ADI GREENBERG

Welcome to Geffen Playhouse and the launch of our 2023/2024 Season in the Gil Cates Theater. On behalf of the Board of Directors, we are thrilled to share with you a full lineup of inspired storytelling in our Gil Cates and Audrey Skirball Kenis Theaters, beginning with the West Coast premiere The Engagement Party. This season marks an exciting next chapter as we welcome Tarell Alvin McCraney as our new Artistic Director. As an award-winning writer, producer and educator, Tarell is a force of creativity and uniquely suited to lead our theater’s artistic vision. Together with Gil Cates, Jr., they are a powerhouse team who will embrace the evolution taking place in the industry, make bold, innovative choices and ensure Geffen Playhouse is well-positioned for the future. Please join us in welcoming Tarell to the Geffen. 2 P L AY B I L L

In a time where nonprofit arts organizations and regional theaters across the country are facing extreme challenges and making difficult decisions, your presence today is the very foundation for Geffen Playhouse. Without the support of our patrons, donors and subscribers, we could not realize our commitment to produce compelling theater, as well as continue our robust education and community engagement programs. Thank you for being here. We can’t wait for you to experience all that 2023/2024 has in store at the Geffen. With gratitude, Adi Greenberg Board Chair

It was 2019 when we began the conversation with Darko Tresnjak and Samuel Baum about their production of The Engagement Party. The play’s world premiere was a hit at Hartford Stage, and we were excited to reunite the director, writer, and design team for its West Coast premiere. Little did we know we’d have to wait four years for the Geffen production to finally come to fruition. Thankfully, good things come to those who wait. We are delighted to welcome Darko and Samuel to the Geffen for the first time and to finally share this tightly-crafted play with our audience. Together, Darko and Samuel have reassembled a tremendous design team to execute a breathtaking display of wealth writ large. The sheer scope of the scenic design is as bold as we have ever undertaken, and the process has been thrilling for us all. In addition, this talented ensemble cast makes a play requiring absolute precision look as natural and effortless as can be. As we launch the Gil Cates Theater 2023/2024 Season, I want to take a moment to welcome our new Artistic Director, Tarell Alvin McCraney. He is an artist we have long admired and love collaborating with, and I cannot imagine a better artistic leader to move the Geffen into its next phase. As we launch this season, we also begin our plans for the future. We look forward to sharing our exciting vision to build upon the Geffen’s legacy and expand it beyond what we have yet to dream. ART LIVES HERE

Geffen Playhouse celebrates the diversity in our audiences and our productions, and it is our mission to create, foster, and nourish an environment that is open and welcoming for all. We are a home for the arts, and we believe our physical space should also reflect and be representative of our ongoing commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion in everything we do and the communities we support. Four Los Angeles artists have been invited to create original art works to be displayed in our lobby welcoming audiences. Our 2023/2024 Season is curated by Terrell Tilford (Band of Vices), the Creative Director of Art Lives Here and Geffen Playhouse alumnus.

It is a testament to the Geffen Playhouse’s commitment to inclusivity and the belief that the arts have the power to bring people together, transcending barriers and fostering understanding.
