Denver is home to quite a few notably awesome geek events, and November’s Rocky Mountain Con is no exception. It’s already pretty well known that the geek community takes care of each special guest other, but the RMC has made it their top priority with the Con. A portion of all of the proceeds from the event go towards AuroraRise.org, a non-profit that benefits the victims and families of the 2012 Aurora Theater Shooting. The RMC is aiming to double its attendance this year, which will not only bring more notoriety to the Denver area and its involvement in geek culture, but more attention to the good we can all do for each other. Special guests, a chock-full Artists’ Alley, and incredible cosplayers make this event one you won’t want to miss, and the early-November weather is mighty fine… Get yourself out to the Rocky Mountain Con, support a great cause, and geek out on all that Denver has to offer.

the martian When astronaut Mark Watney finds himself stranded on Mars after fate dealt him a hard blow, it is his intelligence, wit, and humor that keeps him alive. After a dust storm nearly kills him and the other members of the Ares 3 crew, they are forced to evacuate the planet. Thinking that Watney has died in the mayhem, the crew makes the difficult decision to leave his body behind. What ensues is a story of tenacity, ingenuity, and a lot of potatoes. The book is an incredible read, and well worth the time. As a bestseller, it has now been adapted for the big screen. With Matt Damon at the helm, it is sure to be as captivating as the book, but with the big budget of a film studio keeping you at the edge of your seat. It opens early next month, so get your badge of support ready and snag an early seat to this fall’s blockbuster hit.

DOCTOR WHO RETURNS Peter Capaldi brings the role to life in his second go as the 12th Doctor for BBC’s Doctor Who, returning this month for its 9th season. He’s met mixed reviews for his performance, but seems to have the determination to stick it out and develop into a role that is so coveted. What he lacks in the action-hero aspect, he makes up for with the terror that can be induced with those piercing eyes. Also returning this season is his sidekick and companion in time travels, Clara Oswald, played by the lovely and talented Jenna Coleman. While the age difference between the characters means less of a love interest comes into play, there are plenty of opportunities to see the type of chemistry that typified the good old days of Doctor Who: a respectful and friendly banter between two strong-willed people. No matter which way you lean on the 12th Doctor’s status, the new season is sure to spark interest to see where the Tardis takes us.

When Bob’s Burgers first hit the air, nobody suspected it would be as wildly popular as it is now, or that it would garner a nomination for a Teen Choice Award in its first year. Fast forward to 2015, and the show is not only thriving, with 20 awards nominations and a Primetime Emmy Award for “Outstanding Animated Program”, but gearing up for the release of the 5th season. The secret to the show’s success seems to stem from two things: the musical numbers that hold up integral pieces of the plot lines, and the ability to relate to at least a small piece of each of the show’s characters. One can only hope that Loren Bouchard keeps up the great work and brings us Fox’s next long-running comic hit.
Ingredients: - 1 leek, cut into half-moons - ½ pint of cherry tomatoes, halved - 1 clove of garlic - 2 Tbs olive oil - 1 pound of ground beef - mozzarella cheese - 4 hamburger buns - salt and pepper
Begin by sautéing the leeks and garlic in the olive oil. When the leek is softened, add in the tomatoes and sauté until the tomatoes are soft. Keep warm until burgers are cooked. Form the ground beef into four patties and grill to desired temperature, melting cheese on top to finish. Lightly toast buns over grill. Put the burger right on the bun, top with the sautéed vegetables, and ENJOY!

ERICK SCARECROW Erick Scarecrow, the artist behind ESCToy.com, hails from Queens, New York. A cross-section of vibrant and gritty, the borough helped shape his artistic talents, while he pulled influence from comic books, video games, and Eastern culture. It wasn’t until a chance job offer came his way that toys were on his radar. As he tells it, “I had been unemployed for a while and was working with an employment counselor. She found this job with a toy manufacturer and said, “You know, I think you’d be great at this job. You should apply.” I was really hesitant, and the job was originally pattern making, and I didn’t have any real experience in it. But I got the job! And that’s how I started working with toys” A few years later, the company downsized and he found himself out of a job. In evaluating all of the production contacts he’d amassed over the years, he realized that he could get the toys made not only for himself, but for other emerging artists. And thus began the now decade-long career of ESC Toys. While assisting others in their solo projects, he began working on his own as well.
Today he works with independent game designers, and recently wrapped up his third successful Kickstarter campaign. Two of the campaigns, including his most recent, are figures from the critically acclaimed game Hotline Miami – the Jacket Figure and the Biker Figure. As if wrapping up all that comes with the production and shipping of the successful Biker campaign isn’t enough, he has three more projects in the pipeline for the remainder of 2015. This fall he will partner with the developers of Starbound, Urban Rivals, and Hatoful Boyfriend to produce toys for their respective games. Past projects have included work for Uncharted 3 and The Last of Us. In contrast to how many artists work without input from others, he says “What I’m doing is different. I have the chance to listen to what they are saying and make changes that suit us both along the way.” He’s also got plans to breathe new life into an old project with 9DKP Anime’s Cats vs. Zombies, something he has put a lot of heart and soul into. Whatever it is he’s working on, whether it’s game related or not, we’re excited to see the innovative, creative, and stunning pieces he’s sharing with the world.

LORTs programs work to inspire, educate, and promote diversity by growing women in technology while championing the cause of equal respect for all genders and sexual orientations online as well as in real life. Be it skill, race, religion, sexual preference or disability, LORT believes that everyone is equal in gaming.
