MATT SHAKMAN
Welcome back to the Playhouse! It is with great joy and no small amount of relief that we re-open our doors and bring audiences back into this beautiful building to enjoy live and in-person theater. David Kwong and his incredibly talented and patient team have been on hold for sixteen months to do the Los Angeles premiere of this wildly smart and entertaining show, The Enigmatist. Of course, no one was resting on their laurels in the interim—David, along with director Jennifer Chambers and the rest of his extraordinary team of designers, embraced the virtual theater space and created Inside the Box as part of the Geffen Stayhouse series. That interactive evening of puzzle solving was a small slice of what you will experience here in The Enigmatist. 2 P L AY B I L L
Part magic, part puzzle party, The Enigmatist is also a story of a wonderfully eccentric genius, the birth of modern code breaking, and love amidst discovery. All of these ingredients create a surprising, fun, and interactive show, and I can think of no better way to launch our 25th Anniversary Season than with this longawaited, one-of-a-kind event. Enjoy the show! Matt Shakman Artistic Director

On behalf of the entire Geffen Playhouse family, I’d like to welcome you back as we celebrate the start of our 25th Anniversary Season. After an unprecedented break from in-person performances, our theater is alive again with the energy of artists, actors, set builders, costume designers and now— audiences! We are so excited to have you here. I remember as if it were yesterday, seeing the West Coast premiere of Four Dogs and a Bone, the first show to open Geffen Playhouse in 1995. The anticipation and energy in the building was palpable. Fast forward to now, starting our next 25 years with the West Coast premiere of puzzle-master and Geffen Stayhouse alumni David Kwong’s The Enigmatist. The lockdowns and theater closures brought with them a unique set of challenges we had never before experienced. With a pivot to live, virtual and interactive Geffen Stayhouse productions, we were fortunate to be able to keep the majority of our staff working, and audiences engaged, during very uncertain times. We also created a Geffen Playhouse Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee made up of Geffen artists, staff, and Board members. I invite you to learn more about these ongoing efforts, and how to get involved, on our website. The success of these initiatives was not only a result of the innovation and dedication from our entire team, but also due to the support of our incredible and loyal donors, subscribers and patrons like you. So, welcome home! We’ve missed you.

25 YEARS AND COUNTING Founder Gilbert Cates with Trustee Kristen Combs at the soon-to-be Geffen Playhouse (formerly Westwood Playhouse)
“ONWARD AND UPWARD WITH THE ARTS.” That was the mantra of Geffen Playhouse Founder and Producing Director Gilbert (Gil) Cates, a visionary and a showman who brought this theater to life a quarter of a century ago. And it remains our mantra today. With the launch of our 2021/2022 season, we celebrate 25 years of storytelling, opening nights, world premieres, standing ovations, and all the artists and audiences who have passed through our doors since we first raised our curtain with Four Dogs and a Bone in 1995. We did not just begin life as Geffen Playhouse—there’s more to our story. It was the early 1990s and, as a lover of the arts, then-Dean of the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television Gil Cates had a dream and a vision. The goal was to create a new non-profit professional theater company that 1 4 P L AY B I L L

There is nothing more important to me than erasing the stigma around mental health. Being healthy mentally is equally as important as, if not more important than, being healthy physically. As a lifelong sufferer of anxiety, I have found my deepest healing through creativity.
We should never take for granted that the arts have the power to transform us, to expose our deepest vulnerabilities, to cultivate empathy and to bring about joy, healing, and relief from the daily stressors of the world.
