From the artistic Director Happy holidays and welcome to the world premiere of Donald Margulies’ Coney Island Christmas. This particularly special project began a couple of years ago when the idea for a holiday show started to percolate in the artistic office. After considering many plays for which we had nostalgic fondness, we ultimately decided that we needed something entirely new. Geffen Playhouse founder Gil Cates was struck with the less than obvious but ingenious idea to approach Donald Margulies to create a holiday show for Los Angeles. And the rest is another piece of Geffen history. Margulies tells a universal story with Coney Island Christmas, a portrait of American life that turns tradition on its head while crossing generational and religious lines. The play’s poignancy resides in the reminder that the spirit of a holiday is about coming together while still celebrating each other’s differences. We are so pleased to reunite Margulies and director Bart DeLorenzo. The two artists previously collaborated on Shipwrecked!, which appeared on the Geffen stage in 2008. As he did with the fantastical world DeLorenzo brought to life in that production, he has once again gathered a team of amazing designers and a powerhouse ensemble to guide us through the Coney Island of the 1930s. I have always believed that what makes a holiday story — be it a play, a film or a book — is its ability to transport us to a happier, simpler time. When the story works and we are in fact transported, there is an inevitability of remembering what we have lost and truly appreciating what we continue to have. Good will towards humankind, a spirit of generosity, nostalgia — these are the things the holidays are about, and Margulies captures them all as only a writer of his caliber can. The Geffen family wishes you and yours a very happy holiday season.

FRANK G. MANCUSO It is my pleasure to welcome you to the second show of the season in the Gil Cates Theater. It is with great pride and joy that we bring you Coney Island Christmas. It was my dear friend Gil Cates’ dream to create an annual holiday show for the Geffen Playhouse, and through our new play development program, we were able to commission Pulitzer Prize winner Donald Margulies to create just that. Gil and Donald worked closely as they brainstormed ideas and inspiration for what this new play would become, and were both thrilled to find Grace Paley’s short story as inspiration. Sadly, Gil passed away before he was able to see Coney Island Christmas fully realized on our stage. As such, Donald chose to dedicate this show to Gil, and we are all touched by that thought and join him in remembering our founder and celebrating his dream coming true. The holidays are a time for gratitude as well as celebration. With that in mind, I would like to take this opportunity to thank each of you who support our work here at the Geffen Playhouse. It has allowed us to create remarkable growth both on our stages as well as within our community outreach programs. We now produce eight shows between our two stages to entertain, educate and engage you. Our reach into the community now extends to children, students, seniors and veterans, bringing the number of people we serve to more than 22,500. None of this would be possible without your support, generosity and good wishes — and for that we are grateful. I wish you and your families a joyful holiday and look forward to seeing you at the theater in the new year. Respectfully yours,

An unlikely series of events has led two of the world’s most gifted sleight-of-hand artists, Derek DelGaudio (2011 Close-Up Magician of the Year) and Helder Guimarães (2011 Parlour Magician of the Year), to share a stage. Fresh from sold-out performances at the Magic Castle, DelGaudio and Guimarães have joined forces with director Neil Patrick Harris to present Nothing to Hide, a unique and unprecedented theatrical event. Abandoning the antiquated notions of a traditional magic show, Nothing to Hide takes the audience on an imaginary journey through a series of diverse and engaging vignettes brought to life solely from the words and hands of the two masterful magicians.

A Tale of Two Mensches:

Why (and How) Donald Margulies wrote a Christmas play by amy levinson

Geffen Playhouse founder Gil Cates and Playwright Donald Margulies

ACT I The birth of an idea Often when I speak to writers about the genesis of their plays, I am surprised at what inspires their ideas. But this idea, to have one of America’s preeminent Jewish playwrights — a writer who often explores Jewish themes in his work — write a Christmas play, was an idea that started with our late founder and producing director Gil Cates. Of course, the seeds for this unlikely commission were planted long ago, when Cates directed Margulies’ play P4  PERFORMANCES  MAGAZINe

Collected Stories. This production, which went on to become a film for PBS, marked the first of many collaborations and the beginning of a profound friendship between the two men. Following the extraordinary success of that play, the theater produced Dinner with Friends, Shipwrecked! An Entertainment: The Amazing Adventures of Louis de Rougemont and Time Stands Still, which was commissioned by the Geffen and had its world premiere here before opening on Broadway. The question Margulies couldn’t help but ask in regards to a Christmas commission, though, was, “Why me?” And for Gil and the Geffen, that answer was crystal clear. The idea arose during the run of Margulies’ play Shipwrecked! The play was originally commissioned by South Coast Repertory to be

part of their theater for young audiences, but it ultimately evolved into a fairytale far more suited for adults. It explored the life of Louis De Rougemont, an infamous teller of tall tales who was later called forward to defend the truth of his adventures. It was this play, at once so whimsical and deeply felt, that struck a chord — the likes of which an audience had never seen from Donald Margulies. This was the kernel that lead to Coney Island Christmas. Now while the artistic team at the Geffen saw the obvious correlation between the two, Margulies didn’t quite see the request for this play coming. When asked to tell the story of the phone call he got from Cates about this particular commission, he recounts it as follows:

Samantha Mathis and Linda Lavin in Collected Stories by Donald Margulies. Photo by Craig Schwartz Photography.

Gil: Donald — I’ve been thinking about commissioning a play for the Geffen to run during the holidays, and I want you to write a big Christmas show for the whole family. Donald (joking): Gil, if I’m going to write you a Christmas show, you know it’s going to be a Jewish Christmas show, right? Gil (serious): Perfect! And go ahead and make it really big … a spectacle! Tasked with that direction, Margulies was essentially set loose to find the idea that would launch his writing process. In culling material, he was reminded of a short story called The Loudest Voice by Grace Paley, an eight-page tale of a young Jewish girl named Shirley Abramowitz. Margulies took Paley’s gem and built upon it, creating an entire community who must learn to navigate the cultural melting pot that was New York in the 1930s — and during Christmas no less. Was it big? Yes — Margulies’ new work included musical numbers, two holiday pageants, 17 actors and a Coney Island skyline complete with a Ferris wheel.

ACT II you can take the jew out of brooklyn ... Jewish themes are abundant in the history of Margulies’ work, and the chance to write a holiday show that was not non-denominational, but rather multidenominational provided yet another opportunity to explore one of his favorite subjects. In one of his earlier works, The Model Apartment, Margulies examines what it means to be the child of Holocaust survivors. In Collected Stories his central character’s writing is defined by her Jewish experience in New York. In his adaptation of Sholem Asch’s God of Vengeance, he explores the complicated world of the Jewish immigrant

experience in 1922 through the eyes of a brothel owner who wants nothing more than to raise a nice Jewish girl in the midst of his own seedy business practices. The Jewish identification of Margulies’ characters gives them roots in the past, sometimes positive associations of community and purpose, and sometimes negative ones such as persecution and an abandonment of belief. And in Coney Island Christmas, in the midst of holiday songs, humor and heartwarming stories of the past, Margulies still poses questions about assimilation and what it means to be both Jewish and American. Shirley, at twelve years old, is asked by her parents to recognize and honor her history and in turn, she asks her parents to see the difference between participating and assimilating. So having found his inspiration and agreeing on a deadline, all that was left was the writing of the play. The hard part. PErFORMANCEs  MAGAZINE P5

ACT IIi A new play from the page to the stage Margulies let us know last November, after hearing about the sudden passing of Gil Cates, that he would have the play ready for the following holiday season, and further, that he was dedicating this work to his old friend. He set about writing and by January 2012 the Geffen received the first draft. Margulies’ writing process for all of his plays is as follows: He gets a draft out of his system, the one he calls the “bad rough draft.” Now, to most readers, this ‘bad’ draft is still a good play but what this means for him is that there are sections that are only in idea form — broad sketches rather than specific dialogue, characters who have only begun to be fleshed out, a general direction of the plot, but maybe not every beat. At this point, Margulies gives the draft to one or two people to critique and then goes into a rewrite. Gil was always struck with Margulies’ ability to sort through notes P6  PERFORMANCES  MAGAZINe

with a discerning ear. He takes what is useful and discards the rest, without being defensive or dismissive where his own work is concerned. After going through this process with Coney Island Christmas, Margulies set back to work on the second draft and emerged in March with a version that was read in front of an audience. In the months that followed we were able to schedule an additional reading that was attended by staff and close friends so that Margulies and director Bart DeLorenzo could continue to hone the script and make decisions about the future production. For Margulies, these readings are an essential part of his process wherein he learns what the play needs in order to be ready for first rehearsal. At the point at which this article goes to print, we have just begun the rehearsal process, where the work on this new play will surely continue. Having Margulies here for the fifth time in the Geffen’s short history is our own version of holiday joy, and we take the bitter with the sweet as Margulies points out that the man who commissioned the piece will never have a chance to see it. But within the play he inspired Margulies to write, Gil Cates will forever be remembered as the man who didn’t think twice about commissioning one of his favorite Jewish writers to pen a Christmas play.

THE GIFT

Written by Joanna Murray-Smith Directed by Maria Aitken american premiere from the playwright ofthe geffen hit, The female of the species

Acclaimed Australian playwright Joanna Murray-Smith brings this comedic American premiere to the Geffen Playhouse. When two couples meet while vacationing at a ritzy resort, they instantly transition from strangers to the best of friends. Despite their almost comical differences — Ed and Sadie are middle-aged, rich and traditional, while Martin and Chloe are young artists glowing with their potential to change the world — they find themselves spending the rest of their week together. When one seemingly inconsequential event throws both their lives into a tailspin, the couples find themselves wrestling with a moral dilemma: while it’s human nature to want what you don’t have, is it unnatural to abandon something that you do? This provocative new work draws audiences in with a beguiling hilarity that gives way to an unsettling twist, posing searing questions rather than providing comfortable answers.

Written by david mamet Directed by randall arney pulitzer prize winning playwright

August Strindberg’s classic play about sex, greed and manipulation is adapted by the modern master of such tantalizing topics: Neil LaBute. This scandalous work chronicles the flirtation and seduction between the wealthy lady of the house and one of her father’s footmen, capturing the timeless consequences of passion and power.

Geffen Playhouse Artistic Director Randall Arney takes a fresh look at Pulitzer Prize winner David Mamet’s groundbreaking work about three misguided misfits plotting the theft of a rare coin collection. This defining work negotiates explosive humor, frenetic energy and surprising tenderness and has not seen a major Los Angeles production in over a decade.

endless possibilities:

shining a light on our communities Being an integral part of the greater Los Angeles

community has been a priority since the Geffen Playhouse’s inception. Our founder, Gil Cates, envisioned a professional theater space where everyone was not only welcomed, but genuinely encouraged to attend regardless of their circumstances and resources. This commitment to access still serves as the primary driving force behind one of the Geffen’s most robust outreach programs: Lights Up. Lights Up, which was designed to engage populations who have the least access to the arts, currently works with more than 45 community organizations, serving constituents ranging from veterans to seniors, ESL classes to group homes and victims of abuse to Skid Row residents. Every year, this program has expanded both in breadth and depth; while we continue to welcome new organizations as community partners, we are also identifying already existing partners with whom we can develop more comprehensive relationships. All of our participating groups receive complimentary tickets to Geffen Playhouse’s world-class performances, along with study guides unique to each production. An example of a collaboration going more in depth is our work with Urban Possibilities (UP), a non-profit that uses the power of art and culture to change the lives of homeless and working poor people in Los Angeles. In addition to inviting the UP community to attend performances and providing show-specific study guides, Geffen Playhouse teaching artists are attending UP meetings and teaching improvisation classes focusing on the development of life skills like being present in the moment, speaking confidently in public, thinking on your feet and collaborating creatively with a partner. Together with UP and dozens of other Lights Up groups, the Geffen Playhouse continues to take the merits of live theater beyond the stage and into the diverse populations of our community. Linda Bernstein Rubin and her husband, Tony Rubin

I love being on the Geffen Playhouse Board. I believe passionately that theater can transform lives, and I have seen the Geffen Playhouse do just that as they expose and introduce the wonder and joy of this art form to so many… — linda bernstein rubin, geffen playhouse board member

Linda Bernstein Rubin is a wonderful person and an incredibly valued member of the Geffen Playhouse Board as well as an inaugural member of the Chairman’s Circle. We sincerely thank Linda and her husband Tony for their extraordinary support of the Geffen Playhouse! Linda Rubin graduated from NYU’s Gallatin Division having studied with Larry Moss and Stella Adler. She then appeared in the Broadway production of Dance with Me, directed by Joel Zwick (whose work was also seen at the Geffen Playhouse when he helmed Hershey Felder’s composer trilogy). She appeared in numerous off-Broadway productions before moving to Los Angeles to appear in movies and other productions, all while continuing her studies with Ms. Adler. For many years, Ms. Rubin was a co-producer with Appian Way Productions, whose mission was to mount West Coast premieres of exciting theatrical works. These days, Ms. Rubin devotes much of her time to her children and their school (Windward) along with other charitable and community organizations about which she is passionate, among them Violence Intervention Program (Board Member), a Los Angeles based organization that provides aroundthe-clock support services to abused and assaulted women, children and the elderly; the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.; American Friends of the Israel Museum; The Everychild Foundation (founding and former Board Member). When asked what she loves about the Geffen Playhouse, Ms. Rubin had a number of wonderful things to say: “I love being on the Geffen Playhouse Board. I believe passionately that theater can transform lives, and I have seen the Geffen Playhouse do just that as they expose and introduce the wonder and joy of this art form to so many.” In addition, Linda loves Backstage at the Geffen. The evening raises funds for the theater’s education and outreach programs, which provide underserved children, seniors and veterans the opportunity to come to the theater, often for the first time.
