Magazine alliance gathers in Shanghai Representatives from the world’s leading furniture trade magazines came together in Shanghai in September for the 2018 AGM of the International Alliance of Furnishing Publications (IAFP). The association, which comprises member publications from 18 countries, aims to assist communications across the global furniture industry whilst sharing best practice publishing approaches and market insights, offering wouldbe exporters and importers access to a valuable network of specialist marketeers. This year’s AGM was hosted by the organiser of Furniture China, Shanghai UBM Sinoexpo International Exhibition Co, which is also the publisher of member magazine, China Furniture. During the show, IAFP members delivered a special presentation entitled International Perspectives, Global Opportunities, in which they outlined the activity and trends in their respective markets, as well as elaborating on their relationship with the Chinese furniture industry. As well as formalising internal matters, the meeting saw the appointment of Furniture News’ Paul Farley as the association’s general secretary.

German fair shortens duration In a bid to come “further into line with the requirements of the market and the relevant sectors”, Frankfurt exhibition Tendence, which was formerly a four-day show, will be held over just three days next year – from Saturday 29th June to Monday 1st July. “By talking to exhibitors, visitors, associations and our partners, we learnt that the global and particularly also the national retail landscape is continually in a state of flux and that we need to follow this transformation closely,” says Stephan Kurzawski, board member of fair organiser Messe Frankfurt Exhibition. “This is why we’ve been investing in Tendence and its content, and why we keep adjusting the profile to the needs of the market and thus also its sectors. In this way we are actively meeting the needs of the prevailing situation. What it means specifically is that we have now opted for a three-day trade fair, from Saturday until Monday, so that Tendence will have the profile which the industry needs.”

Sealy beds are handmade in the heart of Cumbria, on the edge of the Lake District. When you create something in such beautiful surroundings, it’s a constant reminder that you want things to stay that way. In the UK, we currently produce over 200 million tonnes of rubbish each year. This includes everything from commercial and industrial to household waste but only a percentage of this is recovered – the rest is sent to landfill. The impact in dumping everything into landfill areas is evident; air pollution, ground water pollution, soil and land pollution, landfill fires, financial costs and of course, health implications. So what does ‘Zero to Landfill’ actually mean? The ultimate aim of this philosophy is to prevent any waste material produced within an organisation going to landfill, which in turn offers a more sustainable route to resourcing for future generations. At Sealy, we have been making positive steps to change that over the past decade. Ten years ago only 15% of the waste produced in the production of our beds was either recycled or sent to energy recovery. Today, we are Zero to Landfill from site. Our goal is to make our nation ‘Deeper Sleepers.’ We believe that, along with our beds containing state of the art technology and unsurpassed comfort, the knowledge that your bed has been manufactured under a Zero to Landfill policy will help you rest a little easier.

A REFLECTION OF CHANGING CHINA Change is afoot in the world’s furniture manufacturing powerhouse, as China’s domestic market becomes more demanding with each passing year – but it hasn’t dimmed the international appeal of the four-day Furniture China exhibition, which concluded on 14th September. Paul Farley returned to Shanghai to evaluate the offering and activity across its expansive showfloor…

Furniture China’s founder and director, Wang Mingling:

“China’s economy used to be driven by three horses – export, the domestic market, and investment. Today, the domestic market is in the lead.” Wang describes an economy in which the quantity of exports – if not their value – is decreasing, thanks to new money at home. He’s bullish in the face of an impending trade war – “our Government doesn’t fear Trump’s tariffs” – but acknowledges a need to escape China’s dependency on the US, and the exhibition’s mission to engage new countries and levels of buyer. China serves as the UK’s principal furniture supply base, accounting for

Many of these are younger people – a visitor breakdown reveals that just 29% define themselves as traders, whereas almost half (49%) are designated as ‘designers’. Yet while it’s tempting to dismiss the majority of these as students and trade tourists, a closer look at their badges reveals a richer population of buyers, ecommerce entrepreneurs and serious trend hunters. The show has clearly recognised a shift towards a younger, more technologicallyaware audience in China, and delivers a programme of design-focused features that’s more comprehensive than ever. From product showcases to themed installations, awards and discussions, there’s a more vibrant, youthful feel to the whole affair (even flashmob-style breakdances when least expected).

introducing more contemporary collections, and finding that these strike a chord with China’s domestic audience as much as their existing global audiences. Market conditions may be changing, but Furniture China’s organiser continues to hone its model to meet its visitors’ myriad demands – at the same time aligning itself more closely with the demands and behaviour of the younger end consumer. In one of the fair’s seminar theatres, members of the International Alliance of Furnishing Publications (IAFP) deliver presentations outlining the trends in their respective markets, and elaborate on their relationship with the Chinese industry. It reinforces that whoever we are, and wherever we’re based, we all have some kind of relationship with China – and it’s shows like this that successfully inform and enable the businesses involved. and international bodies will continue meeting those rules for EU trade anyway. The thinking is that established and trusted relationships will facilitate frictionless trade and also enable businesses to export and import goods without border checks. And it is these close relationships that will overcome the Ireland border issue, according to the presentation. But the ball is now in the EU’s court, and what is strictly non-negotiable is the ending of free movement, leaving the customs union, ending the jurisdiction of the EU over the UK, and ending our annual contributions to the EU. There will also be a clause to allow the EU/UK to review any changing regulations. Says Theresa May: “We can negotiate a new relationship with the EU that works in our mutual interest. One that honours the referendum result, gives us control of our money, our borders and our laws. The process of withdrawal is complex, and it

Britain’s ability to remain competitive on a global platform is a concern for Tean Dallaway, financial director of the Airsprung Group: “Companies are being encouraged to think about more global trading after Brexit and to go beyond Europe - but we could all face problems remaining competitive. This is a wider issue than just rising raw material costs as a result of the weakness in sterling following the decision to leave the EU. “In just the past few years we have seen the introduction of auto-enrolment for pensions, there is talk of extra taxes to

Shakespeare Beds (www.shakespearebeds.co.uk), based in the Midlands, is a leading manufacturer of high-quality handcrafted mattresses, divan bases and headboards. Taking pride in the quality of its products, and offering a wide choice of open coil, pocket-sprung and foam-encapsulated mattresses, plus bases and headboards, Shakespeare Beds promises prompt delivery and competitive prices, backed up by over 30 years of industry experience.

Foam-encapsulated spring mattresses with luxury specifications proved an “outstanding” success for Sweet Dreams (www.sweetdreamsuk.com) at the Bed Show. The defined edge that encapsulation gives to the mattress is currently popular among consumers, and the launches from the Lancashire manufacturer – which is celebrating 30 years in business this year – provided it in plenty. The star of the show was Ramsay Tencel 1000, with encapsulated pocket springs, a Tencel soft-touch fabric cover, and unusual microquilting with a tufted effect. Ramsay is from Sweet Dreams’ Enchanted collection, which consists exclusively of foamencapsulated, pocket spring beds. With its open-cell structure, the layer of Reflect Foam offers maximum breathability, with tests proving that it creates four times more airflow than standard memory foam.” Dormeo is preparing for a bumper final quarter as it delivers display models to new stockists looking to provide their customers with something unique and exciting this winter, and hopes to expand on the Reflections range when the January

Although the past year has seen the industry face difficult trading times, Buoyant Upholstery (www.buoyant-upholstery.co.uk) has reported strong results and is again looking forward to exhibiting at the January Furniture Show. The company states that its new models – such as the Champ, Stella, Tizzy and Salute – were extremely well received at the Manchester Furniture Show, and that it is confident about the future. “It has been extremely difficult for everybody involved in the trade this year,” says MD Mike Aramayo, “but Buoyant is excellently placed to be able to ride out the storm and continue providing quality and value-for-money products, alongside excellent levels of service.”

As well as being comfortable, all Encore cushions are easy to maintain, and, thanks to their unique construction, which employs a foam core – which also allows the cushion to spring back to its original shape again and again – are lighter than comparable feather or fibre cushions. Fibreline (01535 606846, www.encorecushion.co.uk) produces the Encore family of cushions to complement its traditional range of foam, fibre and feather cushions. All are made to the highest

bring a new dimension to the furniture sector with the launch of a next generation seating concept at the 2019 January Furniture Show. The company’s concept-led soft seating brand is called Ayla, a collection set to challenge perceptions of furniture design with seven unique pieces due to be exclusively revealed at the show. MD Mark Dolder says: “Bazaar Group has enjoyed significant growth over the past 11 years, and now sees a need for accessible and innovative design-led soft seating within the UK bricks-and-mortar furniture sector. We know that soft seating is an under-developed category, so we are delighted to be bringing this exciting offer to retailers.” Launched in 2005, Bazaar Group was born when owner and creative director Jayne Dolder recognised an opportunity to evolve soft-fill contemporary seating, and began selling to her friends and family. Since then, the self-funded company has quietly been innovating within the soft seating category, enjoying significant growth. It has doubled its workforce every five years, and now operates from a 42,000ft2 commercial

Training: Fraser recently completed the final year of his degree in Furniture and Product Design at Nottingham Trent University (NTU), which culminated in an appearance at the New Designers show in London, where he was named runner-up for the Sainsbury’s/ Argos Home Award. As part of his course, Fraser spent a year in industry as a design intern with Willis & Gambier, where he saw his work taken from CAD drawings into manufacture, and finally into exhibition. He has also undertaken live briefs with companies including Isokon and G Plan Upholstery.
