“ Ya Gotta know where to Go….The FUN Starts Here….”
“they’re just chunks of metal sitting there waiting for us” Is hot rodding about the cars or the people? Are we building cool cars with people or are we really building relationships and friendships with cool cars? Dare I say, to the horror of some of my fellow hot rodders, that this hobby, sport, disease for which there is no cure, is really about the people and GASP! Not about the cars. Now don’t think I have flipped out or gone batty…no no no! I still and always will go crazy over our cool cars and trucks. Checking out cool rides at a show or cruise is still about as good as it gets for me. Hearing that thump thump of a big cam or just enjoying the cackle of a Nitro motor warming up or at full throttle when the tree goes green, makes me smile and you can’t wipe it off my face! I will tell you, in my humble opinion, none of this can happen or take place without people. Very few of us, very few, can put together a whole car, completing every aspect of the build by ourselves. And really….do you want to do it by yourself? No, I don’t believe you do. It’s much more fun sharing the good times with another hot rodder, a friend.
When you are in your shop, and you complete some part of the build or modification that was just kicking your butt ( like that never happens to us right?), it’s more fun to HIGH FIVE your bud than the wall isn’t it? Even if you do the work by yourself, you like to share what you did with your hot rod buds. When was the last time you walked in the house and looked in the mirror and high five’d yourself. That ain’t happening, unless your really stuck on yourself. Going to a local show, national event or a cruise night, we tend to line up others to go together. It’s just more fun. Sure there are folks who jump in the car and take off, but 99% of the time, when they get to the event they meet up with friends. If they don’t meet up with anyone, I’ll bet they strike up a conversation with whoever they are parked next to. I know I have and will continue to do so, just because its more fun! Our sport is about people. The cars are cool, but without each other, they’re just chunks of metal sitting there waiting for us to get in and turn the key. I look forward to meeting more hot rodders in 2014…I have a high five I want to share with you
Jimmy B.

News broke at the 2013 PRI show that a new drag racing series called the “National Drag Racing Association” will have a run of events in 2014 for Pro Mods and mountain motor pro stock cars. The group is a consortium of track operators who believe that the cars present a viable product to have as “featured acts” at their tracks and as such they will host races with them being the “stars of the show”. Look for more info coming soon!

HOT RODDING IN THE MID-SOUTH Editor’s Note: It’s the end of the year and in this issue Ed reflects on some of our “hot rod hero’s” we have lost over time.
Cancer…that dreaded word… This month we need to reflect on that word and the damage it has done to so many. My sweetheart is recovering from the dreaded merkle cell cancer that could have easily taken her life a few years ago. Thank goodness it was detected in time & has kept it in remission since. Her situation worked out far better then my other two close friends, Norm Grabowski and Terry Manlove. It seems Terry was diagnosed with severe lung disease about 10 years ago from smoking, I am told. There was some discussions about a lung transplant ,but that was never performed. I remember when Terry quit smoking, as he gestured about being around smokers but never started back. His life was guarded as he followed his doctors guidelines pretty close ,as far as I knew. We would get together about every 3 or 4 weeks, and have dinner at the Long Horn near the shop(T&M Steering). He never complained much about his cancer, but towards the end, it was robbing his Woodard Historical Collection quality of life. I remember the day of his passing, as I had stopped by a mutual friend of ours, and was told Terry was on the way over to get a ramp installed on his street rod, so he could go the NSRA Nats. I tried to wait to see him, to tell him not to go as his heath was more important, but knowing Terry he was not going to let anything stop him. Later that day I heard that Terry had passed away as he was preparing to head over to our friends. 18

Terry was a very good person & a very, very good friend. He was always ready to help out a hot rodder who asked him for help. Here are a few pics of Terry from better times.

HOT RODDING IN THE MID-SOUTH cont. People will never be able to count all the ways Norm has influenced the automotive and hot rod scene. I can still remember things he told me and I am sure there are many that can say the same. But the really bad deal is Woodard Photo Collection what happened to him. The cancer could have been put into remission, if only he would have taken the advice of the doctors. Norm was the type of person who believed he was in control of everything. The doctor at the hospital told him exactly how the cancer would affect his tongue, and that it would swell up and cut off his air supply. The doctor told him he would require a temporary feeding tube, even if he had surgery. Knowing Norm and his home remedies like I did, not to mention his relatives telling him the doctors are just there to take his money, it was easy to see why he took the easy way out. In fact the doctor told him exactly what would happen and the time table. It happened almost to the day that he passed away, © Woodard Collection with Norm not allowing any help by the doctors. There were several unfinished vehicles Norm was wanting to build that really would have been knockouts. I am fortunate to have been given a project vehicle to build with his blessing. I look at it often when I play the Grabowski soundtrack. I have I am enclosing some pictures from lighter times with my old friend. Norm….Norman, where ever you are we miss you….. If any one that reads this is diagnosed with cancer, get help fast, from the best doctors available. Never allow anyone to talk you into “The Natural Way”.
Photo Collection2 of the 3 Henway owners NormWoodard & Homer Mcintire,
I think we should take a few minutes and reflect on those other hot rod heroes we have lost far to early in life. I cannot remember all so forgive an old man's memory…
Jim Talbot(MR Hemi), Felton Jarvis, Bob Maples, Ollie Perdue, © Woodard Collection Chuck Hardesty, Bill Sellers, Milton & Jerry Potter, Paul Speck, Bob Young, Jake Moran, Gary Freeman, Bob Amos, Glenn Smith, Denny Thelan, C.B.Davis Woodard Photo Collection and I am sure you can name many more. Make certain we all remember them during our holidays…and everyday.

Hot Rods, Muscle Cars, Trick Trucks and a whole lot more. What is it you ask‌why the Hunters Custom Auto Show in Nashville TN. Each spring, the finest vehicles in the Southeast region of the USA and some from other parts of the country, come to Nashville to be part of this great event. With more applications than space available, Linda & Johnny Freund have a hard time selecting all those that will be part of the show. Based on the 2013 edition, they selected the best of the best. Throw in some of the best Automotive Aftermarket companies, showing off the latest and greatest offerings, and other vendors, and there is something for everyone to enjoy. The other part of this show that is great, is the friendship and camaraderie that the exhibitors have with each other. Everybody is ready to help each other have a great weekend! It’s almost like a family reunion atmosphere. There are not many shows that have that. If you would like to be part of the 2014 Hunters show, make plans now for March 8 & 9. Go to www.huntersauto.com for more info and to enter the show.

1968 and the Muscle Car Wars were on!! There was no substitute for cubic inches and horsepower! A couple of the BIG players in the dealer wars, were Mr Norms Grand Spaulding Dodge in Chicago IL and Baldwin-Motion Performance Group in Baldwin Long Island NY. You could walk in, lay down your hard earned money, and drive out slammin’ the gears on one of Detroit's baddest muscle cars!
