The Campaign for Scholarships and Innovation 2013-2018
A message from the
PRESIDENT AND DEAN When the Campaign for Scholarships and Innovation launched in 2015, I stated that the founding of our school “heralded a new era of excellence in medical education and patient care” in our region. I believe this to be true now more than ever. When we talk about enhancing patient care, however, I think it is critical to remember that great patient care begins with great medical students and to keep our focus on individual students and ways we can help them to grow in their profession. We’ve been fortunate to educate some remarkable students. Take, for example, members of the classes of 2013 and 2014. Tom Churilla, MD, a Scranton native who chose our medical school to be close to a parent coping with cancer, got more than just proximity to his beloved father. He got the friendship and mentoring of radiation oncologist, Chris Peters, MD. I am pleased to report that Dr. Peters is now Tom’s colleague. They work together at Northeast Radiation Oncology Centers (NROC) and both serve as clinical faculty here at the School of Medicine. Dan Benyo, MD, of the Class of 2014 is practicing internal medicine in Hazleton, while his friend and classmate, Patrick Connors, MD, does the same in Scranton. Jeremy Celestine, MD, of the Class of 2013 joined his mentor, GCSOM’s regional associate dean Michael Ferraro, MD, at his OB-GYN practice in Wilkes-Barre. There are also our current students, scholarship recipients like Jason Homza, a former Marine and high school science teacher, and Kathy Snyder, who worked three jobs in high school and in college to pursue her dreams. When we talk about the progress and accomplishments of the School of Medicine, we are really talking about the energy, determination and brilliance of these students and all of our students. 7fSbidWX^V gS R_ Xc T_b dWSXb PS^Sűd N^R Sc`SQXN[[i dWS PS^Sűd _T their future patients. Thanks to you, we’ve increased the likelihood these students will remain in the region they love by giving them the opportunity to train locally. Ultimately, it’s our communities dWNd PS^SűdͶ Although the Campaign for Scholarships and Innovation has closed, we are just beginning to realize the impact that our students — members of the healthcare teams of the future — will have on our neighborhoods, our region and even our nation. We will continue to admit bright and talented young people from our region and beyond. These students will need your friendship, too. On behalf of the students mentioned above — and every student, past, present and TedebS gW_ WNc _b gX[[ PS^Sűd Tb_] i_eb ZX^R^Scc Σ thank you. Together, we will continue to build a healthier and happier region! Sincerely,

IMPA The Campaign for Scholarships and Innovation was more than a

First and foremost, our school was a gift to the community that is meant to repay continually. The energy, excitement and enthusiasm necessary to launch a brand-new medical school came from you — our community. Our school is part of a system known for its innovation. Our students are learning personalized medicine from physicians and scientists who were using the tools — genetic information backed by decades of electronic health information — long before the phrase “precision medicine” was even coined. And we have been concerned about confronting the social determinants of health before “population health” became a national buzzword. All this innovation is being brought to bear on your health, your wellness and the wellbeing of our entire region. That’s what the Campaign for Scholarships and Innovation was all about. Curriculum Family Centered Experience (FCE) program <^ dWSXb űbcd N^R cSQ_^R iSNbc _eb students spend several one-week sessions living, working and interacting with the people of each regional campus. The week is spent getting to know the service rvice agencies that patients in the community access ccess for various needs. However, the most instructive ti partt is i the th time ti students spend with a family. The families are volunteers and are chosen because they are living with chronic illness or devastating injury. This is the time for students to experience themes embedded in the curriculum, to encounter in real life the challenges of navigating our healthcare system. It also provides the opportunity for the community to meet our students in the comfort of their own homes, heightening the community’s sense of connection to the school.

We count the Dr. Stanley J. Dudrick Legacy Society among the great accomplishments of the Campaign for Scholarships and Innovation. Planned giving is a beautiful way for generous people to create legacies that last. The Dudrick Legacy Society is the way we choose to honor them. Named for “living legend” Stanley J. Dudrick, MD, the society welcomes those who share his deep love for our region and its people.
LEGAC The Campaign for Scholarships and Innovation 2013 – 2018
About Stanley J. Dudrick, MD By the time someone is called a “living legend,” he’s usually not what you would call humble and kind. The former William T. Smith Manual Arts Building, where Scranton native Gerald T. Halpin went to school as a teen, will be renovated into a state-of-the-art space for student services, thanks to a planned gift bequeathed by Mr. Halpin.

About Gerald T. Halpin Gerry Halpin’s life story is inspirational and quintessentially “Scranton.” He grew up on Pine Street and attended Scranton Technical High School. According to The Washington Post, the future real estate mogul was the son of an elementary school custodian who, as a boy, sold cherries, apples and currants from the family’s backyard. His father allowed him to keep half the money. Mr. Halpin paid his way through night classes at what is now The University of Scranton by working as a plastics manufacturer and glass blower. He served in the Navy during World War II, where he learned building trades and carpentry as a member of a construction battalion that supported Marine Corps invasions X^ dWS CNQXűQͶ Mr. Halpin also was an accomplished poker player, a skill that led to his career in real estate. As the Post wrote, “One evening, while in law school at Georgetown, he emerged the big winner in a game that included Atlantic Research Corp’s (ARC) president. The man was impressed and asked Mr. Halpin to oversee ARC’s business operations.” Mr. Halpin never looked back. TOMORROW Community immersion It’s a fact that modern medicine doesn’t do enough to stop health problems “upstream.” American doctors spend incredible time and resources on “downstream” health issues like obesity, diabetes, smoking-related illnesses and those linked to sedentary lifestyles without addressing the root causes. There’s a growing consensus that population health — solutions driven by acknowledging and working to mitigate the social determinants of health — can play an important role in increasing well-being while decreasing healthcare costs. That’s why we immerse our students in community at the very beginning of their education. The Family Centered Experience program is supported by time spent in the community, when students leave the classroom and go to work alongside social service agencies that are important partners in sustaining health. Students also undertake community health impact projects designed to identify health needs of the community and propose solutions with measurable outcomes.

How can knowledge of genomics impact the e health of communities? How can data gleaned from a thousand d disparate electronic health records stop a heart attack in a single gle individual? How can science be applied to mitigate the social risk factors threatening our neighbors’ well-being? The ultimate aim m of science is to serve humanity. When we publicly launched our Campaign for Scholarships and Innovation at Gala 2015, our team knew our students and school had support from you — our community, employees, neighbors and friends. I will be forever humbled, however, by just how overwhelming your support has been and by how much good your generosity has done in just a few short years. Our Campaign asked our supporters to imagine the ways a fresh, young medical school could impact our communities by enhancing wellbeing and taking an innovative approach to everything from research to curriculum. The response we received was nothing short of breathtaking. We set a goal of $15 million and — thanks to your energy and magnanimity — we continually set new goals and topped them as well. I want to thank our many friends who volunteered tirelessly, whether it was introducing us to potential new donors, lending a hand in the tremendous task of preparing for each year’s Gala, pitching in at our golf tournaments or helping to plan our successful Preventive @SRXQX^S ?SQdebS FSbXSc Σ _b N^i _T N ^e]PSb _T _dWSb Sů_bdcͶ I’m grateful to my friends and co-workers who, as school employees, regularly outperformed other institutions of higher education in terms of generosity and commitment to students. The zany Taco Tuesdays and occasional ice cream treats were the least we could do to show our appreciation for the many ways you helped our Campaign and our students to succeed. To all of our donors — no matter the size of your gift — thank you. You built our school and it is meant to be a regional jewel, something that gives back everything it received and more. The good news is that, already, some of our alumni are practicing medicine in our neighborhoods and many more are planning their return. Their success is how our school will make good on its promise to impact our community’s health and wellbeing. The Campaign for Scholarships and Innovation was about community, y wellbeing and innovation. I believe that, as the Campaign Campaig comes to a close, we have demonstrated the many ways our school embodies all of these ideals. This is what you’ve been investing in. This is what you’ve been supporting. On behalf of Geisinger yo Commonwealth School of Medicine, thank you. C Gratefully, G
