This issue is packed full of Spring Fashion. We studied the trends coming down the runway during NY Fashion Week, checked out some of the festivities happening around NYC during Fashion’s Night Out and I’ve come to the conclusion that although designers articulate their vision with their collections, fashion is what you make it. Each of us should have our own individual style. Just because something is on the runway in New York or Paris or Milan, doesn’t mean that it will translate into something that should hang in your closet.

Christina Neault is this month’s cover story. Ms. Neault is the Senior Production Manager for Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week and Mercedes Benz Swim Miami. As a real woman of style, Christina’s job puts her in touch with the who’s who of the fashion world in addition to being surrounded by the world’s most “beautiful women”(beauty is subjective). I admire Christina Neault and Latima Johnson get aquainted before the shoot Christina so much because she doesn’t let what she does define who she is. She is one of the most accessible, warmest and down to earth women I’ve met in a long time. I also admire the fact that she believes in giving back and dedicates time out of her busy schedule to be a mentor to students interested in pursuing a career in fashion.

When we think of fall we also think back to school. For me, it is also my favorite time of the year. Not only do I get to celebrate my birthday, the leaves on the trees begin to change color, we swap sandals and shorts for thick sweaters and cozy blankets, salads and BBQ for soup and stews. For me nothing beats crawling up on the couch with a good book and a cable knit throw cover while the warmth and faux fire from my electric fireplace gives the room a relaxing feel.-Check out our fall reading list for some suggestions on what to read.

As I write this note to our readers, one of my favorite poems comes to mind. I thought about this poem while having a conversation via Blackberry Messenger with a woman who I haven’t known for very long but has made a tremendous impact on my life. Sometimes it takes someone on the outside looking in to remind us of our purpose in life. I truly believe for most of us “Life Has Been No Crystal Stair” but yet we steel ourselves and we press on because that’s what we do.

Chastity Garner: The Woman Behind the Style

hastity Garner was born in Brunswick, GA. She received a Masters of Public Administration Degree from Kennesaw State University. While in grad school she became a model for Jibri (plus size clothing designer).

During her modeling experience, she found a new love for clothing and accessories that she never knew existed.

During photo shoots she would often offer her styling advice.

Unfortunately, Chastity injured her knee when she jumped from a tree and tore her ACL. As a result, her runway diva days came to a sudden halt. But she didn't lose her passion.

She actually gained a desire to help other women by becoming a wardrobe stylist.

Chastity started Garner Style, which is a specialized boutique for plus size women. Not only did she offer her styling advice but she provided her customers with great clothes. While styling these women she received an abundant amount of questions from women about how to wear clothes that complimented their curves. Those questions were the catalyst for her blog "The Curvy Girls Guide to Style" which steers plus size women to retailers and designers that can assist them with their quest for stylish pieces. Her blog received rave reviews which gave her the motivation to write her book. You guessed it, The Curvy Girls Guide to Style" A Crash Course In Having Fabulous Style At Any Size.

Gemini: When did you decide to write, "The Curvy Girl's Guide To Style"?

Chastity: I decided to write “The Curvy Girl's Guide to Style� over a year ago, but with a full time job and part time wardrobe styling that left little time to actually sit down and write a book.

Soon after, I moved to Dallas in February minus one full time job I finally had the time to get everything down on paper.

Gemini: What was your motivation?

Chastity: My motivation was my readers. I get a lot of fashion questions from curvy women everywhere. I wanted to put answers to the questions in one place.

Gemini: What is your goal for this book?

Chastity: My goal for this book was to really gauge and see if there was an audience for this type of thing. I guess you can say this book was to test the waters. If the response to this book was substantial my plan would be to grow the series substantially.

Gemini: What drives you to succeed?

Chastity: I have never been handed anything nor do I sit around waiting for things to happen to me. I am driven by my own internal drive and the fact that I am never satisfied. Once I accomplish one thing it is on to something bigger and better.

Everything is a stepping stone.

Gemini: In chapter 3: Foundation, Girdles, and Brassieres, Oh My! You

discuss the importance of undergarments. Can you please talk about this further?

Chastity: I've constantly seen the conflict between those who do wear girdles and those who don't. Girdles are an important part of my wardrobe and I incorporate them in the clients that I style. I personally think they enhance and shape women's bodies for the better. What I have always and will continue to say is, "Wearing shapewear is a personal decision that everyone has to make." I try my best to stay out of the politics of such things, because I think to argue on whether or not to wear a girdle is silly.

It's like arguing whether or not to wear makeup. If you want to wear it, then wear it, if you don't then don't wear shapewear and move on.

Gemini: On pg. 73 you mentioned, "skinny girl shopping". What do you mean?

Chastity: Skinny girl shopping is simply shopping in stores that carry straight sizes. Generally from a size 0-14.

These sizes are generally not seen as working for a plus size woman, but I want to get plus size women to not limit their options and even if they can't wear anything in these stores, they are always great for inspiration.

Gemini: If you could choose anyone to style? Who would it be? Why? Chastity: Michelle Obama. Although she is super basic, she is also very chic.

Gemini: How do you feel about the buzz

floating around about the plus size community (in the mainstream media)?

Chastity: I am in line with any publicity is good publicity. A lot of people in the plus size industry, from bloggers to models to indie designers are getting recognized and getting opportunities because of it. Sometimes the publicity isn’t what we all wish it would be, but what publicity ever is. At this point they are throwing us a bone and it is up to us to take advantage and make something of it.

Gemini: What is in your pocketbook right now?

Chastity: Oh my goodness, the question is what isn't in my purse. I literally carry the largest bags possible, so I can pile all my junk into it. I have in it now: My pink path-folio, Ted Lapidus Vintage shades, pads, eyedrops, mini brush set, wallet, mounds of receipts, ipod, a copy of The Curvy Girl's Guide to Style, mascara, paparazzi pink lipstick, and creme lipgloss.

Gemini: What is a must have piece for fall?

Chastity: I’m loving the deep red color (called Ox Blood) for Fall. I am looking for a dress in this color.

Gemini: Which is your favorite season

for fashion?

Chastity: Im gonna say Spring. I love Fall too, but I almost feel like in the spring you emerge from your cocoon of winter and emerge in new bright colors, prints, and florals. Sometimes I am a little dramatic.

Gemini: What is your favorite T.V show?

Chastity: I am actually a huge Degrassi fan, and yes I loved the show long before Aubrey Graham was Drake. I have been watching it from 2002. It’s actually really good and filled with juicy drama.

Gemini: Taking a cue from the ultimate curvy business woman, Oprah, What is your mantra?

Chastity: Okay, I know this may sound a little crazy, but my mantra comes from T.I.'s song Motivation. This is paraphrased of course, but I am constantly repeating in my head - No one person stops your show, I don't stop I go. This means a few things to me: 1. Don't wait on someone to give you an opportunity, create your own.

2. Don't let obstacles or people determine the outcome of what you want to do.

3. I am the one and only piece of energy in this universe that I can

control.

Gemini: What trend do you wish would vanish?

Chastity: Although plaid is probably more of a staple, I’m just tired of seeing those plaid shirts everywhere --they have been done to death at this point.

Gemini: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Chastity: I hope to have a few more books under my belt. I am planning to open a boutique here in Dallas next year. I got a couple other things, but I will reveal them at a later date.

Gemini: How do you want to be remembered?

Chastity: My biggest fear is not being a good person. Sometimes it is so easy to get bogged down in everyday tasks of life and forget about just being decent to others from just friendly chat with the clerk at CVS or just saying hi to a stranger. Before I leave, I want people to say, "Chastity was a good person."

Something can be said about character these days. It is not often we find those rare glimpses of the generosity and humbleness of man—err—woman. We are so busy with our Blackberries, iPads, Google chats, Facebook accounts, and tweets (yes, we are guilty of it too) that we do not give ourselves a chance to live our best life and take in the special moments. We found such a lady.

Meet Cindy Clark Christopher: mother of three, grandmother of three, and a 26 year veteran on the battlefield of love (marriage is a battlefield people—don’t you ever listen to John Mayer?). On a blazing hot Saturday in July, armed with fabulous fashion from this season’s sponsor of Real Woman of Style, Sonsi Woman (the Internet’s newest hotspot for plus clothing and social networking), we met Cindy in College Park, Georgia for a little glam, and boy did we fall in love.

"I have been married to Jeff for over 26 years. We have 3 children together. I have 3 beautiful grandchildren from my daughter Amber and one on the way from my son Adam and daughter-in-law Leah. My grandchildren are AWESOME and I love spending time with them and talking to them because they are all so different. Jeff and I have pastored Faith Horizon Ministries in Thomasville, GA for going on 19 years. I think what makes me a strong sassy woman is being confident in who I am and knowing who I am based on the word of God. My faith drives me to hang on through the most difficult times and my faith gives me hope for the future."

Save On Fall Fashion

Simple Tips To Keep Money In The Bank & The Latest Trends In The Closet

The weather is changing and it’s

time for us to add a few more coldweather pieces to our Fall wardrobe. Rather than rushing out as soon as you feel a cool breeze, use these tips to make sure you maximize your savings.

Don’t purchase until after the season. According to Latoia Cunningham, a personal stylist based in New York City, the best time to shop for Fall items is in late-November, “After season is when the hot items and trends go on sale because retailers are making space for new [winter] inventory.” If your wardrobe can handle the wait, shopping after Fall will give you the best chance to pick up discounted pieces.

If you have to buy now, wait until school starts. Kids starting school and young adults heading to college mean that parents have a strong reason to shop in August, and stores know that. To get the best deals, wait until after classes are in session (post-Labor Day). Miriam Cato of South Florida advises buying Fall items well into the season, “I'll wait until September when they are ready for winter clothes.

The State of Relationships Part I: All The Single Ladies... and debunk these myths, I interviewed a single woman, a single man and an engaged couple to get an idea of what their views and ideas were when it comes to being in relationships and what the roles of each gender are.

Meet Stacey* (name has been changed to protect privacy), a 30-something single New Yorker who is not afraid to give her opinion on the state of relationships these days. She was very candid throughout our interview and answered some very tough questions about her past and thoughts for the future.

It is often said that when it comes to relationships, men and women are worlds apart in their definition of what makes a relationship successful. In general, men and women are said to have different ideas of what their roles are in relationships; when it comes to black men and women some experts argue that they aren't even at the same table when it comes to their opinions about relationships, both long term and short term.

Some women have a tendency to feel that men don't think long-term when it comes to relationships, there's a myth that men can only see what's in front of them while not planning for the future.

Many men believe that upon meeting them, women already have their futures planned out. Some people avoid relationships altogether, because of the myth that it's all downhill once you say "I do". To put a stop to this thinking

Gemini: As a single black woman, do you feel like there is pressure on you to settle down and find a mate?

Stacey: I don't feel there is any pressure because I'm a single black woman. I feel the pressure more because of my age.

G: And how old are you if you don't mind my asking?

S: 32 (while laughing). We're doing an interview right? You're supposed to ask me questions.

S: I got married for the wrong reasons.

I was pregnant and thought it was the right thing to do for my child but I ended up having a miscarriage at 4 months.

G: Wow, I'm sorry to hear about that. I wouldn't say that's the wrong reason.

That was admirable and very unselfish.

I would say that your head was in the right place to want to become a family.

S:Yes, but in the end my plan backfired and I ended up losing twice.

G: Would you say that you regret the try? Or do you appreciate the learning experience?

S: I appreciate the learning experience.

It showed me that there's a lot more to marrying someone than just loving them. I think sometimes we get caught up in the aspect of love (when we are younger) but don't look at the big picture. A marriage takes work. If you're not in it for all the right reasons; without common goals, it won't work.

G: How long ago was the marriage?

S: I was married in 2000.

G: I love that answer. I tend to believe that many people get married and go into the marriage with the expectation that it's going to be smooth sailing from here on out. Do you think that's what contributes to the divorce rate being so high?

S: I think that's one of the reasons; unrealistic expectations.

G: So that means you were pretty young going into it. Do you think that factored into why it didn't work out?

G: Ok, so let's come back to the present day. What are your current expectations if any when it comes to love?

G: So at 32, have you ever been married?

S: Yes I have previously been married.

S: I never ask for anything that I wouldn't give someone in return. Just be open and honest with me about what you want; communicate with me, respect me and respect US. That in my opinion is a good foundation for love.

Everything else will fall into place.

G: If only so many people felt the same way. I think the most important thing in that statement you made was, "I never ask for anything that I wouldn't give someone in return." Reciprocity seems to be almost as dead as chivalry, huh?

S: Chivalry is not dead. It's not appreciated or just not recognized by some women. I think that some women are so used to being treated any old way that when a good guy comes along they don't know how to receive it.

G: Be still my beating heart. I'm going to make sure my editor puts that in bold print at the top of the page.

S: All men aren't dogs and all women aren't worthy.

G:I’m going to put that in bold on the next page. (laughs) So, do you think that the "good man shortage" is real, or have many women closed themselves off to most men thus closing themselves off to more chances of love?

S: I don't think there's a "good man shortage". I think we pass up a lot of good men because he may not be a certain height or make a certain amount of money. So yes, in the end those are lost chances for love.

G: Wow, you're saying a lot of things that I haven't heard too many women say before. Do you think your experiences at 22 have allowed you to see things differently now that you're 32?

S:(laughs)Everything in life is a learning experience. If I didn't go through all the things that I did, I wouldn't be the person I am today.

What a difference 10 years makes!

G: I can definitely relate to that. Ok, one final question as I know I've already taken up enough of your time. Well, two questions really. Would you ask a man to marry you?

S: No! G: Never in life?

S: That not something I would feel comfortable doing.

G: That's nothing but the truth. I want to thank you for allowing me the chance to ask you these questions and get into your world a little bit. I appreciate it and I'm sure the men do too; it's always good to see what a woman really thinks about things S: The pleasure was mine!

G: Is it because of the possibility of rejection?

S: I'm old fashioned that way. Add the rejection factor too. (laughs) G: And now you know how a lot of men feel. (laughs) But that is one thing I hear often from a lot of women. They don't approach men because they are afraid of the rejection; yet they think that a man that has that same fear is some kind of punk. Let the record show that ya'll are some punks too.

S: (laughs) I admit I am a punk. I never approach men. I don't think less of a man who won't approach me because of fear. I guess we will just never meet! (giggles) G: OK, enough of the jokes, my final question. What do you think your role as a wife would be?

S: Friend, Lover, Partner, Provider (I can bring home some bacon too), Homemaker.

G: You make it all sound so simple.

S: Well you know it isn’t simple at all.

G: But we all wish it was. But then again, if it was, it wouldn't as special once you got it right.

S: Exactly. Sadly, you have to go through some bad to appreciate the good once you do get it.

Road To Peachtree Chasing A Dream One Step At A Time Metal chairs make that metally creaky sound as people shift in their seats to turn and stare at me standing with my hands folded in front of my 10 year old c-section hang over carefully tucked inside my two layers of Spanx.

“Hi,” I say shifting my weight from one side to the other wondering if I’m having an actual hot flash at the age of 31 or am I just imagining it. “My name is Sommer.”

“Hi Sommer,” they all say—some smiling at me a silent push to continue.

“And…I’m going to run.” There…I said it.

The small group holds their breath for a moment and after what seems like an hour, some chunky guy in a gray sweat suit starts the Rudy clap. Clap…pause…clap…pause.

Soon, the small group stands and claps in unison as I take my seat—smiling—in the ugly doo-doo brown metal chair. Maybe I can do this, I think nodding my head in that ‘Oh thank you. You shouldn’t have. Oh please, stop’ way. Aaaaaand scene!

Ok, so maybe that was all just in my head, and maybe there is no Beginner Runner’s Anonymous group where all of us untrained wanna-be’s go to

gain the acceptance of others just like us, but there are people out there just as nutty as me who are actually taking the steps to run with the best of them. Well, maybe not the best because seriously those Kenyans have everyone beat, but the semi-good ones. You know those semi-good runners who have their ponytails perfectly placed atop their heads, their super special running shoes that cost more than my mini-van tied ever so right, and their fancy iPod’s chocked full of crazy runner tunes strapped to their bicep. They come into Starbucks after their run still jogging in place to swipe a bottle of water or some super smoothie only semi-good runners know about.

Yea…them. I plan on being in the semi-good, perfect ponytail, special expensive shoe, super smoothie group.

This feat will be one for the record books—in my life anyway. Over the next few months (38 weeks to be exact), I will be chronicling my road to the Peachtree Road Race. It’s hard to say that I’ll make it—you (my small group sitting in the doodoo brown metal chairs) may have to egg me on when I’m not feeling too Forrest Gumpish—but I plan on giving it all I’ve got. Besides the fact that my weight hangs around 270 something, my boobs are like squishy 5lb bags of Dixie Crystal, and I’ll be one of thousands angling for a spot to even run in the race, I am pretty optimistic. After my husband laughed so hard he snorted (to this day he claims he wasn’t laughing at me but with me—but I don’t recall laughing), he petted my arm, gave me a kiss and told me I could do anything I set my mind to and he’s right. I can do this...right after I get my ass off this couch. Wish me luck!

Fashion Week Frenzy The Power Behind The Fashion When first meeting Christina Neault you get the impression of someone who’s self assured and used to calling the shots. Someone who is cool, calm and collected and will never let you see her sweat. These are the exact personality traits she needs to perform her job successfully. Christina is Production Manager for Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week as well as Mercedes Benz Miami Swim Week.

If you have ever had the pleasure of attending one of the fashion shows at the tents at Bryant Park you know how hectic it can get. Imagine having to coordinate the runway shows of some of the world’s most celebrated designers, oversee logistics, supervise staff, deal with press, all the while maintaining at least a shred of sanity.

On top of all of that, for the spring 2011 shows Christina has the extra responsibility of supervising the event’s mega move from Bryant Park to its new home in Lincoln Center’s Damrosch Park. During the photo shoot we took a walk over to the space which would become the new home of the most famous fashion extravaganza in the country. Christina meticulously outlined the floor plan for the new space from memory and even gave a short history lesson about the architecture of Lincoln Center.

Make no mistake Christina knows her stuff. She’s been in the business for a long time. A graduate of Parson’s School of Design, she has a love of fashion that extends further than the tents. Although she routinely works

with some of the world’s most prestigious designers, giving her unlimited access to the elite fashion community, there is no air of superiority about her.

Some say that access leads to power and although she has access to the movers and shakers of the industry, she does not insulate herself from the public. In fact she believes that with access comes responsibility, and has made giving back to the community a priority of hers and IMG’s the company responsible for producing the fashion events here and abroad.

Christina is the chair of The High School of Fashion Industries Executive Board and the move to Lincoln Center has fostered a partnership with the surrounding community and the New York Housing Authority.

Approximately 120 adolescents that live in NYCHA housing have the awesome opportunity to participate in Fashion Week because of the tireless efforts of Christina and her staff at IMG, NYCHA, The Council for Fashion Designers of America and the Lincoln Center Collaborative. The goal of the partnership is to expose the youth to the possible employment opportunities within the world of fashion.

“IMG is very excited about this unique program for young people in the neighborhood,” Christina says, “As Mercedes Benz Fashion Week moves to its new home at Lincoln Center, we look forward to many similar programs with the community.” (Lincoln Center is bordered by the Amsterdam Houses on

west 61st Street.)

Immersed in an industry that until late has not been all that kind to real sized women does not faze Christina. “I can call up a designer and have anything I want made,” says the full figured powerhouse, “my size is not an issue for me as far as working in this industry.”

In fact, Christina breezed onto the site for the photo shoot looking fabulous in a Calvin Klein tie-dye dress, BCBG Bag and sunglasses and some killer pumps.

What concerns Christina more is overseeing the around the clock staff that works in 12 hour shifts, “ leading up to fashion week we have staff working 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

It’s not so glamorous when we’re out here in February freezing our behinds off,” Christina says.

Coordinating with vendors, security, designers, the press and VIP’s is no easy task. But thanks to the technological upgrades being implemented with the move to Lincoln Center, Christina and the staff at IMG hope that guest check in will be a much more seamless process than it has been in the past.

With a new home for Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, new responsibilitiesExecutive Vice President Fern Maller resigned to start a consulting businessand a hectic schedule Christina has a lot on her plate. She admits that she doesn’t have much of a personal life but she wouldn’t have it any other way.

True Thoughts Being Stressed Out

A lot of people are under the impression that all stress is bad; this is not entirely true. What turns it into something negative is actually how you choose to react to the stress inducer. In some instances, your reaction is so knee jerk that your response is expected. I am not talking about those. These thoughts are more about the reactions to stress you can actually control.

In life, it is normal to get overwhelmed. Even the most organized and prepared person can feel weighted down, but their negative stress might not seem apparent because of prioritizing. I have found this to be true in my life.

During the first 5 months of my pregnancy I was stressed beyond belief. It was a lot to process and at 29 years of age, it was more than I was mentally prepared to grasp.

So, I reacted negatively; the minute I lightened up and stopped worrying about things that were out of my control, the stress lifted.

I look at life pretty much the same now. There was a time when I felt I needed to be in control of everything that involved me. I never factored in the variables that were totally out of my hands. It is my life so why can’t I be in control of it, right? I learned my lesson before my daughter was born and I am definitely a better person for it. Now, I take on as much as I think I can handle and when I feel it wearing on me I re-prioritize. This is how stress should be viewed, in my opinion. If what you are doing in life is becoming a burden, it might be time to just let go.

Stress should be something that works positively for you.

It should be a tool used to keep you aware of what’s going on in your life and help you rise to any occasion. I don’t think it is anything to beat yourself up over though. Life is about maturing, evolving and growing; believe it or not, stress plays a part in that. My biggest issue with reprioritizing used to be that I wouldn’t make good on my word. However, I’ve learned that the quality of what I do is more important than trying to keep my promises.

Allowing negative stress to make me obsess over that was changing me into a person I didn’t care for that much.

What is working now is realizing when my stress levels are going into the negative zone and making adjustments. It might be a little difficult at first but your mental and physical health should come before anything or anyone else. Once you recognize that, it becomes easier to not even commit to something that you know could possibly be a problem later. I know it is easier said than done but with a little self-control and perseverance it is possible and your body will thank you for it later.

Everyone has room for improvement and sometimes things like stress get tucked away waiting on us to fix it. They aren’t going to jump out at us, begging to be fixed; it’s going to take initiative on our part. Keeping this in mind daily, consistently helps me remember to let go of the bad stress and focus on that which makes me a winner. I believe that a healthy level of stress is attainable for anyone, you just have to want better for yourself in the end.
