From Bihar With Love

Beloved Prayer Partners in Christ Jesus, Greetings to you in the name of the Father, Who is intent on reviving us, Who has the power to give life to our mortal bodies through the work of Holy Spirit (Hos 6:1, Rom 8:11). A few of God’s servants and His people, troubled by the state of affairs in the church, the body of Christ, have recognized the need for revival in the church and have taken steps to have the revival fire burning. At a time like this, in order to understand and seek revival in the church, I would like to briefly share, through this letter, a few concepts on revival from Isaiah 30-32.

What effects does revival of God’s people, through the work of the Holy Spirit, have on a nation? From the gospel perspective such a nation would undoubtedly experience increase in gospel ministry and ministry in far flung, hitherto unreached areas. At the same time the nation itself would experience blessing and peace under a just and fair government. “Until the Spirit is poured out upon us from on high, and the wilderness becomes a fertile field, and the fertile field is considered as a forest” (Isa 32:15).

The Call

June-July 2019

You might wonder if revival is possible in today’s church. What you see all across churches is people vying for positions, ministries with money as their goal, twisting God’s promises and preaching lies, people talking about false dreams and visions, people boasting about themselves having never understood the cross, groups that rob naïve people, people moved with jealousy trying to destroy one another and their ministries, pretentious piety, etc. I can go on and on, on what is happening in the body of Christ today. But the word ‘Yet’ can strengthen us. “Yet the Lord longs to be gracious to you; therefore He will rise up to show you compassion. For the Lord is a God of justice. Blessed are all who wait for him! People of Zion, who live in Jerusalem, you will weep no more. How gracious He will be when you cry for help! As soon as He hears, He will answer you” (Isa 30:18, 19).Don’t these verses give us confidence? “The moon will shine like the sun, and the sunlight will be seven times brighter, like the light of seven full days, when the Lord binds up the bruises of His people and heals the wounds He inflicted” (Isa 30: 26). These promises of God show us how He can change us and how eager He is to do more than we can ever anticipate. If we consider the situation of God’s people during the time of Isaiah, we can see that it was no different from what it is today. It becomes clear therefore that if He was eager then, He would do the same even today.

Let us take a close look at the past situation. They had forgotten that God was their “shelter from the wind and a refuge from the storm, like streams of water in the desert and the shadow of a great rock in a thirsty land” (Isa 32: 2). They had neglected God’s word and instead, appallingly trusted Pharaoh’s (symbol of the world) strength to strengthen them. They went down to Egypt for help, relied on their horses, trusted in the multitude of their chariots and the great strength of their horsemen (Isa 30: 2, 31: 1). Thereby the Egyptians (people otherwise) became their gods (Isa 31: 3). Sadly sometimes, useful servants of God become gods. Instead of the Lord becoming the Shepherd, people are taught to see the shepherd as their Lord. What consequence does this have? ‘‘Those who help will stumble, those who are helped will also fall and all will perish together’’ (Isa 31: 3). In order to get some help or favour, God’s people go after individuals (like political or spiritual leaders in the land). They offer them their riches which these individual carry on donkey’s back (vehicles, in today’s parlance) not realising that such help is utterly useless (Is 30:6). A pointless offering is made giving it a spiritual colour. In themselves they live in spiritual stupor, live a rebellious life, unwilling to hear God’s word and not hesitating to lie (Isa 30:9). And what do they want? - “Tell us pleasant things, prophesy illusions” (Isa 30: 10) and “Stop confronting us with the Holy One of Israel” (Isa 30:11)! Their stage performances are disgusting to Him; their celebrations The Call

are detestable and their customs abhorrent. Besides they glaze them over with songs and hymns played to worldly music performed by celebrities making His Holy Presence to retreat (Amos 5: 21-23). But this is what the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel, says: “In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength, but you would have none of it” (Isa 30.15). How did people respond? They didn’t want to listen. Instead they said, ‘‘we will get our help from Egypt; they will give us swift horses for riding to battle’’ (Isa 30: 15, 16). What is the inner state of mind? - Fear. A thousand will fleeat the threat of one;at the threat of fiveyou will all flee away (Isa 30.17). There is no strength in the inner man; no depth of trust, no hold in relationships. Faith is not even the size of mustard; Lips utter words but the heart is far off. Fear of God remains just what has been taught by men. (Isa 29:13). Even though the church is found in a similar state, we have a Lord who longs to be compassionate (Isa 30:18). “My people are determined to turn from Me.Even though they call Me God Most High,I will by no means exalt them” (Hosea 11.7). Yet, the Lord cries. “How can I hand you over, Israel? You caused your own destruction. Still, you have my favour’’ (Hosea 11.8; 13.9). The prophet also explains what the merciful Lord does when we return to him in repentance: God gives the right The Call

teachers. Your teachers will be hidden no more; with your own eyes you will see them(Isa 30: 20). There certainly were preachers who could identify God but the haughtiness of eyes made them blind. The false preacher’s vanity hid true preachers. Their loud voices uttering falsity, subdued the voice of sound teaching. A lie that is spoken ten times makes it a truth at the cost of real truth. But when the fire of revival falls, the true servant emerges, they are identified and the Word of God begins to be heard. Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it” (Isa 30.21). Not just the eyes, but the ears that hear are also opened. Even those who were called deaf and brood of vipers, turn into people with ears that can hear the still small voice of God. Hallelujah! If you begin to hear the voice of God, then you will begin to identify worthless things. “Then you will desecrate your idols overlaid with silver and your images covered with gold; you will throw them away like a menstrual cloth and say to them, ‘Away with you!” (Isa 30.22). What was once thought to be priceless has now become a symbol of abhorrence. There will be such clarity now. You would know what to turn off, what to loath. You would know to distinguish voices whether they are of God, of man, or of the devil. The Lord, “will also send you rain for the seed you sow in the ground, and the food that comes from the land will be rich and plentiful. In that day your cattle will graze in broad meadows” (Isa 30.23). The Call

6

June-July 2019

There will be gladness and eternal happiness (Isa 30: 29) and the enemy will be made to fall with little force (Isa 31: 8). “No longer will the fool be called noblenor the scoundrel be highly respected” (Isa 32: 5). “The fruit of that righteousness will be peace; its effect will be quietness and confidence forever” (Isaiah 32: 17). The Lord’s protection will be “like birds hovering overhead” (Isa 31: 5). Isn’t this what we all long for? When revival happens, gospel work will flourish, missionary burden will get its thrust, and things that need priority will take its place. Oneness, unity, concern for others, carrying one another’s burdens, untiring labour, abundance of peace due to death of self, enthusiastic charity, zealous divine thoughts, fearless ministry, heart of gratitude, exuberant worship filled with humility and faithfulness and love without deceit will all spring to life. Everyone will return to first love and dedication. May God make each one of us see this happen in our days! Our General Body and the Executive Committee met in Kerala in May 2019. We studied the Word, received challenges and with God’s help took the following resolutions: 1. By God’s grace GEMS would be completing 50 years of ministry by 2022 and it has been decided to stabilize and expand all the seven types of ministries ((a) Evangelism and Church planting, (b) Discipleship &Training, (c) Educational Services, (d) Medical Ministries, (e) Humanitarian Services, (f) Revival Ministries, and The Call
