ANTONY IS FEELING
Blue are firmly back in the big time, thanks to their appearance in the hit ITV2 show, ‘The Big Reunion’. And 32-year-old Antony and his pals are also hard at work promoting the show’s latest national tour, which starts later this year. With fatherhood on the horizon - his fiancée Rosanna Jasmin, 28, is expecting their first child – these are busy times for Antony and he is loving every minute of it. Blue first came to prominence with their top five hit ‘All Rise’, which led to a string of number one successes. But they split in 2005 and embarked on solo projects before reforming in 2009. Two years later, they represented the United Kingdom in Eurovision. However, it was ‘The Big Reunion’ and their appearance alongside their fellow 90s pop idols that really made their comeback complete. Following that the boys: Antony, Duncan James, Lee Ryan and Simon Webbe, supported pop legends Wet Wet Wet on their UK Arena Tour. Blue are among the chart stars of the 1980s and 1990s, who will go head to head at the special 5th anniversary Lytham Proms Festival this summer in the ultimate pop battle.

It all makes for a massive fun evening of musical nostalgia on Friday, August 1, as the festival kicks off its fifth birthday. And Antony and the band are really looking forward to a fantastic evening. He said: “It’s all part of a really busy year for us and it’s going to be a great night of nostalgia at the seaside. We really can’t wait to perform at this very special event.
THE BOYS FROM BLUE
THE BOY BAND STAR OF THE 90S AND HIS BANDMATES ARE ENJOYING BEING BACK ON STAGE...DOING WHAT THEY DO BEST: ENTERTAINING THE FANS AND THAT INCLUDES A MUCH-ANTICIPATED SUMMERTIME TRIP TO THE LANCASHIRE COAST TO ENTERTAIN THE CROWDS AT THE LYTHAM PROMS FESTIVAL WEEKEND.
...AND HE’S NEVER BEEN HAPPIER
“A lot of new fans have jumped on board and are listening to Blue’s music and we’re expecting to see many of them at Lytham. We owe a lot to that show, definitely.” He confirmed: “We’re not recording at the moment, but we are busy touring, including gigs abroad, we’ll be spending time soon in Germany and Italy.
“There’s so much going on at the moment. We’re working really hard on publicity for the ‘Big Reunion Tour’ and that’s going very well.” Asked about the impact the TV show has had on the band, Antony added: “I am really surprised by the success of the show, but in a good way.
“We’re enjoying what we do. If there was a chance to do new albums we’d crack on with it, but it’s not our priority list at the moment.
“It’s a genius idea by ITV to put all these bands together. People thought they were amazing back in the day and it’s great to have their reallife stories on the screen. “If Blue were not a part of it, I’d be a real fan. The fact we are able to go on tour with it, following the success of last year’s tour, is absolutely unbelievable.
“Back in the day there were no iTunes or YouTube. We’re from the old school of CDs and tapes.”
“It’s put us in front of a new audience, as well as the hard-core boy band fans, and it really has given us a new lease of life.
“It’s different this time around. The music industry has changed a lot and we’ve had to deal with that.
The Blue boys are a close bunch and have supported each other through all their good times and bad. Antony believes that’s been the key to their successful return: “We’re all still mates; I wouldn’t be in the band, if I didn’t get on with the boys and wasn’t enjoying my music.

“I speak on behalf of all the lads when I say we have great respect for each other.” “We always said, if we got to the point where we were tired of what we were doing, we’d walk away and that’s what we did in 2005, the time seemed right then.” He explained: “We’ve always supported each other, because we are friends as we were when the band started.” He says: “I’m a bit anxious, but in a good way. I’m just excited about the baby arriving and looking forward to enjoying the experience. I can’t wait to be pushing that buggy around.” Looking at his career, he sees no end to the nostalgia boom that has pushed the band back into the spotlight and which promises to make the opening night at Lytham Proms another special experience.
“IT’S ALL PART OF A REALLY BUSY YEAR FOR US AND IT’S GOING TO BE A GREAT NIGHT OF NOSTALGIA AT THE SEASIDE. WE REALLY CAN’T WAIT TO PERFORM AT THIS VERY SPECIAL EVENT.” “People want to relive their youth. There’s even been talk of Oasis coming back together. I’m a great fan and I’d love to see them back on stage, doing what they do.
“I’ve learned about some things the hard way,” he added. “But now I’ve got a baby on the way and I don’t want to make the same mistakes I did years ago.
“We’re the same as other bands. Our story is what every band goes through, personal problems, financial problems. One minute you’re up, the next you’re down.
“I’ve got to earn money, I’ve got a mortgage and bills to pay like everyone else. As long as I’m working, I’m happy.”
“To be able to come back together and do what we’re doing now. What could be better than that?” Antony has had what he describes as “some really up and down stuff ” along the way, including well-publicised financial problems after the band first split. It has been a rollercoaster ride, he said.

He said: “The opening night of the festival has a special place in music lovers’ hearts as an evening of nostalgia and as this is our fifth birthday we’ve taken it to the next level. “Not only do we have some of the biggest stars of the 80s belting out their hits this year, we’ve got massive talent from the 90s taking to the stage as well to double the fun. “It really is a battle of the decades, and we’re hoping people will come along and support the decade that they remember and love. “But you don’t have to have been there at the time to love the music bands like Blue, Atomic Kitten and The Christians, not to mention solo artists like Heather Small, perform.

It all makes for a massive fun evening of musical nostalgia on Friday August 1st as the festival kicks off its fifth birthday. Organisers have already unveiled a host of international classical music and West End stars for the muchanticipated summer party on the coast. They have put together a stellar gathering for the Last Night of the Proms evening of the event on Sunday August 3, that includes Michael Ball and Lesley Garrett. And music legend Tom Jones, whose music spans the decades, is lined up to entertain the crowds on Saturday August 2. Friday night’s line-up is crammed with acts that topped the charts throughout the 80s and 90s.
“We’re really excited by the line-up of stars we’re bringing together for the whole three days. The 80s versus the 90s promises to get everyone into the party mood for what will be a weekend to remember.”
HOWARD JONES
The 80s team is packed with talent and includes Hue & Cry, The Christians, Howard Jones, China Crisis and Captain Sensible. Representing the 90s are pop legends Blue, Heather Small, Atomic Kitten and B*witched.
“Their works have become pop classics, loved by people of all ages, who will get a real buzz out of seeing top talent performing live.
B*WITCHED
Organisers of the three-day event unveiled a stellar line-up in January of stars for the opening evening of the big Fylde coast party in August. And it is being billed as the 80s versus the 90s – with the stars of each decade going all out to woo the crowds on Lytham Green.
Fans of Big Brother will be looking forward to seeing Lee Ryan with his Blue bandmates fresh from his appearance on the Channel 5 reality show. Tickets are on sale now and organisers are predicting another massive turnout from North West music lovers for the three days of entertainment that starts on Friday August 1. Peter Taylor, festival director at St Annes-based Cuffe & Taylor, is delighted by the Friday night line-up.

Chart stars of the 1980s and 1990s will go head to head at Lytham Proms Festival this summer in the ultimate pop battle.

The brothers are also hard at work writing new songs for their latest return to the recording studio.
The Scottish brothers and their band Hue and Cry have been performing their “indie jazz’ music for around three decades, with a short break in the early 2000s.
And, on top of that, they’ve got a summer crammed with live shows, including an appearance at the highly-acclaimed Lytham Proms Festival in August.
They’ve just been celebrating the 25th anniversary of their hugely-successful album ‘Remote’, which sold more than 300,000 copies when it was released, with a much-anticipated tour and a multi-media celebration of the work.
Greg, 48, is also enjoying the experience of being the father of a 15-month-old daughter. So these are busy times indeed. He said: “We are still getting great feedback from people, who come to see us. Last year we did a tour with The Christians and Go West, 40 shows in nine weeks and the turnout was amazing. “It was an incredible response and the whole experience was fantastic. The fact is the bands we were with are performing as well as they’ve ever done. “We had a hiatus in the late 90s and early noughties, where we needed to take some time off and get some sanity back into things. “We went off and did different things and, for five or six years, Pat didn’t sing and that has been really good for his voice.

“We’ve just now started writing for our new album and sharing ideas, so we have a good understanding of the direction we’re going in. We’re both excited about going back into the studio.” Hue and Cry are also excited about their appearance on the Fylde coast later this summer. Performing live is a vital part of what the brothers do. So what keeps them going? “We’re unemployable,” Greg joked. “We don’t know how do to anything else.” That’s not strictly true. Pat has carved out a media career and Greg has played an active and leading role in the Scottish cultural world and its music industry. However, performing is their first love. He said: “People still come up to us and say why have you not got a real job? “The reality is we work 16-18 hour days, travelling the length and breadth of these islands and it is hard work.
“He’s in fine voice now, singing better than ever and, like me, he’s really up for it. We’ve got a great band and we’re working as hard as ever.

CLASSIC MISSION
THAT HITS THE RIG
HT NOTE
S
tephen Bell is a man on a musical mission. As Associate Conductor of the acclaimed Hallé Pops series, his aim is to bring classical music to as wide an audience as possible, including many first timers. It’s a mission shared by everyone in the internationallyrenowned Hallé – which is bringing all its musical magic to this year’s Lytham Proms Festival.
“THERE’S ALWAYS A GREAT SENSE OF OCCASION WITH A LARGE AUDIENCE AND, ALTHOUGH IT IS A DIFFERENT EXPERIENCE TO A CONCERT HALL, THE SPECTACLE OF A FIREWORKS FINALE IS ALWAYS STUNNING!”
The ensemble of top symphonic talent will perform for the crowds on the green on the Sunday evening ‘Last Night of the Proms’ on August 3. And, in a special move to reach new and younger audiences, children and teenagers aged 16 and under can go free*. The Hallé’s picnic concert at Lytham Proms will also feature the UK’s leading musical star Michael Ball, as well as Britain’s most popular soprano, Lesley Garrett; classically-trained singer and X Factor finalist Rhydian Roberts; the first lady of West End musicals, Kerry Ellis, and one of the most exciting male vocal groups around, Tenors of Rock – all accompanied by the award-winning Hallé.
MICHAEL BALL

He explained the orchestra’s mission to reach out to new and younger audiences. “The Hallé has a broad and diverse programme of education projects, which includes working with individual classes, taking the whole orchestra into schools across the North West, and an entire series of concerts at The Bridgewater Hall in Manchester specifically for schools,” he said. “There are also concerts where every seat - nearly 2,000 per concert - is packed with children, who bring their own instruments and play along with pieces they have worked on. It’s a great experience.”
Now in its 156th season, the Hallé ranks among the UK’s top classical orchestras, with a distinguished history of sublime performances in this country and around the world.
Stephen, who also has strong North West links, as he was born in Bury, said: “It is always important for us to be aiming at new audiences and giving as many people as possible the chance to hear our music.
From its Manchester base, it prides itself on introducing young people to its work and the enchanting world of classical music.
“The breadth and variety of music we play – everything from classical masterpieces to opera and movie themes – is very important.
Stephen said: “I would urge people who’ve perhaps never come to a classical concert before to come along and enjoy the experience. We know they’ll have a fantastic time!
“Many people come to our concerts from around the country for the first time to hear us play different types of music. We encourage people of all ages to come and young people in particular.”
“We encourage people of all ages, especially young people, to come and enjoy the fabulous sound of the Hallé.
12
“At Lytham Proms we’ll be playing a range of well-known pieces, including film themes and other popular pieces. People who come for the first time are often surprised by how much they enjoy it. “Classical music has a wide and captivating appeal and we can promise them a spectacular evening with a fabulous picnic concert in a beautiful setting. “Ending with a dazzling fireworks display to celebrate the 5th anniversary of Lytham Proms, it promises to be a real night to remember!”
OR VISIT: WWW.LYTHAMPROMS.CO.UK
He added: “With modern technology, all types of music are so instantly available through various apps and websites, it is now easier than ever to introduce young people to our full range of music. “I think that it’s vital for young people – the younger the better – to come into contact with live orchestral music and even get the chance to play an instrument. “It’s always good for people of all ages to know more about our own country’s musical heritage. There are hundreds of teachers, as well as music services and music hubs, who are working hard to achieve exactly that. Looking ahead to the big 5th anniversary gala night at Lytham Proms, he said: “Our programme for this event will be a mix of popular classics with lighter items. “There will be some film music, together with our line up of fantastic artists performing some great pieces. “There’s sure to be a wonderful atmosphere. Certainly, as with the Hallé Pops series at The Bridgewater Hall, our intention is to provide audiences with great music in a wide variety of styles.”

TICKETS TO SUNDAY NIGHT FROM ONLY

AT THE ASK LESLEY GARRETT WHAT LIFE’S LIKE FOR HER IRE WORDS…“BUSY, BUSY, BUSY” CK-F MOMENT AND SHE’LL REPLY WITH THREE QUI That’s great to hear, especially after last year was a difficult time for the Doncaster-born classical music star, who was awarded a CBE in the 2002 New Year’s Honours List for services to music. She said: “It was a bad year; I lost both my parents and a close friend in a very short space of time. It was tough. “It did kind of knock me sideways,” she added. “But I’m feeling much better now. I’m back where my parents would want me to be.” Lesley is looking forward to a sparkling summer of music. With her appearance at Lytham Proms on Sunday, August 3, set to be a major highlight of the season.
Add to that a performance at the star-studded Olivier Awards, and there is definitely no sign of the ever-popular Yorkshire lass slowing down. In fact, with her children now at university, she’s enjoying doing even more touring, bringing her distinctive voice to an even larger audience. Lesley rattles off a host of concert dates and festivals across the country, including a forthcoming performance with the Russian National Orchestra. “I’m doing a lot more touring now than I did before the kids left home, then I tried to keep my career more home based, so I’d be there for them. “Now I can go and tour and whenever possible, Peter tries to come with me, so we can make a holiday around a concert date. I’m really enjoying that and life is very sweet at the moment.”
14
Rhydian Roberts, X-Factor runner up, and ‘the first lady’ of West End musicals Kerry Ellis, will also take to the stage as Lytham Proms celebrates its fifth birthday in full voice. Also on the bill are vocal group Tenors of Rock – and there will be a spectacular fireworks display to mark the anniversary.
“The message is this isn’t elite music. It’s simply the work of wonderful composers, who are all musically related, it’s all part of the musical world.” As well as Lytham, Lesley is no stranger to the Fylde Coast. She danced the tango at the Blackpool Winter Gardens during the first series of top TV show ‘Strictly Come Dancing’. It’s that energy and approach that endears her to her fans and all music lovers. Lesley said: “It’s lovely the public still want to hear me and I’ve no plans to slow down, not yet. “I’m guided by my voice, which is still as good as ever, and I’ll go on until it tells me ‘it’s time to hang up those tonsils, love’.” And that’s likely to be a long, long time in the future. Until then she’ll continue to be “busy, busy, busy”.

Britain’s most popular soprano first appeared in 2009 right at the start of its success story. She is full of admiration for Lytham Proms’ founders Cuffe and Taylor and those who organise and promote the UK’s summer outdoor concerts. “It was great and I really want to do it again. I’m up for it, absolutely, the organisers put on a great date and it’s not easy to create this type of festival. They are doing a brilliant job.” She continued: “The big outdoor summer events are an enormous part of what I do and they are a fantastic way of getting out to an audience that may not be the core audience for this kind of music.
