“We’re going a step further and launching a new programme of random Due Diligence testing of both member and non-member products”

We’re aware that there are other areas of importance as well as the products themselves – or at least there should be. For example, issues including employment, environmental concerns and health and safety. So we are considering how to address these areas better through the mechanism of the NBF Code of Practice, which is going through its normal review process during the course of this year. There will always be rogue traders, but at least the NBF is doing something positive to tackle the problem. By raising awareness and setting standards, we are giving retailers and consumers greater

It was to try and counteract some of this dishonesty that the NBF launched our Code of Practice back in 2014, and we continue to audit our members against the code’s criteria on a regular basis. Now we’re going a step further and launching a new programme of random Due Diligence testing of both member and non-member products. We will be purchasing around 50 products this year – a mixture of mattresses, headboards and bases - and subjecting them to detailed scrutiny against the NBF code criteria, which are

Arrayed across 11 halls of the Poznan International Fair showground (so somewhat larger than the four it occupied in 2010!), the event boasts the presence of most of Poland’s exhibition-level exporters. Of course, says Józef, there will always be those companies that wish to create export business in their own way, but “when they want to reach out, they come here”. Last year, Meble Polska celebrated a

major coup when manufacturing giant Black Red White returned to its roster. This gargantuan company, which has more than 8000 employees and operates from 22 production plants, occupies the exhibition’s largest stand, and its return (and repeat performance this year) is emblematic of the latest successful stage of the show’s evolution. “The show took a great leap forward in terms of exhibitors and visitors in 2016, when many leading companies that had been watching from afar chose to take part,” says Józef. In 2017, the organiser also invested a great deal in courting foreign buying groups and international visitors, and this, too, has had a noticeable effect. Official figures from this year’s event – which ran from 6- 9th March – posits attendance at 20,885 trade professionals, from 59 countries. In a post-show report, Józef writes that exhibitors “unanimously emphasised the high quality of the visitors’ profile, and they

but with remarkable growth in the number of Ukrainians and Russians attending, diversification is likely to be on suppliers’ radars. The product arrayed is overwhelmingly cabinet furniture – often coming RTA, in chipboard or solid wood, and generally contemporary in nature. Colours span every possibility afforded by the latest vinyls – concrete is popular, but there’s a more general leaning towards warmer wood finishes. There’s also a good number of upholstery suppliers, on top of a myriad mix of lesser product sectors. Also, with the Home Décor show at the fairground’s centre, offering everything from textiles, lighting and candles to sculptures, there’s a mild threat of product dilution facing the furniture-focused buyer. The addition of panel, kitchen and bathroom suppliers certainly lends Meble Polska broader appeal, but there’s a feeling that these additions might be merely fleshing out the core offer. But these are minor complaints, given the show’s impressive growth in size and reach. In terms of quality and presentation Meble Polska has stepped up significantly since my visit in 2014, and with growing interest from manufacturers and visitors in neighbouring countries and further afield there’s scope for further consolidation, despite fresh competition from Warsaw Home Expo. “We now have such a strong visitor base that it perpetuates itself by word of mouth,” says Józef. “Following our growth last year, this year’s edition has further confirmed that our model works. Everyone is happy out there, so I’m confident that we’ll have a strong show next year too.” The 2019 edition of Meble Polska will take place from 12-15th March – and this time, I’ve already pencilled in a return visit.

PHYSICAL RETAIL IN FOCUS AT TENDENCE Online retail gives the consumer a plethora of benefits – an exhaustive product range, detailed information, and the ability to order from the comfort of their own home. “Kleo offers superb quality and truly unique designs”

Influence dining table and chairs

Going in hard on soft industrial With an increasing number of independent retailers hoping to stand out from the crowd by offering greater product differentiation, Bluebone Imports’ bold, colourful (and often eccentric!) portfolio has never been more relevant. Furniture News asked the supplier’s business manager, Els Coolen, to share her thoughts on its comprehensive new collection, Kleo …

Bluebone has earned itself a reputation for unique design, principally stemming from the sourcing handiwork of its founders, Dale and Darryl Boal, whose partnerships with specialist Indonesian manufacturers have allowed them to challenge markeplace norms since 1997. Operating from offices and warehouses in Manchester and Belfast, Bluebone takes a dynamic and creative approach to growing its portfolio – as Kleo amply demonstrates. Kleo is more of a reframing of part of Bluebone’s portfolio than a new launch,

is a cut above many similar brands, a characteristic that is reflected by its higher price point. “For its price, it offers superb quality and truly unique designs,” says Els. Bluebone has been a key player in the evolution of the soft industrial trend in the UK. Since bringing it to the market in 2012 – with a focus on mango and steel in its Re-Engineered range, plus its Boatwood collection – Bluebone has expanded its offer to encompass a multitude of dining, living and occasional pieces. “For me, the soft industrial trend offers the loft or warehouse look to those that

combination of mango and steel. One stand-out example is the Influence dining table, which mixes clean white metal with reclaimed boat timbers (sporting original paint markings), plus perforated metal detailing. “Influence employs 100% dismantled boat timber from old, decommisioned Javanese fishing boats,” explains Bluebone’s

alongside the reclaimed boat timbers.” In fact, there is a bespoke flavour to the entire collection. Retailers can opt to buy Bluebone’s display models, or have the factory create a unique product in line with their demands. “This makes Kleo a perfect product for true retail,” says Els. But what happens when the product the customer receives is not what they’re expecting? Retailers – and suppliers – of cabinet furniture have been known to mis-manage buyers’ expectations, and surely the proportion of unique, re-used and individual elements employed in Kleo only increases the likelihood of a piece

a softer look, while the sanded-down boatwood acts as a highlight for the design. Chic: A small collection which incorporates metal mesh. Newport: Uses reclaimed teak as a base and accentuates the steel by adding large drawers or broad frames. Retro: Minimalist, creating a retro look through the use of simple, round tubes as frames. Edito: Where it all started – the original boatwood look, which is now copied everywhere. However, nothing beats the quality of the Kleo product – even in this range. Sakura: Reclaimed teak highlighted with intricate metal inlays. New – Pure: Uses the parts of boats that have been most exposed to the elements, so only slight flecks of colour remain. Set in seamless steel frames, this range creates a real focus on the timber. It won’t be available for a few months yet, but I loved the design as soon as I saw it. The name couldn’t describe it better – the frames are smooth and seamless, and the timber is just stunning. New – Aru: Bends the mesh steel into curves to create interesting shapes. New – Fokus: An office range that features a hardwearing steel desk with interesting boatwood and steel combination drawers to match.

“We offer bulk and container schedules for this reason, so retailers can offer customers the exact piece without having to wait for our stock to ship,” says Els. “Indeed, the sanded-down look proved very popular with buyers at the January Furniture Show, as it takes away the variations in colour.” In all, Kleo is an engaging range, with a colourful history, backed up by strong branding, and offers retailers wishing to take the soft industrial path a wealth of choice – from carefully-curated product schemes, to developing their own bespoke range. “We will be showing the new Kleo collections at the Manchester Furniture Show in July,” Els concludes, “alongside a few new ranges in reclaimed timber and steel combinations. “It’s a great time to be a Bluebone stockist!”

Hybed, from luxury bedmaker Harrison Spinks (0113 2055 200, www.harrisonspinks. co.uk), takes the hybrid mattress concept to the next level. The collection combines the latest technology with the company’s 178 years of experience in the industry to create a unique formula – the feel of a foam mattress but using natural materials, making it a highly comfortable yet more sustainable product. Hybed mattresses combine up to 14,000 supportive pocket springs with memory foam, latex, and a 100% natural sleeping surface of cotton and wool, topped with

Ultimate

inherently fire-retardant fabric. The pocket springs are made with ultrafine wire that is drawn in-house at the Harrison Spinks factory in Leeds. Each spring works completely independent from one another, keeping the sleeper’s spine in alignment and offering the utmost support. Combining thousands of pocket springs with the sleep-inducing materials of memory foam and latex serves to relieve pressure and offer comfort. Complementing these layers is a 100% natural sleeping surface made of wool – some of which comes from Harrison Spinks’ own 300-acre farm in Yorkshire – plus cotton to wick away any moisture. Combining all these materials creates one of the most advanced hybrid sleeping systems on the market. There are nine beds across the three ranges – Super, Nature and Ultimate – offering three levels of firmness to meet all sleeping preferences.

Lloyd Loom is a machine-woven material made from tightly twisted paper, reinforced down the middle of the twist with steel, and produced on a loom in a continuous strip which is cut and tacked to a chair frame. It does not have the blunt edges, creaks and sagging of cane, and can offer a good deal more comfort.

Making their mark This year’s Design Guild Mark holders have been revealed – 12 designs, catering for both the domestic and contract furniture markets, have been awarded the prestigious accolade …

Magnetic Copper Cube

Celebrating a diverse range of eye-catching and functional pieces, The Furniture Makers’ Company’s Design Guild Mark serves as a timely reminder of the strengths of British design. Now in its 10th year, the mark was developed to recognise the highest design standards in volume production by some of the best designers working in Britain, or those British designers working abroad, and saw the addition of 12 worthy recipients this year. The competition is judged by a panel of industry professionals hailing from the furniture, hospitality, commercial, retail and media sectors. Chaired by Rodney McMahon, this year’s panel comprised: Simon Alderson, twentytwentyone; Tom Pearce, Sebastian Conran Associates; Joanna Biggs, GA Design; Philippa Prinsloo, John Lewis; Rosa Bertoli, Wallpaper* Magazine; Pernille Stafford, Resonate Interiors; Barbara Chandler, The Evening Standard; Campbell Thompson, The Conran Shop; Rodney Kinsma, OMK Design; and industrial designer Terence Woodgate. They were tasked with ensuring that each piece of furniture met the criteria of excellence in design, materials, manufacture and function. Tom Pearce, creative director at Sebastian Conran Associates, comments: “The standard in design, thinking and making of this year’s Design Guild Mark was not

standard in design, thinking and making of this year’s Design Guild Mark was not only hugely inspiring, but left me feeling proud of our British furniture industry. The critique of the submissions by the panel was tough, so the awards are well deserved, and highlight that the level of design excellence is getting higher each year.” Simon Alderson, co-founder of twentytwentyone, adds: “The quality and diversity of the 2018 applicants for a Design Guild Mark provided for a wholly stimulating range of presentations. It was interesting to consider the longevity of historic designs alongside the contemporary.” Campbell Thompson, head of furniture & lighting at The Conran Shop, says: “The Design Guild Mark is a fantastic way to recognise design talent from the UK. It was great to see the diversity and quality of submissions and to hear

Noir Coffee Cart, Hugh Miller With his background in architecture, acclaimed designer Hugh Miller is uniquely placed to bring fresh ideas to a range of domestic and hospitality settings. The piece he has chosen to represent his portfolio is the Noir Coffee Cart, a wheeled cart and coffee set, which was based on a set of Japanese design principles.

“The first Japanese design principle employed here is An Absence of Noise, where extraneous details are removed to

“The third principle is A Contribution to Harmony, which means that a piece should not demand attention, but quietly await inspection, and reward the observant viewer with previously unseen detail. This is why all of the most interesting parts of the piece are hidden under the flush mounted tray”

“My design philosophy is to be rigorous, exhausting all possibilities, and retaining only the best ideas. I aim to design every piece so that each move is a considered decision – the result is a consistent design language, and a thoughtful, crafted aesthetic”

Exhibitions: Hugh has displayed his work at numerous shows over the years. In terms of recent history, 2017 saw Hugh’s Coffee Ceremony collection selected by the British Council for the British Pavilion at Cheongju Biennale, South Korea – and in March 2018 it was chosen for display at the Great Festival of Innovation in Hong Kong. In 2017, Hugh was also selected for Collect Open, at the Saatchi Gallery, London, organised by the Crafts Council, and to exhibit at the Tomoshibito Exhibition in Osaka, Japan. Also, his model Coffee Cart no.2 was displayed at the Millennium Gallery, Sheffield, as part of the John Ruskin Prize. This year, his coffee-making items were selected for display in the Carl Hansen exhibition at Salone de Mobile, Milan, while in May, his Noir Series went on show during London Craft Week as part of the Design Nation Showcase. Noir was also exhibited at Designweek Karlsruhe, Germany, in June. From July until May 2019, Hugh’s Dining Chair No.7 will be on loan to Manchester Art Gallery for its Nordic Craft & Design exhibition. Key works: Hugh’s most successful designs include: the Coffee Ceremony Collection, exhibited at Saatchi Gallery and the British Pavilion at Cheongju Biennale, in South Korea; his Coffee Table and Side Table designed for Benchmark Furniture; Gift box, designed for Savoir Beds; and two ArtSuite bedrooms designed for the IceHotel, Sweden.
