THE AUDREY SKIRBALL KENIS THEATER AT THE GEFFEN PLAYHOUSE
radiance: the passion of marie cure
From the Producing Director
WELCOME TO THE GEFFEN PLAYHOUSE Alan Alda has been a friend for many years. I have admired his work as an actor on stages and screens large and small. What always astonishes me is the passion with which he infuses every role he plays, an energy that is so palpable that it reaches out to audiences and makes them feel as though they have seen the world through his impassioned eyes.
So it came as no surprise to me when Alan’s play Radiance: The Passion of Marie Curie contained this same fervor. Prior to even reading the play, Alan’s enthusiasm for his subject was easy to see, and I would be hard pressed to find another writer more in love with his protagonist. I read an early draft of the play and as one would expect, each page was infused with his excitement and love for Marie Curie and her work. After writing five movies, many television shows and two best selling books, Alan Alda has come home to where he belongs: the theater. We quickly found Alan’s enthusiasm to be contagious. Tony Award winner Daniel Sullivan, a three-time Geffen alum, was the ideal director for this project as he has a keen sense about, and love for, new plays. Dan became fascinated with Alan’s play and the two, along with an extraordinary cast, have made Radiance into a wonderful evening of theater about a great woman of science. As always, Sullivan has assembled the best designers imaginable including Tom Lynch (Scenic Designer), Rita Ryack (Costume Designer), Daniel Ionazzi (Lighting Designer), Jon Gottlieb (Sound Designer) and John Boesche (Projection Designer). They have transformed our intimate Audrey Skirball Kenis Theater into multiple locations of another time. We are so pleased to have the opportunity to produce this world premiere. We continue our mission of new play development and production with a play that is sure to give you insight into the life of an extraordinary figure. See you at the theater,

FROM THE CHAIRMAN FRANK G. MANCUSO
It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Audrey Skirball Kenis Theater for the first show of its 2011/2012 season, Radiance: The Passion of Marie Curie. Playwright Alan Alda and director Daniel Sullivan have prepared a truly illuminating, profound story about the incredible life of Marie Curie and her extraordinary discoveries – both scientific and personal. The Audrey Skirball Kenis Theater, which we affectionately call the Audrey, has emerged as a space with a personality all its own, and serves as a perfect complement to our Gil Cates Theater. The Audrey offers us countless opportunities to expand and diversify our programming, and we take much pride in the works showcased there by playwrights including Jane Anderson, Neil LaBute, and now Alan Alda, among many others. Therefore, I am delighted to share that this season we have introduced a new subscription model that now offers subscribers access to all shows in both theaters. The response thus far has been incredible, and we are so grateful that our wonderful Geffen Playhouse supporters have responded with such enthusiasm. In the spirit of offering something for everyone here at the Geffen Playhouse, we surely cannot forget our younger generation of theatergoers. That’s why our Geffen education partners the Story Pirates have a treat for students from elementary through high school, with a Radiance-inspired play, appropriately entitled Brilliance! When they’re not here at the Geffen Playhouse, the merry troupe of Story Pirates helm an educational tour at schools throughout Los Angeles where they work with students in various grade levels to write plays, many of which the Story Pirates select to perform in their delightfully silly yet smart style. We are privileged to work with such a dedicated group of performers whose admirable purpose aligns so perfectly with everything we stand for at the Geffen Playhouse: to instill in children and young adults a deep appreciation of artistic expression, and of course, the joy of theater. For more information on Story Pirates or to purchase tickets to Brilliance!, please visit geffenplayhouse.com or call Jessica Brusilow in the Development Department, at 310.208.6500 x141. Thank you again for joining us this evening. I now invite you to sit back, relax and bask in Radiance. Respectfully yours,

hero worship: Playwright Alan Alda discusses the challenges and passions of Marie Curie
Alan Alda
Marie Curie
Alan Alda has a great passion for science. He is one of
those rare people who can take a subject of great intellectual complexity and deliver it to an audience with as much raw emotion as if he were telling a great love story. But truth be told, his relationship with Madame Marie Curie is just that: a love story between writer and subject that has only intensified as he delved further into his new play during rehearsals. Geffen Literary Manager and Dramaturg Amy Levinson had the opportunity to sit down with Alan Alda and discuss his writing process, his love of science and most importantly, his ever growing admiration for Madame Marie Curie. AL: What sparked your desire to write this play? Why this subject, in this medium? AA: About four years ago I thought of putting together a reading of Marie Curie’s letters for the World Science Festival in New York. Then I found out her letters are stored in the French National Library in Paris but they’re still radioactive. You have to sign a release before they’ll let you touch them. So, I switched to Einstein. But in researching Marie Curie’s life, I had come to realize how tremendously dramatic and potent her story is, especially P4 PERFORMANCES MAGAZINe
the years between her two Nobel Prizes, from 1903 to 1911. From the beginning, I thought of it as a play. A character with a powerful desire to accomplish a goal with tough obstacles to overcome is, of course, the essence of drama. Marie couldn’t have had a more deeply felt need to unravel the mysteries of nature, and she couldn’t have had more chilling obstacles thrown in her path. But she never gave up. That’s why she’s become my own personal hero. You go down many blind alleys and dead ends when you write a play — it’s part of the
process. But whenever I come up against an obstacle now, I think of Marie and what she overcame and it pulls me through. I’m lucky I’ve had her and I’m lucky I’ve had Dan Sullivan, who is without doubt one of the best directors in the world. AL: I never had the opportunity to read the earliest drafts — I think the first draft I saw was maybe 18 months ago and at that point you had already implemented the theatrical device in which the actors stay on the stage throughout the piece. Was this something you had conceived of from the beginning? And what was the impetus for this type of framing? AA: It’s how I saw the play from the beginning. The actors come out on stage to tell us a story. They watch the play along with us and when it’s time to play a scene, they frankly get up and become the characters. To me, there’s something both theatrical and personal about that. I think it makes the relationship between actors and audience a little more communal, more collaborative.
radiance: the passion of marie cure
BY AMY LEVINSON AL: In terms of the obstacles that Marie Curie faced, history would suggest that once they ran out of other walls to put in her way, they resorted to accusing her of being Jewish, and I was surprised by the way this was wielded as a weapon. Can you touch on this a bit? AA: There was a strong streak of antiSemitism in France then. Oddly, this was in part tied to a belief that they had lost the Franco-Prussian war as God’s punishment because France had turned away from Catholicism. Even three or four decades later, that feeling was still in the air. It fed the anti-Semitism that led to the Dreyfus Affair. If you wanted to destroy someone’s reputation in those days, you could hint that they were probably Jewish. AL: What was her religious background? AA: She was brought up Catholic but didn’t practice any faith as an adult. AL: In reading about Paul, Marie’s second love, his friends and colleagues noted that his home environment never encouraged or cultivated his scientific study. In some way, do you feel Paul’s domestic life was a microcosm of what Marie had to contend with on a macrocosmic level? AA: I do, and in fact, when her affair with Paul Langevin became public and turned into a scandal, the press began to say that she wasn’t such a genius after all — that in fact, it was really Pierre (her husband and colleague) who had done all the work. AL: And this was based on the fact that she was a woman? That she was involved in infidelity? AA: She had so many things going against her. Certainly, the fact that she was a woman was one. It was often taken for granted then that a woman’s role was to be seductive and pleasing to a man. Marie was proud of her intellect and she wanted to share her discoveries. And she wanted the same credit a man would enjoy. The scandal over her affair was an added problem and it had a peculiar twist. It was pretty much expected then that Frenchmen would have mistresses. But these affairs had rules. They needed to
remain private and above all, the mistress was not to hold a social station equal to the man’s wife. That would be humiliating to the wife. In fact, a year or two after Paul and Marie ended their affair, Paul took up with his secretary and his wife said nothing about it. This was a woman, apparently, who was far enough down on the social scale. Marie was too far up. Marie also suffered from the xenophobia in the air then. At first, France was proud of her and considered her a French genius, but when the scandal broke, she suddenly became the Polish immigrant who had set out to destroy French motherhood and family. In some people’s minds, the idea that a foreigner might prevent a French man from impregnating his wife and making more French children was an act against the whole country. She had so many obstacles to overcome. One of the biggest, of course, was the threat to her health from years of plunging her hands into radioactive materials. Early on in her research, her fingers became stiff and cracked and eventually (after a surprisingly long life, at the age of 66) she died of aplastic anemia. There was probably no way to avoid radiation poisoning. She and Pierre didn’t realize at first how dangerous their work was and that their lab was covered with radioactive dust. While I was researching the play, I visited the Curie Institute in Paris. The young man showing me around took me over to the wall where, behind a glass panel, was a page of her journal from the day she discovered radium. He swung open the glass and held a Geiger counter to it. It clicked like a tap dancer. AL: So you didn’t handle her radioactive letters, but you did go to Paris? AA: I did — to get a feel for what her life was like. I wanted to be accurate about her science, but I also wanted us to relate to her in the most human terms I could. She’s not a disembodied intellect — she’s warm-blooded and alive with the desires and passions and flaws we all have. I wanted to imagine the simple details of her life that would make her real to me. Once, in Paris, I walked and half-ran from the Sorbonne where she
taught to the apartment she kept with Paul — just to see how out of breath she’d be when she got there. AL: Here is another question on the process of writing, understanding that no two writers work in the same way. You have rewritten an enormous amount. Now, having been in rehearsal, how do you come back to the script? What do you glean from rehearsal that furthers the development of the play and brings you back to it? AA: I never really leave it. What’s nice is that through all the reading I’ve done about her, there’s always a channel in my head open to Marie and the world in which she lived. I’ve written scenes in taxis, on airplanes and sometimes even waiting to cross the street — I’ll take out my iPhone and email myself an idea for a couple of lines. But there’s nothing like watching an actor live through a moment in rehearsal to make you realize you can cut a scene to its essence. AL: As someone who has acted on the stage, and often in new plays, you are no stranger to collaborating with writers in production. What was one of the best experiences you have had as an actor working on a new play? AA: I brought a book about the physicist Richard Feynman to Gordon Davidson and we asked Peter Parnell to write a play based on Feynman’s life. We thought we’d be on the stage within a year. But Feynman was a very hard character to capture and it took six years and several completely different versions of the play. Peter was indefatigable. He never gave up. So I guess Peter and Marie are both heroes of mine. AL: And how is it now, being on the other side of the equation? AA: It really is thrilling to watch wonderful actors take a scene three steps further than what you’ve imagined it could be. And Dan Sullivan is a rare earth element among directors. He’ll come up with staging that’s not in the script and turn to me to see if I’m all right with it and I’ll say, “Am I all right with it? Are you kidding me? I’m in awe at your feet.” PErFORMANCEs MAGAZINE P5
