There are over 5,000 grape varieties, and approximately 150 of those are planted commercially. There are six grapes that provide the backbone for wine production throughout the world. These six, known as the noble grapes in the wine world are Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir. These grapes have been cultivated all over the world, and been made into distinguished, even legendary wines. Although we can’t taste them all, we can start here.

Chardonnay is the number one white wine grape sold in the world. Its flavor and aromas are easily influenced by where it’s grown and how it’s made. Fruit flavors range from apple and lime in cooler climates, to tropical fruits flavors in warmer places. When barreled in oak, it takes on a richness characterized by honey and butter flavors. When fermented in stainless steel, it often retains more mineral flavors and comes across as fresher on the palate. Chardonnay excels in Burgundy, France, and cool coastal areas of California produce excellent Chardonnay. Chardonnay is a favorite with seafood. Minerally versions, like those from Chablis, France, pair classically with oysters.

Riesling is often low in alcohol and light in body. Flavors of peaches, apricots and melon are predominant. If aged, the wine takes takes on honey flavors

At one time, Dr Maurer had found something that was suspicious, but additional tests proved it to be benign. Every year, Dr. Maurer and her friends go together for their mammograms. Bold, bright colors and smoky eyes are last winter.

Although we admire their taste in finely tailored suit ensembles, some just don’t have the knack to translate putting the right shirt and tie with a suit to what to wear when the heat cranks. The Hamptons and the country clubs are strewn with bankers wearing their summer uniform: pressed plaid shorts and the all-too-common green Polo shirt.

Yet, summer is the time of year where successful businessmen, in general, transition easier into sartorial bliss than their female counterparts.

For both sexes, warmer weather offers welcome relief to those who prefer dress-down days. As the occasions of graduation parties, long weekends, barbeques, Fourth of July celebrations, evening strolls, beachfests, outdoor weddings, casual christenings, and found-a-job soirees arise, it is more of a joy to find an easy, breezy outfit.

The male does better than the female in summer because he is not overly concerned with accessorizing. Once the heat hits, the jewelry, ties, socks, cuff links usually come off. Then, once the staples are on, he is DONE-

out the door. As in recent years, the “unmatched” trend continues to be an acceptable way to put oneself together. [Note: unmatched in fashion terms does NOT mean careless clashing.] A simple watch and cool shoes still remain key, meaning well-dressed AND comfort easily come together.

A female’s tendency remains steadfast throughout the year: She wants to make sure what leaves the house in a certain way stays that way throughout the day or night. While men are already at their meeting or in transit, I dare say we females are choosing the appropriate necklace or belt and switching bags so that all comes together just as beautifully as their cold-weather ensembles do.

The most vexing decision is what to wear on one’s feet. Neither too flat to be business-y nor too high to look overdone, the kitten heel is a staple. And with the barelegged look so prevalent, make sure if you’re not naturally medium to dark-skinned, that there’s a tan tone to your legs.

Is the plan not working, or is it you not doing the work? The truth is that if you are doing what you are supposed to be doing, the weight WILL come off.

Let me get this straight-the overeating that was the culprit, is now your pal and the exercise that made you feel great is being avoided? Does this make sense to you? It’s like friending your enemy and avoiding your friend. Let me help clarify a few points by showing you some numbers:

Glass of wine: 120 calories Medium chocolate chip cookie: 80 calories

Let’s re-evaluate your diet plan. Are you really sticking to it? What about that extra glass of wine or those cookies you grabbed on the way out the door? Oh, and dinner out at your favorite restaurant? I know, you worked hard all week dieting and wanted to treat yourself to a healthy choice menu item. Where in the world, other than the diet world, do people reward themselves for an unfinished job? Fact is, if you want to lose weight, you need to stick to your plan. If you feel that you have been diligent and want to reward yourself, don’t do it with food, find a different reward system.

Now let’s talk exercise. What happened? When you started, you were all gung ho, you told everyone how much you were exercising, and how great you felt.

Then you got bored and took the benefit of exercise for granted. Now the very thing that made you feel great is barely a glimmer in your life. How did you get to this point?

Healthy choice dinner example: One piece of bread dipped in olive oil: 170 calories Mixed green salad with oil and vinegar: 150 calories Grilled salmon (8oz) with veggies: 750 calories Yikes! This healthy choice dinner totaled 1070 calories. I hope you didn’t have it with a glass of wine.

The point here is that just one splurge can quickly tip the scale in the wrong direction. If you are serious about losing weight, you need to simply stick to your plan. Going off the plan, even briefly, can get in the way of your success. Also, exercise offsets your calorie intake. If you were burning an extra 500 calories 3 times a week by exercising, that’s 1500 calories in a week, 6,000 in a month. Skip a couple of workouts a month, add in a couple of dinners out, and what have you got? FAILURE. How to avoid taking the path of destruction? We can become masters at self-regulating our bodies, our thoughts, our responses and drop those heavy sacks that we have felt compelled to carry around in the past.

“ Try some coconut oil on

popcorn, on sweet potatoes, in oatmeal, or in these yummylicious recipes. The Key Lime Pie can be made as a pie, or just make the filling as a pudding, then top it with the Cashew Coconut Cream! ” Key Lime Pie (Makes one 9” pie, serving 8-10) Crust Ingredients: 3 C- fine almond flour 4-5- fresh medjool dates 2 T- coconut oil 1/2 tsp- sea salt Filling Ingredients: 2- small ripe avocados 1- banana 11/4 C- juice from key limes (regular limes will also work fine) 1/2 C- mango chunks 1/2 C- agave nectar 1/3 C- coconut oil 11/2 tsp- vanilla Preparation: To make crust, place almond flour, dates, coconut oil, and sea salt in a food processor and blend until it balls up.

Firmly press crust into pie pan and set aside.

To make the filling, process all filling ingredients in a high-powered blender until smooth and fluid. Pour into pie shell and freeze, about 4-6 hours or longer.

I like to serve this topped with a little shredded coconut and mango chunks or slices.

Cashew Coconut Cream 1/2 C- cashews soaked in water overnight (cover cashews well as they will absorb it) ¼ - ½ C- coconut oil 1/3 C- dates pitted 1 T- vanilla bean 1/2 tsp- Celtic Sea Salt Coconut milk (add in gradually to get cream to desired consistency) Directions: In a high-speed blender, blend ingredients until smooth, adding in water if needed. In a thinner consistency, this makes a great dip for fruit, or keep it thicker to use as a frosting.

It makes your skin smooth and soft when you put it on, cleans and moisturizes your face, makes a great preshower hair conditioner, helps tame frizzy hair, and also works on your skin from the inside out when eaten. Oh yes…it also boosts your immune system, helps burn fat, and is awesome to cook with. What is this AMAZING product, you ask? Coconut oil!

I first found out about coconut oil when I went to the Dominican Republic, a number of years ago. I bought it in a glass bottle, and used it on my hair and skin as instructed. Fabulous! It wasn’t edible though. When I found an edible version in the health food

store, I was quick to try it out, and wow was it yummylicious!

Coconut oil provides moisture to the skin, and helps remove dead skin cells that can make your skin rough and flaky. Whether you put it on your skin or hair, a little goes a long way, so a dab the size of a dime should be fine. It may seem greasy at first, but your skin and hair will drink it in.

When buying coconut oil, look for the terms “extra virgin”, “organic”, “expeller pressed” or “cold pressed”, “non-GMO”, “unrefined” or “non-hydrogenated”. A refined oil means it has been processed in a way that would not be healthy for our body, so we want to be sure to consume coconut oil that is not refined, bleached, or hydrogenated.

Keep the coconut oil in a relatively cool place, but not in the refrigerator, as it gets very solid. The oil is creamy at room temp, unless the room is over 76 degrees, then it becomes a liquid. As a saturated fat, coconut oil has a very high smoke point, and keeps its stability as it cooks, unlike other oils, including olive oil, which break down when heated at high temperatures.

That makes it a great choice for sautéing, frying, and baking.

Though coconut oil is a saturated fat, it is nonhydrogenated, has no trans-fats, and has medium chain triglycerides (MCT’s) which help burn fat. How often do you find yourself trying to read an article all the way through to completion, just because some expert in your field wrote it?

Recently I found myself reading a series of articles on wisdom. I love learning about new concepts and hearing experts write about how we feel, think and behave. Ok, I admit I’m a self-development junkie.

I’m up for reading things that challenge me to think in new ways. Yet as I found myself reading article after article, I became aware of my responses. When things resonated, reading flowed easily. When an idea or concept was foreign, or I couldn’t wrap my thoughts around the way it was written, I had to tediously re-read it numerous times to understand.

What made me think that I had to read and slog through each article, just because someone with a recognizable name wrote it?

Would I miss out on something important if I didn’t make sense of the author’s ideas? As I continued to struggle, was I even going to remember what I had read hours later that I could apply in my life?

Of course I wasn’t, because the concepts didn’t align with how I make sense of the world.

I realized that in trying to fully appreciate the expert’s viewpoint, I was forcing myself to continue instead of saying, “that’s interesting” and stop. After all, I’m not studying for an exam, where I have to recall everything for the exam day and then promptly forget it afterwards.

I think many of us women feel like we are not enough: if only we read more and learn more, then, we can finally claim the title as an “expert” in our respective fields. I say, claim your place as expert now-stand in your sovereign power. What are you waiting for?

Craft Your Future – Build A Strong Foundation Just yesterday, I was talking with a young man who shared his feelings about a recent breakup with someone he thought he was going to spend the rest of his life with. I pondered on this for some time and decided to write this article and share my thoughts, not only with this young man, but also with those of you who are just beginning your journey in this life, and anyone else who will hopefully find some value here.

Like any building, your life requires a foundation. Have you ever considered the foundation you are building? You began building it when you were very young.

Your beliefs, the ones you absorbed during childhood beginning with your parents and the environment in which you were raised, are now running your life, subliminally ingrained, on those beliefs. Ask yourself this: Which of those beliefs are serving you well and which are not?

Your beliefs can either pave your way to success or block you from it.

Have you considered what you’ve built up to this point?

Have you reviewed the beliefs and perceptions upon which you’re constructing your life? If you haven’t, now is the perfect time to begin thinking about the shifting needed to strengthen your foundation; which will change, either subtly or significantly, your daily life. Two major factors to consider are education and association.

If you’re interested in creating shifts in your life, begin with education. Ask yourself: Have you prepared yourself to be independent and self-supportive?

Have you gained the knowledge that will sustain you and allow you to grow in ways that are relevant and have meaning to you and in what you are seeking to accomplish? Knowledge is power. Knowledge is the most powerful tool to add value to any given situation.

Do you have the power needed to be successful? What are you going to do to sustain that power? A strong foundation will allow you to meet challenges head-on and pave the way for opportunities.

Association is about alignment. In this particular young man’s situation, the young woman he was seeing did not share his passion, his dreams, and his vision of the future. As I mentioned to him, the person you marry becomes your partner in all things; for life. At least that is how we would like to think of what a union between two people really means. Anytime you form a relationship with someone, ask yourself where this will lead. Can you be supportive? Do you share the same vision, desires, needs, wants? What about principles and values? There is an expression: Birds of a feather flock together. Who we associate with can bring a lose/lose, win/lose, or a win/win situation to our lives.

Who we associate with, and the knowledge that we foster opens the way to options that lead to shifting our perspectives and further our choices.

It is when you begin to consider options in your thinking that you are truly ready to shift your perspectives, your beliefs, and your life and craft the outcome you seek for your future. Today’s decisions are tomorrow’s realities. An Exclusive Interview with National Best Selling Author, CEO, and Founder of Savvyauntie.com

[ inspiring ] I had the pleasure of meeting Melanie Notkin last summer at the home of Jill Zarin in the Hamptons.

Melanie told me all about her career as the Savvy Auntie. When I found out I was going to become an aunt this summer, I immediately fell in love with her concept even more than I initially did. I purchased her book, and my “Aunticipation” of becoming a “Debut Aunt” rose to a higher level.

SF: What is a “Savvy Auntie”?

MN: She strives to be as savvy as she can possible be, just as a parent does. She understands that she’s not perfect. She understands that she’s always learning, but she also knows that her role in this child’s life is really influential and really important. And from the day she hears she’s going to be an aunt until her nieces and nephews are grown adults, there’s always a time and opportunity to connect with them, to bond with them, and to really be a positive influence for them.

SF: We recently asked Long Island women what it means for them to be an aunt. We’ve profiled some of the most heartwarming stories.

What does being an aunt mean to you?

MN: Being an aunt, to me, personally, means being able to love, support, inspire, and encourage my nieces and nephews to be the best they can be. Their parents do an extraordinary job,

but simply because I’m another grownup they trust, I can offer them different experiences. I always wished I were a mother.

Unfortunately, that hasn’t come for me. But as I say: Babies are born from the womb.

Maternity is born from the soul.

There are many ways to be a mother.

SF: An “Auntiepedia” is a dictionary of terms used to describe

“Aunthood”. How did you come up with the idea of the “Auntiepedia”?

MN: The “Auntiepedia” came about organically since I began developing Savvy Auntie in 2007.

The “Auntourage,” as I call it, is a tribe, and every tribe needs its own language. It brings the community closer together. I just love seeing aunts and godmothers Tweet, Facebook or Instagram and post

something that includes a word from the “Auntiepedia” or the Savvy Auntie hash tag. It connects us with each other, and that is powerful. Savvy Auntie has really become a movement. It’s extraordinary to watch.

SF: Please give advice to our readers who are in their mid-thirties that don’t necessarily have a niece or nephew, but a special bond with their friends’ children.

MN: At Savvy Auntie, an ABR (Auntie by Relation) is just as significant as an ABC (Auntie by Choice).

A Savvy Auntie is any woman in a child’s life who is not their mother or grandmother.

And whether by relation or by choice, aunthood is not a legal obligation like parenthood is. So every boo boo we kiss, every little hand we hold, every hug we give is a gift.

And no child has suffered from too much love.

It’s important to note that these women, while childless themselves, and 52% single, never-married, are just as satisfied with their lives as women in general (61% vs.

62%, respectively).

SF: Explain to Long Island women the theory behind the PANK (Professional Aunt No Kids) MN: The PANK is the niche I uncovered when I had the idea for Savvy Auntie. I’m a marketer by trade and realized that while I had a pretty cosmopolitan lifestyle as a savvy senior executive for a global beauty company, literally flying back and forth to Paris, France, while living the best of New York City, I was not very savvy about the most important people in my life: my nephews and nieces. Marketers were not reaching me. And yet, I very much wanted to know what children needed and wanted.

At the time, I looked at U.S. Census Fertility data and discovered that nearly 50 percent of American women are childless. And yet, most marketers are focused on moms. I saw that there was an opportunity to reach women who wanted to know how to put a smile on those kids’ faces and offer their parents what they needed, too.

SF: The fifth Annual Auntie’s Day® is July 28th, 2013.

Tell us the story behind this National Holiday that we owe to you! Where is the celebration held?

MN: Like Mother’s Day, Auntie’s Day® is a holiday to celebrate and honor the aunt or godmother, or any woman in a child’s life-like their nanny, teacher, coach, neighbor, cousin, etc., who invests her discretionary time and money in that child.

While parents are stretched to their limits, PANKs are able and happy to offer support to the children in their lives in meaningful ways. They may be secondary caregivers, but with their emotional, financial and material gifts, not to mention their quality time and positive influence, PANKs play a primary role in the vitality of the American Family Village.

I felt these women deserved a day set apart to be recognized and acknowledged for all that they did.

Savvy Aunties are often the unsung heroes of the family.

SF: As a toy expert, you launched the Savvy Auntie Coolest Toy Awards. What prompted you to take this on?

In December 2012, I released a national joint-study with Weber Shandwick and KRC Research on the “Power of the PANK”. We discovered that 23 million American women, or one-in-five women, are PANKs, i.e. a childless woman, 18+, who has at least one child in her life whom she adores. These generous women spend $387 per child in their life, per year, and 76% spend over $500 per child per year. Collectively, with a baseline of just one child per PANK, that’s a $9 billion untapped market.

MN: Most toys and other gifts for kids are marketed to parents. Meanwhile, Savvy Aunties spend a lot on those birthday gifts and holiday gifts. As a toy industry expert, I go to the toy fairs, speak with toy brand managers as well as with toy industry analysts to get the scoop on which toys are expected to be the best selling toys of the year. Every aunt wants to maintain her ‘cool aunt’ status, of course. The Savvy Auntie Coolest Toy Awards, which I release every fourth quarter, help aunts to do just that.

And it’s not just on toys. We’ve learned from the PANK study that 34% of PANKs contribute to a child’s

In high school, she started a rock band, with the dream of writing and performing her own music. After her Harvard University graduation, she continued to pursue music and her passion for rock-nroll.

Today, Lourds is Broadway-bound as the creator of CHIX 6, the 2013 critically acclaimed, original musical. Lourds breaks all rules and stereotypes of what Broadway should be. CHIX 6 is a diverse musical, running the gamut from pop, punk, 70’s funk, jazz, big band, hip hop, soulful ballads, to anthemic rock, all with the “attitude” of rock and roll. Here are excerpts of my interview with Lourds Lane.

Q. In CHIX 6 (chix6.com) you bring to life the electric-violin playing superhero, “Rise.” How long did it take you to write the book, music, and lyrics?

What was your motivation and inspiration? How does the character you play in the musical mirror your own life?

A. “The initial script and music I wrote in a burst of inspiration in 2008. Back then, the script was raw, there was no male character, but there were kickass super heroines, catchy music, and a lot of heart and magic. It was an extremely music-driven show. The plot was built around stringing fan-favorite songs together. Although a lot of the music was new material, a handful of songs were songs that were big hits with the fans that I’ve played with my band for years. I enlisted all my rocker, singer and musician friends to join me on stage for a reading at the Zipper Theatre, and it was clear from the uproarious double standing ovation, and the early interest from our Tony Award winning/nominated creative team, that we were onto something BIG.” “But that early script is nothing like where the show is

now. Right now, the show is all about the storytelling.

Although the music is still catchy and modern, the script drives the show, not the music. It’s all about a heart-warming story and characters you care about. I’ve written a plethora of new songs, which I’m really excited about, and took away some of the old fan favorites, in order to propel the book, which is the top priority.”

“I’m still writing this show. 5 years…and still creating… and I don’t doubt that the rewrites will keep continuing until opening night on Broadway.”

But for me, the most important thing is to empower our future change-makers, disruptors, and world leaders. If a young girl is inspired to pick up an instrument, sing, act, draw, or just CREATE, because of the characters or the message of CHIX 6, then I did what I set out to do.”

Q. You are also the creator, host, and promoter of the NYC-based Medusa Festival (medusafestival. com), featuring the best emerging femalefronted bands in the country, and the founder of The Lightning Girl Fun-Dation, an arts-based educational program for girls. Do you feel woman and girls in the music industry have different obstacles than their male counterparts? Is so, how and why?

A. “The music industry has come a long way, but it is still dominated by men. From the record company presidents, to the music journalist, tour managers, production managers, the producers, and engineers. The main obstacle is that females are taken less seriously in these roles, especially the musicians. I’ve seen it firsthand. There still exists a preemptive assumption that female musicians will be less competent players before they are even heard. The same is true in the comic book industry. Female roles are typically fantasy characters drawn by men-babes with massive cleavage carrying an uzi. Where are the truly iconic female super heroines today? It’s high time we place truly empowered female iconic super heroines into the market, as well as female musicians who SHRED onstage. I hope to provide role models that young girls can aspire to, with their power and talent leading, as opposed to their overt sexuality.”

Q. Having made such amazing strides already in your career, is there any other avenue you wish to pursue in the future?

“My original motivation and inspiration were all my super heroine singer/musician friends that I played and toured with. My intent was to showcase their amazingness and to create a cool musical platform, featuring strong women, for young girls to aspire to. Now that the show is more script-driven, the actors have changed to Broadway actors, who are equally as amazing, and only the female musicians in the band still come from the underground rock scene. But my mission remains the same. The show, with the message of loving yourself and discovering your own inner superhero, easily resonates

A. “We’re building CHIX 6 to be a global empowerment brand, with the Broadway show being the cornerstone of the brand. The heart is all about service. It’s about the work we are doing in the Lightning Girl Fun-Dation, having kids do art projects to discover a deep connection to their most empowered superhero selves, which, if all goes according to plan, will touch 100,000 kids by the end of next year. There are many tentacles of the brand which we are building, including a whole digital entertainment division, featuring the iconic super heroine characters of CHIX 6, and games and apps that will promote self-esteem. There’s still so much work to do. All I know is, I want to continue to use my art and my voice to positively impact the world. The specifics don’t matter, as long as I continue to do my part in making the world a better place.”

But when I thought about it, the content of the texts reminded me of a book I read when I was a child entitled “CDB”, which translates

to “See the Bee”. Back then, I was so intrigued by the clever way the author used individual letters and numbers to write words and entire sentences. The author of CDB, William Steig, was born in 1907 and he wrote the book in 1968.

Some examples of his work include phrases like “D N S 5 X” which translates into “The hen has five eggs” and “I M A U-M B-N. U R N N-M-L” which means “I am a human being. You are an animal.” Another example is “D D-R S N D I-V” which means “The deer is in the ivy.”

Although Steig’s “language” is not quite the same that the kids use for texting, when I Googled “texting language” and reviewed NetLingo’s “List of Chat Acronyms & Text Message Shorthand”, I was impressed to see that there were quite a few text message phrases I am sure William Steig used in his 1960’s book. In the NetLingo list, I saw expressions like,”NE1” (anyone), “B4U” (before you), “IDL” (ideal), “NME” (enemy), 2G2BT (too good to be true), etc. Who would have thought?

What I learned from this experience: 1. What’s old is still new. A classic children’s book I read decades ago still has relevance today. One definition of the word “classic” is “having lasting significance or worth; enduring”. I wonder if my children will see the same images I did when they read Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet one day? “But, soft! What light through yonder window breaks? It is the east, and Juliet is the sun.” In their minds they will probably see Romeo texting Juliet, “LYKYAMY”translation: Love you, kiss you, already miss you.

2. Without being obtrusive, parents must learn how to keep abreast of what their kids are doing, be in tune with trends, know who their children’s friends are, and know who they are hanging out with in their free time.

Safety Reminder: Learn about safe web surfing and texting by reading articles on the topic, speaking to friends, or attending a personal safety awareness class. Then share this information with your children. Today, parents give their kids cell phones at very young ages believing they will be “safer” with one. This can be a double-edged sword, however. Cell phones and the Internet have become both a danger and a safety aid. A foyer is the welcoming entranceway to a home. It should be apparent from the time you open the front door and enter the foyer.

Some are grand, with beautiful chandeliers illuminating the area. Some are not as grand, but should still depict the entranceway into the home. The foyer should create a warm, inviting, and welcoming feeling upon entering. Lighting and accessories that decorate the space can create a warm and inviting welcome.

Good lighting is the single most important feature of a foyer. If space and height allow, a chandelier adds a touch of extravagance.

Seeking out lighting alternatives to standard ceiling lights, which can cast a harsh glare, is recommended. Another choice is wall sconces, and the size of the foyer will determine what the best lighting choice will be.

Depending on the size of the foyer, I would suggest an entranceway table, chest or bench that can provide storage too. It shouldn’t be cluttered, but it doesn’t mean that it should lack personality. Accessories can add a touch of style and personality. A decorative mirror over the table, and some family photos on the wall can add character to the foyer. Think of dressing your walls the way you think of dressing yourself–a great way to express your creativity. Just as you choose jewelry, shoes and bags to enhance an outfit, you choose colors, patterns, and textures to enhance a room. Same thing, except only one has walls.

Most of us accessorize walls with wallpaper, artwork, lighting or photos.

Even paint color is an accessory.

Choosing the right piece for an outfit or a room is a process. Choose the type of wall accessory that appeals to your senses. Then, decide how to coordinate it with the feeling of the space. Lastly, determine how to display, or arrange, your wall accessory on the wall.

Here’s an example: If family photos are your choice for the living room, you can make them work by displaying them as a collection on one wall.

As a unit, they will become a focal point when someone enters the room. Colored photos-even black and white photos, can conflict with other elements in the space, paintings or other kinds of artwork. So turn your photos into artwork. Photographs immediately become more “art-like” when converted to sepia tones.

Framing and matting provide the finishing touches. A traditional living room would call for a more ornate and decorative frame. On the other hand, a clean and simple frame would be appropriate for a contemporary look. Bring the room together by using a hue from your window treatment or from a piece of furniture. Dupioni silk is a good choice for a luxurious feel and look; canvas would work well for a more contemporary feel.

Deciding how to display your photos takes as much thought as how to fabricate them. If you want to express structure and order, place photos symmetrically. GREENalternatives • Greasy, grimy range hood & stove top? A few drops of vegetable oil on a paper towel or cloth will remove all that cooking spatter build up, leaving them shining.

• Remove tough, stuck on food from pots, pans and BBQ grills by making a paste of peroxide and cream of tartar.

Apply to surface, let sit for 15-20 minutes (or longer for tough spots) and wipe away with a damp cloth. Repeat as necessary.

• After you clean the grates, make your BBQ exterior shine by sprinkling baking soda onto a damp sponge and gently rubbing over the exterior surfaces to remove those greasy cooking spatters. Rinse with water and buff to a shine.

• Clean your dishwasher by pouring some white vinegar in a dishwasher-safe cup and placing it on the top rack of your empty dishwasher. Run on the hottest setting. The vinegar helps remove greasy grime, sanitizes and deodorizes.

• Summer is here, and that means fleas.

Placing a few drops of tea tree oil in your pet’s crate or bedding will help keep fleas away.

• A few drops of peppermint essential oil on cotton balls placed in mice-prone areas like your pantry will help keep those pesky critters away (without toxic chemicals!)

• Remove wax and dirt from all that fresh summer fruit by filling your sink with water and adding a cup of vinegar. Soak for about 10 minutes for a thorough, nontoxic cleaning. Wash berries in this mixture as soon as you bring them home, dry and then refrigerate.

This method helps kill off mold spores and will extend their life.

• Freshen your mattress and remove dust mites by adding a few drops of lavender essential oil to a cup of baking soda and mix well. Shake mixture on mattress, leave on for about 15-20 minutes, then vacuum.

• Are you storing stinky sports equipment in your home? Non-porous or non-washable items can be freshened by simply spraying or wiping down with straight vinegar, vodka or alcohol (test in a small area first for color fastness.) All three will help kill the bacteria that cause odors and will not leave a lingering scent once dry.

• Stinky shoes? Brew a cup of black tea, let cool, then spray inside each shoe. The tannin, found in black tea, is an effective deodorizer. You can also combine a teaspoon of your favorite essential oil with a cup of water and mist into shoes nightly.

Summer is here, and that means fleas.

Pet overpopulation in the U.S. is a problem. In fact, the ASPCA estimates up to 7 million dogs and cats enter shelters each year in our country. It’s heartbreaking for sure, but there are things we all can do to help. Here are 5 ways you can make a difference for homeless pets.

Consider Adoption If you’re considering adding a new pet to your family, consider adoption. You can find almost any breed, age, or temperament of pet in shelters or rescues.

Love a certain breed? Do some research to find out if there is a breed-specific rescue near you.

Want a puppy or kitten? Shelters on Long Island (and across the country!) have plenty! Looking for an older, mellower pet?

There are many senior pets in need of homes.

Foster a Dog or Cat Fostering a pet is a great way to help shelters and rescues, because some pets do much better in a home setting while they’re waiting for their forever home. By opening up your home to a dog or cat, you create space

in the facility for another pet in need. Depending on your lifestyle, you can choose to foster a pet for a day, a week, a month or more.

What was your biggest obstacle?

My biggest obstacle was to find ways to promote myself and bring business to myself.

That way, I could develop satisfied clientele who would recommend me to other potential clients. It might be old-fashioned, but I very much believe in word-of-mouth when it comes to recommendations. Why not get opinions straight from the people who have worked with me in the past? Anyone can go on the Internet and write up wonderful reviews about themselves to attract clients.

How did you overcome the obstacle?

I started providing services for friends of friends and family to get the word out. I set reasonable prices, and created various service packages, so my prices would suit every type of brides’ budget. I built my website (all on my own), and put a lot of thought (and changes!) into all of the information and layouts. Then I began using social media to advertise: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, and a blog. I looked into advertising on The Knot, and finally made the decision to go for it, that is when my business really blossomed.

My past clients stepped forward, writing reviews, sharing my information with newly engaged couples, and expressing their satisfaction with my services through very heartwarming words.

What I thought would be the hardest part of starting a business ended up being one of the most rewarding parts.

What or who helped you achieve success?

My clients helped, and continue to help me achieve success. I also owe part of my success to a good friend of mine, Jacki Costello, who works side-by-side with me styling hair for our clients. We do many weddings together, and she makes it so much fun. She’s also always spreading the word and giving recommendations, which as I said before, I feel are SO important. I could not be so successful without her.

What was your biggest achievement or accomplishment?

My biggest achievement was showing one of my clients how to use makeup to cover her flaws and “fake” her features. This young woman had terrible cystic acne, and after working with her, she cried at how beautiful I helped her feel. When she said “feel”, not “look”, that made my day.

Use social media. Go out of your way to make your clients happy, as they will be sharing their experience with you to others. Be personable and kind. Always carry business cards with you that have your contact information and your website information.

Why did you start this type of business?

In my previous business as a wholesale, handcrafts artist, I’d made a huge shift from a great Wall Street career. And while I loved being in business, that particular business did not use my strengths, had high costs to operate and had to overcome real objections to my raw materials (I worked with real and gorgeous insects making amazing wall and table art). I was searching for an alternative (didn’t consider getting a job; I knew my own path was ahead of me, just not with this enterprise).

At that time, 1999, coaching as a profession off the athletic field was new, I just heard about it and the more I explored, the more it seemed a perfect fit for me: I’m consultative, love to talk about business and needed a change to bring to fruition the vision I had for the ideal business that would support and expand my life.

Once I realized coaching was definitely the right fit, I enrolled in Coach U, gaining a superb education from the master and founder of the field, Thomas Leonard.

And, once I began to build my own business as a coach, I knew I’d been my ideal client! I began to work with other small business owners who’d devised a business initially to create a better life and instead, found slavery.

My goal, with every client, is to help them build the business that’s a win-win: it provides a solution to their customers’ needs and contributes to their better life.

What was your biggest obstacle?

As coaching was still quite new then, it was often challenging to describe what I was able to do and how the tools of coaching were different from those of trainers or consultants. I met with a lot of blank stares.

This resulted in lots of initial frustration and difficult selling experiences.

How did you overcome the obstacle?

So, the solution was to build a network of other new coaches who would band together to create support, community, education and marketing muscle. With a partner, I built the largest networking group for professional coaches on Long Island, United Coaching

Associates. We produced a work/ life balance day, member retreats, brought in guest speakers and built alliances to help each other grow our businesses.

What or who helped you achieve success?

By building a community of coaches I had my own support system. Also, my husband was a huge support, encouraging me to shift into this next business. And, the timing was right; in the last 10 years, coaching has launched into a world-wide phenomena, providing support, accountability and results for people who need a little extra help getting over a temporary obstacle or maximizing an unexpected opportunity. It can be found in every situation, personal, professional or social.

What was your biggest achievement or accomplishment?

The fact that it supports a nice life means I’m delivering real results to real clients and that’s huge! Also, public recognition has reinforced my pride: Top 5 coaching blogs 2012; Top 5 productivity gurus, 2012; Top 100 women in e-commerce, 2012; Top 50 women, 2011 LIBN. And, now shifting my marketing to online venues and building a reputation there. I continue to grow and use that to assist clients, too!

Networking is successful when you think about helping others before you help yourself; who can you connect at an event? Who do you know who needs the help of someone you met yesterday? Who can benefit from an article or event listing you just found?

Words of wisdom?

Some providers believe you have to ‘show me the money’ before they’ll deliver value. I believe the opposite: give as much value as you can and that’s when people decide they’re willing to spend money to work with you. When the latter is a factor, it is critical to be resourceful and open to researching economical technology solutions to keep your vision moving forward. This is exactly the mindset of the founders of Passenger Project.

Passenger Project is a cause-based company that raises funds for up to five charities each month through the sale of apparel at passengerproject.org, or at their monthly events held at Cue Nine (an upscale billiards and sports bar) in Levittown, NY. All of the apparel is designed and printed in America by the project founders. The founders of Passenger Project include Kevin Ciminelli, Ian Borneman and Mike Califano.

A family friend customized a content management system for them to run their business. This system allows the team to input data that will automatically propagate their website at a pre-planned time. When asked about their payment platform, Kevin responded, “We were originally going to have a credit card system incorporated into our website, which would have required special ecommerce certification and security

protocols, but that was an expensive route.

Instead, we use a service called Big Cartel.

It is great for small businesses, they charge a small subscription fee, and allow you to customize the entire store yourself.”

The Five Worst Mistakes You Can Make on an Interview The job search process is tedious and frustrating, but when you are unemployed or under-employed, it is a necessary evil for most of us. The first step in the process is to develop a well thought-out resume that properly explains your core skills and competencies to prospective employers. If you’re lucky, the next step is an interview with the company or an Executive Recruiter, either in person or on the phone. After 30 years of interviewing candidates, I find a lot of the interviewees make similar mistakes that can cost them the job.

1. Focusing on what you want as a candidate without listening to what the company needs. First of all, it’s not about you! Until you thoroughly understand what the company is looking for, by listening to the interviewer, how can you possibly know which of your skills and competencies to describe? Let the interviewer explain what they need and then you can describe your accomplishments that fill that need-and get the job!

2. Talking over the interviewer.

Communications skills are important in almost all positions, and listening and being able to succinctly explain your abilities is a significant part of these essential skills. Be respectful and let the interviewer lead the interview.

Come to each interview prepared with a list of your competencies that best fit the organization, but wait until the proper opening to explain them.

3. Being distracted while on a phone interview. A phone interview or screening interview is just as important as an in-person interview. If that call does not go well, you will not be passed

on to the next step in the interviewing process. While talking on a cell phone, if the reception is bad, call the interviewer back from a land line. Remain seated and attentive during a phone interview; don’t walk around and/or continue your chores while talking to the interviewerit is disrespectful and distracting.

4. Negotiating before the interview even begins. Negotiating time off and salary should not be done until AFTER the interviewing process is over. Let the prospective employer get to know you and want to hire you before you start negotiating.

5. Dressing inappropriately for the interview. I know some of you will be thinking, “I always look nice when I go on an interview!” But let me share a news flash with the women reading this article: tight or revealing clothing or anything you would consider wearing to a nightclub is not appropriate for an interview! Men are also offenders by wearing wrinkled or musty suits that they pulled out of the closet for an interview and don’t even bother cleaning before they come into my office!

Most people think that all insurance companies do is take their money. I am very fortunate to work for a large insurance company, Allstate, that believes in giving back to the community. Since 1952, the Allstate Foundation, a charitable foundation funded through Allstate, has been supporting a large range of programs across the country. Three issues: Hurricane Preparedness, Teen Safe Driving and Domestic Violence are in the forefront of the Foundation’s initiatives.

I have worked with the Foundation on two of their issues, Teen Safe Driving and Domestic Violence. Teen Safe Driving: Allstate has provided grants to every high school in the United States for their Driver Education Programs.

I have helped train young drivers on insurance needs and programs against texting in five high schools on Long Island. Every year, Allstate holds a competition “Act out Loud”, which will grant $10,000 to the most inventive program high school students can create with the theme against texting while driving.

The Allstate Foundation and the National Network to End Domestic Violence have partnered to assist economic and financial education to domestic violence survivors.

By teaching financial skills and knowledge to victims of domestic violence, it will empower them to leave their abusive relationship and thrive on their own.

Through my work with the Foundation I have been able to provide grants to several organizations that I volunteer with, such as Suffolk County Women’s Business Enterprise Coalition, Dress for Success and St. Joseph’s CYO program.

Grants are available for state and local coalitions and not-for-profits to fund projects in four areas: financial literacy, micro-loans and IDAs, job readiness and training, and micro-enterprise. “It’s been a long road…but there is actually a moment when you choose to say: THIS is what I’m going to be doing with the rest of my life.”

A successful actress, voiceover artist, and producer in New York City, Marisa Vitali’s Strong Island roots established the foundation to be where she is today. The arts were always a large part of her childhood; frequent trips to the city were a staple of family outings including visits to museums, attending the theater, coupled with fond memories as a nine-year-old staying up late on school nights to attend the opera with her dad at the Met (even though she would fall asleep before the end of the opera). Christmas was not officially launched without seeing The Nutcracker at New York City Ballet.

In addition to these family forays, her k-12 education in the Northport School District included an abundance of music and art programs. Choirs, orchestras, bands, musicals, and a theater program experience that was both a curriculum track and an after-

school musical club. “I couldn’t even imagine what public school would be like without an arts program. For me, it’s like, our human spirit is the spirit of creativity, so to not have an outlet for that–to not have a place to cultivate that–I just don’t know what that human experience would be like, and I can’t say it’s one that I would want to live.”

In fact, she credits the arts for saving her life. Despite her acceptance to the prestigious New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, Marisa’s life spiraled into the world of drug addiction. Stemming from childhood bullying and feelings of inadequacy, Marisa’s drinking and drugging became the means to self-medicate that pain. “For me, having that first drink [became] the first time, I didn’t feel that pain. I don’t need to feel inferior, I’m not good enough. I don’t belong.” Going to clubs consumed her seven days a week. Despite this lifestyle, she

think that the more life experience you can bring to your story, the more fully that story can be told.”

excelled in all of her studies. Scheduling classes early in the day would accommodate her party existence to maintain her Dean’s list status. But when heroin became the drug of choice, Marisa’s existence became a vicious cycle of finding the next high. After years of denial, Marisa hit bottom and decided to get clean.

At the time, the only promising venture she could imagine for herself was to sell perfume at a department store and “not that there’s anything wrong with working at Bloomie’s, but to think that a University graduate with a BFA was as big as I could comprehend at that time when I first got clean.” This was when her mentor, Lawrence Sacharow, a Broadway director, suggested she get back into acting. “It was the most healing experience I’ve ever had…and in that moment I realized that, for me, that was what I had to live for. At that point in time, that was the reason for me to stay clean and not go back to using.”

Having been through so much, Marisa used that life experience to culminate in the creation of the film Grace, a screenplay by Chris Ordal, an award-winning director and screenwriter. The story is inspired by Marisa’s first year clean where the main character, Janice, finds herself back at home, poor, waitressing at the local diner and in a custody battle for her daughter.

Faced with the truth of the wreckage of her past, she must cope with a series of events that transpire without going back to using drugs. What is of utmost importance to Marisa is that the film “starts the conversation of recovery between addicts and addicts, non-addicts and non-addicts.” Her desire is to use it as a teaching tool because “art is healing, and what’s the best conversation starter other than the amazing piece of art or whatever forms that may be, to get people to feel comfortable to start talking.”

As for the vital importance of an arts education, Marisa argues that, who among us hasn’t had to speak in front of an audience, be it a committee or interview? Who doesn’t give a toast at a wedding which requires poise and confidence to deliver? “The arts,” Marisa asserts, “allow you to be who you are and accept you regardless.

Whether it’s an art class, a play, or music-the arts are an outlet for that emotion, for that feeling.” And like life imitating art, this is NOT an act.

SF: Tell us a little about your experience growing up in New York.

RR: I loved growing up in New York.

I feel growing up in an area that has the best food, fashion and overall melting pot of so many cultures is the best experience that I am still enjoying on the daily.

SF: In movies, men in the mob are portrayed as liars, cheaters, gamblers and murderers. How is it, really? Is there as much truth to this life as Hollywood portrays?

RR: Anyone and anything affiliated with crime-obviously these are some of the characteristics associated with it. Hollywood portrays it to a certain point, but in Hollywood they need to make things bigger then what they actually are, to sell tickets.

SF: How was your relationship with your grandfather?

SF: Tell us about your experience raising four kids by yourself.

RR: My relationship with my grandfather could be characterized as the closest possible father/ daughter relationship. It wasn’t the regular grandfather/granddaughter relationship, as I was closer to him than my own father. He was the only person to get me to do something that I never wanted to do. He was the only person I respected and listened to.

RR: It is probably one of the hardest and scariest responsibilities that a person has to go through. Not having that significant other to morally and financially support, and make decisions as parents together is extremely tough. Many couples are divorced, but still have the father of their children around to raise their children together. I am here raising four beautiful kids solo, and that goes past the financial part. I am responsible for caring, molding, guiding, and overall protecting these children for the rest of their lives. I am grateful God has blessed me with these four beautiful children, but it is an extremely hard thing to do.

However, seeing my daughter come home being on Honor Roll year after year, is just one example that I am doing something right and God is watching over us!

SF: What advice can you give to single mothers on Long Island trying to make ends meet?

RR: I think you first have to sit down and evaluate what hours you can spend outside the home working, what kind of care you can get your children when you are not around, and if you can afford someone to watch them. A lot of times, as moms we spend so much money on childcare, and in the end it doesn’t add up financially. Moms also should think of ways or ideas that can make their lives easier, and if there is any way they can turn that concept into a business idea or venture.

SF: How was your experience living in Jordan with your ex-husband?

RR: Jordan is a place that is beautiful for their culture, the people and land.

Unfortunately, I had different levels of abuse with my husband while living there. I was trying to get a

divorce, and had different hurdles to overcome to get out of the country. Overall, I liked Jordan and the people. I would have to label it as a bittersweet experience.

SF: How are your kids adjusting to being in the media?

Are they being treated fairly?

RR: My kids have been through so many changes and obstacles in their lives that this was a walk in the park for them. My children are treated fairly in many situations, and as a mother I wouldn’t tolerate my kids being treated any other way.

SF: You are engaged! Congratulations! On the show, Karen Gravano and a few of the other Mob Wives expressed concerns about your future fiancé. Are they acting more supportive now?

Being engaged in general is something that is pleasurable, but also comes with a lot of pressure. You have people that are normally happy for you, but then you have the pressure of when the actual wedding is taking place. For my special case, the actual date is up in the air. The type of grape used to make wine typically defines the wine. But, great wines do not come from just anywhere. Different wine grapes respond differently to heat, sun, water and even wind. Where the grapes are grown impact the greatness of wine significantly.

There are over 5,000 grape varieties, and approximately 150 of those are planted commercially. There are six grapes that provide the backbone for wine production throughout the world. These six, known as the noble grapes in the wine world are Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir. These grapes have been cultivated all over the world, and been made into distinguished, even legendary wines. Although we can’t taste them all, we can start here.

Chardonnay is the number one white wine grape sold in the world. Its flavor and aromas are easily influenced by where it’s grown and how it’s made. Fruit flavors range from apple and lime in cooler climates, to tropical fruits flavors in warmer places. When barreled in oak, it takes on a richness characterized by honey and butter flavors. When fermented in stainless steel, it often retains more mineral flavors and comes across as fresher on the palate. Chardonnay excels in Burgundy, France, and cool coastal areas of California produce excellent Chardonnay. Chardonnay is a favorite with seafood. Minerally versions, like those from Chablis, France, pair classically with oysters.

Riesling is often low in alcohol and light in body. Flavors of peaches, apricots and melon are predominant. If aged, the wine takes takes on honey flavors

and aromas. Rieslings can be dry, but sweeter ones seem to be more popular. The grapes grow well in Germany, the Alsace region of France, the Finger Lakes region of New York, and parts of Australia and Washington State. Riesling pairs well with spicy foods, consider Chinese or Thai.

Sauvignon Blanc is a fresh, crisp and aromatic wine known for its grapefruit and grassy flavors. Look for the grape from the Loire region of France, either Pouilly-Fume or Sancerre. In Bordeaux, nearly all white wines are Sauvignon Blanc and often blended with Semillon.

In the New World, New Zealand has emerged as a stellar Sauvignon Blanc producer. Sauvignon Blanc is a food-friendly wine that goes well with many seafood, poultry and vegetable dishes.

Merlot is a soft, supple wine with nice fruit flavors of plums and blackberries, and occasionally leather and chocolate aromas.

Typically, it is ready to drink earlier than Cabernet Sauvignon. In Bordeaux, Merlot is predominantly planted in Pomeral and SaintEmilion. New World Merlot shines in places like California, Chile and Washington State. Long Island and Italy produce sleeker and less fruity style Merlot that may be more to your liking. Merlots pair well with heavily sauced foods and BBQ.

Cabernet Sauvignon is more assertive than Merlot, with more tannin and greater aging potential.

It can have flavors of blackberries, plums, black currants, and cassis.

excels in Napa, California, where it produces smooth, ripe wines.

Washington State, Chile and Australia are also making excellent Cabernet Sauvignon. Classically Cabernet Sauvignon is paired with steak and chops Pinot Noir made its mark initially in Burgundy, France. These wines are extremely expensive and limited in production. Pinot Noirs are delicate wines that taste of cherries, raspberries and strawberries. As the wine ages, more complex and earthy aromas emerge. In the New World, amazing Pinot Noir is being made in Oregon, New Zealand, and some of the cooler areas of California. Pinot Noir is classically paired with salmon, pork and vegetable dishes.

Selecting wines from where they are traditionally grown to where they thrive can guarantee you an exciting wine tasting experience.

recipeblog [ delicious ] With Spring upon us, it’s a great time to make a hearty Surf & Turf, with this Beef Wellington and Baked Clams Oreganata. Having honed my culinary skills in Breckenridge, Colorado and Charleston, South Carolina, I love to combine different Surf & Turf pairings, which I will try to keep as a theme for GEM Magazine.

Beef Wellington 5 oz Filet Mignon 1 Cup Spinach 1 Cup Sliced Mushrooms 1 Sheet Puff Pastry 2 Tbs Butter 2 Cloves Garlic 2 Tbs Extra Virgin Olive Oil 1 oz Heavy Cream I like to grill the filet mignon first, just to put grill marks on the steak. Sauté 1 tbs butter and oil, add minced garlic and spinach until slightly wilted. Add heavy cream and let reduce until consistency of cream of spinach. Roll out puff pastry and place grilled filet in the center. Add spinach with as little moisture as possible, and seal puff pastry around filet. Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees, place Wellington on a sheet tray and cook until puff pastry starts to brown, about 15 minutes. In a medium sauce pan, use remaining butter and oil, add sliced mushrooms until a beautiful golden brown. Remove Beef Wellington from oven and cover with mushrooms.

Baked Clams Oreganata 6 Little Neck Clams 1 Glove Garlic 1 Tbs Fresh Oregano 2 Tbs Fresh Parsley 1 Tbs Extra Virgin Olive Oil 1 Tbs Butter 2 oz Breadcrumbs 2 oz Grated Cheese 2 oz White Wine In a small sauté pan, heat oil and butter, and sauté garlic until slightly cooked-without browning. Add wine, breadcrumbs, grated cheese and chopped herbs. Shuck the clams, add mixture to the clams and bake for 10 minutes until golden brown. Enjoy! n Chef Eddie G coast2coastcuisine.com
