Design For Print: Two Halves of Print
Two Halves of Print is a guide to printing and finishing techniques for all students at Leeds College of Art. It will be given as a hand out at the end of inductions so that students can take away a proper bound book with step-by-step instructions on how to do all the techniques. This way, they can be reminded of the order of things in case they forget, or if they are a bit shy and don’t want to ask the technicians. Because it isn’t just A4 printer paper stapled together, students are more likely to keep it as a useful reference. It is separated into two halves as the name suggests: Processes and Finishes. It is a Z-bound case bound book so that the two halves are separated on each side but kept together by the cover.

Quicksand Regular Quicksand Bold
Layout The majority of the layout consists of a double page spread for each process with written instructions on the left and corresponding images to illustrate them on the right. Every two double page spreads, there are a couple of samples that demonstrate the previous two processes mentioned so that students can easily see the outcome they are trying to achieve. Typeface and colour The typeface used is Quicksand which is friendly but informative. The whole book is screen printed in flourescent crimson and green to demonstrate the fact that you can print spot colours by screen printing.

Trials Screen printing the whole book was a challenge and that meant that time management was key to allow for mistakes and accidents such as the smudges print top left. Stock choice This was important as the stock originally chosen (Snowdon, above right) was decided to be too thick in one of the crits. The choice of buckram and colour of ink was crucial too. By trying out the pink flourescent (above) the decision was made to use flourescent crimson for a more gender neutral and less garish colour.

The book was originally going to be stitched in the centre so that it could be made into a spiral when fanned out but this wasn’t feasable so instead the concept changed slightly and it was made into a z-bind. It was going to be in a slipcase but it was decided in a crit that it wasn’t necessary as the buckram case bind would protect the book suitably.

Stock The cover is buckram bound, with screen printed titles for consistency. The stock inside is Zerkall off-white which holds the ink well without show-through and the fact that it is off-white makes the flourescent easier to read.

Testing
Experiments Earlier in the brief, trials using the different techniques proved to be useful when producing the book as they could be recreated quickly and to a higher standard for the print samples inside the book.
