It will include the fundamentals of the accounting process, analysis of transactions, and the preparation of financial statements. This course will enhance the student’s ability to handle all aspects of accounting functions, including inventory control, depreciation, notes and accounts receivable, and control of cash. Students will utilize computerized spreadsheets to solve problems. COURSE OBJECTIVES: Obtaining a basic understanding of the accounting process and its usefulness in business decision making. Training in the fundamental principles of recording business transactions and in the techniques for organizing and presenting financial data. Obtaining a basic understanding of the accounting for partnerships and corporations. Obtaining an understanding of accounting in a manufacturing environment, including planning, control, and decision making for a manufacturing business Further understanding and analyzing financial statements using financial ratios. An understanding of financial statements of merchandising and service businesses. Enhance cognitive and analytical skills through problem solving. Improve computer skills. Strengthen communication skills through class discussion. Provide thought for career selection. MODE OF INSTRUCTION: Some lecture and discussion of the assigned chapter material will be practiced. For each class questions and problems will be assigned and will be reviewed in class. During and after completing each chapter, problems will be assigned and submitted. Some assignments will be graded. Computer spreadsheets using Google Docs will be required for completing some problems. A comprehensive computer problem may be completed at the end of the semester. Various web sites and online videos will be other resources used to engage the students in stimulating conversations.
