ruth draper’s monologues
From the artistic Director Ruth Draper was revered by her contemporaries for being one of the most brilliant monologists ever to grace the stage. Born in New York City in the 1880s, she carved out a life not often afforded to women at that time in the performing arts. Her ability to immerse herself completely into a persona and then another and another became a blueprint for such actors as Lily Tomlin, Whoopi Goldberg and John Leguizamo. We embraced it when another revered actress came to us with the idea of a revival of Draper’s monologues. Annette Bening is an extraordinarily exciting and versatile performer. Having played some of the most renowned characters in dramatic literature — Hedda Gabler, Medea, Madame Ranevskaya — she has also created memorable contemporary characters in plays by Tina Howe and Joanna Murray-Smith. But Ruth Draper has long been a passion of Annette’s. For years she has been honing in on and making these monologues her own. At once a tour-de-force and an homage to a great writer and actress, Annette has infused this evening with her fiery interpretation of four of Draper’s best pieces. Over the last 15 years, Annette has not only graced our stage, but she has also been an incredible friend and supporter of the Geffen and of arts education. To facilitate and, thus, share in her dream project is our pleasure. These monologues are gems, never meant to be contained within the pages of a book. To see Annette breathe life into them has been nothing short of joyous. Enjoy the show.

We are delighted to welcome you to Ruth Draper’s Monologues starring the incomparable Annette Bening. Annette is a dear friend of the Geffen. She has appeared here in Hedda Gabler, The Female of the Species and most recently a special holiday performance of It’s A Wonderful Life!. We are forever grateful for her dedication to the playhouse. Annette is an avid supporter of arts education and supports the Geffen Playhouse Literacy Project, now in its second year. This program is in collaboration with UCLA Center X and the Partnership for Los Angeles Schools, at Mendez High School in Boyle Heights. It is helping 10th grade students improve their writing, reading and speaking skills through year-round arts and literacy programming. “Before this program, if my teachers told me I had to write something, I wouldn’t know how to start. But because we went through this program — going to the Geffen to see plays and everything we did with them in class — I have an idea of how to start an essay and how to use examples. I now know how to express myself in a writing assignment.” —10th grade student, Mendez High School We are proud that the Geffen Playhouse Literacy Project is having significant impact on students in Boyle Heights — a neighborhood where over 60% of adults have not graduated high school and less than 5% have obtained a college degree. We invite you to learn more about the critical arts and literacy work that we are taking part in by visiting geffenplayhouse.com/education.

discovering draper by amy levinson
In both her life and her work Ruth Draper wrote her own rules. Monologist, recitalist and diseuse. There are many titles given to what Ruth Draper did as a performer. From 1920 to 1956, Draper took the world by storm by bringing forth an entirely new theatrical form and in doing so, paved the way for some of the most talented, non-traditional performers of our time. Born in Manhattan in 1884 to William H. Draper and Ruth Dana Draper, she hailed from a family of great prominence, some of whom were newspaper editors, doctors and literary liaisons to presidents. One of eight children, Draper began creating characters based on people she knew at a very early age. She was able to hone in on idiosyncrasies of speech and language and from there, transform into someone entirely new. In a 1955 interview with Studs Terkel, Draper credited her gift to having been an imaginative child. “I think that what I do is something that, as a child, I never lost, which is the child’s capacity to throw themselves completely into what they pretend to be [and] if you’re completely given over to what you’re trying to portray, you will convince the other people too.” While children in well-to-do families were encouraged to learn music and even perform for visiting family and friends, acting on the stage professionally continued to represent a seediness that was beneath a family such as the Drapers. But Ruth Draper’s talent could not be contained in drawing rooms and parlors. It was clear from a young age that her gifts for mimicry and character needed a larger audience. Beginning as early at 1910, Draper began to perform in the homes of prominent people in New York and London. Luminary figures such as Mrs. Franklin Roosevelt, Mrs. Felix Warburg, Mrs. Waldorf Astor, Mrs. Jon Astor and Mrs. H.H. Asquith, the wife of the prime minister, encouraged her continued study. The Draper family moved from the United States to Germany and then to England. By 1913 the invitations from royalty began and she became the toast of London. As Draper continued to hone her performance skills, she began to question in what medium her talents were best suited. While she loved theater and plays, she wasn’t entirely sure a life of playing traditional roles suited her specific talent. She sought advice from her friend, writer Henry James. She often credited him for helping her choose her professional path. He referred to her work as “strange, brilliant impersonations” and when asked by her if she should pursue acting for the stage in plays written by others he stated, “My dear young friend you have woven yourself a magic carpet—stand on it!” Ruth Draper’s life was not short on inspiration. In addition to her ongoing friendship with Henry James, she spent many afternoons in the studio of John Singer Sargent, even sitting for sketches. Sargent drew her while in character and these drawings would be used on theater posters and programs throughout her career. A confluence of events happened in Draper’s 29th year. In 1914, while still unmarried herself, her three sisters wed and moved away from home. Soon after her mother passed away. Without the mooring of a spouse or a mother, Draper was free to pursue a professional career in the theater. But a Broadway debut would have to wait. World War I had begun and Draper would begin touring Europe to entertain troops. After briefly working in a munitions factory, Draper joined up with the Red Cross to do benefit concerts raising tens of thousands of dollars for their cause. She travelled to Europe with the intention of performing for American soldiers in France but the war ended soon after her arrival. She opted to stay in France and tour and there met Harriet Marple, a singer, and a woman who would be a close friend to Draper all her life. The war impacted Draper’s career in many ways. She wrote numerous monologues about what she had witnessed and these would become part of her permanent repertoire. She returned to a post-war London and New York that no longer frowned upon an upperclass woman pursuing a career in the theater. Draper’s 1920s were more roaring than most. In this period she wrote what would become her most well-known and oft performed pieces including The Italian Lesson, Three Women and Mrs. Clifford and A Church in Italy. She gradually dropped many of her earlier monologues with the exception of a collection of early pieces including A Class in Greek Poise and A German Governess with a Class of Children. Draper’s fan base grew exponentially and continued to include the greatest artists, writers and politicians of the time. Included among her fans were James Barrie, Noel Coward, A.A. Milne and Helen Keller who attended with her companion Anne Sullivan who would tap out the monologues on Helen’s wrist. It is said that Mrs. Patrick Campbell—the original Eliza Doolittle in Pygmalion—asked George Bernard Shaw, “Have you ever seen such acting?” to which Shaw responded, “That’s not acting. That’s life.”
The design and production demands of Draper’s shows were minimal, making her takeaway quite large. She became a very wealthy woman. Generous throughout her life, she gave money to numerous charities as well as giving her time and talent, and she supported friends and family as needed. In 1928 Draper met Lauro de Bosis, an Italian writer and translator. The two fell madly in love and went on to have a three year affair. But she was the first to say that her work was her greatest love — an affair that indeed lasted until the early 1950s.
In 1925 Draper, who was disinclined from speaking about her own work, opened up about her process and point of view. Here are some excerpts taken from that piece: Not all of them are real people. They are mainly pieces of people put together. Some of them are actual enough. I used to know a City Magistrate who presided in the Domestic Relations Court, and he told me I could come and sit with him when I wanted to and see what was going on. That’s where I saw the old Jewish woman [from “Three Generations in a Court of Domestic Relations”]. In real life, though, the situation was not the same as it is in the stage sketch. I never try to point morals in my monologues; yet I believe the material has got to be something more than a mere characterization; it has got to go deeper into human life and human feeling. People send me hundreds of interesting and amusing suggestions, anecdotes showing a funny situation, but I never try to make the things funny. It is invariably incidental, a byproduct of the character shown on the stage. As often as not the humor of the situation is something the audience finds for itself. I do nothing more than suggest it. There, I believe, is where the whole thing has its greatest appeal. The people who come have to use their own imaginations to get the effect, and they appreciate that. There is no person except myself on the stage. The others are the joint product of my own and the audience’s imagination. You see, it appeals to the highest thing in the people who come. They help do the thing and assist in creating an effect which I could never create alone. PErFORMANCEs MAGAZINE P5

Meet Chef Taylor Boudreaux Executive Chef of Napa Valley Grille The Geffen Playhouse has partnered with Napa Valley Grille on our Opening Nights for over 5 years. Outside of Opening Nights, Napa Valley Grille is a favorite meeting place for donors, subscribers and artists. Jamie Mikelich in our development department sat down with Chef Taylor to get to know one of our favorite Geffen partners. Jamie Mikelich: Let’s start by chatting a little bit about your life and background with Napa Valley Grille. Chef Taylor Boudreax: I’m married to my wife Sunita and we have two children — Liam, 5 and Sila, 1 as well as our dog, Roxy. I’ve been at Napa Valley Grille (NVG) for 2 years. Before NVG, I worked in Northern California, but when this opportunity arose, I jumped at the chance to come back to Los Angeles. JM: What is your background? TB: Believe it or not, I was actually a Theater major at NYU. Theater was always a huge passion. I love the stage and the energy it creates with an audience. When I was a kid, I went to the Folger Shakespeare Theater, which was incredible. However cooking was also always a draw and eventually that became my life’s interest. JM: A theatre background; that explains your love for the Geffen. TB: I love the people at the Geffen. Your subscribers and donors come in all the time and I have a chance to see the same people every few weeks, which is wonderful! We’ve been able to build some amazing relationships with your subscribers. Every time there is a new show-it’s a new opportunity to expand our community. P12 PERFORMANCES MAGAZINe
JM: For those who don’t know about NVG, what do you want to share with them? TB: It’s easily accessible with great food and service. I love my job; I basically get paid to play with food and talk to some amazing people all day long. We believe in creating emotional connections with our guests which allows us the opportunity to really interact with the Geffen folks well beyond the usual “How’s everything tonight?” JM: Last questions: Favorite dish at NVG and something that may surprise people about you? TB: My favorite dish at NVG is our lamb ragu. And something that would surprise people, hmm … okay, I was an Eagle Scout and I also love to garden.

outreach
Before the Geffen came, I hated writing. Thanks to this program, I now write a lot more, and I read a lot more, too. It has helped me improve my writing and reading a lot, and it has inspired me to be open to new experiences, to the new worlds that the plays can take you to. — 10th grade student, Mendez High School (Boyle Heights)
