cabin, appearing on door sills, console and registers. Ebony Alcantarawrapped carbon fiber seats feature gold and red accent stitching, while embossed seating surfaces and head restraints carry the GT logo. The instrument panel is wrapped in Ebony leather and Alcantara, while pillars and headliner are wrapped in Ebony Alcantara. Gold appliqués on the instrument panel, door register bezels and seat X-brace are paired with the matte carbon fiber registers, door sills, lower A-pillars and console. The steering wheel is finished in Ebony Alcantara with black stitching, while dualclutch paddle shifters are finished in exterior-matching Alan Mann red. Wrapping up its final year of production, the 2022 Ford GT Alan Mann Heritage Edition pays tribute to Alan Mann Racing and the support the team provided from England in 1965. Lessons learned from Alan Mann Racing improved the capabilities of the Ford GT40 and led to its third- and fourthfastest times in the 1966 Le Mans trials. “It’s a great honor for Alan Mann Racing and the Mann family to celebrate the epic motorsports heritage of Ford GT with this fantastic limited-edition car,” said Henry Mann, director, Alan Mann Racing Ltd. “To see the red and gold colors of our team’s livery come back to life, and to debut this new GT alongside one of our original GT40s in Chicago will be a magical occasion.” 8

Ford Debuts Everglades Edition Bronco Ford has debuted the new 2022 Ford Bronco Everglades special edition, a four-door model with factory-installed features such as a snorkel, integrated front bumper-mounted winch and all the off-road equipment in the Bronco Sasquatch Package.

“Bronco customers like to explore new places, but some want to go even further off the trail than others,” said Jolanta Coffey, Bronco chief engineer. “Everglades is specially equipped to enable these customers to tackle even more challenging terrains and trails – and with the front bumpermounted winch, they can help others out of trouble while they’re at it.” Bronco Everglades introduces a class-exclusive signature snorkel. Designed and engineered by Ford, the snorkel – which runs up the passenger-side A-pillar –uses two swappable plates to change the direction of the inlet based on trail and weather conditions, Ford said. Front and rear axles, transfer case and transmission also offer raised vents for improved water fording. Combined, these design changes lead to water fording capability of 36.4 inches, Ford said. A heavy-duty modular front bumper by Ford Performance with ZEON 10-S WARN winch – featuring 10,000-pound capability and a 100-foot synthetic line – comes standard, along with a protective safari bar, rock rails and the same steel bash plates found on Black Diamond and Badlands Bronco models, as well as a Carbonized Gray grille with gloss black Bronco lettering.

The Sasquatch Package features 17-inch Carbonized Gray-painted alloy wheels with 35-inch Goodyear mudterrain tires. Additional exterior appointments include rock rails to protect the lower sills, plus a molded-in-color hardtop and roof rack with crossbars. The Bronco design team also added squared front and rear wheel arches with matching Sasquatchwidth fender flares and graphics with Everglades topography on the front quarter fenders. Bronco Everglades features standard marine-grade vinyl seats and rubberized washout flooring. New Urban Green accents provide a subtle color touch on grab handles, air register vents and seat stitching.

In addition to mid-package content, Bronco Everglades features a class-exclusive 12-inch SYNC 4 system with Ford Power-Up over-the-air software updates. Its 2.3-liter EcoBoost delivers 300 horsepower and 325 lb.-ft. of torque is paired to a SelectShift 10-speed automatic transmission with advanced 4×4 system and a maximum 67.8:1 crawl ratio. The new 2022 Bronco Everglades is available in five exterior colors, including Everglades-exclusive low-volume Desert Sand, plus Eruption Green, Area 51, Shadow Black and Cactus Gray. Bronco Everglades will join the Bronco lineup this summer. 9

Upgrade Your Squarebody Lighting With LED Parking Lights From UPI Unfortunately, the lighting utilized in your hot rod or classic cruiser might not be an aspect of your ride that you put much thought into. But believe me when I say, you should. If you do any driving at night, being seen by others on the road and being able to see is quite important. That said, the factory lighting in many classics is not on par with current vehicles, and that can cause a safety issue. 2022 Al Slonaker Memorial Award

As we showed you in our last issue, The Grand National Roadster Show came roaring back in 2022 after taking 2021 off due to the COVID issue across America, While the GNRS may be best known for the Americas Most Beautiful Roadster (AMBR) competition, there is another award handed out each year that is equally important for builders and owners of non-roadster vehicles...The Al Slonaker Award. The Al Slonaker Memorial award is named after Al and Mary Slonaker, who founded the Grand National Roadster Show in 1949. The award is dedicated to the memory of Al and Mary Slonaker, The award has been presented to the top non-roadster show since 1974. The Al Slonaker Memorial Award reached parity with AMBR a few years back with a matching $12,500 prize thanks to award sponsor ARP Bolts. This year, Hollywood Hot Rods owner Troy Ladd won the award for building Pat Gauntt's 1932 Ford. The Deuce is a classic Cadillac-powered coupe that took 15 years to complete. In addition to the exemplary workmanship, the '32 has a unique cockpit-controlled suspension system that uses pressurized oil to raise and lower the vehicle. This year’s win is another feather in the cap of hot rod impresario Troy Ladd from Hollywood Hotrods. Gauntt’s Ford Coupe features a buffed-up 331 Cadillac engine with 390 heads and burly high-compression pistons. Many surprises lurk on the car like brass hinges with pins, incredible custom jewelry, and elaborate machine work, all steeped together in a funky steampunk brew. The Slonakers must be smiling from above. While the ‘32 Coupe took home the big award, all the Slonaker Award Contenders were great builds also, with so much innovation and creativity running thru each off them.
