Jackie Bazeley MD of the British Furniture Manufacturers (www.bfm.org.uk)
Flying the flag for British manufacture
A
s Brexit negotiations get under way, our latest figures confirm that furniture and furnishings displaying the Union Jack carry an increasing amount of clout overseas - particularly in non-EU countries. The British Furniture Manufacturers’ (BFM) first quarter figures for 2017 show that compared to the same quarter last year, exports from the UK to the EU rose by 33% to reach £269m, while exports to non-EU countries rose by 19% to £320m. The US remains the main destination for UK furniture exports, even though volumes in the first quarter declined by more than two per cent to £130m. This is followed by the UAE with a value of £17m. France overtook the Irish Republic as the major destination for UK furniture exports to the EU. Total furniture exports to France were up by 94% to £80m. Exports to the Irish Republic also rose by 9% to £68m and for products such as upholstered and nonupholstered seats, bedroom, dining and living furniture, as well as mattresses and kitchens, the Irish Republic maintains its grip as the major export market. These are encouraging figures, especially at a time of such uncertainty, and would suggest that there has never been a better time to ‘fly the flag’ - which is why we are rebooting our Great British Furniture (GBF) campaign. We believe members who are proud to tout
the British Tricolour do great business overseas. Many of our members are increasing their export trade and while some may say that a hard Brexit could potentially damage trade in Europe, opportunities further round the globe are opening up – the USA in particular is showing a huge appetite for British product. Indeed, over in America, the once-great High Point Market – previously a must-do for any major manufacturer – seems to be making a return as British companies once again take space at the prestigious show. This year alone, trade shows in Milan, Cologne and Paris have proved successful for British exhibitors. For example, the BFM took 13 companies, including members, to the I Salone del Mobile, a furniture show in Milan under the DIT Trade Access Programme (TAP). Visitors from more than 165 countries attended the Milan Design week, bringing the total number of attendees to 340,000, with 68% from outside of Italy. Our GBF campaign was first launched over 10 years ago and has seen a number of high profile names sign up and promote the campaign, advocating British-made furniture. It is now free to all BFM members. There is no doubting the cache of the Union Jack when it comes to selling British-made furniture abroad. In negotiating the uncertainty that lies ahead, it may well prove our greatest marketing tool.

Big Shots raises £23,000 for industry charity Industry hotshots turned out in force last month at the annual clay pigeon shoot fundraiser Big Shots and helped raise around £23,000 for The Furniture Makers’ Company, the furnishing industry’s charity. The annual fundraiser, which is now in its 23rd year, was once again held at E.J. Churchill Shooting Ground in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. 33 teams, made up of representatives from across the furnishing industry, took part in this year’s fundraiser. Attendees delighted in a day of traditional clay pigeon shooting as well as some novelty stands, including axe throwing, paintballing marksmanship and, everyone’s favourite, the blunderbuss. The Furniture Makers’ Company would
Survey’s concern over Brexit and London living A survey of design graduates from across the UK, which exhibited recently at New Designers in London, has revealed concerns about the cost of living in London, where traditionally the majority of creative jobs are, paired with an uncertainly over the impact of Brexit on the creative industries. Asked about where they intend to work post-graduation, of the 27.5% who intend to set up in London, 79% cite ‘more exciting creative opportunities’ as the reason. However more than 2/3 plan to avoid the capital, with over 1/3 saying that the most significant factor was that it is ‘too expensive to work and live in London’. Questioned about Brexit, only 12.8% believe that the UK’s creative economy will benefit from the government’s deal while 63.3% did not. Another 23.9% stated uncertainty to the effect it will have. Despite concerns, the survey also revealed confidence in the talent of the UK’s creative workforce. Asked about the secret to the country’s strong creative sector, worth £87.4b to the economy each year, 28% credit ‘excellent creative education in universities’, most of which are represented within New Designers each year. Many also believe that ‘we have an entrepreneurial creative culture’ (20%), ‘a design-led businesses culture’ (21.3%) or that ‘the UK is an inherently creative country’ (21.3%).

Land of Beds crowned National Retail Family Business of the Year Bed and mattress retailer Land of Beds has been crowned Retail Family Business of the Year at the national Family Business of the Year Awards 2017. Land of Beds took the top national retail prize at London’s luxurious May Fair Hotel on a night that celebrated the best of British family business. The winner, whose Cheshire showrooms in Frodsham and Helsby stock 80 different types of mattresses crafted by Britain’s top manufacturers, overcame UK-wide competition in its sector. Praising the “progressive family firm that impressed at many levels,” the panel of expert judges from the world of business – advised by family business representatives – declared Land of Beds “worthy winners of this national accolade”. Impressed by Land of Beds’ entrepreneurial insight and the way that family members have been instrumental in devising and implementing the strategic plan for the business, the judges added: “Rather than rely on the past and their family heritage, Land of Beds has evolved significantly since the early days and embraced new ways of doing business, as it has now become a multi-channel retailer.”
“On behalf of our Family Director Team and all our colleagues at Land of Beds, we would like to thank all the Family Business United judges,” says Mike Murray, MD, who also paid tribute to the hard work and tenacity of all the awards finalists. “Our business has been passed down through three generations and we are thrilled that our granddad and founder, Harry Murray, can see today just how far we have come on our journey to become Britain’s best family retailer – one that has invested in nationally accredited training to ensure that all of our staff are able to provide advice on sleep and wellbeing, as well as helping customers to make informed choices through their specialist product knowledge.”

Bed Show recognised in trade awards The National Bed Federation’s (NBF) annual Bed Show has been shortlisted in the Exhibition of the Year category for the Trade Association Best Practice Awards 2017. Now in its eighth year, The Bed Show will take place from 19-20th September this year at the Telford International Centre. Offering a unique mix of both British bed manufacturers and component suppliers, the show remains the place to be for buyers and commercial specifiers who are looking for the latest products and developments in the UK bed market. The NBF Bed Show team will compete against other trade associations at the annual Trade Association Awards which recognises and promotes best practices among associations in all sectors across the UK. The ceremony is now in its 15th year and is supported by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). Jocelyn Shein, events and sponsorship manager at the Trade Association Forum Ltd, says: “The standard of entries this year has once again been very high and we appreciate the hard work which the NBF and the Bed Show team put into the submission. It has certainly been inspiring to read about the project and we wish them the best of luck for the awards!” The award winners will be announced on Wednesday 12th July at Drapers Hall, London.
consumers will be impressed by the standards and attention to detail within our product quality and aftersales care.” Pete says: “I am delighted to be joining LaZ-Boy at such a crucial and exciting time for the business in this country. “Alongside ensuring consistent quality and carefully structuring our aftersales provision, one of my main focuses will be continuous improvements in supply chain and manufacturing. “I want to ensure we always aim to be ahead of the field when it comes to reputation and reliability.”
UKAS investigation confirms NBF’s cause for concern An investigation by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) into testing procedures at FIRA International has revealed that there were ‘issues which needed to be addressed’. The investigation followed an official complaint by the NBF regarding blind tests carried out by FIRA in August 2016. The NBF told UKAS: “In our opinion many of these tests were of poor quality and not what you would expect from a UKAS accredited lab.” The complaint came after publication of a flammability report in which it had commissioned FIRA to test 42 mattresses, bought by the magazine, to see if the products complied with British Standards, and the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988. It resulted in 10 products, including some from NBF member companies, failing a single blind test. The association was particularly concerned about sample mattress preparation whereby products were cut prior to being tested and, because of the resulting change in fabric tensions, no longer representative of the finished product. While unable to be specific about the issues identified by its investigation because of confidentiality agreements, UKAS has confirmed that it did throw up ‘areas for action’ which had been discussed at length with FIRA. In its letter to the NBF, UKAS explained: “There were issues which needed to be addressed under the requirements of accreditation. However, we are satisfied that FIRA understood these issues and are
taking the necessary actions to address them. UKAS has steps in place to monitor these for effectiveness as part of its ongoing assessment programme for this organisation.” Welcoming acknowledgement of its concerns by UKAS, the NBF’s executive director Jessica Alexander says: “The NBF is currently working together with test laboratories and UKAS, their accreditation body - as well as trading standards - to develop best practice guidelines for test procedures which would help to address the inconsistencies and conflicting results that can occur. “Our chief concern was the inconsistencies in testing which the investigation highlighted and going forward we are looking closely at the whole area of sample size specifications for mattress testing. “Our immediate priority following publication of the report last November was to conduct independent audits of all the NBF companies affected to check if their procedures and processes comply with our Code of Practice. Four of the five cited in the article passed while the fifth was subject to further investigation – and has shown marked improvement in subsequent audits. The NBF has almost completed re-auditing all members against its updated, Version 2 of its Code. This expands its scope to ensure members understand and comply with other regulations which also directly affect them - such as textile composition labelling - and also tightens up requirements for compliance.

in quality, design and choice at an affordable price, and we aim to create ‘Perfect Bedtimes’ for our customers. What extra do you offer your customers in terms of service? All of our mattresses come with up to a 10-year guarantee, plus we offer a 100-night mattress trial, so if the customer isn’t satisfied that they have chosen the right product for them in this time frame, we will exchange it. We also have mattress protection plans in place, and a mattress and divan disposal service available. in their bed-buying journey – including styles such as French Romance, Global Nomad, Countryside Hideaway and 19th Century Estate. What makes Feather & Black stand out from its competitors? What are the company’s aims? Our aim is to continue offering affordable luxury for our valued customers. In order to do this we are focused on two main things – maintaining our price promise and supplying an extensive range of bedroom products. Which products are popular with customers right now? Weathered oak furniture continues to be popular with our customer and the introduction of the rattan gives our customer a new Colonial style. Upholstered beds continue to grow, allowing the customer to make the product bespoke. What’s new in the company? We are very pleased to have recently appointed Phillipa MacDermott as our new Head of Buying, who brings with her a wealth of knowledge in the global textiles industry. She joins us after a career in buying spanning almost two decades, travelling the world to work with designers before specialising in home and lifestyle as a buyer at Laura Ashley. We’re also delighted to have won the Feefo Gold Service award last month, after gaining top praise from our customers last year, as well as being shortlisted for a VM Christmas Award for our special window displays in December. In addition, we recently worked with Chichester College, where art and designs
students used a selection of luxury beds, accessories and soft furnishings to design the show homes at the Ideal Home Show. How does the company address the needs of a changing market? We always make sure we’re up to date with the latest trends in our industry, and the latest phenomenon is the mattress in a box. This is something we have recently introduced in response to the needs of consumers. Our aim is to create a product that is high quality, comfortable and can be delivered to the customer within 48 hours. What trends are you currently experiencing? Feather & Black is supporting the bringing the outside inside trend, with the cover of the Spring brochure showing the fantastic new olive palms print and array of cushions in a green colour palette. What pressing issues are affecting the business right now? Actually business is pretty good at the moment. We haven’t experienced any marked effect from Brexit as we are not exposed overly to imports. The web is our largest store and customers love to try and buy as well, so local stores are really important to give a proper UK presence. What are the company’s future plans? We have plans to open new stores and we also will be relaunching spaces in Cheltenham and Fulham, which we are very excited about. 2016 was a very successful year for Feather & Black, and we are confident we can repeat this in 2017. We’re looking forward to the new directions the company is heading in. W featherandblack.com

This month, the homewares website in the spotlight is www.roseandgrey.co.uk – Furniture News explores the practices and philosophies behind the enterprise.
Clickthrough > Rose & Grey Lyndsey Goodger, director
Why visit your website? We offer a diverse range of furniture and home accessories, showcasing beautifully-designed and expertlycrafted pieces that will make your house a home. We like to introduce conversational and directional pieces that will create a bold statement in a room and become much loved pieces of furniture. We always go out of our way to assist customers.
working alongside our content manager to plan our monthly photoshoots and work on marketing plans, and keeping on top of the website. I try to find time to be in the showroom to help customers that are looking for style advice and want a good chat about their interior plans. I pick up our children from school as often as I can but in the evening I’m still researching via Instagram and Pinterest.
How did you enter this industry? We launched the business in 2008 on a small scale with our office in the basement of our home, using a low cost website and small adwords budget. We only had 80 SKUs to start with, most of them furniture. There was very little competition at the time with only a handful of homewares boutiques trading online, so within just a few months we were at the top of Google searches for our vintage leather sofas and armchairs, which were proving to be very popular. We relaunched a more sophisticated website a few years later as our order volume grew and took on a warehouse in 2013.
What has been your greatest challenge to date? The world of marketing has fundamentally changed since we started Rose & Grey and keeping up with where to allocate budget can be really challenging at times. In 2015 we saw a big drop off in SEO traffic which had a significant impact on the website. We quickly recovered but it was a scary time. It prompted us to open a showroom in Manchester to become a multichannel business which proved to be our best decision ever.
Who is your e-commerce hero? When it comes to inspiration for new functionality or content, I always look to ASOS as I really enjoy browsing their site. It’s so important that online customers have an enjoyable experience on your website, and adding extra functions such as video content or making the buying process as simple as possible can really help to convert sales. Describe a typical working day I start my working day at 8am, checking over emails with a coffee. As we are a small team, my time is mainly divided between sourcing and buying products,
FN 340 Pages.indd 32
that across is face to face. What are your growth plans for the business? We have just launched a new range of upholstered sofas and armchairs, all made in the UK. Over the next few years we will be working on significantly adding to the furniture range on our website with upholstery made in the UK and we will be looking further afield to add more unusual and interesting homeware to the website and showroom. We’re adding payment plans onto the website and other options like click and collect in the short term to enhance the customer’s experience with us when shopping online. What advice would you offer an aspiring e-tailer? Do your research, know your market and bring something new to the table. Trust your instinct and you should succeed.
How much do you invest in making your site more visible? We don’t spend a huge amount on marketing as have chosen instead to invest time in building up press and blogger relationships. What’s your take on how the relationship between online and physical retail might develop? I think it’s becoming more important to have a physical presence. Despite the growth of the internet, people still love the experience of shopping on the high street and actually being able to see the goods in person – especially important when you’re selling chairs and sofas. We think it’s important for a business to have personality and the best way to get

Powering up the future of the UK’s main furniture industry shows Furniture News speaks to Neil Gaisford, MD of the retail division at Clarion Events, following the organisation’s acquisition of, and ahead of its closer involvement with the development of, the January and Manchester Furniture Shows.
W
hat is the importance of events targeted for the UK furniture industry? The UK furniture industry is a healthy and vital component of the British economy, and requires strong and successful furniture shows to support it. Why did the partnership between Clarion and the January and Manchester Furniture Shows come about? This is an exciting partnership – it brings together the deep market knowledge and relationships of the founders with Clarion’s resources and marketing expertise in delivering world class retail business-to-business events, securing the long-term future of the events. What are your thoughts on how these two events have been developed over the years? We must acknowledge the achievements of Laraine Janes and Theresa Raymond, organisers of the Manchester Furniture Show and founders of the January Furniture Show. Through their passion and focus they have created a valued platform for the furniture sector to join together, to showcase and source the latest products and network with retailers and buyers from across the country.
FN 340 Pages.indd 34
How will the current organisers be involved in the events in the future? Laraine and Theresa have been involved with the running of furniture fairs for more than 30 years and they will continue to play a key strategic role in the direction of both events for the foreseeable future. Clarion’s role will be to support them with the necessary investment and expertise to develop the shows to their full potential. Why is Clarion the right fit for developing these events further? With 70 years’ experience organising successful retail shows including Home & Gift in Harrogate and Top Drawer in London, Clarion was the ideal choice when the team began to look for a partner to help them achieve the next stage of their shows’ development. We share the same passion for retail and events, taking pride in being in touch with, and close to the markets we serve. What is your vision for the events? We are committed to investing in the events, strengthening and building on their strong foundations and delivering an exciting next chapter for the show’s evolution. For our exhibitors, we are committed to maintaining the competitive and transparent pricing,
customer service and return on investment for which the shows are known. We’re investing money, effort and expertise in marketing to increase profile, visibility and reach, to attract new relevant visitor audiences. Who do you want to attract to the shows, and how will you develop their offering? We will attract more new suppliers to ensure a good variety of products to tempt visitors with an even better showcase of the latest suppliers and innovations. We’ll look carefully at complementary product sectors and suppliers to extend buying opportunities. How confident is Clarion about maintaining the success of these two shows? We are well-equipped to deliver on this vision, and I am confident that the industry will quickly see visible improvements. We are looking forward to working closely with manufacturers, suppliers, retailers and buyers – alongside Laraine, Theresa and their team – to ensure the events are up-todate and fulfil the evolving needs of the industry. IMM COLOGNE’S EUROPEAN PLATFORM The beginning of the year is heralded by one of the most important events in the furniture trade calendar – imm cologne. The exhibition will present the trends that are shaping the furniture and interiors sector, and the products that are profitable for business.
A
t imm cologne, visitors will find a unique variety of interior design ideas for every room, every style and every requirement – from the basics all the way to designer items and luxury furnishings. Cologne is in the middle of the world’s most important sales market, Germany, and centrally located in Europe. Exhibitors find all the relevant target groups in one place at imm cologne, making the event an ideal platform to present their ideas and innovations. For the next edition, the new trade fair format Pure Architects will be launched for the first time. With this segment, imm cologne is offering exhibitors of innovative room concepts the opportunity to present their latest products and innovations in the context of the lifestyle-oriented Pure segments every two years. The two themes of bathrooms and smart homes will be major focal points in this segment. For exhibitors from the bathroom sector, Pure Architects offers a unique opportunity to present their creative ideas for modern bathrooms in the context of an international interiors show. With the interactive Smart Home installation, imm cologne is not only
turning its attention to an important future issue, but showing live how new technologies are having an impact on the design of living spaces – and how interior design is responding. Together with imm cologne, Pure Architects provides a comprehensive and innovatively-staged overview of the furnishing world. The attractive supporting programme combines information and entertainment. imm cologne is a leading platform for new ideas, for innovations and trends and for young, creative, new design. Innovation and trends will be presented not just on the exhibitors’ stands but also displayed at a series of inspiring events. One of the most impressive is Das Haus – Interiors on Stage, in which life in the house of the future is imagined, designed and realised by a renowned international designer. However, the trade fair is not restricted to the trade fair grounds. Across the whole of Cologne, in shops, galleries and pop-up and off-the-beaten-track locations, special events and formats will provide plenty for visitors to talk about. The event will be held from 15th-21st January 2018 at Koelnmesse in Cologne, Germany. W imm-cologne.com

Furniture retailers invest heavily in attracting and retaining customers, but many focus solely on converting the sale, rather than on what occurs after the checkout process. However, what happens in that last mile between payment and delivery is critical to customers’ perception of a brand as it can influence both whether they decide to keep that purchase, and if they’ll shop with the retailer again, as Frank Lochbaum, managing partner at retail consultancy KPS, explains ...
Why the last mile is the most important in the purchasing marathon As the saying goes, ‘It’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon’, and furniture retailers certainly need to look to play the long game when it comes to customer satisfaction and retention by paying keen attention to the last mile in the customer journey marathon. To optimise the last mile delivery experience and the retention, retailers need to address three key areas: convenience, customer service based on transparent and end-to-end business processes. Convenience falls into two categories – speed and choice. Customer expectations are constantly increasing in terms of speed of delivery, this is in part due to the likes of Amazon Prime Now with its onehour delivery service and UberRUSH, which is offering real-time, on-demand delivery services to avoid costly bottlenecks during busy times. As well as speed, consumers demand choice via a range of fulfilment options to get their purchases to the most convenient location at a time that suits them. To keep up, retailers need to not only consider home/ work delivery options, but others such as order instore for home delivery. And it’s not just collections – it’s also returns that are critically important to shoppers. The two key questions on shoppers’ minds are typically: ‘Where can I return an item?’ And ‘are returns free of charge?’ This is further highlighted by our recent survey findings, as 57% of those polled said free delivery would directly impact on their decision to buy and 51% said they would not order from a company that does not have a free returns policy. When it comes to customer service, no matter how shoppers choose to have their orders fulfilled, the quality of the service they experience has to be consistent during the whole process – from ordering through to delivery – as this can directly impact on whether they choose to shop with a retailer again.

But it’s not just about that customer shopping again, their last mile experience can influence others as they share their positive or negative experiences with their family and friends, and even to the wider community through social media. Customers’ last mile expectations are high – and to compete, retailers should keep innovating their business processes. However, there’s a big problem here as so many furniture retailers are trying to innovate using legacy systems, that either cannot accurately respond to customer activity in real-time, or do not have the technical agility to respond efficiently to customer demand. This is where radical change is needed. If the technology retailers have now is not enabling them to meet shoppers’ needs and therefore retain them, it never will. So instead of trying to bring out-dated business processes up to speed, any effort and budget would be much better spent on starting anew with technology that is up to the job. Not only does technology and process innovation make it easier to respond to customer expectation, but it also makes it more profitable for retailers. It’s easier for them to fulfil based on inventory availability in all locations, and to categorise their choice of fulfilment location and service based on the value of the customer – and given the pressures being placed on delivery margins, this opportunity to become more cost-effective is extremely valuable. Essentially, processes need to be aligned with shoppers so they’re not only happy with their experience, but they come back for more. Customer retention is a key factor towards overall business success and retaining existing, loyal customers is a cost effective and profitable strategy which can be relatively simple to achieve. There’s no doubt that sometimes the last mile may seem more like a full marathon. But by pushing through the pain barrier – and adopting new technology with effective new business processes – furniture retailers can better experience the euphoria of successfully crossing that all important finish line and encourage customer retention, meaning they’ll be in a fitter position to begin the next journey.

Once firm fixtures on our high streets and retail parks, many department stores and high-profile brick and mortar retail chains are announcing massive store closures as billions of pounds in sales are moving from in store to online. While this has created issues for some, others are migrating to new strategies in order to meet the needs of consumers – this includes establishing relaxed return policies to remain competitive and implementing ongoing programs to effectively deal with those returns.Ben Whitaker, director for the EMEA region at B-Stock Solutions, explains the ways that indie retailers can keep up.
How independent furniture retailers can compete in a returns-happy marketplace Relaxed return policies build customer loyalty but also drive a culture of impulse buying – consumers are more inclined to make purchases knowing they can return items with minimal hassle. In ecommerce, returns are even more prolific as buyers - accustomed to free shipping and returns - are more likely to purchase several styles of the same product and send back the ones that they don’t want. This trend of easy returns, and the growing cost associated with it, is having a major impact on retailers of all sizes. This is especially evident when it comes to products that can’t be returned to store or virtual shelves and are slated for liquidation. Whilst furniture retailers will often have stipulations for what can be returned and in what condition, this does not prevent items coming back that can’t just go back into normal stock rotation. For smaller, independent furniture retailers with already thin margins and limited resources, it’s essential that they understand the true value of this stock and reassess whatever programs they have in place for the handling and remarketing of it. Typical methods like selling it to a middleman or negotiating offline with a handful of buyers inevitably leaves money on the table, as liquidators aren’t forced to complete and will negotiate prices down in order to maximize their own profits instead. What’s more, any time spent negotiating deals for merchandise takes focus away from core business activities. So what options are there for an independent furniture retailer looking to quickly turn its returned and excess stock into the most amount of cash possible? Rather than losing time and money to a liquidator, the most viable solution is to bypass layers
THE AUTHOR Ben Whitaker is director for the EMEA region at B-Stock Solutions, a technology-enabled company powering B2B liquidation marketplaces. W bstock.com
FN 340 Pages.indd 46
of middlemen and sell directly to an established base of business buyers, who can then sell directly to their consumers. Even if your returned and excess inventory has little value to you, there is likely a robust secondary market and buyer base for furniture, regardless of style or condition. Leveraging a business-to-business online auction liquidation marketplace helps you access this buyer base. The best marketplaces come with an established and vetted base of thousands of active buyers who will compete for your stock via online auctions, pushing prices up rather than a handful of liquidators negotiating them down. This type of solution, when used properly, can boost recovery by anywhere between 30 and 80 per cent, and potentially much more. What’s more, it will help deliver a faster sales cycle, quickly turning your returned and excess inventory into cash, as well as automating the process and generating proprietary market intelligence in the form of real data on market prices. There are a few best practices you should apply to get the most out of a B2B liquidation marketplace platform. For example, how your inventory is assembled and who it’s marketed to can have a huge impact on end price. It’s best to segment auction lots by product type, condition code, original MSRP per item, and location. Additionally, having a consistent supply of inventory will drive higher prices – regular auction listings will help you develop loyal followers and buyers, positively affecting recovery. Finally, providing a good customer experience is key. In an auction environment happy bidders will be return bidders, and can boost prices by double digits. With today’s buy it, try it, and take it back - with no questions asked - shopping culture fuelling frequent returns, it literally pays to rethink whatever program you have in place for the handling of returned stock. In the case of liquidation: every pound increase in recovery value, or reduction in expense, equals another pound of profit for you.

How do you turn a good customer experience into a great one? How do you ensure a one-off transaction becomes repeat trade? The way you engage with customers before, during and after their purchase will set the tone for your ongoing relationship with them. That is as true for face-to-face interactions as it is for online engagement, says Land of Beds’ Mike Murray.
The rules of customer engagement The journey of how you engage with your customer begins long before they decide to visit you in-store, and often starts with your e-commerce website and social media channels. Both present you with the opportunity to share your company history, the values you stand by and to celebrate your unique selling points. If you are a family-owned company, with a commitment to approachability and affordability, shoppers who like to buy from independent retailers, who need expert advice and who like to make costsavings know straight away: ‘I have come to the right place’. Use your digital platforms to provide advice and to offer entertainment – creating a reason for them to keep coming back to your website or social media accounts while they continue to finalise their decision to buy from you. You could do that by running a fun competition or producing buying guides and video reviews which answer key questions customers are likely to have. This helps them to feel assured they are making the best possible decision. Some people like to feel they are doing social good through the buying choices they make. To fulfil this need, every customer who bought a bed from us during national Share a Story Month was invited to nominate a local primary school to receive a complimentary book voucher from Land of Beds. Other customers are converted after seeing you at local events. For example, sponsoring our local Christmas tree and taking part in the Ho Ho Helsby Christmas float parade was a great way of engaging people who share our family values but have never previously set foot in our store. While continuing to speak to a person’s values base, you also need to meet their desire to buy quality furniture at the best price. It’s therefore essential to ensure your e-commerce and social media content is complimented by Facebook and Pay Per Click advertising campaigns, promoting seasonal sales and products that are exclusive or have limited availability.
THE AUTHOR Mike Murray (jnr) is the MD of Land of Beds, a third-generation family-run retailer based in Frodsham, Cheshire. W landofbeds.co.uk
FN 340 Pages.indd 48
When the customer’s values needs are met and they’ve chosen the product which best matches their budget and requirements, it’s now your job to make the sale as stress-free and enjoyable as possible. Run through a dummy buyer’s exercise. How easy is your e-commerce website to navigate? How simple is it to complete the transaction online? If you offer financing options, how long does it take to complete the application and how quickly do people get a decision? In-store, are your till points clearly designated and are there knowledgeable staff to hand to answer questions? Ask yourself: ‘What am I doing to make it easier for people to buy from me, to save them time and to minimise their inconvenience?’. For us, that includes offering a 10-minute interest-free credit application, free delivery on everything, an environmentallyfriendly remove and recycle service to get rid of old mattresses and an optional assembly service. Once your transaction is complete, your next goal is to either turn them into a repeat customer by upselling them additional products or to turn them into a champion for your business so that they recommend your goods and services to their friends and family. As a minimum, ask for feedback on their transaction and customer service experience. As we have seen in my previous columns, star rating is the number one factor people use to judge a business. Consumers say they trust online reviews more than an expert view or celebrity endorsement. If you have their email address and their permission to be contacted for marketing purposes, keep engaging existing customers through email marketing bulletins. For example, if you retail a product with a recommended lifespan – The Sleep Council recommends changing your mattress every seven years – remind them when the time to renew is fast approaching. I love the phrase ‘givers gain’, which is a philosophy based on the law of reciprocity. That’s why we also remind people what our latest competition is and incentivise people to recommend a friend. Finally, make sure your e-commerce site and social media platforms become customer magnets – places people want to return to again and again, even when they have made a purchase from you. Offer great free content that draws them into a perpetual buying cycle, or retains their services to you as a company cheerleader!

25 YEARS ON, STILL GOING STRONG Devonshire is proud to be celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. In 1992, Peter Hockin established Devonshire Pine, shortened to Devonshire in 2012, which still to this day manufactures top quality solid pine and painted ranges for retailers across the country. Trained as a contract sprayer, Peter took over the production side of the company when the business partnership fell apart, and built it up from the bottom to the manufacturing powerhouse it is today. In 2005, the company’s factory began the importing of oak furniture from China – now also Vietnam – and continues to evolve to this day. 25 years on, the business is still independent and family-run, employing well over 100 North Devon residents. Constantly expanding, Devonshire has recently added a mezzanine floor to its warehouse, increasing to 240,000ft2 of factory and warehouse space, along with extending its showroom to 36,000ft2 in order to highlight its ever-growing selection of furniture. The warehouse is home to a stockholding of £4.5m, meaning that lead times are kept low and service high. Being born during a recession has put Devonshire in the mindset to keep investing in its own production, constantly innovating whilst maintaining its financial security as it evolves. Everything at Devonshire is owned by the company – from the transport fleet, stock and machinery to the land on which the buildings sit. This is something of utmost importance to the company, to ensure a comfortable and stable future in the industry. Devonshire is conscious of the environment and its responsibility to preserve it, only sourcing its timber from
FN 340 Pages.indd 60
sustainable forests and investing in in-house sustainability projects. One such project includes a recent £250,000 upgrade of the business’ wood-burner, to keep up with the growing demand from an increase in painted furniture going through the factory. The burner is used to heat Devonshire’s five drying rooms, as well as the rest of the factory, and significantly reduces the waste going to landfill. The company has also made the switch to water-based paint, cutting solvent emissions but still retaining the quality. After a successful launch of seven new ranges this year, Devonshire supplies a total of 18 furniture ranges, with some containing over 80 individual pieces. Sourcing 14 oak ranges has given a new dimension to Devonshire’s business, allowing it to open up new doors across the country and provide a unique range to suit any retailer’s preference. Manufacturing the other four pine ranges in-house also means that Devonshire can offer a wide selection of finishing options for those ranges, from wax to lacquer and many different paint colours. All of the company’s pine furniture is built to order from kiln-dried Scandinavian redwood timber, delivered to the factory where it is machined, assembled, sprayed and packed ready for delivery by its own fleet to retailers across the UK. Manufacturing its own product means that Devonshire has full control over the quality of the furniture and the lead times – an increasingly important factor in a price-and-speed-driven market. BESP-OAK’S WELL-ROUNDED OFFER Leading importer Besp-Oak Furniture has invested heavily in making the supply of wholesale and container furniture stock as quick as possible by storing stock at its overseas factory, making lead times on direct mixed container stock orders as quick as six to eight weeks from order placement to delivery. Using intelligent data analysis, over 750 of Besp-Oak’s leading lines have been selected, handmade and stored ahead of the new fast track ordering system which launches this month. Unlike competitors with order restrictions, with Besp-Oak there is no maximum number of lines. To support the new fast ordering and delivery system, discounts have been applied on 20ft, 40ft and 40ft high cube mixed containers. The stock holding takes into account the increase in demand for painted furniture as well as oak. Over the past two to three years the company has noticed a change in trend with more customers ordering items from the Vancouver Expressions and

Chalked Oak collections which allows customers to choose from numerous popular painted colours with golden oak or chalked oak tops. To boost mid-season sales, the company is currently holding an online wholesale sale with discounts on some of the most popular lines including indoor oak and outdoor. In light of the new painted trend, MD Steve Mosley has this year introduced the Rosa collection which features an entirely new cornice design which took the company and its buyers by storm at the January Furniture Show and Spring Fair earlier this year.

Victoria, Hyder Living
Renowned for its innovative sleep solutions for adults and children, Hyder Living (www.hyderint.com) extends its 2017 portfolio with Victoria, a sleigh bed that demonstrates the brand’s desire to push design boundaries to new limits. “Victoria truly is elegance exemplified, and we’re sure that retailers will delight in presenting this luxurious double sleigh bed to their valued customers. This bed is supremely hand-crafted, ensuring the highest levels of care and attention are adhered to throughout the production process. The end result a beautiful ergonomic look that blends straight lines and curves in all the right places,” explains Zed Hyder, CEO, Hyder Living. “Joining the high quality wooden base frame is shimmering velvet fabric, adding to the levels of luxury that the room will receive. This addition helps Victoria to meet current market demand for metallic aesthetics, soft to the touch and with individually-placed studs adorning both head and footboards for an unmistakably high-end feel. Teamed with cushions and blankets of a similar style, this is an indulgent piece of furniture that helps to drive our living spaces into AW17.” The Victoria sleigh bed boasts the best of both worlds – handcrafting that sticks to traditional methods championing quality and durability, while holding an altogether contemporary look. Available in both 4ft 6in and 5ft, this product is fully backed by the company’s renowned service levels, whereby the customer can tailor a solution to meet their exacting needs.
With its official UK launch at the Manchester Furniture Show, the CW collection and the LW collection bring two on-trend finishes to one of Kettle Interiors’ (www. kettleinteriorsagencies.com) most popular oak collections. With a less saturated oak look that gives a natural finish, the CW collection has a wide appeal through its relaxed feel, a trademark of the Wansford range it is set to replace. It also retains the same antique-effect metal handles for a near-seamless transition. Taking inspiration from the Scandi finish of the NT collection, the LW collection shares the same newlydeveloped light lacquer finish to bring a modern feel to the same carcass. Enhanced with chrome handles, this new range is a must in contemporary style homes. Both ranges are available for dining, occasional and bedroom and can be accessed through Kettle Interiors’ leading wholesale, stockist and container supply packages. Shop display discounts are available for firsttime orders on these new collections.

them. It creates a rich and calming look. Linens are also breaking through, creating a fresh clean look which is perfect for the bedroom. “As a design-led company, the overall finish is just as crucial as the practicalities of a bed. We cater for those who want affordable contemporary designs in the home and our wide range of fabrics ensures we’re always on trend.”

70 | Beds & Bedroom With the days getting slowly hotter, sleep tends to get progressively more difficult. Luckily for stockists of top UK bed brand Sealy (www.sealy.co.uk), some mattresses include Geltex, an innovative combination of elastic gel and airpermeable foam. Providing sleeping comfort, Geltex’s open cell structure allows air to circulate more easily – helping to regulate body temperature in bed. Geltex also offers zonal support for the body, responding to each person’s individual shape and weight. Especially effective for those experiencing aching joints or bed-bound pressure sores, this unique material helps avoid any extra strains whilst sleeping. Ensuring full body support throughout the night, Geltex helps individuals wake feeling refreshed. Sealy is one of the biggest bed brands in the world and has been steadily growing for over 100 years. It can trace its origins back to the late nineteenth century and the original cotton-filled mattress produced by Daniel Haynes in the town of Sealy, Texas.

The Branford Painted collection from Heritage Furniture (www.heritagefurnitureuk.com) was launched in January to bring diversity to the existing range and cater for the growing demands and trends for UK homeowners. Inspired by Shaker style, the Branford painted bedroom range boasts simplicity, whilst maintaining its warmth and character. The paint finish will blend with any decor, satisfying a number of tastes and trends. Designs have been kept simple with no unnecessary adornments, but an extra level of detail has been provided to soften the clean lines, elegant tapered legs, curved edges and rounded corners. Heritage Furniture is a family-run business, established in 2005 in Blackburn, Lancashire. It design, manufacture and supply quality solid wood oak, pine and Indian sheesham furniture. The business constantly develops fresh ideas and new designs.
new feature is the auto on-off shelf strip internal lighting. Smart LED interior lights with motion detectors can be added to all VIP ranges, and the effect is doubly enhanced by the addition of LED side lights framing the exterior. Stylish touch on-off lighting is also available on bedside cabinets, many of which are fitted with USB ports for smart phones and tablet charging. A clever mattress height adapter mechanism that allows the beds to accommodate deeper mattresses features across a number of Wiemann’s ranges. Simon Hewitt, MD of Litmus Furniture, Wiemann’s sole agent for the UK and Ireland, says: “After more than 10 years of selling to the UK, we have a good idea of what hits the spot for both retailers and consumers. We aim to be the best we can, with the range and quality in our product offering and our service. We are constantly working to improve – always looking to see if we can do better.”

BED TRAINING COURSES FOR ALL With the launch of a new, shortened version of its established training programme for bed salespeople – the Express Sleep Sales Course – the NBF now believes it offers a package of online training courses to cater for everyone in the industry. Derived from its full Sleep Sales Course, the express version is for those salespeople who choose not to record their weekly sales data or for those whose primary role is not in sales – such as department managers, directors and customer service roles. The new, express course excludes the sales data capture (SCR) modules which record sales conversion rates and average order values. Simon Williams, marketing manager at the NBF, says: “The development of the Express Course came after we noticed that some retail salespeople who had started the original course were not completing it. On investigation, it became apparent that not all candidates had the time to record SCRs or it was simply not applicable to their job role. “This new version can be completed in a matter of hours rather than weeks but importantly still maintains all the key learning and assessment modules.” Upon completion of the new Express Sleep Sales Course, candidates receive an associate certificate via email, whilst those completing the full programme become graduates of the
FN 340 Pages.indd 78
academy, receiving a pin badge and certificate with their names and company name added to the NBF Roll of Honour on the Sleep Council Sales Academy website. Simon continues: “The beauty of this course, as with all our training, is it can be accessed anywhere online using either a PC, tablet or mobile. Delegates signing up can also download the Sleep Hub app to track their progress and complete the course remotely.” The Express Course is the latest addition to the NBF’s training options which also includes The Introduction to Beds Course, designed for anyone new to the bed industry, regardless of their role. It is also ideal to be used as part of an induction programme for all new starters in a business. The Express Sleep Sales course costs £49 whilst the Introduction to Beds is just £25. There is also a special bundle offer – the Express Sleep Sales Course or full Sleep Sales course, plus Introduction to Beds for just £60. All courses are completely free to NBF member companies. Mammoth is enjoying continued success
MAMMOTH BUCKS THE DOWNWARD TREND With the National Bed Federation Bed Show around the corner once again, Mammoth has been taking a look back at the past year to see how business has been. The news is positive and the team is optimistic about the future. Mammoth is celebrating a 25% increase for its year-end sales figures – so what is the company’s secret to success? There are several reasons, according to Mammoth’s head of marketing, Kris Wood: “At Mammoth, we’re always looking for new ways to move forward, more ways to help our retailers, and better ways to drive footfall to the retail partners which stock our products.” With a number of fresh initiatives in the pipeline for engaging and educating sales staff and taking the Mammoth brand further and higher, it is no surprise that innovation, health and wellbeing are the main ideas at the heart of the Mammoth ethos. “We’re incredibly proud of our healthcare roots and carry the lessons learned there with us in everything we do at Mammoth,” continues Kris. “Each and every product we design and launch contains the technology and innovations to help our customers achieve ultimate comfort, thereby helping to improve their health and wellbeing. “But we don’t just design products which we think will help. Thinking isn’t a good enough goal for us. We have put our products through stringent testing and research, under the watchful eyes of our friends at the world-renowned Northumbria Centre for Sleep Research at Northumbria University, where they have been found to relieve pressure, assist with temperature control and facilitate a greater sense of comfort all round. We call it our ‘Science of Comfort’.” That’s not the only partnership that Mammoth has entered
FN 340 Pages.indd 86
into to share the team’s knowledge about health and wellbeing. Mammoth is proud of its links with both the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists and the Rugby Players’ Association. These links have seen Mammoth products being recommended for the use of patients by physiotherapists around the country as well as helping some of England’s top athletes achieve essential restorative sleep, to help with punishing training regimes or recuperation after injury. “We’ve also had some of the UK’s top flite athletes knocking on our door, asking to buy our products, after having seen firsthand, the benefits that our innovations bring,” explains Kris. “We’re very proud of our growing portfolio of Olympians, World Champions and elite athlete ambassadors, who use, benefit from and sing the praises of our Mammoth products and choose Mammoth as a big part of their training and recovery regime. “Every aspect of the Mammoth marketing programme boils down to one main goal – driving footfall to our retailers’ stores and making their sales teams’ jobs as easy as possible when it comes to selling a Mammoth product.” Mammoth is working hard to fight against the tide of austerity sweeping not only the furniture industry, but the country as a whole. “Our year to date sales figures point to the fact that we’re managing very nicely to buck the trend this year,” concludes Kris. “We are absolutely delighted and hope to continue the trend, while doing our bit to support the UK’s economy.” W mammothcomfort.co.uk

Reacting to changes in the buying habits of both retailers and consumers, Flair Rugs (01457 850660) has launched a new e-commerce website allowing its trade partners to order rugs, access stock availability and monitor deliveries 24 hours a day, seven days a week. “Following significant market research and analysing feedback from our retail partners, it was clear that our customers were embracing the digital age and enjoying the added value it brings to their business,” explains Gareth Davies, sales and marketing director at Flair Rugs. “With this in mind, we soon realised that if consumers were able to purchase products any time of the day or night, why shouldn’t retailers, and so we set about building an online platform to fulfil the requirements of our loyal customer base. “Our e-commerce site seamlessly falls in line with the modern-day lifestyle, meaning our products can be explored and ordered 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and with ease. Live stock updates enable the retailer to discover what’s in stock and when it’s deliverable.”
Things are changing at SWS (0161 205 5444). This leading wholesaler from Manchester has been busy sourcing new exclusive fully-assembled ranges that reflect today’s market.

The Louis de Poortere (www.louisdepoortere.com) bespoke rug and runner service has been popular with both retailers and consumers for a number of years, and this reputation is set to be extended with the introduction of a blind finishing option, exclusively available to the Haute Couture portfolio of styles. Blind finishing allows for a neater, more sophisticated effect through its invisible binding, ready for implementation on a customer’s bespoke rug or runner, and giving an alternative aesthetic to traditional serging or ultrafine binding. This is ideal for working into modern interior schemes that require a minimalist approach, and look to deliver a more clean and clinical style. “Our team has developed an invisible binding option, named blind finishing, for use across our Haute Couture tailor-made rugs and runners service. We’ve already witnessed a fantastic reaction to blind finishing across our UK retail network, and we fully expect this to continue as we move through 2017,” says Alan Russell, UK sales director at Louis de Poortere. While the Louis de Poortere tailor-made service is available for use with all Louis de Poortere broadloom designs, this new binding option is only available to the popular Haute Couture and its versatile range of styles.
Torino is a range of oak in a natural finish that shows all the beauty of American oak with just a hint of added colour. Corners are dubbed to give an aged effect and drawers are dovetailed, which gives this large range even more appeal. Lucca is similar in shape and size to Torino but is painted in an ‘elephant’s breath’ colour that is popular in today’s market. Like Torino, all drawers are dovetailed and corners are dubbed. Both ranges have contemporary knob handles, and both have many pieces ranging from bedroom to dining and occasional. Circular extending tables are popular, as are all occasional pieces. Mail order packaging is standard, and DHD can be easily arranged with the sales

team at SWS. High resolution photos of all pieces as well as room sets are also available from the sales office. SWS invests heavily to make sure that stock levels are always high for bigselling ranges and Torino and Lucca are no exception. Containers are lined up to arrive weekly starting mid-July.

DINING ROOM •••
Glass dining table, Febland
It has been a quiet trading time for Febland throughout May leading into June, with school holidays and the election diverting interest away from shopping. However, Febland (www.febland.co.uk) is optimistically bringing in new colours to existing lines and has collated some new giftware, mirrors and artefacts from its recent buying trip, which will materialise into stock in August. Customers can check the company’s new website for updates. Febland Group is one of the biggest wholesale furniture suppliers in Lancashire, England, specialising in modern funky furniture, home lighting, wall mirrors, home accessories, mirrored furniture, mosaic lamps, chrome ceramics, bar furniture, arts and gifts to the retail sector nationwide. Febland specialises in the distribution of contemporary furniture and other products to clients all over the UK and Europe.
M&P Chairs (www.mandpchairs.co.uk) has recently experienced a strong run on its beech farmhouse-style chairs, especially the slat back and spindle back side and low Carver chairs and the high back slat Grandad chairs. The company has also seen strong demand for its beech and oak Shaker side chairs with solid wooden and rush seats and its stylish oak Caversham and Carra side chairs. Customers can purchase M&P’s chairs unfinished and finished in a variety of wax, lacquer, oiled and paint coverings. Strong demand required the company to bring forward its re-stocking programmes, and it replenished its inventories in late May, several months earlier than expected. The company’s enhanced marketing efforts appear to be paying off and it is

LO, Kettle Interiors
Kettle Interiors’ (01536 444960) CO collection introduces a new lighter and less saturated finish that creates a more natural look. With the same antique brass-effect handles as its predecessor, the range still has a rustic feel. In the LO collection, the same carcass has been given a fresh and modern feel, with the supplier opting for an almost-raw, lime-wash finish and chrome cup handles to make the new LO collection best in modern-style homes. Both ranges are available for dining, occasional and bedroom and can be accessed through Kettle Interiors’ wholesale, stockist and container supply packages.
still receiving an increasing number of new enquiries and orders from parties who visited the company’s stand at this year’s January Furniture Show. Many of these new customers are from much further afield than M&P’s traditional geographical trading footprint. The company feels that some consumer confidence is returning to the market, and it anticipates a very busy trading period to commence in September following the usually more-subdued summer holiday period. M&P is based in East Sussex, carries large stocks of its core products and distributes throughout the UK using its own delivery vehicles and pallet and courier providers. It prides itself in being able to deliver high quality European hardwood chairs to customers quickly and efficiently.

T
he Manchester Furniture Show takes place at Manchester Central, opposite the city’s grand old Midland Hotel. It will feature some of the finest exponents of UK and international furniture and home accents supply, with over 150 companies due to exhibit. Lebus, Ashley Manor and Mark Webster Designs will be among the headline UK makers displaying their wares, while multi-category supplier Wood Bros will exhibit its new Oskar living and dining collection, its latest upholstery, and new designs from its flagship heritage Old Charm brand. North Wales producer Westbridge is presenting a selection of British upholstery, introducing new models and fabrics to its Elements, WB and Artisan ranges, while Whitemeadow will expand on the January-introduced upholstery line launched in partnership with Content by Terence Conran. CIMC, known for supplying the finishing touches including lighting and accents, will introduce furniture to its premium range, with an of-the-moment programme that spans modern and period interiors including super-soft handmade sofas and chairs upholstered in plush velvet or matt linen fabrics. Baker Furniture will display its already-popular reclaimed series collections while Rowico will be another key name known for its time-worn look, including its new Warwick range, featuring subtle grey tones with gentle curves and a distressed finish. German bedroom cabinetmakers Rauch and Nolte Möbel will exhibit, with the latter showing its award-winning ConceptMe brand along with products from its Express label. What’s more, Gallery Direct will bring over 1300 strikinglydesigned on-trend furniture pieces, mirrors, textiles and home accessory lines, while Ancient Mariner will offer an eclectic mix of hand-made wooden, leather and metal occasional furniture

104 | Manchester Furniture Show Preview Visitors to the 2017 Manchester Furniture Show will once again be able to see and review the wide range of services the British Furniture Manufacturers (BFM) (www.bfm.org.uk) has to offer. Jackie Bazeley, MD, says: “We’re delighted to be attending the show for the second year. It’s a great way to meet up with potential and existing members of the BFM as well as network with people from the furniture sector.” The BFM is a trade association that has represented the interests of the British furniture industry for more than 60 years. It is run by members for members and the wider industry. Membership is open to manufacturing companies in all sectors including upholstery, cabinet, bathroom, kitchen, office, mattresses and beds. Heritage’s new direction Heritage is working hard to become an increasingly design-led business, leaning away from traditional, pure commercial ranges towards those with a unique appeal.
Branford
H
eritage is moving away from mass commercial looking products and is creating a portfolio of design-led furniture that has character, depth and affordability. Customers and retailers have been reacting well to the company’s new direction. Heritage’s latest products display the company’s focus on the interpretation of differentiation within its design. Multiple ranges Heritage launched in January have proven to be successful, and the company is enjoying strong sales figures, with the trend set to continue throughout the year. Popular customer-favourite ranges from Heritage is the Alstead living and dining collection, with a Shaker aesthetic and waxed oak and oak veneer tops to contrast the grey painted finish. Another is the Branford painted bedroom collection, also Shakerinspired, which focuses on simplicity.
FN 340 Pages.indd 106
Moda
Two other popular ranges are Moda Oak - a contemporary range for living and dining with clean lines and a geometric appeal - and the Corbett Oak bedroom collection, with style and simplicity and the rustic warmth of natural oak all combined together. Heritage is continuing to invest in product development, sales and marketing, with two new sales representatives and a new head of marketing. This internal investment shows the business is serious about being retailers’ preferred furniture supplier. Special attention has been given to Heritage’s internal processes and technology to make it easier for retailers to buy, including up-to-date stock checking capability, online ordering and clear delivery times. Heritage will be exhibiting at the Manchester Furniture Show on stand D20. W heritagefurnitureuk.com

his year’s Manchester Furniture Show sees development to the already-popular Warwick collection, which received a positive response earlier this year at the January Furniture Show. The collection has been expanded to include a contemporary bedroom range encapsulating the true essence of Warwick’s subtle grey hues, gentle curves and limed timber accents which fuse to deliver style. The entire collection is now also available in an all-over blonde finish, accentuating the natural grain and further enhancing its characterful exterior.

ith Bluebone’s customers asking for a more comprehensive range of products, the company has responded with a wider portfolio, and to celebrate its 21 years in business, it will be offering some great deals on these displays. The Soft Industrial theme offers a raw, pared-down loft look. The theme encompasses four key displays that can be accessorised with any of the many stools, wall racks, wall art and lights. Birdcage offers fine lines with feminine shapes for living and laid-back bar and dining options, whilst Hairpin dining is a distinct nod to mid-century modern design. Hairpin legs with mango wood on top provides contrast, staying true to the style’s honest, retro heritage. Bluebone’s Re-engineered range features Parisian caféstyle table legs, iconic chairs and vintage chests. What’s more, Lounge uplifts the popular round corners into the current

trends with brushed gunmetal legs and open handles. Cool Nordik offers an understated look in cool greys and soft whites one would find in Scandinavia. Subtle shades of grey bring out the natural grain of the wood, where clean painted furniture bases set the tone. Storm Grey is a new take on the classic farmhouse style, bringing it into city living. Lightly brushed-back tops are sandy coloured, to tone down the grey base. Oslo brings the midcentury tale into this theme. Natural driftwood tables, hide stools and Lumiere lights all complement the look. For those that can’t get enough of the summer, Bluebone will bring not just its popular pair of outdoor hounds to the show, but bathing belles and hares will join the selection this year at the Manchester Furniture Show. Gallery’s continued expansion After a successful start to the year, when Gallery Direct introduced over 300 new products, the company is now looking forward to exhibiting at the Manchester Furniture Show. A great deal of planning and development has been in action since January, as Gallery is set to launch more products.

ames Hudson, Gallery’s sales and business development director, says: “We were delighted with how well all our new products were received at the January Furniture Show. The Mustique collection proved to be incredibly successful, so much so that we immediately started developing a bedroom range. We are now pleased to announce that this will be launched at the Manchester Furnitute Show. “The bedroom furniture will be built to the same high

standards and attention to detail as the living and dining range, and will include bedsteads, a lingerie chest, a bedside, chests of drawers, a wardrobe, and a dressing table, mirror and stool. Plus, for the first time, Gallery is offering a headboard that can be used with any divan. The great range of pieces available offers the opportunity for a fully co-ordinated bedroom, even for those who prefer a divan to a bedstead.” The new Mustique pieces are not the only items being

A spindle bed in three sizes, a five-drawer chest with a solid top and drawer fronts, a new design sideboard with solid top and door fronts, and an extending rectangular dining table are being added to the Wycombe collection, as well as new design coffee and side tables. drawer, and the reworking of the bedside so that it can also be used as side table. Completing the product launches are two new dining chairs, in a choice of colours. All the new items will be exhibited at the show, along with a varied selection of products from Gallery’s current catalogue. Visit the Gallery team on stand B35 to view these striking new products. his year’s Manchester Furniture Show providses a platform for Corndell to present a full complement of striking pieces from across its design portfolio, introducing new creations and also presenting bestsellers updated for today’s more erudite and knowledgeable design-led consumer. Hand-painted Annecy Living and Dining features an oaktopped table which, with elegantly-tapered legs and a handpainted finish – when paired with a cross backed upholstered chair, the effect is impactful. The Annecy Living Dining range is extensive at 17 pieces and the highlights include the dressers, either open with oak display shelves or glazed, with a timeless oak interior. All Annecy products are available in a hand-painted palette which includes white, buttermilk and cotton – which is the most popular finish selected for displays with its cool grey tone – plus a pale taupe, a pale blue grey called Haze, a traditional soft, green grey, Ledum, and a deeper, warm grey, Fawn. The painting methods used at the home of the brand in
FN 340 Pages.indd 122
Oxfordshire, provide a smooth finish with the occasional idiosyncrasy which is typical of hand-finished pieces. The furniture, with its carefully selected colour and handle choice, is then unique to each customer. Created in and inspired by the Cotswolds, Nimbus is a stylish range of solid and veneered oak cabinet with sleek lines and a calm aesthetic. This sophisticated furniture is at home in any environment – from contemporary to traditional, allowing the interior decorator to express their own style, while the Nimbus oak dining, living and bedroom pieces remain constant and durable. The collection is available in over 70 pieces from stock and in a range of four wood shades, all expertly hand finished. Nimbus is now benefiting from the Corndell expertise in hand painting, and at the show Nimbus will be presented in original Satin and also in Ledum, a subtle green paint colour, one of a range of four paint options. This development introduces Nimbus to a new audience which prefers personalised options. A further new development for Corndell is Blenheim, a relaxed modern dining furniture range made of pale oak with

simplicity of style inspired by Shaker design. The softly-angled legs on the tables and cabinetry give an elegant and stylish profile to each piece. Made from solid and veneered oak, the tops of the tables and sideboards are smooth to the touch and the pale wood grain is highlighted by the panelled door feature. This furniture is finished in a clear matt lacquer, designed to both protect the timber and show off the aesthetic of the wood. The look is further enhanced by the wide choice of stylish handles. Inspired by a gently authentic vintage, Cheltenham, with its impressive hand carved details, is a striking bedroom range. Finished in all over limed oak or painted in Pewter, Chalk or a soft grey Cotton, with limed oak tops, it has a choice of four handle finishes. The pale veneer, curving design features and soft, hand-painted colour choices create a traditional feel but with a contemporary edge. In Corndell’s extensive portfolio, a proven winner is Fairford, a dining range in a combination of solid and veneered oak,

which, in its light oil finish, has a powerful presence. The dining tables in the range offer wide choice – a larger table which extends up to 3.1m and can easily seat 12 for a family banquet, a trestle table with matching bench, and an extending trestle table adding a contemporary element ideal for kitchen dining. The highlights of the range are the stylish cabinets which include a large and extra-large sideboard and a unique console with integral wine rack. This impressive dining suite in oak creates a practical feature with nickel handles, strong oak frame, a steel extending mechanism, plus a choice of ladder back or upholstered chairs. Oak Mill Dining is a bold, powerful style statement, which brings the Corndell naturally-inspired design signature up to date. The combination of metal and slabs of solid oak with a raw authentic edge create a high-end design look. In White Oiled Oak or Waxed Oak, and a choice of a wooden slab leg or black steel leg, the table is complemented by a retro style chair with metal frame and antiqued, suede effect seat. Kettle focuses on regeneration The appearance of Kettle Interiors at this year’s Manchester Furniture Show is perhaps the supplier’s most significant yet, as it looks to a bold move that sees two of its most popular oak collections superseded by four key ranges officially launched at the event.
LW bedroom
S
ales director Simon Ainge says: “Oakham has been the best-selling stalwart in our oak line-up for several years now and Wansford certainly ranks as one of our bestselling collections, so it is certainly a powerful move to consider replacing them. However, we want to be known as a supplier that keeps our retailers in touch with trends in style and price, which have an impact on the shop floor when it comes to sales figures.” While still a popular shape that works well in virtually any setting, the warming hues of Oakham were bucking the trend to lime-wash and lighter oak finishes. With these less-saturated looks now firmly in the mainstream, Kettle Interiors has breathed new life into the Oakham carcass with the launch of two new collections. Sharing Oakham’s shape and proportions, the CO collection, introduces a new lighter finish that creates a more natural look. With the same antique brass effect handles, the CO collection still has a rustic feel that will work best in homes looking for a
FN 340 Pages.indd 124
relaxed feel. Available for dining and occasional and bedroom, the range can be considered the straight replacement for Oakham, offering continuity and ensuring that retailers can continue to offer this best-selling oak style in a finish ideal for today’s homes. In the LO Collection, the same carcass has been given a fresh and modern feel, with Kettle Interiors opting for an almostraw, lime-wash finish and chrome cup handles to make the new LO collection best in modern-style homes. Available in the same quantity of items throughout bedroom, dining and occasional as its sister – the CO collection – the range gives new life to a proven shape that is both popular and practical. Whilst many suppliers struggle to hold pricing with rising costs, Kettle Interiors has managed the reverse, making oak furniture more accessible than ever before. With some reengineering and without having to play with proportions or overall sizes, the supplier has managed to reduce prices

LO dining
between 10-20% on average for both the CO collection and the LO collection. This is a dramatic reduction that marks a significant attempt to solidify market share for these ranges. Gradually expanded over the last few years, the Wansford collection has become one of the supplier’s most popular oak collections, providing retailers with a consistent stream of sales in dining, occasional and bedroom pieces. Again, Kettle has used a similar formula, introducing a re-worked finish better suited to the latest trends and a more radical overhaul suited to modern homes. Using the same carcass as that on the Wansford collection, a less-saturated oak look gives the CW collection wide appeal through its relaxed and welcoming feel, a trademark of the range it is set to replace. It also retains the same antiqueeffect metal handles and comes in the same items for dining, occasional and bedroom. Again, the CW collection provides a seamless transition for retailers that have had good success with Wansford.
FN 340 Pages.indd 125
With the LW collection, Kettle Interiors has taken inspiration from the NT Collection, a Scandi range launched at the beginning of the year. Already selling fast, it features a newlydeveloped light lacquer finish that has been applied to the popular Wansford carcass. Bringing a contemporary feel that is enhanced with chrome handles, this new range is available in the same items and with the same aggressive pricing as its sister style for dining, occasional and bedroom use. With the reduced pricing of the CO and LO collections, it is also a development that stands testament to the supplier’s ambition to deliver retailers and their customers even more value. As consumer belts across the country begin to tighten this is undoubtedly a shrewd move. The supplier will launch these bold new ranges to the UK marketon stand B21 at the Manchester Furniture Show, showing alongside staples such as DG, TT and NT. T 01536 444960

Envy Lighting
Outdoor statues, Bluebone
Portugal’s Envy Lighting (sales@iiiuk.com, www.envylighting.com) reports that its high-quality ceramic table and floor lamps have made a significant impact in the UK since their launch in 2012, seeing continual YoY growth in both volume and the number of stockists. Retailers such as Andersons of Inverurie, Arthur Llewellyn-Jenkins, Arighi Bianchi, Mia Stanza and Stokers Fine Furniture have all benefited from Envy’s contemporary designs, with models such as the Arche, Bilba, Carea, Daims and Pyra offering variety and quality for the discerning consumer.
Ambassador Textiles (www.ambassadortextiles.co.uk) enjoyed a successful January Furniture Show, receiving positive reports, and the company expects a busy year ahead. Upholstery businesses new and old expressed interest in Ambassador’s extensive marble velour and wool fabrics, and there was also a great deal of attention paid to the company’s faux fur collections, including Katrina Hampton. Ambassador Textiles was established in 1972 and has developed from humble beginnings to become the busy textile merchants it is today, supplying a comprehensive range of fabrics to the wholesale, retail and manufacturing industry. It boasts a large selection of upholstery and furnishing fabrics including Faux Suede, Chenille, Velour and Leatherette.
FN 340 Pages.indd 130
With furniture stores increasingly looking for lifestyle accessories, Bluebone (0161 330 8959) is now offering a new range of fun oversized sculptures – the Ballet Class in particular caught the attention of visitors to the January Furniture Show at the start of this year. Patchwork quilts and throws, and a new range of wooden buffalo horns were also popular. To prepare for summer, Bluebone (0161 330 8959) has stocked up on outdoor statues. The range includes dogs sitting at 1m tall, bathing women in yoga poses, and smaller pieces. Made out of glass-reinforced fibre cement, these items are sturdy yet lightweight and make ideal garden features. Meanwhile, Bluebone’s soft industrial-style range remains popular. The concept includes several boutique ranges - Hairpin, Birdcage and Mango Lounge – alongside classic industrial reproductions. All combine the same brushed gunmetal and solid mango to give a commercial finish.

136 | Trade Services With increasing demand for value-added products such as the Encore cushion range, and ever-shortening lead times, Fibreline (fibreline-ltd.co.uk) believes that in-house control of the sewn-case production is essential for meeting customer demand. Over the last 24 months, Fibreline has undertaken a major project to increase its in-house cut and sew capacity. Step one was a complete refurbishment of an existing building into which the company installed 10,000ft2 of mezzanine flooring to house the existing cutting and sewing facilities. All this was done while maintaining continuous production and keeping customers supplied. Step two was to increase cutting capacity. An additional state-of-the-art CNC cutting machine was installed along with laying-up equipment and extra sewing machines were purchased. This resulted in a doubling of capacity. Finally, step three was to recruit more sewing machinists. Having recognised that the textile industry has lost many skilled machinists over the years, the management knew that recruitment of

Prior to adopting Ordorite, EZ Living encountered some of the issues when trying to expand. Due to their rapid expansion (from 2 – 10 stores), EZ Living needed live information across all stores and departments such as sales, delivery, order changes, stock levels, financials and other. Ordorite provided EZ Living with a comprehensive system which increased and improved productivity, operational efficiency, decision making and cash flow during its expansion, growing from a company turning €5 million per annum to its current turnover in excess of €40 million. Liam Dilleen, Director, EZ Living Furniture, Ireland
“We needed to systemise our furniture business in order to have one full integrated system to support our expansion. Ordorite provided this to us, tailoring their product to meet our needs. We have worked closely with Ordorite over the years to help our business grow from 2 stores to 10 stores, with more than 150 employees using the system daily. They are now the corner stone of our business, providing us live stock across all our branches and KPI information for all departments, which guides us to make accurate business decisions.”
Prior to Ordorite, Brand Interiors had no real system in place and were looking for a software product to help them efficiently manage their stock control and daily running of business. No other software company was meeting their needs until they met Ordorite. Brand Interiors were looking for software which was user-friendly, had previous clients in the same industry, and a software team they could rely upon, and Ordorite met all these requirements. From the outset, Ordorite took a hands-on approach and outlined a training plan to guide Brand Interiors with the implementation of the software. The software was a success for Brand Interiors, offering them flexible pricing, straight forward set-up and installation, the ability to track stock, and much more.

Who does the company supply to? Our trade audience includes onsellers, manufacturers, architects, project managers and facilities managers. In 2013 we set out to build a Partner initiative for our key customer segments – starting with our Kitchen, Bedroom and Bathroom Studios. Our Studio Partner scheme offers exclusive products, extensive marketing, showroom display support and customer lead generation to hand-picked independent kitchen studios across the UK. Additionally, our Trade Partner programme offers exclusive offers, marketing support and lead generation to local trade counters across the UK. Through the partnership we aim to give trade professionals quick and easy access to Häfele’s extensive product range across the entire country. In addition, Trade Partners will have unrivalled access to the information and support needed to generate sales. What are Häfele’s main aims? The world of hardware provides an ongoing opportunity to evolve and improve. At Häfele UK, we use our expertise to do just that. Our hardware fittings consistently meet quality standards that apply anywhere in the world. It’s a level of quality that allows products to perform better and contribute more in whatever role they play, and while our industry experience is concentrated on construction and building, our main focus is on people. Through our products and professional services, our expertise shows in the form of convenience, dependability and thoughtful functionality. What trends has Häfele experienced in the marketplace recently, and how does it respond to these trends?
FN 340 Pages.indd 143
There is growing demand for solutions that not only look stunning but are also super-functional and integrate seamlessly with customers’ lives. People are looking at how to make the space that they have work harder and demanding innovative storage solutions that hide clutter and maximise space. Yes, finish will always be important to the end customer, but today’s buyer is increasingly influenced by how an item of furniture might function, and how its role in the space might evolve. As a manufacturer as well as a distributor, we are well versed at identifying trends early and developing solutions that reflect our fast-moving tastes and demands. The recent Interzum exhibition highlighted some fascinating new developments, such as the emergence of individualisation – a trend that has taken over the automotive industry in recent years and now looks set to influence homeowners. Developments in furniture design enable solutions to be personalized to individual requirements, enabling homeowners to create something truly unique. What does Häfele have planned for the near – and not-sonear – future? We will continue to grow our partner networks to deliver expert sales support throughout the UK and will continue to expand our solutions offering – whether through our own expert manufacturing or through strategic partnership. Our kitchen, bedroom and bathroom range is constantly evolving and the goal is always to bring the best possible solutions to market, and to delight through style, quality and innovation. Stephen Connolly
Ordorite provides a complete solution to software needs
RETAIL MEETS TECHNOLOGY WITH ORDORITE SOFTWARE Although most people might think there is a large divide between software and the furniture industry, for Ordorite Software CEO Stephen Connolly, this is far from the case. Stephen Connolly grew up in the furniture industry, and from a young age played an active part in his parents’ furniture retail store. From the age of 15, he was often left to run his parents store when they were away on trips and holidays, dealing with deliveries, goods-in, sales and everything in between. “I learnt some valuable lessons from my father, such as margin is essential, and the word discounting should be banned from the dictionary!” says Stephen. Even though Stephen’s first love was furniture retail, he completed degrees in both electronics and software engineering, and pursued a career in technology, rather than following his parents’ footsteps into furniture. Starting out as an assistant engineer with CBE, he then became a senior systems implementer, working alongside some of the largest retail chains throughout Ireland such as Spar and SuperValue. From there, he took up a software position for furniture retailer Arramount, to develop a system that would help them run their business. “It was from this I realised the need for a cloud-based software system specifically built for the furniture industry. With the progression of the cloud, it made perfect business sense to create a system accessible via the web,” Stephen explains. Putting his knowledge of software into practice, Stephen
FN 340 Pages.indd 144
created and founded his first business venture, Goodside Business solutions – a technology consultancy business – with multiple customers nationally and internationally. From this venture, a spin-out company was created, known as Ordorite Software. This new venture saw Stephen bringing his two passions together, furniture retail and software. Ordorite, launched in 2006, initially started in Ireland, and is now used by EZ Living Furniture, the largest Irish furniture retailer across the country. In 2015, the natural progression was to internationalise the business, and the UK market was key to this strategy. Having acquired investments both privately and from Enterprise Ireland, the internationalisation has proven successful in launching the product across the UK, where Ordorite has successfully been implemented in multiple retail stores, namely Brand Interiors. Stephen concludes: “My passion is to constantly innovate and drive the product forward so that it continues to be a leading, cutting edge system for the industry. I think Ordorite has helped reduce the division between furniture and software.” Ordorite welcomes visitors to stand E7 at this month’s Manchester Furniture Show, where it can offer advice on management software. CIFF Founded in 1998, the China International Furniture Fair (CIFF) has been held for 39th editions, with the spring show in Guangzhou in March and the autumn show in Hongqiao, Shanghai, in September. CIFF is well received by the world’s furniture industry as a tangible platform to discover the potential of the the world’s largest furniture market.
The last edition of CIFF Guangzhou hosted 3992 exhibitors, attracting 191,950 visitors from all over the world, 13.7% more than the 2016 edition. The new collaboration initiatives that are started up at every edition of the fair demonstrate the desire to provide much more than a simple exhibition. CIFF is constantly developing, committed to looking for new business opportunities for its exhibitors. As such, significant initiatives have been created, such as the new collaboration agreements with TMall, the B2B e-commerce platform of Alibaba. The 39th edition of CIFF celebrated the debut of The CIFF & Tmall Deco Fashion, and Internet +, used to launch hundreds of new products, online and offline at the same time. The fair also witnessed the announcement of the inauguration of
FN 340 Pages.indd 152
the Pinnacle Awards Asia-Pacific, thanks to the collaboration between CIFF and American Society of Furniture Designers (ASFD). This is a fundamental driver by means of which Chinese design will be able to exploit new opportunities to gain recognition. The first edition of the China Interiors & Decorations Conference, and events like the Global Garden Lifestyle Festival, Design in China (Guangzhou), the Office Environment Pavilion and the 8th Global Office Furniture Outlook interpreted the trends in the sector. CIFF connects the upstream and downstream industry, covering home furniture, home decor, home textiles, outdoor furniture, office furniture, commercial furniture, hotel furniture, furniture machinery and raw materials. The focus now moves on to the 40th
edition of CIFF, which will give new energy to the furniture sector, in an international setting. 2000 quality exhibitors will be on stage to present a variety of product for over 90,000 visitors from all over the world. Impressive events such as the East Design Show, Pinnacle Awards Asiapacific Awarding Ceremony, China Interiors & Decorations Conference and Office Life Pavilion are to make for a rewarding and inspiring visitor experience. Every leading bed company is there showcasing their new products and it’s a great chance to catch up with old friends. I’m already looking forward to the 2017 show.” For the seventh year running there will be Best in Class Awards and the NBF is, once again, on the hunt for this year’s most successful bed manufacturers, suppliers and retailers. There are new additions to the judging panel including Peter Mallinson, AIS; Roy Beagent, Minerva and Jessica Alexander, executive director of the NBF. AUTUMN LONG POINT The Long Point exhibition returns to Long Eaton’s showrooms this autumn, promising new models and fabrics from guild members and guest exhibitors.
Autumn Long Point – a counterpart to the smaller spring edition which takes place each May – provides an opportunity to discover the latest upholstery from a swathe of local manufacturers and suppliers, plus delve into the beds, cabinet and upholstery from the show’s guest exhibitors. Although the fabric upholstery output of the Long Eaton Guild of Furniture Manufacturers is at its heart – indeed, Long Eaton is now a UK Centre for Quality Upholstery Manufacture – Long Point has become a focus for a good deal more over the years, with central venue Harrington Mill playing host to new bedroom, living and dining releases

within a host of guest displays and permanent showrooms. When visiting these showrooms and seeing new ranges lit, dressed and sold to their full potential, it is impossible not to feel closer to the brands than one might at a mainstream exhibition. Unmatched in its local authenticity, fresh with the latest fabric trends, and with good hospitality at every turn, Long Point offers a truly unique buying experience. Over 25 manufacturers will be showing fine high end upholstery, with both new models and fabrics being launched at the show. In addition to the Long Eaton Guild
members such as Duresta and Wade Upholstery, the September show will feature several new exhibitors such as Westbridge Furniture. LONDON FABRIC SHOW The London Fabric Show will return next year after the success of this year’s event, with exhibitors reporting impressive sales to new and existing customers, and visitor numbers substantially up on the year before.
The London Fabric Show is hosted by the BFM (British Furniture Manufacturers Association) and provides UK upholstery, bed and soft furnishing manufacturers with an exclusive opportunity to select high quality fabrics from some of the best fabric producers and suppliers in the UK and Europe, including a large number of high-end Flemish producers. The majority of this year’s exhibitors have already confirmed their attendance for the 2018 show, including Abraham Moon & Sons, Art of the Loom and British Velvets from the UK. From Belgium, the returning companies already include, Ter Molst, Symphony Mills, Boyteks, Escolys and Green Street Textiles. They will be joined by Interfabrics & Antecuir from Spain, with Marsteks, Kets Textil and Adoksan showing from Turkey and Prosetex from Italy.
FN 340 Pages.indd 164
Many of the exhibitors offer the option for buyers to customise their fabric choices and have exclusive designs and colourways produced for them. The wide variety of fabrics on display includes jacquards, chenilles, wools, velvets, tweeds, high performance polyester fabrics, graded faux and real leathers, backing fabrics and FR treatments. The Chelsea FC venue adds panache to the show, whilst the dramatic backdrop of the pitch to the executive boxes and suites allows fabrics to be seen in natural light. It is also a comfortable venue to visit, with Fulham Broadway tube stop only a two-minute walk from the ground, plus on-site parking. Jackie Bazeley, MD of the BFM, says: “We were delighted with the positive feedback we received after this year’s show, from both exhibitors and visitors. We were also extremely pleased with the
large increase in the visitor numbers – it means that we are getting the message across that the London Fabric Show is an essential visit for any manufacturer of upholstery and/or beds in the UK. “Our membership is full of esteemed manufacturers and providing them, and other UK manufacturers, with this incomparable event is an important part of our role. No other show in the UK has the best fabric producers in Europe together in one place. We are already in full swing planning next year’s show and intend to make it the best yet.” W londonfabricshow.uk When? February 2018 (dates TBC) Where? Chelsea FC, London

Rob’s Modern Classics Bretagne, Charltons Furniture
Bretagne as sold today
Although furniture is subject to the vagaries of fashion, some designs endure, proving popular for anything upwards of a decade. In this new series, designer Rob Scarlett investigates what characteristics these ‘modern classics’ have in common, exploring their history, concept and evolution to identify how they deliver long-lasting commercial success. This first instalment looks at one of the forerunners of the painted/ oak top fusion trend … Created in-house back in 2000, Bretagne has proved an enduring success for Somerset’s Charltons Furniture, explains MD Ross Charlton …
THE BASICS Breadth of range The collection started life chiefly as a dining collection with a selection of table sizes, later expanding into more occasional pieces. There are now more than 30 pieces. In the last four years the collection has
FN 340 Pages.indd 166
continued to develop – we offered our Make It Your Own option, which allowed customers to pick from five different oil finishes and/or nine paint options. A wide selection of accessories plus chair fabrics were also available. However, at this year’s January Furniture Show, we took the Bretagne a whole stage further as we successfully launched the next step of the range’s development, which included the launch of 21 new colours. The customer has always had the choice of ordering whatever colours they
want from us, and this remains the case today. Materials and construction The collection started life in Europe, focused heavily on solid oak construction. It has developed through time, as have the construction methods. We now use an engineered panel in our frame panels, constructed with a hardwood plywood for stability, together with 3-4mm of oak on the top and bottom. Btretagne thus benefits from the same structure as most high quality engineered floors.

“
With a history steeped in oak, we knew exactly how unique the timber is and how fantastic it can look”
We have, however, been careful to maintain as many of the traditional craftsmanship skills as possible, without ever compromising on quality simply to achieve cost savings. Key features All our thick frame elements on tables, cabinet tops and other pieces are from 40mm solid oak, without the laminations that are so common on products from the Far East. We have also added many small touches through the years, from softclose door fittings to LED lights, and now variable LED lights. The design and style of the product is a proven winner, allowing it to fit seamlessly into so many different homes. Apart from the solid design and construction, its key feature has become the massive choice of pieces, colours and finishes. Target market Its broad appeal is one of the reasons why Bretagne has been such a longstanding success story. It is a quality product and looks great – buyers include
FN 340 Pages.indd 167
renters and first-time house buyers, as well as the older customer. We also make sure that the Bretagne is affordable. If it wasn’t, then no-one would buy it.
IN DETAIL Conception and inspiration The real inspiration for the Bretagne came from our own customers. In the 1990s we were a very different business, running the old retail outlet at Radstock just outside of Bath and selling furniture from other wholesalers. We also offered a bespoke handmade furniture option so customers could have their own designs made. It was, however, from this that we recognised that there was a real gap in the market that others were missing. We designed and created the Bretagne ourselves, starting with just two tables and a chair, with cabinets added soon after. Oak really does run in our veins. Before anyone even thought of selling furniture, the family timber company AJ Charlton & Sons already operated one of >>>

the largest hardwood sawmills in the country. At one time, the business was supplying oak timber to manufacturers like Ercol, Gainsborough and others. With a history steeped in oak, we knew exactly how unique the timber is and how fantastic it can look. With regards to the material we used, we needed no convincing! Choice of material, colours and design elements The choice of material was obvious for us. We had already been working with oak over many years, including in the oak flooring sector. We understood what the material was all about and how to get
the best out of it. It also helped that in 2000, as we were launching our firstever range in oak, the market was already starting to turn away from the thenubiquitous pine. What has made the Bretagne the market leader it has become today is that it offers what the customers demand – real choice. Originally, the collection was only available with a linseed oil finish. From this we have expanded into offering the lacquered finish, and of course our Monocoat oil finishes. The Monocoat is unique in our industry, giving a very matt European appearance. It also provides a protection like no other, protecting from heat up to 100°C as well as being water-resistant.

Real choice expands into the colour options that we give customers. Several years ago, we started to invest heavily in our UK-based paint shops, and the results have borne fruit. We started with Make It Your Own, giving customers the choice to really customise the product to fit in with their home. As mentioned earlier, the latest version of Bretagne was unveiled at this year’s January Furniture Show. As part of an expanded and refined Make It Your Own, the Bretagne is now available in four different stages – Lacquered, Classic, Kaleidoscope and finally Unlimited. We have introduced 21 stunning new colours, from lemon drizzle to foundry grey. With the Unlimited, it offers exactly what is says, with the customer getting to choose whatever colour they want. Why this change? We listen carefully to our customers, who tell us that they
FN 340 Pages.indd 169
want choice. Offering the alternative of an unpleasant dirty white colour option is no choice at all – painted furniture is now very much part of the interior design that the public are now buying into. It is great to be part of the vanguard responding to current taste and demand. At the same time, we have also ensured that the cost of what we offer is able to match different family budgets. Other developments We are really excited about our new Make It Your Own app. We felt that it was really important that, when the customer is considering their options, they also had the chance to visualise what their proposed combination looks like. This is why we developed the app, designed to work for both online and ecommerce as well as in-store on iPads. With customers no longer having
to guess what a product looks like when it comes through the front door, unsurprisingly this is proving to be a great sales tool. Sales performance and stockist base We continue to experience strong growth for this collection from new customers as well as growing sales from existing stockists. It is worth pointing out that many stockists have been selling the Bretagne for over 10 years, meaning it has survived the test of time through recession and the mass change in supply chain. Marketing and branding We continue to develop our marketing with Bretagne – and indeed all of our collections – by offering strong PoS materials, from brochures to in-store signs. As well as printed media we >>>

are keen to push into technology and see how we can utilise it to sell today’s furniture. Every day we are working on new ideas and initiatives.
colour options). However, we are still seeing great growth from the Bretagne range, and are selling it through some of the country’s best retailers. Sometimes a design can be almost timeless.
LONGEVITY Why such longevity? It has grown with us as a business. It is quality, or else it would not last. We have also constantly improved and developed the range so that it is at the forefront of exactly what the public are looking for. Tastes change, so the Bretagne has had to evolve. This has been key to its success. How long can a range sell for – do you plan for a standard sales arc? Originally, we always thought that the collection had a five-year lifespan (prior to offering the choice of finishes and
FN 340 Pages.indd 170
How much maintenance and development does an ageing range need? Constant. The reason that the Bretagne has been so successful for 17 years is that whilst we have kept to the core design, we have also been tirelessly working on how we can improve and enhance the product. Tastes change – if you do not change with them, then your range will simply remain unsold and unwanted in the warehouse. So we have developed the colour and finish choice, but also constantly improve details, like the new dimmer LEDs.
Does success liberate or restrict a range’s ongoing development? Success gives you confidence to be positive. However, it is important to never forget the essential ingredient of quality. Do you have any further plans for the range? Of course! As we proved at the January show, we are constantly looking at new ideas. There is more on the drawing board. Even with 30-plus pieces, we are still determined to ensure that the Bretagne develops with today’s contemporary homes and trends. How successful do you think the range would be if it was launched today? The market for this sort of style is certainly a great deal more crowded now.

Rob reflects …
However, I am confident that the range would still prove to be a winner. It is a quality product, being sold at a variable price range that suits every budget. Against the vast majority of its current rivals, the Bretagne also offers genuine choice – not only in finishes and colours, but also with the accessories and the 20 different fabric options. Customers rightly want to buy a piece of furniture that is unique and right for their home. The Bretagne can do this, which is why it would flourish even if launched today. What are you working on at the moment, and how does it meet today’s market demands? We have more in development now than ever before. Watch this space!
Ross uses the word timeless a lot through our discussion and it’s this elusive quality the every product developer would wish to bottle. I’d love for every design I created to have a 10-year plus lifespan! What struck me most however is the talk of development and evolution because it’s a key ingredient in building the classic range. Bretagne started with 2-3 pieces and now it has around 30 available, gradually filling the holes which the industry demands. The most recent evolution in offering the colour options is a risky but bold move which catapults a range which on the face might seem somewhat prosaic into a completely different territory. It is a range that is super commercial but can at the flick of a switch (or should I say spray of the gun!) become cutting edge fashionable. I think it’s great to see someone in our commercial industry offering the customer such versatility. At first glance Bretagne isn’t the flashiest of ranges. It doesn’t have a lot of bells and whistles, it doesn’t
jump off the page or demand your attention. But it absolutely doesn’t matter. A range like Bretagne isn’t successful despite these things, it’s successful because of them. This is this backbone of your living or dining room around which everything else sits, start here and then add the frills. This range feels British at its heart. Solid, dependable, understated. Charltons have a winner in Bretagne and I can see it being a round for quite a bit longer if they continue to evolve. THE ANTI-SLOUCHING CHAIR WHICH CREATES A POSITIVE MENTAL ATTITUDE A desk chair designed by a Nottingham Trent University student discourages office workers from slouching and aims to improve their overall health and wellbeing.

eining Jiang, an MA Product Design student, created the Mroo chair to help deskbased staff improve their circulation and posture. It centres on the creation of a seat base which is mounted on a curved axis to allow hip movement of up to 25˚ to mimic the movement of walking. The chair also provides a forward tilt which improves posture and reduces pressure on the lower back, which according to research, helps people maintain a good mood and feel confident. “Research shows that an unhealthy posture caused by prolonged sitting
FN 340 Pages.indd 174
can cause lower back problems, and chronic pain can cause negative feelings such as nervousness, irritability and disappointment,” says Meining. “The situation can become a negative spiral which can affect people’s health and quality of life. So when someone is sat for up eight hours a day it’s important that their furniture is well designed as it can play a key role in their wellbeing.” Although working in an office is considered low-risk, research shows that musculoskeletal disorders are the main health problem for people with a sedentary work-style.
Meining adds: “A well-designed chair can help individuals ease the pain associated with these problems, reduce stress on the spine, increase working effectiveness and improve psychological health.” Grant Baker, senior lecturer in Product Design, says: “The everyday office chair is an important item of furniture for millions of people around the world and its design can play a crucial part in their overall health and wellbeing. “By utilising existing research, Meining has created an innovative product which can help people remain healthy, feel confident and be happy.”

easyturn in three easy moves 1. Unzip the easyturn mattress top 2. Flip it over 3. Zip it back up again. Done. Top quality beds such as ours tend to be more generous with the fillings. This makes for a great sleep but adds to the weight of the mattress, making turnability a real issue for many customers. The standard answer to this is to make the mattress no-turn, which consequently can affect longevity. Well, we’ve turned convention on its head with the ingenious easyturn system. This clever design keeps most of the weight in one section, making the layer that actually needs turning much more manageable. Three models were launched at the Bed Show; we’re sure once you try easyturn you’ll never want to turn back to those pre-revolution days.

STEPHEN MOORE DIRECTOR OF CONSULTANT SERVICES, BFM The British Furniture Manufacturers (BFM) is a trade association that has been representing the interests of the British furniture industry for over 65 years. ow did you enter the trade? I responded to an advert in the Daily Telegraph placed by G Plan seeking to recruit a group manufacturing engineering manager. I saw this position as offering unique challenges and on my third interview I was told that I was in a one horse race but with one more fence to jump – the dreaded presentation to the board. However, all went well and my 30-year career in the industry began. Who is your inspiration? During my early career with Duracell Batteries I was very fortunate to work for plant manager John Kilshaw who inspired not only me but the whole of his management team. He brought a wealth of experience and management skills and teamed it with highly effective leadership qualities, managing a wide range of disciplines through a team made up of very different characters. What has been your career high point so far? I have two! The first was commissioning the manufacture of the Durabeam torch range working with a leading plastic injection tooling and moulding manufacturer, who also specialised in volume component and finished product assembly. Durabeam went on to win the British Quality Awards and was often hailed, most famously by Margaret Thatcher on TV, as an example of British excellence in design and manufacture. The second was securing my first appointment as a board director in 1993 with Cooper-Dauphin (office desking and seating) as operations director for the seating division based in Blackburn. Having total responsibility and accountability for the performance and development of the division provided me with new and invaluable experience which, I hope, I have continued to apply. … and the low point? Working for an MD who was ex-British Leyland and who ruled by fear and bullying in the workplace. His actions and behaviour denied the basic right to dignity at work and destroyed a capable and developing management team. … and the turning point? A phone call, completely out of the blue, from a previous boss offering me the opportunity to work for him again with

“While I am passionate about everything associated with manufacturing, the scope within HR to make a real difference to organisations through the development of people continues to fascinate me” a subsidiary of Airsprung producing dining room sets in Dorset. My wife and I thought about it, not for very long though, and we were off! Describe a typical working day I am very fortunate in that I truly do not have a typical working day. Given the variety of topics and subjects that I lead on with the BFM – EUTR, chain of custody (PEFC and FSC), FFRs, exporting activities, FISP, BSI standards and European commission projects – my time is always devoted to a very varied host of demands – and I like it that way. If you had to start over, you’d probably pursue which career? As group HR manager with Hypnos I knew that if I had to start over I would most likely pursue a HR career path. While I am passionate about everything associated with manufacturing, the scope within HR to make a real difference to organisations through the development of people continues to fascinate me. What date on the business calendar do you most look forward to? The first week in April as this is the start of Salone del Mobile. The BFM, as a trade challenge partner with the Department of International Trade (DIT), draws down grants from the DIT for predominately very small SMEs to exhibit at this international event. It is a condition of the DIT that the BFM are present in Milan to meet with the exhibitors somebody has to do it! What is the most important issue affecting your business right now? As a not-for-profit association, the BFM is precious about membership retention and growth in order to sustain and expand the range of benefits and services it offers to members. Economic uncertainty on the scale that UK businesses are facing today – given Brexit and a general election – will undoubtedly be a threat to membership retention and growth.
Which company do you most look up to? Any company that strives to be the best in all that it does by creating a fair and equitable environment for all employees to contribute towards the business. As well as developing world class products and services which compete successfully in home and/or international markets and which delight the customer in best securing the future prospects of the business and all stakeholders. What do you enjoy most about working in the trade? It is without doubt the people and the passion they have at every level for what they do best. I find that the furniture industry is made up of very capable and proud people who are inspired by opportunities that are continually evolving and pushing the boundaries of the craft, technology and product design. Leave us with an industry anecdote! Whilst conducting a factory tour with two HSE inspectors I pointed out the new electric staple guns that we were trialling. As we observed the operator, who had now broken into a virtuoso performance, I noticed that one of the inspectors was holding the side of his face and both his face and hand were smeared in blood. He confirmed my fear that he had been hit by a ricocheted staple and it was agreed he should visit the local surgery. The inspector was fine but the company was issued with an improvement notice!
