“ Ya Gotta know where to Go….The FUN Starts Here….”

Where Did all these shows come from??? Take a good look in this issue of the GAZZETTE, at the CAR SHOWS- EVENTSGEARHEAD STUFF section. 3 pages….3 pages!!! of things to do with your ride, primarily for the month of October. Just a few short years ago, that wasn’t the case. You had maybe 3 or 4 or maybe 5 things to do in October. Now multiple shows and events are competing for you to attend their event. The summer months were always busy with multiple shows on some days. As I look back through show & event flyers for June July & August, it was busier than October is now. What makes you go to a particular show or event? Is your car club headed to a certain one so everyone follows along…yup. Next time ask if you can pick the event the club goes to. See how much fun they have then. Does a show have more shade than another show and since your going to be sitting around a lot, that’s what drives you to an event..yup Does the show you choose give out more door prizes than the others and you want to “win” some stuff…yup. Maybe you choose a show because they give out more awards and that gives you a better chance to take home “some gold!!”…yup. I am going to throw you out an idea on how you choose your next event to attend. How about you pick out an event because it’s fun!!! Don’t worry about the trophy or door prizes or shade. Worry about whether or not you are going to have fun at an event. Isn’t that whats its really all about…FUN. The Beach Boys sang about it..”and she’s gonna have fun fun fun until her daddy takes the T-bird away”. All that other stuff is nice to have or get, but doing something for fun is what its about. Too many times I have heard and I am sure you have heard also, after the awards presentation is done, “I am not coming back to this show again!!’ That get said multiple times at a show. A participant didn’t get the $10 plastic trophy, so they scratch a show off their list for attending in the future.

I would contend that the best way to pick an event to attend, is based on the people running the event and the ones attending the event. People are what makes all this fun…not stuff. Yes we all like to win and be recognized for our hard work. I would tell you that that thumbs up you get from the guy in the next lane or along side the road is the best trophy you can ever get. Need shade at an event? Why not walk over to the guy with a pop up tent, sitting by himself. Introduce your self and you’ve made a new friend for life. You probably made his day too as he now has some company and so do you. Pick out a show that has a great drive getting to it and then back home again. We build our cars and then lots of time you park them. WRONG!!!! Cars like all of ours were meant to be drivin’ so get in…turn it on…and hang on as you mash your right foot to the floorboard!! You wont be able to wipe that grin off your face for a long time. It’s really all about the people in our sport, hobby, passion, obsession. Everything we do has a person attached to it.Thats what makes it fun…all of us. Quit grumbling, get off your butt and head out to the event of your choice and have the best time you’ve ever had. It’s your choice….

One of the BEST FREE Events in the Mid-South takes place on October 15th. The Midnight Rodders annual FALL COLOR CRUISE will fill up the day with nothing but fun for those who come on out and cruise some of the most scenic roadways in the Mid-South. EAST COAST TIMING ASSOC. has a new home!! Land speed racing coming to Air Park Next year there will be motor vehicles going more than 200 mph in the city of Wilmington and the drivers won’t even have to worry about speeding tickets. The Clinton County Port Authority on Wednesday approved the East Coast Timing Association’s (ECTA) proposal to hold four or five land speed racing events on the southern runway at the Wilmington Air Park, which the Port Authority owns. The Port Authority board’s vote was 5-0 to go forward with the proposal, with one member, Ed Kuehn, absent. ECTA co-owners Joe Timney and Keith Turk presented a Power Point presentation and answered questions. The air park’s southernmost runway currently is not being utilized. The racing events are expected to be a boost for the local hospitality sector such as hotels and eateries. Debbie Stamper, the executive director of the Clinton County Convention & Visitors Bureau, has estimated a $2 million annual economic impact on the local economy for a five-event season. ECTA has held its one-mile land speed racing events for 15 years at an airfield near Maxton, N.C. Due to a change in the lease agreement there, they needed to find a new location. The Power Point included a letter from the editor-in-chief of Hot Rod magazine. He said due to Wilmington’s centralized location in the eastern half of the United States, he would bet the attendance of riders and spectators at the racing events will increase “dramatically” compared to Maxton, N.C. Local resident Rob Jaehnig of Life Impact was instrumental in working with ECTA on the Wilmington Air Park prospect. Spectators for the ECTA racing events usually sit in their own lawn chairs in a designated area. Jaehnig said the air park runway is raised and the grassy areas are slightly lower, making for a good vantage point. The racing vehicles consist of a variety of types and sizes, the top speeds of which range from 75 mph up to 240 or 245 mph for the most highpowered models. The first event is anticipated for spring 2012. The admission price for a spectator is $10. Info in this story comes from Gary Huffenberger of the Wilmington News Journal – Wilmington OH.

For one weekend in May, there is more “music” in Music City than usual, thanks to the GOODGUYS. The Nashville Nationals brings out some of the nicest cars & trucks from near and far. More than a couple of these cool rides were trying to earn one of the “PRO’s PICKS” being selected by Bobby Alloway. All those high horsepower notes sure sounded sweet , whether doin’ the autocross boogie or cruisin lower Broad in downtown Nashville. Goodguys is going to do it again in 2012 and we are planning on attending this concert again! Love that music..rump rump!

Doin’ the “Beech Bend Boogie” in bowling Green. NHRA held the 9th edition of the HOT ROD REUNION at the historic Beech Bend Raceway. If you love the smell of nitromethane in the air and tearing your eyes up, then this was the place to be. Show & Shine, Nostalgia displays, “BIG DADDY” Don Garlits and the wildly popular “CACKLEFEST” make this deal one of our fave’s all year. Mother Nature didn’t treat everyone well with large amounts of liquid sunshine, but the NHRA got the deal done! The new Thursday to Saturday format seemed to be well received by all the participants. We recently got a call from Mark & Rhonda Delk of Columbia. They have started their next project…a 1966 Cobra AC. From what we hear, this one is going to be one slick driver. If you’ve ever seen their 1969 BOSS 302 Mustang, you know this one is going to be just as nice. We’re going to follow along on the build and we’ll share some pictures in upcoming issues.

Elsewhere in this issue is coverage of the GOODGUYS Nashville Nationals. As part of that event, there was a “ROAD TOUR” sponsored by GOODGUYS Rodder Rep Wayne Buxton that started on the East Coast and headed west to Nashville TN. The tour stopped at HOT RODS & THREADS Full Service Hot Rod Shop for a break and some cold drinks. Some of the local hot rodders came out to welcome the folks into town. FOR SALE: This is being passed on from David Ferguson of the HENDERSONVILLE CRUISE IN who got it from Tom Tucker of Hendersonville. Tom knows a guy who has a 1965 Corvette Convertible 4-speed that is a driver, upgrade-as-you-go or restoration project which is located in Danvers, Mass. He bought it from a man that had it in his garage since 1980. It has a 327/300HP, all numbers matching car, right down to the original carburetor, which he just replaced to get it running (he kept all the parts that he replaced). Car runs great and he just put new calipers all around. His idea is to sell it as a running, driving project car. He wants to get $25,000 for the car if he can. If you know of anybody interested who attends the cruise-in, this might be a deal to get an original numbers matching Sting Ray. He has not advertised it yet as he is still cleaning it up. Finish Line…. I LOVE the Nostalgia Top Fuel & Wild Wheel Standing Altereds, from the glory days of drag racing. The Funny cars were right up there too, but the guys sitting behind that ‘nitro filled bomb” really get it for me!!! Over time I have taken, collected and had sent to me, various pictures of this “glory time”. Here’s a small sampling….you can hear it now…”SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY”…”DON’T MISS THE 64 FUNNY CAR SHOOTOUT AT ORANGE COUNTY DRAGWAY”….yea…take a whiff of the nitro in the air….

One of my favorites…”the Surfers” puttin’ the “BIG BOYS” on the trailer at “the beach” (LIONS Dragstrip)!!! One of the greatest low buck, home garage race teams ever. Go ahead and GOOGLE their story…you WILL BE impressed!!
