Families with disabled children face many difficulties but they have told us that they really benefit from being able to access short breaks. Since April 2011 all local authorities have to provide a range of short breaks for families with disabled children aged from 0 to 18 years. What is a short break? Short breaks provide fun, leisure and social activities for disabled children and young people outside the school day. This enables them to try new experiences, both with and away from their siblings and parents, and giving them opportunities to increase their confidence and learn new skills. Short breaks give parents and carers a break from their caring role giving them the chance

3

to rest, catch up on day-to-day activities and spend time with other family members. Short breaks cover a whole range of activities like an hour’s sports activity, a summer play scheme, evening cinema trip or a fun day for the whole family. Included in this book is the information required to access these services. Some organisations offer more than one type of service.

CHILDREN and FAMILY CENTRES There are 45 Children and Family Centres (CFCs) in West Sussex, and between them they cover the whole County. They offer advice, information and guidance for all families with children aged 0 to 5 or for aged 0 to 19 for children with disabilities. Children and Family Centres also offer services at the centre buildings or out in the community. The programmes on offer will differ from area to area, according to local need. Up-to-date programmes can be found on the West Sussex County Council website, where you can search for a centre near you. www.westsussex.gov.uk/living/children and_families/children_and_family_ centres.aspx

Extra help to find childcare Is choosing childcare that’s right for you and your child a challenge? This can be especially true if you have a child with a disability or additional needs. In fact, we know that many parents of disabled children feel that childcare is not an option for them. The Family Information Service (FIS) is here to offer extra help and support. Working as part of the Early Childhood Service, the FIS can: l Contact childcare providers on your behalf. l Organise a face-to-face appointment at your local Children and Family Centre. l Request support from our advisory team for you and the childcare provider. l Arrange visits to a wide range of childcare settings, accompanied if need be. l Help you access Free Entitlement funding for your child if eligible. Within the Early Childhood Service different people work directly with childcare providers to advise and support them to develop their skills, knowledge and practice. This may include additional training, changes in how they operate, and ideas to help meet the needs of individual children and the setting as a whole. Together we

will explore all possible childcare options to help you find childcare to meet your child’s needs.
