“ Ya Gotta know where to Go….The FUN Starts Here….” “Just like that, a cruise nite is gone!” Cruise night’s are a privilege. Yes they are. Think not…think again. This is a tale of 2 cruise nite events. Both established for more than a little while. One came to be, then died. The other got put together, and then got taken away in a blink of an eye. Then the first one rose up from the ashes so to speak like the mythical Phoenix. I am touching on this subject as the cruise night scene in the Mid-South begins to taper off a little. There still are a good number to go to, so don’t sit home! Get your car out of the garage and drive there today. The 1st cruise I referenced was one of the original in Middle Tennessee…the Bay Yard Burger Cruise in every Saturday night in Franklin. It had humble beginnings as most cruise nites do, with a few folks “meeting up” at a sport to talk cars and get some chow. No different here. The cruise grew quickly based on word of mouth advertising. Before you knew it 200, 300 plus cars on a Saturday nite at the local drive in. Folks came from near and far to have fun with their cars. It went strong for a couple of years, seeing spin off cruises in other towns start to pop up too. Next thing we knew the cruise was moving. Headed to a mall for more room. Was there for a little while and then it moved across town again. Participation fell off to almost zero and it died. A lot of people were upset and didn’t understand why it died. Some know why now, but that isn't important now. Fact is it died. South of Franklin TN, in Coffee County the Manchester “Cruisin Downtown Style” cruise-in took off. Grew a little more each month. Year to year got better too. The group of folks putting the cruise on knew what the “car guys & gals” liked and took care of business. They were making plans to make the cruise even bigger with some great planning. BAM!!! City Elections took place and a new Mayor and council members get elected.

GEARHEAD GAZZETTE 2012
BAM!!! New Mayor says no more cruising downtown. No rhyme or reason, just no more cruising downtown. Just like that, a 200 car cruise nite is gone! Did you ever cruise at Manchester? If you didn’t you missed a good one! The good news on this one is the fine folks who put on the Manchester Downtown cruise have come up with a different location away from downtown and are re-building the cruise nite. Get out an support them…please Back to Franklin TN. Through a lot of hard work by some gearheads and some smart thinking by the manager of the Back Yard Burger, the Franklin “BYB” Cruise is back on every Saturday Nite. The attendance is good! Everybody’s happy. Could it disappear again? You Bet!! We Gearhead cruise our rides at locations that we don’t own. We go to a big parking lot or similar type area and hang out. When we get tired we leave. Here’s some advice on keeping that cruise nite going: > Clean up after yourself. Don’t leave trash and junk on the ground…throw it in the can. Did somebody next to you leave their trash because they’re a pig? Please pick it up this time and feel free to kick their ass when they come back next week. >Thank the cruise nite host. They don’t have to let you cruise there. It’s a privilege. Pretty easy huh?? For Clarification: Going forward starting with this issue, you wont see a “month” listed on the issue cover or contents page. I am switching over to a number for each issue. The Volume # will remain and then we’ll use a number designating the issue. Example: this month shows as Volume 12 – Issue #7. 12 being the number of years published and the issue # for the latest edition. It should be easier to keep track of, as I try but don’t always get each issue out at the same time each month. We’ll still post the new issues under the CURRENT ISSUE button on the website and the Back issues will be listed in order for your reference.

Recently Curt & Curtis Gibbs took a cruise around part of America, in a little thing called the Hemmings Motor news Great Race, which spanned 19 cities and four states. The Early’s Honey Stand Race Team of Spring Hill placed 26th overall and fourth in the sportsman division. 99 teams entered the June 23–July 1 cross-country vintage car race, which started in Traverse City, Mich.; and traveled through Canada, New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio; and ended seven days later at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Mich. Curt Gibbs, owner of the well-known gourmet Southern food and gift company Early’s Honey Stand, and his son Curtis drove a 1932 Ford Roadster in the race. Curt at the wheel and Curtis doing the navigation duty! The Vintage Car Rally Association also teamed up with the Great Race this year, to help promote and raise money for the fight against Autism. The Early’s race team separately raised $600.00 with a special promotion of EARLYS store (www.earlysgifts.com) products for Autism Research, the Great Race’s official charity for 2012. Congratulations to Curt & Curtis for a great showing and especially for going the extra mile and raising $$for a great charity.
Thanks to Ed Woodard & Rick Craze for passing this info along: Spoke with Bob Millard (ISCA) a short time ago and it was with a heavy heart that he shared that his longtime friend Bob Larivee, Jr. has passed away(Aug 26th) from an apparent heart-attack. JR was sixty-one. JR was a friend to many of you and Championship Auto Shows has been long-time SEMA HRIA supporter, and along with his father, Bob Larivee Sr. have done a tremendous amount for the industry. I share in your prayers and condolences for his family.

COMING IN 2013!!!
Snake & MonGoose Movie 2013 The untold story of how Southern California drag racers, Don "The Snake" Prudhomme and Tom "The Mongoose" McEwen combined with corporate giants to change the face of sports and ultimately became the most famous rivalry in racing history. Link:http://www.insideline.com/features/s nake-and-mongoose-movie-setpictures.html#non-makeotot60712149 Stephen Nemeth and Robin Broidy have acquired the life-story rights to drag racing rivals Don “The Snake” Prudhomme and Tom “The Mongoose” McEwen for the feature biopic Snake and Mongoose. McEwen initiated the rivalry in 1964 by adopting the complementary nickname “The Mongoose” to entice Prudhomme, already known as “The Snake,” into a high profile match race. The duo revolutionized professional drag racing in 1970 when they set up their own Snake and Mongoose Hot Wheels at Mattel. The toy company turned Hot Wheels, then just two years old, into the sport’s first major corporate sponsor.

HOW COOL IS THIS!!!
Kris Henderson of Thompsons Station TN ( just moved back!) got his ‘59 Jag featured (again) in HOT ROD magazine! Then he heads up to Wilmington OH to the new ECTA track and not only hits 200 MPH but goes faster!! Way to go Kris. If you’re ever driving around in the Thompsons Station TN area and you hear a LOUD growling noise…that’s just Kris’s Jag breathing heavy on another 200 MPH blast.
STREET MACHINE NATIONALS 2013??
Make plans now to attend the SHADETREE STREET RODS Annual Halloween Rod Run. This event has never got a lot of exposure…but it should!! This is a great multi-day event and you will have a ball! It’s open to all pre-48 rides. Check out the full page ad elsewhere in this issue and go have fun!!!
Will it really Happen in 2013?? The Social Media sites are buzzing these days with posts that say, Family Events (used to be Special Events back in the day), has signed a contract with the DuQuoin Fairgrounds in DuQuion IL, to hold a Street Machine National event in 2013. What’s being posted says it may be called the Street Machine Nationals Reunion and it will have Car Craft Magazine as the title sponsor. Rumbling are that it will be held on the third or fourth weekend in June 2013. These same social media sites are reporting the there should be an official press release out in Car Craft Magazine in a few months. Will it or won’t it happen?? Time will tell
If It’s loud… If It’s noisy…. IF It creaks when you drive it… It’s a HOT ROD!!!!

In our previous articles, we have washed, cleaned and used the clay bar to remove stubborn contaminants from the finish. Now we can deal with the minor swirls and scratches that can ruin a show shine. We now know that these are usually caused by residue in the cloths used in washing, waxing and cleaning of the vehicle.
Some of this can even be caused by using the correct cloth, but not switching to a clean one, often enough. Remember to use a microfiber cloth in all of the above applications and moving to a clean one often. A dozen cloths on hand is a good idea. There’s two Mothers Products for removing swirls and one to hide them. The basic one is the Pre-wax cleaner polish. This removes old wax and done before the clay bar. The other is a bit more aggressive, being the Power Polish. This is to be used with an orbital buffer to polish out the heavier swirls and minor scratches. Doing this one by hand is not recommended as it needs the increased action of the buffer to do its job.
The product for this is the Sealer Glaze from Mothers. This application fills the scratches with a clear liquid to leave a smooth surface. When light reflects off the finish, it tricks the eye by hiding the damage. They are still there, but invisible. A tip: Are the swirls and scratches in the old wax or the paint? In some cases, we cleaned the finish with the pre-wax cleaner and away they went.
Now, what about deeper scratches? A serious scratch caused by a tree limb or such can be determined with the fingernail test. If you can feel the scratch by pulling the nail across it, it is likely too deep to repair easily. Those are better filled and resurfaced by a professional. The problem is that if you remove the paint around the damage to lower it to the bottom of the scratch you create a new blemish and may get too thin in paint of the area. Mothers Polish does have a scratch remover in their line and it’s still for minor scratches. For example, the area around the door handles that suffer from rings on our fingers. These take a little more work than the swirls.
The other way to deal with swirls and minor scratches is to hide them.

Here’s a cool Chevy Coupe getting put together in Thompsons Station TN. Mark Kosiba is handling the whole build on his “un-chopped” Bowtie body. We’re digging the “straight 6” with dual carbs. Looking good Mark!!
Over in the far southeast corner of Indiana, right across the state line from Ohio (Cincy Area) is a true “hot rod barn”. Check out these cool rides being massaged on by Billy & Scott Webb. The 40 truck looks bitchin with the patina paint by mother nature. The “trad” look black & white interior is in another ‘56 Chevy post car. The yellow nomad is screaming for the “straight axle” treatment and a high winding small block with 3 pedal hanging, for some dragstrip action. Can you say “DRAG WEEK 2013”??

HOT RODDING IN THE MID-SOUTH Words & Picture’s by Ed Woodard Assisted by Hannah Woodard
Street rodding is starting to take off…… Where did the rod runs come from? Now the real question is how did the local rodders get together the first time? I think the center for the early gatherings probably started at the local drive-in’s like Shoney’s, then outgrew there due to limited parking. All this was going on & I was selling auto accessories for Rayco Racing Division here in Nashville, as was my friend Sam Compton. Things were going along pretty good but soon this deal was to end. I think it was getting a little too big in the location we were working. Hopefully I will remember to tell you a really goofy hotrod experience one of my buddies did at a local Shoney’s. You will crack up on this too.
Everything was set for a really big show except with the weather. The first snow storm hit on the Wednesday, opening night. Oh, did I mention it was also that dreaded day… the second report card came out. You know the one that always had lower grades. That all but killed our attendance but we recovered by the weekend thanks to added radio advertising. Attendance was pretty good by the weekend and we made a few bucks & learned a lot of good promotional lessons. Sam has really excelled in the field of sales and sales promotion. What a success story he has had. Good job Sam!
The annual Custom Car show at the fairgrounds was giving us a good shot at gathering street rod’s, so naturally trips were starting to be on every ones mind.. We were making a few over nite runs but nothing as an annual trip. I remember a trip to Memphis and another to Chattanooga before we turned our sights to East Tennessee. I think the person that really started the run to the mountains was Tommy Sanborn. The first run to the mountains was just a few weeks after the fair show and there were three participants in the show made that eventful trip. They were David Sellers, Lawrence Smith & of course Tommy Sanborn. That was almost 50 years ago & 2 of these rodder’s are still very much active in club activities and rod runs. Picture shown includes the Lawrence Smith Chevrolet coupe and a 1932 Ford from East Tennessee.
Shortly after the fairgrounds burned, Sam & I tackled a Teen Fair Promotion at the Nashville Municipal auditorium. It was a new kind of show where everything teen agers were interested in, was shown in one venue. You remember slot cars were the rage along with Fender guitars and hotrods, even fashion shows.

GEARHEAD GAZZETTE 2012
But the big thing was the fact that my future in the automotive aftermarket was starting to take shape. My income was starting to be directed from the distributor/dealer level to the manufacturer’s level. I was able to secure several leading brands of performance lines to sell for, including Appliance Wheels, Ed Cholakian Enterprises, Cyclone headers, Weiand and later ET Wheels. Also included was partial ownership in Advance Muffler in Memphis, where we distributed Appliance wheels to points in the eastern U.S.
HOT RODDING IN THE MID-SOUTH cont. We had a partner, Jim Kavenough, that was sales manager for Appliance who came by from time to time to check on the operation. Once when he was in, we went out to Lakeland to promote the store and that is where the trouble started. It seems that Jim had rented a Hertz Shelby Mustang & drove it to the track. It wasn’t long before someone put him up to making a pass. Everything was fine until a local hotdog in his class filed a protest & wanted him to tear it down, thinking he was cheating. Jim told everyone on the tech line it was a rental & showed the rental agreement. The protester could not believe he was about to be beaten by a rental car. Jim & I talk about that day every time we see each other.
Corvair van at Louisville Custom Show in 1966
Our Advance Muffler shop was selling a lot of custom wheels, mostly chrome reverse, not to mention putting dual exhaust on just about everything. What was neat was coming to work on Monday morning an seeing all the finger prints (& eyeball prints) on the showroom windows where we had over 100 sets of wheels on display. We stocked several thousand wheels an our trailer was always there every Monday afternoon with another load of wheels. Things were really good however I guess I was missing the Nashville scene & it wasn’t long before I was back in Nashville.
The real problem came when we made the return trip to the motel as it was a little cold in mid October in the mountains. I thought driving a roadster over during the daytime was pretty neat but the return was ice cold in that roadster. My wife & I often bring that trip up & that rather chilly trip. During this period of time I was getting more & more experience selling speed & custom parts as a manufacturer’s representative. While I had several key lines I found a great opportunity to join forces with McEwen–Cherry where we had access to a larger sales force with my position being as technical/sales support for his group.
&
later the Advance Muffler El Camino
Shortly thereafter I took a turn to operating a much under financed auto parts / speed shop in Nashville. I am sorry to say that speed shop, American Speed Sport just didn’t make the cut. But that starts another story in itself, but I think you will enjoy the wheezer story that originated in Gatlinburg in the next issue of the Gazzette that includes three of my good friends. A typical set of streetrod stories that will have you rolling on the floor….stay tuned…..
As for the Mid-South Street Rod Roundup in the mountains we were able to pull one single car from Memphis, owned by Bob Westcott. I believe we had about 25 cars at this 1966 run, followed by the 1967 run, where we had about 46 cars. The unusual thing about this trip is that we heard that there was a car show over in Knoxville so a rather large group of us drove over. As it turned out, we had more cars outside than were in the show.

WANTED: My name is Chris Woodside from Cincinnati, Ohio. For those who have been around Middle Tennessee long enough, you may know my father Bob "Woody" Woodside who is very active with the AACA, Pontiacs of TN, Buick & Cadillac Club. Long story short, my wife, son and I have permanently relocated to TN to be with my Father and my handicapped Uncle to be able to spend more time with them both and ideally enjoy your warmer climate to partake in some of the great car shows you have in and around the Middle TN area. In the last 30 days or so we have been looking for a home that would be great for our varied handicap & car needs-------but not really having much luck frankly. It occurred to me who else might know of a great home with land or garage space etc. for a fellow-car guy than those who are into old cars too! That said, if by chance you happen to be aware of a home or land for sale that would be great for "car people" in Williamson County, I would greatly appreciate any leads you might refer our way. We're fairly sure we'd like to have a minimum of 2 acres---------not to exceed 5 acres that will perk for a 5br or 6br home (crazy I know). Mostly level would be great for wheel chair issues etc. Again, please forgive any nuisance of this e-mail and I thank you in advance for your time/attention to this request. I've attached a few photos of my Batmobile Replica that I hope you'll get to see sometime soon in person! Thanks much. Chris A. Woodside 615.979.3058 (issue #7)

Finish Line….
Let’s take a ride over to the “Burger Queen” for a burger & chocolate shake! My guess is the guy under the sign is the business owner and he is proud of his new neon sign! Hanging that ”babe” up there at this time in life was “risqué” for sure…but oh so cool! Ok readers, where is this at? Email us and let us know.
Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely, in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting "...Holy Crap... what a ride!!!" 42
