Registration live for 2018 London Fabric Show Independent bed and mattress retailer Land of Beds has reached the finals of the Digital Entrepreneur Awards (North) 2017 in the Online Retailer of the Year category. The retailer was shortlisted from hundreds of businesses which submitted entries to the only national awards dedicated to championing digital entrepreneurialism and innovation. “To be nominated in the Online Retailer of the Year category is a testament to all of the hard work the web development team has put into driving this area of the business forward. “Collectively, we have risen to the challenge of moving with the times and embracing modern methods of how business is conducted,

with online sales being a fundamental part of our success,” says MD Mike Murray. Now in its 13th year, the Digital Entrepreneur Awards (DEAs) celebrate not only the highprofile websites and leaders driving online commerce, but also the silent heroes who develop the systems that change the online landscape and shape our digital future. A panel of eminent judges has been assembled and set the task of choosing a worthy winner – among them are Lawrence Jones MBE, the founder and CEO of web hosting company UKFast. The awards will be presented at The Principal Hotel in Manchester this month.

New chief marketing officer for Oak Furniture Land Oak Furniture Land has appointed Ruth Harrison-Wood as chief marketing officer to spearhead the company’s ambitious growth plans, which include rapid expansion across the UK and into the US. Ruth joins the UK’s largest retailer of hardwood furniture as it targets opening 10 new stores across the UK before the end of 2017. Ruth’s immediate priority is to help prepare the business for one of the biggest events in the retail calendar. She says: “To start with, I’ll be getting us in great shape for the January sales. I’ll also be analysing our audience segmentation and focusing on really understanding our customers. I’m looking forward to the challenge of answering the question: what does the customer need us to do to furnish their homes with more of our products? What is it that they really want?” The new chief marketing officer departs from National Express where she was

worldwide group customer and marketing director. She brings more than 20 years’ experience leading campaigns, strategic marketing, commercial ventures and business development initiatives in pharmaceutical, travel, transport sectors and home improvement/retail.

The deal will see the retailer sponsoring the UK’s biggest range of premieres and Christmas classics available to Sky customers on TV, on demand and on the move throughout the 2017 Christmas period. FN 345 Pages_AltMike3.indd 12

Harveys’ owner, Steinhoff, says: “Christmas is a key trading time of year for retailers and we want to keep the Harveys brand front of mind with consumers during this time. There is a seamless connection between Sky Cinema and Harveys, and through this partnership we hope to inspire shoppers with the extensive product line up that Harveys has to offer - putting the brand at the heart of great Christmas family viewing moments.”

The Furniture Makers’ Company launches 2018 School Design Prize fundraising campaign The Furniture Makers’ Company, the furnishing industry’s charity, is appealing for companies to inspire the next generation of designers and furniture makers by supporting its 2018 School Design Prize fundraising campaign. Launched in 2014, the School Design Prize raises awareness of the furnishing industry among school children by rewarding them for their design and technology course work. Every year The Furniture Makers’ Company asks companies and individuals to sponsor copies of a design textbook which are then posted to schools around the country for design & technology teachers to present to their most outstanding student. For 2018, the prize is changing to a copy of ‘Design of the 20th Century’ by Charlotte and Peter Fiell, published by Taschen. Dr Tony Smart MBE, Master of The Furniture Makers’ Company, says: “The long term prosperity of the furnishing industry depends on us attracting young people to pursue a career in this creative, vibrant sector. The deadline for donations is 31st January 2018. A set of two books costs £54 and donors can recommend the schools that receive the awards. Those wishing to sponsor a School Design Prize should contact Richard Ainsworth on 020 7562 8527.

Board changes at Minerva Following the resignation of Derek Hayes, Patrick Pattison, MD of Homestore Interiors of Swansea, has been appointed to the board of the Minerva Furniture Guild buying group. Derek was an original founder member, and over the last 28 years has greatly influenced the running and development of the guild. Minerva chairman Martin Lukehurst comments: “It is with sadness that Derek has left the board, and his contribution and camaraderie will be missed. We thank him for his service and wish him and his family well for the future. “We are delighted to welcome Patrick to our board, and his appointment, by the members, is testimony to his excellent business acumen and standing within the industry. He has strengthened the team, which has great plans for the new year. I’m confident that Patrick’s knowledge and strategic skills will benefit Minerva’s members going forward.” The Minerva team will be present at the January Furniture Show, on stand 1D47.

Judging panel for The Furniture Awards 2018 confirmed As well as the UK’s largest collection of domestic furniture suppliers, the forthcoming January Furniture Show will feature the fourth edition of The Furniture Awards. Created to recognise the suppliers of some of the most striking and commercially promising furniture and furnishing ranges launched at the show, The Furniture Awards shine a spotlight on the best dining, living, bedroom and décor products. The 2018 judging panel, chaired by awards co-ordinator, Furniture News magazine’s Paul Farley, comprises a wealth of buying and design expertise. New to the panel are Jacquie Benedukt and Debbie Watmore. Jacquie is the furniture buyer for the Colchester and Canterbury branches of family-owned department store, Fenwick, and has also worked at Queensway, ELF and House of Fraser. Jacquie takes a fashion-first approach to specifying products and pricing structures to suit her stores’ local audiences. Debbie Watmore is responsible for all beds, bedroom and cabinet furniture buying at Anglia Home Furnishings (AHF). Having joined the UK’s largest employee co-operative in 2004, Debbie has contributed significantly to the retailer’s impressive growth in the home furniture and flooring retail sector. Returning from last year are Malcolm Walker and Diana Celella. Malcolm is the director of buying for the UK’s largest independent furniture retailer, Furniture Village, and brings more than 45 years of retail expertise to the table. Malcolm is an expert in identifying the commercial potential of a range, based on its cost, material quality and supply chain, and boasts significant background knowledge of the trade and its players. Also returning to the panel is Diana Celella, an award-winning interior designer, and the president elect - due to become president

Clockwise from top left: Jacquie Benedukt, Diana Celella, Debbie Watmore, Malcolm Walker at the end of January 2018 - of the Society of British and International Design (SBID). Diana has a keen eye for design and a working knowledge of the industry across the residential, hospitality and retirement living sectors. “I’m looking forward to seeing how this year’s panel responds to the entries,” says Paul Farley, “from the shortlisting process through to on-site judging. The panel has more buying experience than we’ve ever deployed, so I’m certain the 2018 winners will truly reflect the cream of the UK furnishing crop.” Companies exhibiting at the January Furniture Show can enter their star range or product via the form in their online exhibitor manual. They can take a look at the 2017 winners here, and read more about why these entries succeeded in the March issue of Furniture News. The deadline for entries is Friday 8th December.

Design partnerships at January show The 2018 January Furniture Show will have two prestigious interior design partnerships - the SBID (Society of British Interior Design) and a first-time show partnership with leading textile association, BITA (British Interiors & Textile Association). The partnerships will strengthen the links between the show and the interior design sector. BITA will have its own stand and the partnership aims to raise the fabric and soft furnishings profile at the furniture event. The Fabric Pavilion branding will change to the Fabrics & Soft Furnishings Pavilion and will move to Hall 2, positioned at the top of the stairs from Hall 1 - a location which offers even more space to companies who wish to exhibit. BITA director Diane Harding says: “The British Interiors and Textiles Association is

FN 345 Pages_AltMike3.indd 16

delighted to support and promote the JFS Fabrics & Soft Furnishings Pavilion to its members and the Industry. Furniture, fabric, curtains, blinds and accessories are sourced together more than ever before and this will be a great opportunity to show the depth of variety in fabrics and soft furnishings available in the UK.” There will be a new layout and new exhibitors in the Fabric & Soft Furnishings Pavilion including Canadian-based window dressing specialist Quantum Textiles, JLS Fabric Designers which supplies famed Thevenon’s luxury fabrics and the Mark Wilkins Agency which supplies high-end Spanish and French fabrics, including exclusive brands Guell La Madrid, Les Creations De La Maison and Panaz. Details of the partnership with the SBID will be announced shortly.

New head of furnishing at Cologne fair organiser From 1st December, Matthias Pollmann will take on the role of division head for the fields of furniture, furnishing and design in the Cologne trade fair portfolio, one of show organiser Koelnmesse’s key areas of expertise, best reflected in January’s imm cologne event. “We are banking on his skills as an experienced director in trade fair management, who has distinguished himself through his successful work in a variety of projects and is already highly regarded by our customers as an expert strategist,” says Kölnmesse CEO Gerald Böse. He will succeed Arne Petersen, who managed the division from summer 2014 and is leaving the company for personal reasons. Matthias has known Koelnmesse since he carried out an internship there as a business studies student, before joining the company as a trainee in 2006.

After working as a sales manager for several years, at the beginning of 2012 he took on the role of project manager for furniture production and interior design fair, interzum.

ScS makes “good start” to new financial year ScS Group has seen LFL order intake up +2.9% for the 16 weeks ended 18th November 2017, and two-year LFL orders up +8.0% – chairman Alan Smith will report that the group has made “a good start to the financial year” in the company’s AGM in Durham later today. The core business has seen LFL order intake up +3.6%, and two-year LFL orders up +7.9%. Its House of Fraser concessions, which represented 6.2% of group order intake in the period, saw LFL orders decline -6.4% against “very strong” comparatives, with two-year

LFL orders up +10.0%. With the opening of a new store in Chelmsford on Boxing Day, the group will trade from 101 ScS stores and 27 House of Fraser concessions. “Whilst it is still early in the current financial year, the group continues to trade in line with our expectations,” says Alan. “We believe the group’s increasing resilience and value proposition will enable us to manage the continued economic uncertainty and take advantage of opportunities.”

Automatic PAP enrolment for NBF members All members of the National Bed Federation (NBF) are now automatically benefitting from a Primary Authority Partnership (PAP) with West Yorkshire Trading Standards Service. From 1st October, all members became part of the scheme which provides them with Assured Advice on product safety and fair trading. Previously, members had to register to become part of the PAP. Jessica Alexander, executive director of the National Bed Federation, says: “There are considerable advantages to this new arrangement. Before this latest change, members were invited to opt-in to the Primary Authority Partnership. Now, this will happen automatically. “It means all our members benefit from a consistent approach to interpreting regulations

FN 345 Pages_AltMike3.indd 18

relating to product safety and fair trading. They can also ask for advice and guidance on any queries within those two functions. This information is then shared across all local authorities so will apply across the board for all our bed manufacturers.” The PAP was set up with West Yorkshire Trading Standards Service over two years ago. At the same time, the NBF’s Code of Practice was awarded Assured Advice status by Trading Standards. David Strover, Trading Standards manager of West Yorkshire Trading Standards Service, says: “This service has a long standing Primary Authority Partnership with the National Bed Federation. We are delighted to support the legitimate bedding industry through offering advice and assurance.”

Online and in-store bed sales equal for first time For the first time, the same number of people are choosing to buy their new bed online as in-store - this is one of the key findings from the latest Consumer Research Report from the National Bed Federation. The research, carried out on a sample of 501 people who purchased a bed or mattress between February and August 2017, showed half of purchases were made in-store and half made online. This compares to 2015 when in-store versus online sales were almost 60%-40% respectively. The research shows the over 65s were most likely to purchase in-store (65.4%) and least likely (30.8%) to purchase online. By contrast, the 25-34 and 55-64 year-old groups were the most likely to purchase online at 55% and 56% respectively. 23% of purchases were made at the big national bed specialists, slightly down from previous report. Local independent bed stores ranked at 16.5%, down slightly from the previous 18%, whereas online retailers such as Argos, Amazon, Ebay and Very accounted for 18.6% of purchases, up from the previous 14.3%. Regionally, customers in the South East were the least likely to purchase in-store (34.8%) compared to the Northern Irish with 85.7% of purchases made in-store and the Scottish 65.1%.

Steinhoff UK Beds appoints new national sales manager Steinhoff UK Beds, manufacturer of beds and mattresses under the Relyon, Dunlopillo, Myers and Slumberland brands, has appointed Chris Francis as national sales manager, leading the team of area sales managers. Chris, having spent thirty years in the furniture industry, has a wealth of bedding experience. Having worked previously for both the Dunlopillo and Staples brands, he also has spent a number of years working in the International market for Latex International, and most recently working as a product consultant for Latexco. Home Inc. - Wholesalers of Premium Quality, Contemporary, Indoor Furniture Ranges to the Trade We understand that seeing a product in person is an important part of the decision making process for a retailer before they give up valuable floor space to a new range. To help with this, we have recently fitted out a new show van with samples of our existing ranges like the ones pictured here. Further containers of these products have arrived in our warehouse so if you are thinking of having something new on your floor for Christmas, please get in touch (using the details below) and we will try and rush through a visit to you. As we are a relatively new company that is growing rapidly we have taken the decision to use all our profits to bolster our stock levels, which means we may struggle to exhibit our products at this year’s January Furniture Show. Therefore please use our offer and let us come to you rather than you travel to Birmingham. Please keep an eye out for us next year however, as our plans for 2018 involve developing some exciting new ranges utilising innovative new ceramic surfaces that we will want to show off.

Blackburn’s Heritage Furniture is returning

Wardley, Heritage Furniture

to the January Furniture Show (stand 4D70, 01254 660777) with a promise of a striking new product range – and retailers will be able to sneak a peek before its official launch by signing up to the company’s dedicated notifications website. “If customers thought the Wardley – our best selling range this year – was great, then they’re in for a treat,” says MD Saeed Mohmed, whose team has responded to extensive customer and stockist feedback, as well as the design trends leading the way on the cusp of the new year, to bring a “truly unique collection” to the market. “We are pushing the boundaries of design and style, and introducing new wood finishes and colours,” says Saeed. “It’s an original concept, and we’re confident it’s going to be a real hit at the show.” Any readers interested in seeing Heritage Furniture’s new products before they are launched at the show can register their details at www.heritage.ontrapages.com for exclusive access. As well as early previews, registered parties will also be prioritised when the time comes for orders to be placed.

The NT collection from Kettle Interiors (01536 444960) has introduced designer Danish style without the price tag and it continues to be a strong seller in the supplier’s portfolio of oak furniture. Made for dining and occasional use, the NT collection was developed by Kettle Interiors to meet the demand for Scandinavianstyle furniture, bringing a modern yet relaxed feel. It was the first collection to feature a new lacquer finish that has now been adopted on key A/W 2017 introductions for the brand. With a full range of items, including sideboards, extending dining tables, bookcases, TV cabinets and more, the NT collection is available from UK stocks for immediate delivery across the UK. pricing than its predecessor, the LO collection from Kettle Interiors (01536 444960) has quickly become one of the supplier’s most indemand ranges. Exploiting a newly-developed almost-raw, lime-wash finish and chrome cup handles on a proven design formula, the LO collection delivers impressive value to homeowners wanting a modern look to their oak furniture. “The LO collection’s predecessor was one of our most established and highly-regarded oak ranges, so we already had a proven formula,” explains sales director, Simon Ainge. “With this new finish and lower pricing, we have made sure that the collection is just right for today’s home and strong sales indicate that we have the style, quality and value blend just right.” With over 40 items across living and dining, the LO collection has all the bases covered. The range can be accessed through Kettle Interiors’ leading wholesale, stockist and container supply packages. Shop display discounts are available for first-time orders.
