chapter 1 Once upon a time there was a girl named Dulcinea. She lived with her father in a house on the edge of a large forest. They had a cow for milk, chickens for eggs, and fruit trees and currant bushes in the garden. They also had a small vegetable patch where they grew potatoes and carrots. Anything else they needed they bought at the market in town.

Dulcinea often helped her father with the chores. But more often she played with the animals in the garden. Her father didn’t mind. He loved his daughter more than anything, and if she was happy, then so was he.

But he was very strict about one thing. “Dulcinea, you must never go into the forest. Promise me. That’s where the witch lives...” “Have you seen her?” Dulcinea asked. “No one has ever seen the witch!” said her father. “But everyone knows she’s there. She lives in a big castle, surrounded by a deep moat. Monsters swim in that moat. And sometimes the witch roams through the forest. You must never go in there!” So Dulcinea promised.
