RUINED

FROM THE PRODUCING DIRECTOR

WELCOME TO THE GEFFEN PLAYHOUSE WELCOME TO THE GEFFEN’S 2010/2011 SEASON. I think we have it all this year: new plays by some of America’s best writers, musical offerings and themes that range from international to sexual politics. This will be a vibrant season.

Our first play, Lynn Nottage’s Ruined, was the recipient of the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for drama. Our extraordinary production is helmed by the very talented Kate Whoriskey, and is nothing short of breathtaking. Set in a brothel in the Congo, it is an exploration of what violence leaves in its wake and how victims learn to endure and adapt. What is truly unique and amazing about this play is that in spite of the horrors that Nottage depicts, there is an undeniable spirit of hope that emerges. With the help of original music and indomitable women characters led by Mama Nadi, these are survivors of war as much as they are victims of it. Kate Whoriskey participated in this production of Ruined on many levels. First, as the director and long time collaborator of Lynn Nottage, she contributed to the development of this play from its inception, including a trip to Uganda to interview Congolese refugees first hand. Having directed every incarnation of the play up to this point, Kate made sure to assemble a cast of brilliant actors as well as some of the finest designers American theater has to offer. Included in this list are Lighting Designer Peter Kaczorowski, Costume Designer Paul Tazewell, Set Designer Derek McClane, Composer Dominic Kanza and Sound Designers/Music Directors Rob Milburn and Michael Bodeen. They have encapsulated the relative safety of life within the walls of Mama Nadi’s and the ominous, ever-present danger outside her always-open door. In addition to the steady hand Kate held over this production, she has been an integral part of both the national and international cycle of this play helping to make our first co-production with Seattle’s Intiman Theatre possible. Our plays this year have been coined ‘proudly provocative’ and we believe that Ruined is a perfect beginning for what’s to come this season. Welcome back! See you at the theater,

FROM THE CHAIRMAN FRANK G. MANCUSO

IT IS MY PLEASURE TO WELCOME YOU TO THE NEW SEASON IN OUR beautiful Gil Cates Theater at the Geffen Playhouse. We are very excited about the new season. Gil Cates, Randall Arney and our creative team have put together an incredibly exciting program that we hope you will enjoy. We are thrilled to welcome both some wonderful playwrights who have worked with us in the past – Jane Anderson, Hershey Felder, and Neil LaBute and the newer voices of Pulitzer Prize winners Tracy Letts and Lynn Nottage. If you haven’t renewed your subscription, now is the time to do it. I also want to take this time to welcome our new subscribers and donors to the Geffen Playhouse family. In our 2009/2010 season we had a chance to partner with many wonderful organizations to bring hundreds of disadvantaged youth and senior citizens to see Thurgood starring Laurence Fishburne. Seeing the look on their faces as they witnessed live theater, often for the first time, was extraordinary. We’d like to thank the individuals, foundations and organizations whose generosity made this possible. As we grow as a theater, it is our responsibility to continue expanding our education and outreach programs to reach an even larger group in our community. I am incredibly proud of our ability to collaborate with other important non-profit organizations. For Ruined, we are partnering with The Edgerton Foundation, International Medical Corps and Jewish World Watch. Tonight I welcome you to Ruined, the Pulitzer Prize winning play, which is a coproduction with the Intiman Theatre. It is an incredibly powerful show and I am delighted that you have the opportunity to see this great piece. I look forward to seeing you in the 2010/2011 season. Thank you for your continued support. Sit back, relax and enjoy the show. Respectfully yours,

THE ROAD TO RUINED

PLAYS ARE CREATED UNDER THE most unlikely circumstances. More often than not, a writer begins with an idea and, as a plot and characters develop, the play evolves in unanticipated directions. So is the case with Ruined, Lynn Nottage’s Pulitzer prize winning drama about women who find a refuge of sorts in a brothel in the Congo. What began as an idea to adapt Bertolt Brecht’s Mother Courage transformed into a play about what cruelty begets and how endurance and hope survive even the most violent of offenses. This is where the story of Ruined begins. Lynn Nottage, Playwright and Kate Whoriskey, Director discussed the beginnings of Ruined while working on Nottage’s play Fabulation,

a companion piece to her widely produced and lauded play Intimate Apparel. During rehearsal, Nottage suggested to Whoriskey a collaboration on a Brecht play. Whoriskey had recently directed Caucasian Chalk Circle and Nottage was attracted to the idea of adapting Mother Courage and setting it in the Congo. Whoriskey, intrigued by Nottage’s plans to visit Uganda to interview Congolese refugees, happily accepted an invitation to accompany the writer on the journey. Nottage set up interviews with 15 women through connections she had developed while working for Amnesty International. The writer and director team spent ten days in Uganda listening to the stories of Congolese women and the horrors

they had witnessed and endured. At the culmination of each interview the women were photographed and these images would become central to the play that Nottage set out to write. When asked when she knew that Mother Courage would no longer provide a framework for their project, Whoriskey noted, “it was never articulated while we were in Uganda but I think we knew on that first day of interviews that there was an entirely original story needing to be told about women in the Congo. We were grateful that Mother Courage had brought us to these women but that was the most we were going to pull from the play.” When they returned home, PERFORMANCES  MAGAZINE P3

THE ROAD TO RUINED BY AMY LEVINSON

Nottage officially abandoned the idea of Mother Courage when she called Whoriskey and suggested that the structure of Brecht’s original was hindering the authenticity of the story they wanted to tell. The director was glad to defer to Nottage’s impeccable instincts. The first production of Ruined took place at The Goodman Theatre in Chicago and then moved to The Manhattan Theatre Club in New York where the writer and director team honed the production which would later open to extraordinary acclaim and extend numerous times. Neither artist could have anticipated the national and international attention that would arise from Ruined. Whoriskey notes, “for us it was simply a labor of love based on a subject that Lynn and I were passionate about pursuing. We had no idea that audiences would embrace the work in the way that they have.” In the midst of this successful endeavor, the Intiman Theatre in Seattle hired Whoriskey as the new Artistic Director and she knew

this production would have a home there this season. The Geffen Playhouse soon partnered with the Intiman for a co-production of unprecedented scale. It includes a cast of 12, musicians on stage and a tremendous physical set. Los Angeles is the fourth step in the journey of this extraordinary play but the most profound stop will take place after the show closes at the Geffen and moves on to South Africa. Both the writer and director were keenly aware of the responsibility laid at their feet once they held these women’s stories in their hands and hearts. What the victims of war and rape in the Congo wanted more than anything was to be heard. Whoriskey describes her experience when listening to Congolese women tell their stories. “In America people tell you intimate details of their life because they want to have a catharsis, they want to open up emotionally to someone they are close to and share. The women we spoke with in Uganda were not interested in this — their one goal was to get this information out into the

world — to make sure their stories were being heard.” She adds, “They wanted Peter Jennings and instead they had Lynn and Kate. We know that theater has such a small voice in comparison but we have done what we can to make these stories heard.” Now, with Ruined earning the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for drama and being produced more than any other play in regional theaters this year, these stories are receiving a national spotlight that is long overdue. It is with this responsibility in mind that the production makes its final stop in South Africa, which has the world’s largest population of Congolese refugees. Whoriskey says of this choice, “In an effort to give these women a voice, to have their stories heard, we wanted international organizations to take notice and we are incredibly gratified that they have. Human Rights Watch, among others, have taken notice of the work and Lynn was invited to speak at Parliament. Even if, as theater artists, we are not the most influential group, we have made an impact on behalf of these women in the Congo. It seems

only right that they hear this story first hand- in some ways the journey of the play would be incomplete without the international cycle included.” After a recent performance at the Intiman Theatre in Seattle, the actors spoke about what it would mean to do this play for Congolese women. They are honored to have the opportunity to perform for the audiences in South Africa but as one of the cast members so wisely put it, “We stand to learn far more from them than they do from us; we are telling a story they know all too well.” The deep connection that these artists have with this play is undeniable. Many of them have been with the production since it began in Chicago. For those who joined the cast in Seattle and will continue on to Los

Angeles and South Africa they have committed themselves not only to performing this physically and emotionally challenging play with vim and vigor but they have taken up the cause of aiding the victims of the Congo. Participating in this play incites action – a desire to do something to help the women who are portrayed in Ruined. The world that Nottage creates in Ruined is a fictitious one — that should be made clear. But what is undeniable is that the 15 women who the writer and director interviewed are embodied in the women who inhabit this play. And, like the characters themselves, their triumphant wills to survive cannot help but move us all. Is it difficult for Whoriskey to imagine another director taking on

this play after working on productions of it for more than a year? She notes, “I look forward to seeing what other directors do with Lynn’s play. As far as Ruined goes, I’d love nothing more than to see it produced in every state and every city.” Just as the idea for this play took on a life of its own, it also seems Whoriskey is prepared for this lauded play to take off in new directions. As for Los Angeles audiences, it is a privilege to have both Lynn Nottage and Kate Whoriskey working on this production before the Ruined company departs for South Africa. While an adaptation of Mother Courage set in the Congo would have been wondrous in their hands, it is hard to imagine anything more profound than Ruined. PERFORMANCES  MAGAZINE P5

PARTNERSHIP SPOTLIGHTS Edgerton Foundation

The Edgerton Foundation has supported International Medical Corps projects in the Democratic Republic of Congo for several years. The conflict there has been the deadliest since World War II. The Foundation also supports New American Plays around the country. When we had the opportunity to see Ruined in New York in the winter of 2009 we witnessed a compelling story set in the midst of the violence in the Eastern Congo. It was a natural step to offer to underwrite a benefit at the Geffen (one of our favorite theatres and a leader in new play development) to help International Medical Corps in its heroic and unheralded mission to help the damaged women and children in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

For more than 25 years, International Medical Corps has been delivering lifesaving medical care and training in some of the world’s toughest humanitarian environments, including Pakistan, Afghanistan, Darfur, and Haiti. Since the 1990’s International Medical Corps has provided health care and training to more than 1 million Congolese devastated by two decades of bloody civil war, including treatment and livelihoods support for survivors of sexual violence. We are honored to collaborate with the Geffen Playhouse in raising awareness about the tragic conditions faced by so many people in the Congo, and helping bring about change that lasts.

Jewish World Watch (JWW) is a hands-on leader in the fight against genocide and mass atrocities, engaging individuals and communities to take local actions that produce powerful global results. Our current work focuses on protecting and empowering the women and families who are survivors of the ongoing crises in Darfur, in Sudan and in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where the flow of conflict minerals fueling the violence must be stopped. Partnering with Geffen Playhouse on this production of Ruined offers an unprecedented opportunity to bring to life the stories of real people, particularly women, in the Congo. Having met these women ourselves, we commend the Geffen for playing an important role by entertaining audiences while inspiring efforts to end the crisis. P18  PERFORMANCES  MAGAZINE
