Ya Gotta know where to Go...The FUN Starts Here “Every car or truck built doesn't work for everybody” Some of you need to remember the Golden Rule when it comes to hot rods….. It pains me to say it, but some of you gearheads are just down right mean and nasty. It’s not a huge percentage of us car folks, but there are more than a few that need to think before opening their mouths...especially on social media. I get that a person can say what they want these days, but that doesn't mean you should. My heartburn on this comes from comments that I saw and heard during the 2022 Detroit Autorama and afterwards on social media platforms. The 2022 Ridler Winner took some major cheap shots in my humble opinion. I met Rick Bird at the show. He owns the 1931 Chevy Coupe that WON the Ridler Award this year. He had it built and helped on the build. He funded the build and brought the car to Detroit to compete. This was a dream of his and he and his hot rod were picked to win. CONGRATULATIONS TO Rick! More than a few folks “trash talked” Rick’s car and even Rick, even though they did not know his name. They didn't think the car should have won or they thought it was a waste of money, didn't like the way it looks...etc..etc and you know the rest and how it went.

Well all you critics and pundits, lets see pictures of your high end build! Bring them out and post them up on social media. Break out your Ridler trophy or even show us your Great 8 Award from Detroit showing your achievement. Fact is you cant! Fact is a lot of people who trash talked this hot rod don’t even own a specialty car or truck and have never built or had built, a hot rod of any kind. The Golden Rule sez...as a reminder, “Treat others as you yourself would want to be treated”. Every car or truck built doesn't work for everybody in the gearhead world . That's ok as we are all different. What I drive( my 32 Coupe) or what I am building and HOW I am building it( 32 Ford Roadster) wont be everyone's cup of tea as they say…and I expect that. I do expect courtesy from other gearheads though. Appreciate the workmanship even if you don’t like the car. There’s no reason for any of this at anytime. Big show, local show or cruise, go out and enjoy the event, dig the cool cars and meet the owners too. You will find they are really great people and they will treat you nicely too...its easy folks...really

ROUSH Performance Unveils 2022 Ranger Package ROUSH PEFORMANCE has unveiled its 2022 ROUSH Ranger, which includes an upgraded off-road performance suspension, upgraded wheels, 32-inch all-terrain tires, off-road lighting and premium interior upgrades. The ROUSH Ranger is available in nine different exterior colors, including an all-new Hot Pepper Red Metallic option. The ROUSH Ranger features a dual-tip cat-back exhaust system that increases horsepower and torque while providing an aggressive exhaust note, the company said. The 50-statelegal exhaust system uses corrosion-resistant 304 stainless steel and includes dual-wall exhaust tips. The ROUSH Performance suspension system improves the Ranger’s off-road performance while also increasing stability on the street, ROUSH Performance said. The front coilover shocks feature tuned performance springs and are preset with 2-inches of lift to level the truck’s stance. ROUSH 18-inch satin black wheels are wrapped in 32-inch General Tire Grabber A/TX all-terrain tires, enhancing the truck’s capabilities on the trail without compromising comfort and control on the street. A ROUSH grille adds signature ROUSH styling and includes dual LED light bars. Magnetic Gray fender flares with integrated accent lighting accommodate the larger tires and give the truck a wider, more aggressive appearance. Additional ROUSH exclusive aesthetic upgrades include the standard graphics package, custom red tow hooks and heat-extracting fender vent badges. ROUSH’s custom interior touches include premium leather seating, embroidered headrests, a ROUSH gauge cluster and serialized badging, ROUSH floor liners by WeatherTech and custom ROUSH key fobs. Owners can further upgrade the ROUSH Ranger with an optional off-road utility kit, locking vaults for the center console and rear seats and various graphic package upgrades. “The Ranger platform has quickly become one our most popular trucks models,” said Jack Roush Jr. “We’re proud to offer the Ranger with improved styling cues and performance, properly equipping it to perform better on nearly any terrain.” The ROUSH Ranger package is available for 2022 Ford Ranger XLT trim level trucks equipped with the 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine. 8

Pat Musi Racing Engines to Host Open House at New Mooresville Facility PAT MUSI RACING ENGINES and Musi Racing will celebrate the grand opening of their new race facility, located at 1160 Gateway Drive in Mooresville, North Carolina, with a special open house on April 30, the engine builder and race team announced. The open house will give fans the chance to tour the new building that houses the Musi Racing operation, as well as the engine building facility that features the Edelbrock Race Center, which is located at 379-B Timber Rd in Mooresville. Fans can also meet Musi and his team, as well as driver Lizzy Musi, who will be on hand at the racing facility for autographs and photos. Her Edelbrock and Lucas Oilpowered “Bonnie” Camaro, which she raced during the 2021 Street Outlaws: No Prep Kings season, will be on display at the open house, along with the “Aftershock” Camaro. The event also takes place during the same weekend as the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals at nearby zMAX Dragway in Concord, North Carolina. “We’re really excited about this new building and the chance for all the fans to see it and get a look at everything we’ve got going on inside,” Musi said. “It’s really going to be a neat event and a good deal all the way around. We’ve got a lot to show off and it’s on a good weekend where people can come here and then check out the racing at the track. It will be great to have Lizzy here as well and we’re really looking forward to it.” The new facility will also be home to Musi’s new restoration-mod business, which is set to launch soon. This exciting development will include the purchasing, upgrading and reselling of muscle cars, with Musi and his team working to install the Edelbrock-Musi 555 crate engine in many of the vehicles, the company said. Several engines built by Pat Musi Racing Engines will also be on display at the open house, as well as the in-house machinery at Pat Musi Racing Engines. A number of Musi’s partners will be in attendance as well, including Edelbrock, Lucas Oil, SRI Performance / Stock Car Steel and Aluminum, and more. Superformance, Shelby Legendary Cars Announce Replica Car Manufacturing Plans Executives with Superformance and Shelby Legendary Cars have announced plans to manufacture a limited number of turnkey replica cars under the new Low Volume Manufacturer’s Act. The companies intend to offer cars that comply with new rules issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which resemble the heritage model GT40, Corvette Grand Sport and Shelby Cobra sports cars, the companies said. “We’re very excited to offer turn-key vehicles under the Low Volume Manufacturer’s Act and have aggressively been planning for this day since Congress enacted the bill in 2015,” said Lance Stander, CEO of Superformance. “While the legislation was moving through the rule making process at NHTSA and the EPA, we designed processes and vehicles that we believe will comply with all regulations. With all the rules now issued, we’ll collaborate with SEMA, engine suppliers and regulators to ensure that our exciting vehicles fit within their framework. Our goal is to sell compliant cars by the end of the year.” Until the new rule took effect, the U.S. had just one system for regulating automobiles, which was designed for companies that mass-produce vehicles. SEMA-backed efforts led to the new low-volume replica car law, which was recently implemented via the NHTSA and EPA.

According to SEMA, the replica car law and implementing regulations allow a low volume manufacturer like Superformance or Shelby Legendary Cars to construct up to 325 such replica cars a year subject to federal regulatory oversight. The cars must resemble production vehicles manufactured at least 25 years ago and meet current model year emissions standards. Shelby Legendary Cars has traditionally offered a line of vehicles that were sold as a rolling chassis. Going forward, every complete, turnkey Cobra by Superformance, as a license of Shelby, will be a Shelby Cobra branded vehicle, only, the company said. Every vehicle from Shelby Legendary Cars receives a Shelby American serial number and is documented in the Shelby American Worldwide Registry. Consistent with the new law and regulations, the only companies who can manufacture, build and sell a Shelby Cobra or any other heritage Shelby vehicle is Shelby and its licensees. The Superformance branded line of high-performance cars, including the roadsters, Grand Sport and GT40, are sold as a rolling chassis that can be configured for heritage or modern drivetrains. Enthusiasts still have the option to build a Superformance car from a kit, as well as purchase a turnkey Shelby branded Cobra. The cars have been sold minus engine and transmission with the selection, purchase and installation of the drivetrain being the responsibility of the purchaser. 11

T’S BACK!!!!

The Detroit Autorama returned in 2022, after a COVID related break that aused the 2021 event to be cancelled. While the powers to be (ISCA & MHRA) ave not released show attendance figures, the feeling by most of the particiants and attendees, was that car lovers returned in droves. Saturday was acked both upstairs and downstairs (AUTORAMA EXTREME)A lot of people hink that the Detroit Autorama is just hot rods or wild custom cars. If you are ne who think this you may surprised to learn that Detroit Autorama roster hows a very diverse range of automobiles, trucks, and motorcycles. 37

While the Detroit Autorama as a show is legendary, the real deal of the show, what most show goers come to see, are the custom cars and trucks, that have been built in secret for years, that show’s Ridler Award(RULES ARE CLEAR—NO PICTURES OF ANY KND ON ANY SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORM MAY BE SHOWN BEFORE THE VEHICLE ENTER COMPETITION FOR THE RIDLER). The RIDLER AWARD is named after Don Ridler, one of the show founders more than 60 years ago. The Ridler Award is presented to the best, first time shown anywhere vehicle, that comes from the select group of entries known as the GREAT 8. The Ridler is arguably the custom car world’s most prestigious award. For 2022, the Ridler Award winners are Rick and Patty Bird of Bellefonte, Pennsylvania. Their radically customized 1931 Chevrolet Independence coupe, affectionately known as the “Sho Bird” was this years big winner Rick and his brother own the trucking company their father started, R.W. Bird Trucking in Pleasant Gap, Pennsylvania. Rick and Patty have never shown any vehicle at the Detroit Autorama before 2022. For a first-time Autorama competitor to win the Ridler is quite an accomplishment to say the least...WELL DONE! The 1931 Chevy Coupe was built by Pro Comp Customs in Glenshaw, PA. The build took place over a two-and-a-halfyear period. Rick Bird decided six months into the build, to add twin turbos to the 509-cubic-inch big-block Chevy V-8 by Scott Shafiroff. One big problem popped up right away….where to put the turbos and all the plumbing that would be required. When the build originally started, the motor and transmission had already been pushed backwards, so the twin turbos wouldn't fit behind the engine, and with the radiator already in the back of the 38

car, The turbos could also not be moved to the back of the car, as some builders do. Bird and Harvey ended up deciding to mount the two 72-mm Nelson Racing turbochargers and all the polished and chromed plumbing right up in the front of the car, with the spools facing forward, making the turbos and their intake and exhaust pipes into key visual elements of the build. The Chevy is painted in PPG Vibrance Wineberry and Orange Glow over a variety of basecoats. Rick Bird said that when the 2021 Detroit Autorama was cancelled, that gave him and Pro Comp Customs another year to get the car dialed in and “just right.” Some of the things tweaked and done include a 5-inch chop and matching the trunk lid to the roof’s profile, and channeling the floor over the frame to lower the body. The team at Pro Comp hand shaped the grille, hood, hood scoop, fenders, running boards, side scoops for the rear mounted radiator, windshield frame, and taillight panel. The frame was also hand fabricated while Advanced Custom Chrome of Erie, Pennsylvania, was responsible for chrome plating. The car has a custom cantilevered front suspension that manages to combine a 1930s era solid front axle with a modern pushrod coilover shock absorber setup. Mickey Thompson tires are mounted on custom wheels by Billet Specialties. All in all, the “Sho Bird” is a stunning car, that has been built to an exceedingly high standard. The interior is fully custom, with a custom dash with a Classic Instruments instrument panel. The dash flows into a custom console. Look up in the car and there is an additional roof mounted console. Door panels and seats are also custom. Rick Bird was hoping to be a Great 8 finalist, but he understood that you never know what will show up to contend for the 40

GREAT 8 and The Ridler Award at Detroit. When Friday late morning rolled around and the GREAT SELECTIONS were being presented their GREAT 8 Flags, Rick couldn’t stop grinning as that flag was put into his display. On Sunday evening, when they were presented with the Ridler Award, Rick and Patty were on cloud nine as they say! One change that caught many seasoned veterans of the Autorama by surprise, the show’s annual Ridlers Ball was not taking place this year. This year Ridler organizers were unable to find a ball sponsor. Here’s hoping some company picks up the sponsorship of this great event within the event for 2023. For 2022, the Great 8 seemed to take a somewhat different turn with a much more diverse group of Ridler Contenders. None of the cliché picks like Camaros or ’Tri-Five Chevys. Instead there was one traditional 1933 Ford roadster, a Chevy coupe from the same era, a Studebaker, Pontiac, and an Oldsmobile with a couple of late model Mopars, and a hand built tribute to the 1950s Devin sports cars. One topic of conversation that always comes up, “how much did they spend to build that car or truck?” Vehicle owners going for the Ridler Award typically spend a half million dollars or more ( usually LOTS more) and devote years, to build their dream vehicle. There are rules, of course. No matter how wild the customizations may be (and some cars are actually built completely from scratch, rather than customized versions of production vehicles) Autorama is a car show at its heart; vehicles have to be functional enough to be driven under their own power onto the show floor and prove it when they check in at the show. YES... the “Sho Bird” 1931 Chevy Coupe won the ultimate prize of $10,000, but more importantly becoming part of a 42

very select group of vehicles who have won The Ridler Award. While the Detroit Autorama is known for the Ridler Award, there is so much more to the show. We will be featuring the main event in another feature story in the coming issues. For now...enjoy the Great 8 and the Ridler winner
