T
he subject of celebrating British manufacture is a recurring and pertinent theme in this month’s issue, following my interview with Katie Mallalieu, founder of home furnishings and apparel brand Bailey Laine, and my recent visit to the permanent showrooms of Long Eaton for the Spring edition of Long Point exhibition. Established last year, Bailey Laine makes use of soft woolen material produced by its parent company, Mallalieus of Delph, from its UK base in the village of Delph just outside Greater Manchester. With a rich history dating back to the 19th Century, the manufacturer has developed a high level of craftsmanship and quality to its products over the years by utilising some of the best materials and skilled tradesmen that the UK has to offer. This strong heritage of UK manufacture is also apparent in the striking showrooms of Long Eaton, some attached to the mills which still actively produce upholstery products for today’s marketplace. When visiting Long Eaton in person, it is hard not to be impressed by the enduring nature of original furniture-making on our own doorstep, and how it has not only survived so long, but in fact thrived. Officially named the UK centre of upholstery manufacture, much of the upholstery produced in Long Eaton can be found in the best retail stores, design studios and hotels in the UK, and is also exported throughout the world. Bailey Laine founder Katie is a keen champion of acknowledging and supporting the long heritage of British manufacture – believing it is something we should be proud of, and it is clear to see why. With the marketplace expanding with strong competition from around the globe, it is vital that the UK market effectively promotes the many qualities that make its offering unique, so it can continue to flourish.

Lisa Artis Communications manager at the National Bed Federation, which organises the Bed Show (www. bedshow.co.uk) and the Bed Industry Awards.
Why we should celebrate award winners
E
very year we host the Bed Industry Awards at the Bed Show Gala Dinner and every year we hear and see the rapturous applause, the high fiving and the respect for the winners – but we also hear and see the surprise, the mumblings and the groanings. Award winners can be controversial - and we know the industry, at large, can often be bemused at the choice of winners. I think the same can be said for any industry. In most cases, awards are judged by a panel of respected experts from an industry. What’s important to remember is these judges are selecting a winner from a submitted entry, not as a company in the main. They are not judging on what a business has been achieving for the past 10 years or that it’s the leading player in the field. For the Bed Industry Awards, the judging is rigorous and time consuming. And, it must be stressed, totally independent. The judges spend time going over each entry and have specific criteria, agreed from the outset, so they can compare like-for-like, over the same timescale. What they are looking for is who has excelled in the past year and how they’ve done it – they want cold, hard facts that demonstrate and back up the entry. Good quality, clear entries are key, the judges won’t be fooled by a fancy presentation. Your entry may sing and dance but if there’s no substance to it, it won’t win.
And it’s not just the winners who can be controversial, the categories can be too. It’s never an easy decision to define a category and over the years we’ve added categories, lost some and tweaked them as the market evolves. It may not feel right to everyone but these conclusions have come about by looking at who enters the awards, why they’re entering and how they cross over. As with any awards you have to be in it to win it. Encourage your peers and your customers to nominate themselves. Awards are great at recognising talent, achievements and successes and are fantastic at raising a company’s profile. By winning or being shortlisted for an award, your hard work is being recognised by your peers as making a considerable contribution to your industry – almost like a seal of approval, and we all know how much customers like reassurance. The Bed Industry Awards have become a muchcoveted accolade among our manufacturers and retailers. Over the past few years it has been great to see how the vast majority of winners not only use it extensively in their marketing, with noticeable results, but also benefit from increased staff morale. Next time you’re at an awards ceremony, celebrate the winners. While they may not have been your first choice, be confident that the judges have carefully selected the right winner for the right award.

Oak Furniture Land opens þrst showroom in Wednesbury Oak Furniture Land, one of the UK’s largest retailers of solid hardwood furniture, opened its first showroom in Wednesbury on Saturday 20th May. Featuring a mezzanine floor, the 18,700 sq ft showroom is located at the Gallagher Retail Park. The new showroom has created seven new jobs and forms part of the company’s ongoing expansion plans. NBF introduces express sales training The National Bed Federation (NBF) has launched a shortened version of its established training programme for retail salespeople – the Express Sleep Sales course. Derived from its full Sleep Sales course, the express version is for those salespeople who choose not to record their weekly sales data or for those whose primary role is not in sales. The new express course excludes the sales data capture modules (SCRs), which record sales conversion rates and average order values. Upon completion of the Express Sleep Sales training, candidates will receive an Associate Certificate, whilst those completing the full course become graduates of the Academy and are added to the NBF Roll of Honour on the Sleep Council Sales Academy website. Aimed at those in the industry selling beds, the Sleep Sales Course is a thorough and detailed curriculum, focusing on providing candidates with sleep knowledge and how to use it effectively to build trust with customers. The Express Sleep Sales course costs £49, but is free to all NBF member companies. The NBF is also currently offering a training bundle offer - the Express Sleep Sales or full Sleep Sales course, plus Intro 2 Beds induction training for just £60.
durability. Nick Stokes, regional manager at Oak Furniture Land, says: “Following on from the success of our other stores in the Midlands,
we’re really excited to be opening our first showroom in Wednesbury. “The store plays a significant role in our expansion programme across the UK, which has seen the creation of over 500 jobs nationwide.” James Bidwell, partner at Quadrant Estates, says: “We are delighted to welcome Oak Furniture Land to Gallagher Shopping Park. This is the latest high profile national retailer to join an already impressive tenant line-up of other major brands at the Park, helping to reinforce its position as a dominant out of town retail offer in the West Midlands.” The store address is Unit PC2, Gallagher Retail Park, Axletree Way, WS10 9QY.
Tasty night for charity fundraiser Following the success of last year’s event, The Furniture Makers’ Company recently held a curry night fundraising event for its Yorkshire and Central region at the famous Aakash restaurant in West Yorkshire, raising over £2000 for the industry’s charity. More than 80 people, including industry colleagues, friends and family attended the drinks reception followed by a three course meal one of Britain’s biggest Indian restaurants. Guest speakers included Tracy Brabin, the Labour co-operative MP for Batley and Spen,
Paula Sherriff MP for Dewsbury, Mirfield, Denby Dale and Kirkburton and Baroness Sayeeda Warsi. Fara Butt, marketing director at the Shire Bed Company, and chairman of the region, says: “On behalf of the Yorkshire and Central region committee and The Furniture Makers’ Company, I want to thank everyone who attended and made this event a tremendous success. “This is one of many events that we have planned for the future to support our industry’s charity.”
Final call for Big Shots The Furniture Makers’ Company, the furnishing industry’s charity, is putting out a final call for teams to participate in its charity clay pigeon shoot, Big Shots. Now in its 23rd year, the annual fundraiser, which is generously sponsored by Furniture Village, is taking place on Thursday 8th June 2017 and will once again be held at the E.J. Churchill Shooting Grounds, off the M40 in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. A popular event, Big Shots is ideal for entertaining clients and suppliers, meeting up with fellow industry colleagues or treating staff to an action-packed day out. All abilities are welcome and there are prizes for different levels. Dr Tony Smart MBE, Master of The
Furniture Makers’ Company, says: “Big Shots is a highlight for many people in the furnishing industry and as always we’d like to thank Furniture Village and all of our other sponsors. “The support of the industry at events like these is really important to the Company – it enables us to educate young talent for the future, drive excellence and high standards for our industry and, of course, help people who have hit a tough time and need some assistance.” Sponsorship opportunities are still available. Those interested in sponsoring the event or entering a team should contact Sally Kent by emailing events@furnituremakers. org.uk or calling 020 7562 8526.

Current MD James Tate has accepted the global position of CEO at Ekornes owned IMG. From June he will work alongside the new MD to ensure a smooth and successful transition. Family buyout for Matza and Highgate Matza and Highgate Beds have a new ownership structure following a family buyout by brothers Mazhar, Asif, Tahir and Zahid Ayub. The brothers’ father, bed entrepreneur and founder of Highgate Beds, Mohammed Ayub, has now retired and his four sons have bought out members of the extended family to consolidate their business around Matza and Highgate Beds. Asif says: “We intend to continue and build on the great work done by our father over the last 40 years in making Highgate Beds and Matza successful bedmaking companies, which will benefit both new and existing customers.”
Asif is the MD of Matza, Zahid has the same role at Highgate Beds, Mazhar looks after finance, HR, systems and production and Tahir has responsibility for upholstery and wholesale across both bed companies. The businesses are based in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire. Matza concentrates on design-led, contemporary upholstered beds and mattresses whereas Highgate has a more traditional catalogue with both firms appealing to different markets. Asif added: “Highgate and Matza complement each other perfectly and together we will go from strength to strength.”

Backing British manufacture Launched at the start of 2016 in the village of Delph, Saddleworth, Bailey Laine is a home furnishings and apparel brand which manufactures in the UK using high quality wool. Founder Katie Mallalieu takes Victoria Noakes through the history of the business, its offering and its philosophy.

aving worked as a higher level teaching assistant for 11 years, and become frustrated with increasing government demands and the amount of time spent completing paperwork rather than teaching, Katie Mallalieu made the decision to quit the profession to join her family’s woollen textile manufacturing business, Mallalieus of Delph, in 2015. “My father is the MD of Mallalieus of Delph – which has a rich history dating back to 1890 – and when I made the difficult decision to leave teaching, he supported me in my desire to use the craftsmanship that Mallalieus has to develop a brand. As a result, Bailey Laine was born,” says Katie. Using soft woollen material supplied by parent company Mallalieus, Bailey Laine prides itself on creating high-quality products that are British made and make the ideal luxury addition to a home. The striking range of products includes throws – in herringbone, check and plain patterns in a variety of colours made from 100% lambswool, the ideal finishing touch for any sofa, chair or bed – plus cushions and lamp shades as well as limited edition seasonal products released at Easter and Christmas. Bailey Laine’s cushions are designed by two contemporary artists, husband and wife Victor and Lucy Sanders, whose work embodies Bailey Laine’s ethos of ‘Love your life, express your style’. Details such as envelope backs and contrasting colour buttons mean that a Bailey Laine cushion offers more than just comfort – the company aims for a contemporary and modern style of cushion with an artistic design. Since its launch in January 2016, the brand has gone from strength to strength, expanding lines and securing listings in exclusive independent stores across the country. “Bailey Laine is an aspirational company – we strive to produce innovative and exciting ranges that set us apart. Our aim is that our products should allow you to dare to be different. The quality of our products is paramount and all our products pass through a number of quality control checks. However, it is not just the quality of our final cushion, throw or accessories that is important to us at Bailey Laine, but also the quality of everything we use in order to achieve our finished product,” Katie states. “In order to achieve this, we feel it is important to source everything in

our beautiful country. We have strived to source businesses with the highest standards to provide us with all the elements of our final product, from beautiful cloth to stunning swing tags. In doing this it makes us proud to be able to say that Bailey Laine produces a British product in every aspect.” Bailey Laine is always looking for ways to address the needs of a changing market, and as such is currently developing new ranges and colour options, looking towards future pantone colour trends and trying to stay one step ahead. However, although Bailey Laine is keen to incorporate the latest trends into its pieces, it strives to maintain a unique style and a contemporary feel. “Getting to play with designs and ideas is so much fun and probably my favourite part of the job. The invaluable retailer and consumer feedback we receive will

also be taken into consideration during the design process and will mean that our new ranges are possibly our best yet. It’s an exciting time!” says Katie. Bailey Laine is also opening up new international markets, having recently shipped to Italy and Japan, with the Japanese market particularly interested in the company’s unique offering. Bailey Laine is continuing to work hard to export on a larger scale and to more countries. In the meantime, Katie’s aim is for Bailey Laine to expand further and to be present in more independent retail outlets. She believes in the importance of supporting local shops and that the company’s products are a great fit for these kind of environments. In addition, with Bailey Laine’s bespoke lighting offering becoming ever-more popular, Katie is keen to incorporate this service
into more stores sooner than anticipated so that is is more widely available. “Brexit has offered some uncertainty to the industry, and I think it will continue to do so until there are trade deals in place. I am hopeful, however, that it will encourage people to buy British and understand that paying a little bit more for something means they have a product that will last much longer, as well as support our own economy,” Katie states. “I am passionate about buying British and supporting all things British made. So many people are unaware of the beautiful products and craftsmanship that is available to them on their doorstep. I would urge everyone to research the product they are buying and find out if they can buy British before going anywhere else!” W baileylaine.com

This month, the homewares website in the spotlight is www.nest.co.uk – Furniture News explores the practices and philosophies behind the enterprise ...
Clickthrough > Nest Toni Anne Sanderson, MD
Why visit your website? What separates us from the rest is one simple thing – we’re not a big corporate machine, we’re a small but perfectly-formed independent which allows our service to be just as good as our products. We only sell products that we genuinely love and want to buy ourselves. We aren’t here to be fashionable or trendy - all of our products are futureproof, authenticly-licensed originals that are designed to last you a lifetime. We believe that we’re a celebration of talent and creativeness whilst being a true destination for design. How was Nest established? Our CEO and founder Christian Hawley spent a year travelling the world. Inspired by furniture and lighting designs from across the globe, Christian decided to embark upon the prospect of setting up one of the UK’s best interior design stores. On his return to the UK, he spent time researching and then visiting many of the world’s best design fairs that included Milan and Paris to source innovative furniture and lighting products. The first shop was then established back in 2002, which rapidly became a firm favourite amongst design buyers. Since then, we’ve grown from strength to strength and are now a highly successful independent multichannel retailer. Who is your e-commerce hero? I’m a prolific advocate of all things digital but Martha Lane Fox, co-founder of Lastminute.com is top of my list. She’s done so much since the early 2000s to move the UK forward in the digital sphere and her work towards creating a fairer internet is impressive.
FN 339 Pages.indd 20
It’s also great to see a strong female in often a male dominated world. Describe a typical working day No one day is ever the same – yep that old cliché! If I have a meeting-free day, I can make time for thinking, space to catch up on reading, forward strategic planning and generally be re-inspired by what’s going on around me. What part of your job would you prefer to avoid? Our team is extremely passionate – leading it can be both the best and most challenging aspect of my role. I’m a mother hen and I’m eager to develop each and every one of our team. However, I don’t give up easily and I’m learning that sometimes I do need to fail faster, learn and move on. It’s a work in progress but I’m getting there. What has been your greatest challenge to date? From starting out as a Saturday girl over 10 years ago, just to earn some extra cash to pay off a few debts – we’ve all done it, right! – I’ve now just stepped into the role of managing director. I’m having to push myself harder than ever. Whilst challenging, it’s by far one of my most rewarding accomplishments. How much do you invest in making your site more visible? Everything we do revolves around ensuring our site is visible, shoppable and inspiring. More than anything, our biggest investment is in time and staff. We have a customer-centric approach and it’s important to us that whilst being predominantly online, we offer a humanised service. What’s your take on how the
relationship between online and physical retail might develop? We’re striving to make our online experience as true to the physical as we can, with the benefits of online shopping. We’re not automated, and in most cases you’ll speak to the same advisor throughout your order journey with us, even across several orders. This is an important aspect in physical retail that’s often missed online. Online needs to reflect the service levels provided within physical stores - just as the physical stores are gradually incorporating digital aspects. What are your growth plans for the business? We have very ambitious plans and we’re aiming high. We’re evolving but we’re also mindful of remaining true to our core values and beliefs. What advice would you offer an aspiring e-tailer? Don’t forget the customer.

LONG EATON’S CONTINUED APPEAL Long Point returned to Long Eaton last month to present some of the best names in upholstery and cabinet manufacture – in addition to bedroom, dining and living room furniture players.
T
his year’s Spring Long Point was a success, with 20 exhibiting companies – made up of both established mainstays and new faces – presenting high quality pieces to the mid-upper end of the marketplace. The Long Eaton Guild has appointed Wade Upholstery, Cintique and Parker & Farr MD Simon Wade as its new chairman, following the departure of Matt O’Flynn who has left his position at Collins & Hayes. Simon extends his thanks to Matt for his contribution during his seven years as chairman. Part of Simon’s role will be to increase the awareness of the Long Eaton Guild within the local community as well as promoting the brand nationally, and also taking overall responsibility for the Long Eaton Guild Long Point exhibition.
David Knight (www. davidknightcollection.com) displayed its bespoke range of sofas, chairs and dining chairs using high quality components, which are handmade in the UK by time-served craftsmen. The company is characterised by the attention to detail and standard of its products, with a service to match. David Knight is also able to offer a reupholstery service. A stand-out from Iain James (0115 973 4481) was its Cluster Burr Oak circular dining table with Alexander side chairs upholstered in luxury Zoffany Curzon velvet. This was complemented by its Sideboard Credenza featuring square handles to create a refreshing but timeless setting. Each piece features bespoke satin and ebony inlays to bring an additional depth

The collection is available in bespoke sizes and in alternative timbers, optimising the sales opportunities for this range and the company’s other collections. German bedroom specialist Wiemann (01482 635283) celebrated a successful few days at the Spring Long Point exhibition, from its permanent space at Harrington Mill. On display was a selection of nine collections, ranging from entry level to top quality VIP and semi-solid – Berlin, Padua, Miami, Lyon, Tokio, Boston, Kansas, Sita and Amato. MD Simon Hewitt says: “We had an excellent show overall and received some great feedback and positive customer comments on our showroom and about the quality and value represented by our new ranges, Kansas and Boston.” Duresta (www.duresta.com) presented six sumptuous collections – from its most popular English Classics to its International Luxury ranges. Taking centre stage was the reinvention of the company’s modern collection, Domus, which consists of Metropolitan, Meridian and Brooklyn, and combines a range of sofas, chairs and footstools. Domus is a contemporary range and yet refuses to compromise on comfort. Thanks to simple structured lines, each piece is stylish and boasts a timeless look for a modern home. The new Birkin sofa by John Sankey
(www.johnsankey.co.uk) takes inspiration from the appliqué techniques and contrasting textures of iconic 1960’s style to create a confident statement of colour and texture. The nuances of Birkin’s design typify John Sankey’s playful take on upholstery and fabric selection. The warmth of Dovima Blossom with its many hued tones and textured yarns is contrasted with Dorian Old Rose, a soft velvet, to achieve an elegant finish. Comfort is at the forefront of John Sankey’s design objectives. Birkin was designed to offer a soft and yielding sit, achieved by a combination of pocket springs, feather and foam fillings, meticulously teased into place. The Birkin sofa is upholstered in Dovima Blossom, a new woven fabric in blush pink flecked with green and gold. The appliqué, button and piping detail are in Dorian Velvet Old Rose. Customers can choose to have Birkin upholstered in any fabric from John Sankey’s extensive collection or in their own fabric. Other exhibitors included Artistic Upholstery, David Gundry, Gascoigne Designs, Peter Guild, Steed Upholstery, Henderson Russell, Siren Furniture, Alexander & James, Ashley Manor, Carlton Furniture, Celebrity, Parker Knoll, Alstons and Westbridge Furniture. The Autumn Long Point exhibition will be held from 19th-21st September. W longeatonguild.co.uk

WADE’S CONTEMPORARY VISION Charleston and Joplin were two of Wade Upholstery’s most stand-out pieces on display at last month’s Long Point exhibition, and represent the company’s modern transformation.
P
art of an all-American inspired collection, Charleston is styled and upholstered in a relaxed fashion. It fuses a mix of leather, studding and velvet with the injection of an exclusive marble-patterned fabric resulting in the latest eclectic trends. Charleston is built the Wade way using traditional methods and has been meticulously developed by its team of master craftsmen and women, maintaining a high-quality, welldesigned product and finish. The fibreflex seat cushions paired with featherfilled scatter back pillows and soft round bolsters ensure comfort throughout the range. All products include a lifetime guarantee on frames and springs. Charleston is available in two sizes of corner units, two sizes of sofa and a snuggler with accent wing chair and footstool options. With its deeply-quilted arms and scatter-cushioned back, the Joplin range has elegance combined with a generous seated comfort. The range comes in a wide range of fabrics and leathers – plus wood finishes on the

feet – and its luxurious feather/fibre seat cushions provide extra comfort. Joplin is comprised of three sofa sizes and includes a matching snuggler. Featuring sprinkle seat interiors, feather-filled scatter cushions, solid hardwood frame rails which are glued screwed and dowelled, Joplin is made in the UK and, again, comes with a lifetime frame and spring guarantee. Fabric manager Alexandra Austin – designer of the Joplin range along with other new Wade ranges - explains some of its unqiue design features: “On the Joplin, a natural, rustic leather mixed with a neutral organic plain and shimmering copper velvets creates an eclectic base for the botanical design of the cushions – full of contrast and warmth. “The swatch then reveals a beautiful dark emerald green as this suited the design and is also the colour of the year – a fresh, bright buttercup yellow ready for entering the summer, and then a darker grey and royal blue for a slightly more masculine look.” W wade-upholstery.co.uk

This year, EFE continues to expand its global footprint by welcoming visitors from 141 countries including new buyers from Kosovo, Botswana, Belarus, Virgin Islands, Lithuania, Finland, Iceland, Argentina, Czech Republic and Rwanda. Exhibitors had the opportunity to meet up with these new buyers for networking and market expansion. The India Export Pavilion was made available with the main objective of providing local furniture manufacturers to do export to India, the world’s largest democracy. India is one of the fastestgrowing economies today, with its furniture market worth $17,822m. Buyers were kept busy with the wide displays of newest products and selections from Malaysia, China and the wider region. The show offered a full range of furniture with extensive selections of modern and contemporary styles for dining, bedroom, living room, office, occasional, children, outdoor as well as furniture fittings and hardware. The event has delivered yet again despite global economic uncertainties. This underscores the continuing appeal of EFE and how it remains relevant in the global furniture market. POSITIVE RESPONSE FOR MINERVA Following last year’s successful trial run at Stoneleigh Park, Kenilworth Warwickshire, Minerva held its rebranded members’ furniture and bed show again at this prestigious country venue.
M
inerva’s last event was held over two days with more than 50 exhibitors present, including several new suppliers to the group and a meaningful bed offer with some exclusive product. The show was well supported by the Minerva membership and potential members also attended as guests. Some of these were bed retailers interested in joining the group, following Minerva’s new initiative offering associate membership to this retail category. Despite difficult trading conditions, the management team at Minerva received some encouraging feedback on business achieved over the two days. The organisation would like to thank all

exhibitors and visitors for their efforts in supporting the event. The venue, with its central location offers good facilities and close proximity to the motorway system serving Birmingham and beyond. Sustainability is a key concern for the company, and as such it uses wood from regional, sustainably-managed forests and is proud to say that its entire production process is CO2 neutral. For the team, the Manchester Furniture Show provides the perfect platform to present this backstory, to highlight the quality of Rauch’s portfolio and all-importantly, to meet and develop relationships with customers. “The January Furniture Show in
Birmingham is always extremely busy on the Rauch stand,” explains a member of the Rauch team. “We find that Manchester actually gives us more time with entirely genuine retail customers, specifically focused on bricks and mortar retail presence. “Our presentation gives customers the chance to compare the quality and style differences that Rauch offer from an enormous portfolio.” To view the latest products from Rauch or to download article lists for any of its ranges, visit the company’s website. HIGHLAND HOME’S COMPETITIVE APPEAL Highland Home is the new division of Core Products aimed at retailers looking for ready assembled furniture at great value for money. Launched at the January Furniture Show this year, the Highland Home division sees the company expanding its product offer considerably with ranges developed especially for the independent furniture retailer. Utilising the skills the company has accrued over many years of supplying flat packed furniture to the trade – which demands high levels of production accuracy and bulk production – this new venture is the result of over two years of development, investment and planning. Supply is a key to success, so significant levels of stock are held in the UK to allow for deliveries within 14 days. Painted furniture is currently in demand, so naturally Highland Home has included several ranges within its launch collection. A new design of cabinet featuring delicately rounded uprights combined with moulded bracket feet is available in three luxurious finishes all at the same value-for-money prices. There is a choice of oak and grey, oak and white or all white. Many retailers want a painted dining range which delivers both style and price, and the new BD dining range delivers all this with a great casual living feel.
FN 339 Pages.indd 50
Pine continues to be a strong part of the Core Products portfolio, so it is only natural that it should feature within the new Highland Home ranges. The EB collection encapsulates all the features expected in pine furniture from the Edwardian era, such as elegant mouldings and skirtings on the cabinets and heavy cornices on wardrobes. The FB pine bedroom collection offers generous proportions at market-leading prices. Every piece is finished in an easyto-maintain antique lacquer finish complemented with antique metal cup handles. Customer research indicated a strong demand for a contemporary wood living collection with competitive price points, and this is what Highland Home has produced in its HD collection. The collection is ideal for casual, open-plan living, with a selection of living and occasional items complemented by a choice of vibrant colour infused chairs. Highland Home answers the desires of customers who want quality assembled furniture, and continues to push forward with impressive momentum. T 01738 630555

Vancouver Petite with Contract Chairs, Besp-Oak
The Hamptons, Besp-Oak
NEW DEVELOPMENTS FOR BESP-OAK Besp-Oak Furniture has invested heavily in making the supply of container stock as quick as possible by storing stock at its oversees factory, making lead times on direct container orders as swift as six to eight weeks from order placement to delivery. Using intelligent data analysis, over 750 leading lines have been selected, handmade and stored ahead of the new fast-track ordering system which launches in July. Unlike competitors with order restrictions, with Besp-Oak there is no maximum number of lines. The stock holding takes into account the increase in demand for painted furniture as well as oak. Over the past two-three years the company has noticed a change in trend, with more customers ordering items from the Vancouver Expressions and Chalked Oak collections, which allows customers to choose from numerous popular painted colours with golden oak or chalked oak tops. In light of the new painted trend, Besp-Oak has also introduced the Rosa collection, which features a new cornice design which took the company and its buyers by storm at this year’s January Furniture Show and Spring Fair. Customers can see all of the aforementioned collections during an open house event which is being held from 1925th June at Besp-Oak’s headquarters, which hosts 6 floors of products. There will be a tour allowing buyers to view thousands of trade gift, home and accessory products, including hundreds of new lines exclusive to Besp-Oak. The 32,000ft² trade showroom is 15 minutes away from the NEC and Birmingham International Airport and just a 10 minute walk from Coventry Railway Station. The house show coincides with the HTA plant show which is being held at Stoneleigh Park, Coventry. The HTA organisers are offering visitors a free bus shuttle service dropping customers conveniently by the showroom. Show visitors will be the first to see the launch of many new collections, including iron kadai fire bowls and vintage crates
FN 339 Pages.indd 54
and crate shop fittings. In addition to the new collections, hundreds of additional lines have also been added to existing ranges, including table lamps, retro models and glass art wall panels. Customers are urged to take note of the savings to be made when purchasing trade priced products from Besp-Oak. The Doors reclaimed collection offers feature wooden wall panels sold at some of the most competitive prices on the UK market. Besp-Oak boasts one of the largest wholesale storage and distribution depots which supports efficient direct deliveries and collections of all products, including oak and painted furniture, outdoor furniture, lighting, signs and clocks, vintage crates, giftware and kitchenware. To support Besp-Oak’s new, more efficient stock supply, the company’s data systems have been upgraded to the latest specifications, making Besp-Oak’s interactive trade easier than ever to use. Customers can place container and wholesale orders 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Stock figures can be seen by anyone and the entire Besp-Oak product catalogue can be perused at leisure. To view prices a quick trade application form must be completed. Lifestyle images and product shots have been a key focus for the company over the last year which is evident when browsing through thousands of inspiring products which are displayed in the showroom and held in stock. Besp-Oak’s on site facilities include free parking, Wi-Fi and catering with refreshments served throughout the day during its open house event. The team endeavours to be on hand to offer assistance and guidance when required. Those wishing to attend should call Hanna Albrighton on 02476 632148. W besp-oak.com

BEDS & BEDROOM •••
Lineare, Matza
Design-led bed manufacturer Matza (01924 458699) is making luxury hotel style more accessible with its Lineare headboard and divans. As part of the successful Hotel collection, Lineare’s clean lines and sumptuous padded headboard offer retailers a contemporary range for consumers wanting modern luxury. The headboard comes with a range of base options including a floating divan on legs, standard ottoman and standard divan with two or four drawers. It is available in an array of 35 fabric and colour combinations to suit all styles and décor including velvets, crushed velvets and linens. Matza MD Asif Ayub says: “Inspired by boutique hotel style, we wanted to bring that concept to the everyday home and Lineare offers instant impact and contemporary clout. The design combined with a wide range of fabric options make it easy for anyone to get the look.”
First introduced to the public at this year’s January Furniture Show, the Florence four-poster children’s bed demonstrates Hyder Living’s (01484 531000) drive to develop products that offer something out of the ordinary, going above and beyond standard bed portfolios found up and down the UK. The Florence four-poster single bed arrives in at 3ft-wide, and crucially proves that style-focused sleep solutions needn’t be reserved for adults alone. As a result, it is already being rolled out to retailers country-wide, with curves meeting straight lines to form a naturally ergonomic design. Crafted using high-quality solid wood material and sitting on a sprung slat base, Florence is then treated to a smooth, painted finish in crisp white, priming it for inclusion in a child’s bedroom space.
FN 339 Pages.indd 60
Active Response Care, The Shire Bed Company
Offering retailers a comfortable option for people with busy lifestyles, The Shire Bed Company (www.shirebeds. co.uk) has developed its second generation Active Response collection, including four mattresses with performance finish covers. The 3000 pocket sprung Active Fresh comes with climate and moisture management and Active Care contains a Tencel finish. Active Breeze optimises the body’s natural thermoregulation through smart fibres and the 2000 pocket sprung Active Cool features moisturewicking properties. The Shire Bed Company produces beds, mattresses and divan bases and supplies nationally and internationally to major retailers and the contract sector, including education, care and hospitality.
Biny Hyder, director at Hyder Living, says: “We’re really proud of our latest introduction, the stylish and innovative Florence four-poster, and I’m delighted to report that we’re already receiving positive feedback from retailers seeking an alternative to the standard kids’ single. Florence is every little girl’s dream, and its four-posted nature makes it the ideal bed for personalisation with bright fairy lights, or even curtains to create a private den. “Florence allows your child to put a personal stamp on their room, without compromising on the quality assurance levels that emanate from all Hyder Living products. This four-poster single is also quick and easy to assemble, saving on the precious commodity of time and therefore a purchase that ticks boxes for children and parents alike.” For almost 40 years, Hyder Living has
Florence, Hyder Living
been a go-to source for key players in the bed and mattress industry, operating from its 40,000ft² warehouse in Huddersfield, but with the introduction of products such as Florence, Hyder refuses to stand still. Innovation and quality have come together in harmony – an ethos that can be found throughout Hyder Living’s 2017 stable.

Marlow, Gallery Direct
As a result of Gallery Direct’s (www.gallerydirect.co.uk) commitment to the growth and development of its furniture collections, the company has worked hard to maintain the high quality of its Marlow collection whilst offering better prices. Savings of up to 27% have been introduced across the range, and for an ongoing basis. Marlow may appear similar to other products on the market, but the high quality at its value-for-money prices sets it apart. The collection of bedroom, dining and living furniture features solid oak tops with a subtle hint of white in the grain, combined with a soft grey painted finish, to create a collection which will enhance any interior with its modern lines, classic appeal and rustic feel.
Biscaya, Wiemann
Bluebone’s (0161 330 8959) popular Mango Lounge range has been extended with a feature headboard, bedside and chest, creating a retro look in the bedroom. Solid mango is a sustainable timber, and features a warm finish showing the striking grain of the wood. Living room options include a solid mango range and a range with metal/mango combinations.
Admiral Ortho 2000, Sweet Dreams
Biscaya, launched at the January Furniture Show by German bedroom manufacturer Wiemann (www. wiemannuk.co.uk), mixes contemporary glass and solid oak doors to create a strong design statement. Simon Hewitt, MD of Wiemann’s sole agent in the UK and Ireland, Litmus Furniture, says: “Biscaya was really well received at the January Furniture Show and is proving to be a retailer favourite thanks to its simple, clean design. Not only does it provide excellent, streamlined storage facilities, but with its stylish looks it really catches the eye.” The Biscaya range is available with sliding robes in widths from 250 up to 400cm. It also has a large selection of bedside cabinets and dressing units which allow consumers to co-ordinate their bedroom furniture with the wardrobes. As well as strikingly-designed products at competitive prices, Wiemann also offers full delivery and installation service to stockists.

Sweet Dreams’ (01282 830033) Pocket Spring collection of divans has historically always been a bestseller, and remains the case this year. Comprising 15 divans, the collection offers a wide range of specifications, making it one of the most versatile collections offered by the Lancashire manufacturer. As well as differing spring counts, the Pocket Spring collection also offers a choice of tops such as soft knit and damask, a choice of covers with features such as aloe vera, copper and No Stress, and various fillings including memory foam, gel and ultra firm fillings. Ultra firm fillings have made a success of Admiral Ortho 2000, a high-count pocket spring bed with a traditional tufted damask top and firm fillings to both sides of the springs. The lined divan base comes in matching damask, plus there are twin wheel castors and a choice of platform or sprung edge top. Offering three kinds of ottoman and diverse drawer configurations, Admiral comes in five sizes, from 90 to 180cm.

HYPNOS CELEBRATES MONTHS OF MILESTONES Award-winning British bed manufacturer Hypnos is celebrating after a successful few months, which has seen the company win a host of new accolades and added several awards to its collection. This, alongside important charity initiatives including work with Magic Breakfast and Young Enterprise, has highlighted Hypnos’ commitment to producing quality products, offering a high level of customer service, and supporting the education of young people throughout the UK. Hypnos has held a Royal Warrant since 1929 and supplied ethically-made and sustainable beds and mattresses to some of the world’s leading retailers and hotels. Whilst growing and expanding internationally, the manufacturer has remained focused on corporate social responsibility and sustainability, and it is one of the world’s few carbon neutral bed makers. Topping the recent list of milestones was Hypnos receiving the prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise for International Trade in the 2017 honours list. A respected accolade only granted to those who demonstrate the highest levels of excellence within their field, Hypnos scooped the award in recognition of its substantial growth and commercial success in international business, as well as driving strong year-on-year growth in overseas sales and export activity. Adding to its spate of achievements, the manufacturer was recently crowned Bed Supplier of the Year 2017 by Associated Independent Stores (AIS), for the third year running, as voted for by AIS members. Furthermore, the bespoke bed manufacturer also won the Gold Standard Award for the fifth consecutive year, underlining its dedication to high levels of customer service. More recently, Hypnos was also awarded the Corporate
FN 339 Pages.indd 64
Social Responsibility Award by the RAF Benevolent Fund for its support in redeveloping Princess Marina House, the charity’s respite and care centre in West Sussex. Hypnos also showed its support for its charity partner, Magic Breakfast, in January with a donation of £20,000 to help provide over 90,000 healthy and nutritious breakfasts to children to improve their concentration at school and kick start a productive day. Finally, as part of its ongoing commitment to the local communities in which it operates, Hypnos has recently collaborated with a Young Enterprise team of students from Princes Risborough, mentoring them whilst they created their now award-winning business which creates concrete dragon eggs. Chris Ward, group marketing director at Hypnos, says: “It is a true honour to have received these prestigious awards and it’s fantastic for our hard work to be recognised in this way. As a family-run business, our family values, the quality of our offering, the ethical production of our beds and our commitment to corporate social responsibility is recognised around the world and we’ve had a fantastic start to the year and are looking forward to many more milestones to come.” W hypnosbeds.com

Sealy delivers restful sleep to allergy sufferers The world’s number one bed brand, Sealy UK, is committed to delivering the best night’s sleep to all its customers no matter their specific requirements or needs. This year, Allergy Awareness Week focused on eczema, a skin condition that greatly affects the sleeping habits of those who suffer from it. The condition can be triggered by many factors, including allergens and a damp sleeping environment. To avoid any flare ups, it’s important that sufferers sleep in a setting that is cool, dry and most importantly, hypoallergenic. Selecting a suitable mattress – as well as choosing the right bedding - is an essential part of managing this condition, and there are many technologies available to avoid eczema aggravation during sleep. Most mattress coverings are made from a variety of fibres that can harbour dust mites, causing allergic reactions such as sneezing, watery eyes and wheezing. Neil Robinson, sleep expert at Sealy, recommends selecting a mattress that includes ‘smart fibres’, helping to keep the sleeping environment fresh and dry, retaining the hygiene of the mattress and also reducing dust mites. Smart fibre technologies that are included in Sealy products include Purotex microcapsules, which release friendly bacteria into the mattress’ fabric to reduce mould and moisture. They are a 100% natural solution and include an active bed cleaner and odour neutraliser. As a unique, patented technology, Purotex microcapsules also
have the following attributes: they are probiotic and therefore encourage the growth of microorganisms with beneficial properties; they undertake a natural process called pro-life, which replaces traditional biocidal treatments; and they neutralise and clean up to 100% of dust mite allergens. Another smart fibre technology used is Tencel fibres, which help keep individuals cool and dry throughout the night. The fibres are hydrophilic and optimise moisture absorption with sexcellent cooling properties, ensuring the sleeping area remains dry. In addition, its inherent natural properties do not give bacteria a chance to grow. The fibres are also 100% organic, extracted from wood pulp from sustainable tree farms and are therefore environmentally friendly. Adaptive technology is also used in Sealy’s products, keeping the user comfortably cool and dry throughout the night by using the body’s energy to accelerate moisture wicking, evaporation and cooling. This also helps to enhance the hygiene and durability of the mattress. In addition to this, many Sealy mattresses feature adaptive technology, an intelligent textile, which changes passive textiles into those capable to respond dynamically to environmental changes – such as temperature and moisture level.

This enables the company to offer wide choice and variety, both of style and finish and seat pad options. Customers can choose from Woodman Chairs’ own range or, if they have their own style, the company offers a bespoke service tailored to individual needs, whether for complete chairs or frame only. The company believes that offering choice at realistic prices and with workable lead times is the critical edge that all its customers and retailers need to meet the demands of the discerning buyer. Price is but one factor in the mix. Painted furniture has seen a strong upsurge in recent years and is still trending well. Woodman Chairs offers a vibrant choice of both contemporary and more traditional styles, in oak or beech but often with options of oak or fabric pads either unfinished or painted.

The Trucksmith (www.trucksmith.com) range of low-loading Luton vans has proven to be a popular choice among furniture retail and manufacturing companies. The LoLoader name has become popular with customers, and Trucksmith put the current vehicle on show on the Renault stand at this year’s Commercial Vehicle Show at the NEC. To demonstrate its capacity, Trucksmith loaded its clear Perspex-sided demo Renault Master LoLoader at the show with a Renault Twizy – which left plenty of room to spare. The vehicle attracted a lot of interest, not least because of its vital statistics. It is designed around a platform cab principle, with the body wrapped around the base vehicle, with each depending on the other to provide the vehicle’s structural integrity. It is created using aluminium as standard rather than composites, which significantly reduces body weight, is stronger and achieves a payload of 1300kg, with the driver, fuel, spare wheel and toolkit taken into account. The rear loading height of the vehicle is just 450mm with air suspension applied, and fuel consumption averages at 27mpg fully laden but can be significantly more on a run. It does not require a specialist operating licence, and comes with a four-year or 100,000 mile warranty. Trucksmith is a Renault approved converter partner, and was recently voted Van Converter of the Year 2017 by readers of What Van? Magazine. Its customers include small and large fleets in the manufacturing, delivery and retail sectors.

Haskins refurbishment sale, organised by Lynch Sales Company
Lynch Sales Company (www.lynchsales.com) is a trailblazer in sales promotions and has developed its own procedures and marketing material. According to Lynch, this has become the ‘gold standard’ in the sales promotion business, often copied by other companies but never replicated. Lynch continues to develop and add new material and methodologies, hiring and training high-calibre co-ordinators to run its events. This year Lynch has had 88% repeat business

and continues to receive high demand. Lynch plans and execute promotional sales for retailers who wish to refurbish their stores, relocate, close or simply wish to generate additional sales and increase their market share. The company has a plan to take a business wherever it wishes to go. Lynch Sales recently launched its Sale in a Box – a consulting plan for smaller retailers that would find the cost of hiring a Lynch coordinator uneconomic –which has achieved a positive response.
