“ Ya Gotta know where to Go….The FUN Starts Here….”
The “it’s not my problem” mentality is taking over More and more these days, I hear and I am sure you do to, complaints about how business’s are treating their customers. I’ll admit it, I am one of them complaining!
Trust me, I am the first guy that will tell you that these “old hot rods” we love and build, need some finesse from time to time. It’s not like an OEM built it.
There seems to be a mentality lately, at least in my opinion, for business to get our money right away and then forget about us consumers after the cash has been grabbed and stuffed in the ol’ cash register!
You lay out the $$$, have the work done, pick up the product or part, install it, and expect it to work….for a long time with normal maintenance.
Service after the point of purchase is getting harder to find. The “it’s not my problem” mentality is taking over a rapid rate. I am not just talking about “gearhead or hot rod” vendors, but all forms of business. It’s especially frustrating to me, when I see it or experience it in our hobby / sport. Don’t take me wrong here, I feel as the majority of the business’s in our hobby “do the right thing” if there is an issue after you get something. Companies strive for the perfect part, but sometimes something goes wrong. We don’t like it and neither do they. The difference is in how the issue is resolved. I call this INTEGRITY. The company that stands behind their product or work has it…INTEGRITY. The companies out there be they “brick & mortar” or “on-line” that do the “grab & go” as I call it, don’t have it….INTEGRITY. The larger the purchase the worse the NO INTEGRITY factor becomes it seems. Recent personal experience with this very topic is the fuel for this months column. When you buy or have a major assembly built for your specialty car, you do your homework before you lay out the big bucks. After doing your best to check a company, you make the decision to TRUST then doing the right thing for you.
4
GEARHEAD GAZZETTE 2012
When an internal component in the major assembly you purchased goes bad with less than 5 hours run time, you would think the company that supplied the major component would stand behind their work…WRONG!!! Then to add insult to injury as they say, the supplier thru innuendo's makes it sound like I purposely broke the part….WRONG. Here’s the integrity part now…it’s very clear to see that there was no abuse to the major assembly. It’s obvious that a component went bad. It happens. All the supplier had to do was say “ we’ll take care of this for you based on what we see happened”. You didn’t need a seeing eye dog for this one, trust me. Here’s the rest of the story. Your given a BIG Bill for the repair work, BEFORE you can pick up your assembly. That sent the old blood pressure right up there. In the end…what happens? Customer is held hostage and has to pay twice for his parts. Customer is not happy. Customer talks to his/her friends about what happened to them and who (ask me, I’ll tell ya who) did this to them. The company’s reputation is ruined. Logic prevails based on the info and reality of the broken part. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure out who’s wrong and who’s right on the issue. This ones easy to fix…Integrity

With Christmas coming sooner than we think, here are a couple of suggestions for the hot rodder in your house or life. Hot Rodding is about history and as we move the hobby forward you have to know where you came from. As I (Jimmy B) can personally tell you, these 2 books are absolutely must have’s for any hard core hot rodder. Once you open them up, its hard to put down. Do the Google thing and order them today. Pat Ganahl’s LOST HOT RODS chronicles the story, location and history of a number of cars that helped shape our hobby years ago. Pat has a great style of story telling that will keep wanting more.
There have been countless studies done to prove it, but virtually everyone knows that spending quality time with a kid is the greatest gift you can give them. And sharing your appreciation for collector cars is a great way to nurture their interest in a hobby that you can enjoy together for many years to come. Through the SEMA Take a Kid to a Car Show coloring book app, kids of all ages will be able to customize and personalize each car. We encourage users to visit www.takeakidtoacarshow.com to discover additional fun and exciting resources through this campaign. Scrapbook: A Collection of Tales and Images Compiled by the Editors of The Rodder's Journal. The Scrapbook is nearly 500 pages of vintage, never-before-published photography featuring hot rods, customs, early dry lakes, drag racing and more. We have thoroughly researched the hundreds of images in order to tell the story of each topic covered in the book. Some pretty interesting connections between various people and places were made as well, resulting in some old hot rodding mysteries being put to rest and some new ones created

Norm Grabowski, the man who literally invented the T-Bucket with his famous "Kookie Kar" has passed away.
Grabowski's creation launched hundreds of thousands of copies and even entire cottage industries over the years which is certainly not what the talented craftsman and hot rodder had in mind when he built the car in the early 1950s. The car's look was revolutionary for the time and featured a pieces from a 1922 Model T, the shortened bed from a Model A pickup truck, a Cadillac engine, and lots and lots of time and fabrication work to make it all look "right". Grabowski showed and drag raced the car. His success at the strip was so inspirational that Tommy Ivo himself managed to sneak into Grabowski's garage when he wasn't home to get measurements and details to built a 'bucket of his own to take to the drags. We all know what happened with that Ivo character! The car became literally famous as a member of the cast of the show "77 Sunset Strip" where it was driven around by a character named Kookie, hence the car's name. So influential was the car that it appeared on the cover of Hot Rod in 1955, Car Craft in 1957, and during the same year it appeared on the cover of Life Magazine in an issue where lots of space was devoted to both it and Norm.
Why would Life write a cover story about a hot rod and the rodder that built it? Because this single car ignited a craze to build machines just like it around the country. So often in this hobby, things can't be traced back to a specific point but more a gathering of smaller pieces onto trends and movements that drive things in one direction or another. That's not the case with T-Buckets. Ground zero was Grabowski's car, no disputing it. As the car got famous, so did Norm and he had an acting career for years because the car had opened the often tightly shut doors of show business to him. Grabowski was in many televisions shows and movies over the years. Along with his skills as a hot rodder and actor, Grabowski was a very gifted wood carver and his various artistic creations are highly coveted among hot rod collectors and enthusiasts. Norm was a hot rodder to the end working on a bunch of cool projects and being the generally awesome dude that everyone who knew him says that he was. Norm joins too many of the foundation level hot rodders that have left us this year. Above article courtesy Brian Lohnes as submitted to BangShift.com
Rest In Peace Norman! You will be missed. As someone said on the HAMB..... Hot Rod Heaven will not be the same with Norm hanging around up there....
Congrats to Tim Slone of Columbia TN. He was “hauling the mail” as they say up in Ohio at the ECTA meet in September. Think about the engineering and trial and error and LOADS OF $$$$$ that it takes to get you to hit “2 Bills” and then some. YES!!! Tim drives this car on the street. He works at the GM manufacturing facility in Spring Hill TN and has cruised to work in this bad boy more than once. Go Ahead Tim…hi the snooze button on the alarm…you’ll get to work in plenty of time.
Tim’s FACEBOOK Post! It's official! We've got our certificate for setting the land speed record at 206mph. In April we plan to DRIVE the Saturn and Kris Henderson's Jag to Wilmington Ohio for the "Ohio mile" and plan to bump our record to 220+. Hopefully we'll get David Freiburger to ride along with us also to show that this is truly a street car”

This article will explain the different types of wax, used by Mothers. Their original and classic wax is Carnauba. It’s a product from a tree in Brazil and used in the finest waxes available. They use the highest quality that is Brazilian Gold.
The next generation is SynWax which is all chemistry from a lab. The reason it gives a patent leather shine is that the molecules in this chemistry bind so tight it leaves a wet look shine. It’s called a synthetic Polymer.
The highest quality of wax is the Reflections Wax This product is a blend of Carnauba and Synthetic Polymer. It has a companion product called Top Coat. The top coat will give extra boost to be a show winning shine. For those that have been using the original Carnauba it is still the finest carnauba product in the business. It gives a deep shine with a lot of paint protection. For those that want to obtain the high luster show shine, they can try the liquid Polymers.
Mothers has added a new liquid polymer in the California Gold line. It has the same properties as the SynWax, but packaged in the same label as the Gold Line Synthetic Polymers has been around for a while, but Mothers waited for the technology to advance to a better product before they got involved. These three products are compatible and last about the same length of time. You can also use the Reflections Top Coat over any of the waxes for an extra boost for a show winning shine. An extra benefit of their liquid polymer is that it can be put on in the direct sun and left there for several hours before buffing up the surface. We demonstrate this effect at Rod Runs by waxing our demonstration hood the afternoon before and letting the show attendees wipe it themselves.
Remember to use Mothers Applicator pads and polishing cloths to hold down the swirl marks and insure that you get that award winning shine. Join the winners circle.

It’s Father’s day weekend in the Mid-South, so that means it’s time for the The NHRA Hot Rod Reunion event, at beautiful Beech Bend Raceway. This event quickly became a fan favorite over the years. The historic track with it’s grandstand style seating, under the canopy, being up close to the track to watch all the action adds to the excitement. Cool cars in the show & shine. Swap meet full of nostalgia parts. Vendors set up right by the race action. Oh yea.. Let’s not forget all those wonderful old Gassers, Funny Cars and the kings of nitro…TOP FUEL FED’s!! Add in the Saturday Night Cacklefest and it’s hot rod heaven. Didn’t make this years show? Here’s some of what you missed. Make sure to click on the link at the end to enjoy some top fuel action…cacklefest style….you can almost smell the nitro now.

HOT RODDING IN THE MID-SOUTH Who is this guy…Joe Klinkhardt ? My friend Joe Klinkhardt's name keeps popping in my stories from time to time so I thought I would let you in on who he really is and where he fits into the local hot rod scene. I guess it was about 1970 when he moved to Nashville after college, to take job with US Treasury Dept. Now for any of you who know Joe, can you ever imagine him as a Federal Agent, badge, authority & all. As you can imagine this was a dangerous deal for the world. You need to get him to fill in the blanks about that job.
I guess it was late 1971 Joe bought his first hot rod, a 1939 Ford Pickup, 289, automatic, 9" rear, etc. and he had to finish the interior & add the air conditioning & detailed it in the driveway of his mobile home in Antioch, a suburb of Nashville. He purchased it from Pete Strickland for $1,000 and a used motorcycle trailer! Sounds like a deal to me too! In about 1972, Joe makes the bad, bad mistake and moves to the Hermitage Hills area of Nashville where he met Tom Sanborn, Richard Jones, Jim McPherson, and Wild Bill Akin, along with myself. He joined NSRA and the Nashville Street Rod Assn. & traveled to local shows & Chattanooga, Atlanta, and Gatlinburg every year. He became especially close friends with Jim Mac and Bill Akin during this period and saw them almost every night and every weekend! Following is a little detail of Joe with our group in the early days as told by him. "Remember as if it was yesterday the first time I met Bill Akin in early 1972 while hangin' out at Jim Mac's. I was a fair mechanic, but had little experience with early suspensions. Ol’ truck needed kingpins, etc. and I wanted to remove 2 leafs in the front spring to lower it some... I mentioned this to Akin and he said "what time will you be home tomorrow night?" I said about 7PM, but I'm planning on making a trip Friday - he said "NO Problem!" - I have all the stuff and we'll be riding down Lebanon Road by 10PM!! Sure enough, it all happened and we've been the best of friends ever since! To this day, his mechanical ability amazes me and many others.
16
Words & Picture’s by Ed Woodard Assisted by Hannah Woodard
A side note - years later we were looking at old pictures and Jim Mac asked me "do you know who this is?" I said hell yes, that's Akin! Mac said how'd you know? - I said that's simple - he's got on the same greasy T shirt in the picture that he's got on tonight!! I have many, many Akin-McPhersonKlinkhardt stories of the old days, but unfortunately they can't be put in print! Then I was a "helper" during the time Mac converted the chopped '34 from a bitchin Hot Rod to the now popular Street Rod. Beautiful job - except we dyed the interior because he ran out of cash (or I always thought he was just too damn tight) - - BIG MISTAKE!! Then there was Gatlinburg!! Think my first trip was 1972. I was quite a "rounder" back then and really never fit the Nashville Street Rod Assn club profile to say the least. That's when I started hangin' out with the much rowdier Memphis club at Gatlinburg especially at NIGHT! Wow, what some good times, but finally it went too far and I was politely asked to resign from the Nashville Group, which I did. I remained friends with all of them and still do today..(ask him about his name on the wall and his famous apron)“ Nov. 1975 - moved back to to hometown of Hayti, MO. (200 miles from Nashville) and began a career in the agricultural farm chemical industry and in 1976 I sold the pickup at Muscle Shoals event in August...$3,500.00!! Here is more of the story as told by Joe Klinkhardt himself. "In 1976, having sold my pickup a month before, I went to Gatlinburg in my brand new 1976 Buick Electra and on Saturday night as all was getting "right" - I had five (some heavyweights!) passengers and decided to do the infamous "Burnout". The ole 455 wrung the driveshaft in two after I had hollered - "WATCH THIS!!!" I still live with this today and believe me, it is brought up often! Every time the late Jake Moran of Memphis would see me - the first words out of his mouth were "Watch this!!" The story continues as I finally found (after spending $10 in quarters - remember no cell phones then) a used driveshaft in Knoxville. Jim Mac being my old buddy was good enough to haul me on Sunday morning to get it. He knew I had a lot of "Jew" in me in buying stuff and strongly proclaimed - when we get there - buy the damn driveshaft and pay the man the $125!!!!
HOT RODDING IN THE MID-SOUTH cont. If you make him mad trying to cut his price - You will walk back to Gatlinburg and I'll never speak to you again - I promise! As you can see he knew me pretty well! I still remain good friends with all those mentioned and see them quite often. OH, the "seventies" of hot rodding - - what some memories".....Joe
Upon riding with Ed Woodard, in his newly finished 1930 Buick sedan, to Knoxville TN for the 1999 NSRA Nats South I got interested in the old Studebaker. Wonder where it was? Wonder if I could get it back? ....I wonder. Well at the Frog Folles I saw the owner & he said he might sell it. It didn't take long for me to decide so I bought back in 1999 (again through heavy encouragement from Ed and Norm) after car sat 17 years in Atlanta. Being somewhat deteriorated, I spent 2 years going through her the second time ! Hit the road again in 2001 and have put 55,000 on that same Stewart Warner since '01! She still draws a crowd even after all these years.“
Norm & Studebaker in Memphis
"In June of 1977 I bought the unfinished 1932 Studebaker President from the late infamous Norm Grabowski. Deal was initiated by Ed Woodard because he was already friends with Norm and I had only met him a couple of times at G'burg. I first saw and fell in love with the car at the '76 Tulsa Nats. Car was about 50% finished and paid $10,750 which was a hellova lot of money in 1977. I worked nights and every weekend and got the car streetable in mid August 1977 and started rolling. 1st show-Roaring 30's, St. Louis - People's Choice...
2nd show Frog Follies - People's Choice and the third show was Gatlinburg which ironically was the last year for this event.!! Many shows, many awards 1978 through 1981 - sold in May 1981 after putting 25,000 miles on the Stewart Warner, but that is not the end of my story about that 1932 Studebaker President".
Joe mentioned a Bill Akin who has lives in the Hermitage area. As Joe said he is a master machinist who usually makes most of his parts rather than purchasing them. Example of this is shown in the photo of his Willys Overland roadster that shows his polished stainless steel frame. What is really unique is the 1932 Ford style frame horns, as they are an exact match of the Ford frame horns.
Bill continues to dazzle most of us with his creations. A feature article is planned for early next year about Bill's life long projects. Ed Woodard....Comment Now......I wish that Studebaker was not being driven by Joe but still being driven by our friend Norm...We all miss you Norman.........

HOT!!!! That doesn’t even begin to describe the weather!! No doubt this was the hottest show that GOODGUYS has ever put on…literally. Temps were way past the century mark and add in the Ohio humidity and it was a challenge to keep cool for everyone. But hot rodders being who and what they are, hung out and had a good time in spite of the temps. So many cool cars to check out. Lots of Vendors, a swap meet and a lot of other fun things going on all weekend. That’s what make this GOODGUYS Show so great. Add in selection for the Street Rod of the Year and Street machine of the year and you have more fun than you can pack into one hot weekend.
Those Webb boys get around in their 56 Chevy Gassers. Billy & Scott were cruisin Columbus in this one all weekend.

Words by Jimmy B / Pic’s by Steve Longacre Art Director – POWERBLOCK Magazine / RTM Productions
As we showed you last month with another cool ride from Middle Tennessee, being located in this area of the USA, we have the good fortune of having RTM Productions in “our neighborhood” as some would say. Accordingly, some of the vehicles featured on the various RTM shows and POWERBLOCK TV come from the “local gearheads”. Such is the case with this cool ‘69 Charger, a.k.a. “The General Lee”! Paul Rigsby is the proud owner of this slick MOPAR. When he isn’t being the Police Chief for Nolensville TN. He is out cruising around with “The General”. Paul was part of the shoot, of his cool ride and also took his niece with him for the day. You can almost hear them Duke Boys given a Yee Haw yell!!! You’ve seen it on TV, but here are some shot’s, courtesy of RTM Productions and Steve Longacre, Art Director for POWERBLOCK Magazine. While the cars are being filmed, they are also being photographed by Steve for use in the on-line POWERBLOCK Magazine (www.powerblocktv.com/magazine/) . Here’s a few shots that you haven’t seen yet, that were taken “BEHIND THE SCENE”….

Column Repair
Story & Photos by Marty Crain
The third Saturday in May, in spite of a few clouds and scattered showers we had over forty street rods and classics roll into T&M Column Repair on Glenrose Ave. in South Nashville for the NSRA Appreciation Day hosted by State Rep. Al Morton, Terry Manlove and Mike Stewart of T&M. Safety inspections by Jim Proffitt, Art Bowen, James Beaty and Larry Redicker provided the annual anticipated going over for most that really look forward to having these guys given-em the once over and Okee-Doakee before hitting the road for the summer. Mike Stewart didn't shy away from laying out some groovy grub for all the participants, if you left hungry it was your own fault as they're was more than plenty for everyone. Door prizes, oh yea, everything from car covers to a big-ole mean bumpy stick cam shaft from Tennessee Speed Sport. Al Morton handed out a couple NSRA Merit Awards and the safety crew handed out some Safety Awards. The door prizes, awards and food is always great but the best part of this (I hope) annual event is the people. Anytime you can get together with old friends, make new ones and have a larger time just enjoying a Saturday afternoon laughing followed by a day of watching your odometer roll over several notches, it's been a great day. I hope these folks do it again next May, if they do you can bet I'll be there and I hope to see you there too!

WANTED: My name is Chris Woodside from Cincinnati, Ohio. For those who have been around Middle Tennessee long enough, you may know my father Bob "Woody" Woodside who is very active with the AACA, Pontiacs of TN, Buick & Cadillac Club. Long story short, my wife, son and I have permanently relocated to TN to be with my Father and my handicapped Uncle to be able to spend more time with them both and ideally enjoy your warmer climate to partake in some of the great car shows you have in and around the Middle TN area. In the last 30 days or so we have been looking for a home that would be great for our varied handicap & car needs-------but not really having much luck frankly. It occurred to me who else might know of a great home with land or garage space etc. for a fellow-car guy than those who are into old cars too! That said, if by chance you happen to be aware of a home or land for sale that would be great for "car people" in Williamson County, I would greatly appreciate any leads you might refer our way. We're fairly sure we'd like to have a minimum of 2 acres---------not to exceed 5 acres that will perk for a 5br or 6br home (crazy I know). Mostly level would be great for wheel chair issues etc. Again, please forgive any nuisance of this e-mail and I thank you in advance for your time/attention to this request. I've attached a few photos of my Batmobile Replica that I hope you'll get to see sometime soon in person! Thanks much. Chris A. Woodside 615.979.3058 (issue #7)

Finish Line….
.
At the end of the race, when you cross the finish line, it’s time to “hit the chute” “air out the laundry” and just slow that baby down. Here’s some cool shots we’ve found of just that…”releasing the chute at the finish line!
Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely, in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting "...Holy Crap... what a ride!!!" 38
