Happy New Year! 2025 is a year I’m personally excited about; Gemporia has officially entered its third decade in business, and we plan to start as we mean to go on by continuing to remind you, our loyal customers, of why you choose us to help you expand your jewellery collections.
As is customary at this time of year, we begin 2025 with an extravagant January Sale, allowing you to start your year with incredible savings on some even more incredible pieces. Or maybe you’d like to switch things up for the new year? In which case, New Year, New You is all about embracing change and exploring new styles and designs. Not forgetting to commemorate our friends in the Far East, Chinese New Year honours the Year of the Snake with handcrafted jewellery rich in cultural significance, and we end the month with Vicenza, a specially curated event based on our findings from Italy’s renowned Vicenzaoro Jewellery Boutique Show.

Hi! I’m Caroline, and as Director of Sales I’m really looking forward to bringing the Buying and Sales teams closer together in 2025, with our customers at the heart of every decision.
I’d love to know what you’d like to see more of on TV; my favourite thing to watch is when the teams have transformed the set, and you feel like you’re in another part of our Gemporia department store!
We have so many exciting pieces coming from our recent buying trip to India – we have an incredible team there who live and breathe gemstone jewellery. We’ve also secured some crazy deals for you which you’ll see in our January Sale! One of the gems that excites me most is the Type IIa Diamonds – tell me anywhere else in the UK where you can walk through their doors and get these! It might be one of the best discoveries we’ve ever made.
In our job it’s easy to wish your life away – we’ve bought products until April/May, and I’m excited for everyone to see all the fantastic jewellery we’ve bought! The pieces we’ve created for Chinese New Year belong on a catwalk; we’ve designed snake clasps, snake rings, not to mention a candle and snake homewares to go with them. The smell is divine!
I really enjoyed and benefitted from meeting some of our lovely customers, too. Alison told me she likes shepherd hook earrings because they’re easy to put on and they’re not too heavy. Although it sounds like a small piece of information, it was so valuable to us and has helped inform buying decisions whilst keeping customers at the forefront of what we do. To me, it is a small adjustment that can impact a lot of people.

Ginkgo Leaf
January at Gemporia features an exciting Chinese New Year event, and we’re commemorating it with homewares as well as jewellery! The 4 Cs of Diamond Grading
When grading a colourless Diamond, its quality is determined by analysing what the industry calls the Four Cs: Carat Weight, Clarity, Cut, and Colour. This scale is used worldwide, and here we explain each of the Cs and how they contribute to a Diamond’s grade.
Carat Weight
It’s easy to certify the largest Diamond as the most valuable; however, its size alone isn’t an accurate way to calculate the value of a Diamond, or any gemstone for that matter. Not every Diamond of the same carat weight will cost the same, as you must take the other three Cs into account, too. For example, if the Diamond is large but poorly cut, it will most likely be less valuable than a smaller stone that is cut well.
Clarity
Clarity refers to the purity of a gem and its characteristics and inclusions. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) uses the scale below to grade a Diamond’s clarity.
FL all the way through to I1 are eye-clean, meaning they look perfect to the eye. However, unlike all other gems that are graded by eye, Diamonds are graded under 10X magnification to increase their ‘appearance of rarity’. As gemstones go,
Diamonds are relatively common, and this grading system helps to distinguish stones that generally look identical when viewed with the naked eye.
Cut
A lapidarist (gem cutter) is responsible for the quality of a Diamond’s cut. Diamonds can be cut into many shapes (heart, pear, marquise, etc.), but most are cut into what’s known as a ‘round brilliant’. Created by Marcel Tolkowsky in 1919, the round brilliant cut is thought to maximise the Diamond’s qualities the most – these qualities being fire (dispersion of light), scintillation (sparkle), and brilliance (the return of light to the eye from the gem).
Colour
A Diamond’s colour is graded on an alphabetical scale from D to Z; D is the most colourless, and Z is determined as ‘light yellow’. (Any Diamond below this is considered ‘fancy coloured’).
The scale is split into five groups, as you’ll see above. We would usually recommend G-H graded Diamonds because, although it isn’t the top colour grade, we believe they are best value for money as the difference between G-H Diamonds and D-F Diamonds is incredibly slim, whereas the price can vary greatly.
