THE TALE OF THE TINY MAN

Translated by Julia Marshall

There was once a tiny man. He was very lonely. Even though he was kind, no one cared for him much. People thought he was too small and possibly a bit slow. They also thought his hat was ugly.

It didn’t help that he raised his hat to everyone he met. No one was impressed. Dogs growled and old men tripped him up when he went for his morning walk.

At night, the tiny man felt so lonely that he cried. Why doesn’t anyone like me? I’m a kind person, he thought.

One day, at the first signs of spring, he pinned a note to a tree that said FRIEND WANTED. Then his name and address. He sat on the steps and waited. And waited and waited, for ten days and ten nights. By day, the sun shone and the first snowdrops pushed up through the earth. At night, the blackbirds sang so hauntingly it made him cry. But no one wanted to be his friend. They hardly noticed the tiny man on the steps.
