This is our 24th annual sale and we are proud that it’s the longest continuously running Simmental bull sale east of the Mississippi! Together we are committed and understand the importance of producing cattle that are built to increase your profit margins and try to focus on doing that better every day.

We are very proud of the cattle we will be bringing to you on April 1st in Lexington at the Bluegrass Stockyards Regional Marketplace. The offering is deep and diverse with something for everyone. We have focused on strong, long-standing pedigrees and with that comes consistency of quality that you can count on year after year.

The bulls in the offering are a set where you can find calving ease, increased pounds at weaning and carcass merit - heterosis is the cheapest tool we have and these bulls will provide it to you. The genomics are complete on them, and they are bred, born, and developed in the fescue-based environment where many of them will run, but regardless they are hardy and will thrive anywhere. The females are highly maternal, and we believe they all offer traits that can take you to the next level, regardless of what your focus is, there is something for everyone.

• We know the investment you make in genetics is significant; we will make every effort to take care of you if something goes awry.

• All bulls sold in accordance with the standard terms and conditions of the American Simmental Association.

• In addition, our standard guarantee for the bulls includes fertility for the first breeding season (90 day period immediately following turn out) and sight unseen purchase satisfaction--with a suitable replacement of equal or greater value provided (if available) or full credit given for the purchase price of the bull in next year’s sale (minus salvage value on any individual sold for slaughter).

• All other situations that are beyond our control (i.e. injury, lameness, mortality, etc.) will be handled with integrity on a case by case basis and an appropriate percent of the purchase price given as credit depending on the circumstances.

• This is not a substitute or replacement for poor management decisions. Buyer assumes all risk for injuries related to running bulls together, etc.

What a great way to lead off the 2023 Belles and Bulls of the Bluegrass Sale!  As we said last year, we want our lead bull to represent what we at WHF and our sale partners, SSS and MMF, try to produce - quality cattle that are phenotypically and genotypically appealing. J72 is flawless in his structure, massive bodied, extra stout and still stylish, while combining that with 11 EPDs in the top 40% of the breed. He’s a bull that can work for commercial, seedstock, and show cattle producers. He checks all the boxes. Qualifies for CAIP.

Really nice 3/4 blood Innovator that is backed by a cow that has paid some bills. This is the third bull we have been able to sell out of three calves she has had. No high selling son, but really good bulls for progressive commercial producers. Qualifies for CAIP.

These two bulls will be full brothers in blood. Stout and powerful bulls backed by the 2018 National Western Champion percentage bull. On the dam side, these two full sisters are making waves at WHF. These cows are full sibs to WHF SUMMER 365C, the lead donor for WHF and JS and WHF GUCCI, an up and coming donor for JS Simmental. She recently sold a bull calf for a $270,000 valuation. Black baldy Innovator son that is really solid across the board on his EPD profile. The possibility of black baldy replacements out of J24 could be exciting. He is backed by a good uddered, black baldy cow. Qualifies for CAIP.

If you are looking for a black baldy bull, the number we offer is small, but the quality is big. J224 adds to that quality. A 3/4 blood that is a younger fall born packed with quality. Long bodied, stylish and good disposition. Qualifies for CAIP.

These two bulls, Lots 111 and 112, are closely related. Both are sired by Innovator and dams are mother and daughter. This is a pair of bulls that are very similar. If you are looking to put consistency in a calf crop, this would be a good pair to buy. Qualifies for CAIP.

The Innovator calves out of Black Hawk daughters seem to work for us. Two matings like that went to purebred breeders last year. A full brother to J548 sold to Traxinger Simmental in South Dakota for $6,250 in last year’s sale. J548 has 12 EPDs in the top 50% of the breed. Qualifies for CAIP.

Stunning black baldy Ol Son. Here is one that really catches your eye in the pasture. He’s very fluid in his movement, adequate thickness and long fronted - the kind to make replacements. J246 is a maternal brother to last year’s lead off bull. He sold for $6,250 to the Harker Family. We finally have a daughter this year out of 246E. She will be headed to the replacement pen. Qualifies for CAIP.

J594 is an opportunity to buy a full brother to WHF POINT PROVEN H45, the very hot herdsire for Trennepohl Farms and WHF, a $7,500 1/2 interest purchase in 2021. He recently averaged $370/unit, a total over $74,000 in one night, at the SimMagic Sale. ROI runs in this family. At the 2021 NAILE, the Eggersman Brothers purchased a full sister to J594 for $12,000. At the 2022 NAILE, they sold her for $45,000 to Schaeffer, Boyert and Buck Creek. That is a pretty good ROI. His full sister sells as Lot 13 - be sure and check her out. Qualifies for CAIP.

Big stout rugged power bull. Talk about a bull to add the performance needed to make the scales go up. J042 is the last natural calf out of our 242Y donor. We kept her around until she was twelve. We love it when a plan comes together. In the past few seasons, we have bred several Innovator daughters to Exclusive. J371 is a bull we envisioned producing; he’s a bull with true shape and dimension, while maintaining a flawless structure. J371 can work in a variety of scenarios, producing scale smashing feeder calves and awesome replacement females. His dam does an outstanding job and Exclusives have excellent udders. We have really liked what we have seen out of Firesteel calves. J142 is a prime example of the quality. Our up and coming promotional sire, WHF/CCS/ JS Woodford, is a Firesteel son. Chris Nicholson of LCDR told us that Firesteel daughters have excellent udders. J142 looks to have some extra performance and style. 15 EPDs in the top 45% of the breed. Qualifies for CAIP.

Calving ease herdsire prospect in J375. He is in the top 2% of the breed for CE and BW. Black Hawk has been a go to heifer bull for several years. Here is another Innovator son out of a first calf heifer. All K36 needs is time. He has a bright future ahead of him. His dam is a full sister to the 2021 NAILE Simmental Junior Show champion female for the Udell family. Unfortunately, we lost his dam this year. We had big plans for her in the future. Really nice Innovator son, backed by a cow family that traces back to our great Sierra donor. EPDs show this bull to add performance being in the top 3% for YW, while also boasting 8 EPDs in the top 20% of the breed. Qualifies for CAIP.

When you walk in the bull lot, this bull stands out. Again notice the Exclusive Innovator cross. K125 has been a standout since birth. Last year one of the top selling pairs was a maternal sister going to Kelly Moore in Tennessee. Look up his maternal sister 25J (Lot 24) selling this year. Big feet and good udders run in this family. K125 is a bull that can excel in many aspects of the beef industry. Qualifies for CAIP.

Summer is solidifying herself as one of the breed’s leading donors after having a show career second to none. She has had success on the female side producing the 2021 NAILE Simmental Junior Show champion female, and another maternal sib to these bulls was the $58,000 high selling female of the 2022 Belles and Bulls of the Bluegrass Sale. On the bull production side, she has one of the hottest sons in the breed in WHF/CCS/JS Double Up G365 and another up and coming son WHF/CCS/JS Woodford J001. The dollar figures she has produced continues to grow. The sire of these bulls, ES Right Time, is making waves in the breed as well siring high sellers across the country. We could write a lot more about both sides of their pedigree, but just look these bulls up sale day and decide if they work for you. This is a well-balanced, elegant female with a nice heifer calf at side. 63J is doing an excellent job with her calf. A full sister to the dam of 63J was the 2019-2020 Show Heifer of the Year, and another one was the dam of the high selling bull in the Effling family’s bull sale.  No matter the tattoo on the Andie Innovator daughter, they all produce well - just look at Lots 5, 22, 107, 108, 121 and 128. In doing some research, when I pulled up the EPDs on her heifer calf, I found that only thirteen animals in the whole Simmental database have every EPD in the top 45% of the breed. This calf, 63L, has 16 out of 18 EPDs in the top 45%. Talk about a balanced profile on a nice female.

Simply put, Jojo is awesome. Big feet, perfect structure, huge middled, thick topped and pretty fancy. This one screams donor cow build. Then, throw in that her mother is twelve years old with monster feet and a good udder. Then, add the Double Up aspect. He is producing some great ones. Probably dumb selling this one, but, oh well, we have feed bills to pay. We believe in repeat business and think this one will bring you back for more. She’s been a crowd favorite of many outsiders and she is a WHF family favorite for sure. We can’t wait to see a donor photo of this one. 35J should calve after the sale to LCDR 198H.

548J is going to be just a bigger version of her page mate, 18J. These two Epic daughters are built right and doing a great job in production. The bull mates to these we sold the past few years were well accepted. They are cattle that have a shot more power. Check out this heifer calf on her side; she is pretty neat. Then study her EPD profile. She becomes really neat. No outlier EPDs but consistently in the top cut of the breed.

Be sure and check out the Ol Son progeny in the sale and evaluate the feet and leg structure on them - they are second to none. 448J is already in production with a heifer calf at side. This calf will add value. Strong EPD profile capped off by both Indexes being in the top 15%.

This is quite an opportunity to get one of the best females we have ever made available to the public. The Right To Love family is well known for consistently producing cattle with great phenotype, they have done it for years for some of the breeds top programs, producing many champions and breed leading herd sires, including Quantum Leap and Lover Boy. The mating of Right To Love Z338, who has produced numerous high sellers herself, to the tried and true performance sire CCR Cowboy Cut really worked. This moderately made female is beautiful fronted and stout ended, while maintaining a brood cow look. Selling with Clear Advantage heifer calf at side born 2/27/23. The Serena cow family continues to be very popular, producing numerous high sellers and champions, and females like this are part of the reason why. This nicely designed daughter, by Sure Value, is square hipped and stout made. The mating of J306 to the Triangle J and ABS Stud KBHR Bold Ruler should produce an intriguing individual blending show ring looks and some of the breeds top EPDs. She will calve before sale day.

QUICK REFERENCE TO ASA EPDS AND $ INDEXES

Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and –5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is knowing what units they are expressed in. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, A would be expected to sire 15-pounds more weaning weight than B. If calving ease were the trait, A would be expected to sire 15-percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we’d expect A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. $ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in. Through well conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes:

All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.

Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.

Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a +50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed. KENTUCKY COST SHARE (CAIP)

The excitement around Point Proven continues to grow with a couple of his first daughters selling for an average of $125,000. He had a big SimMagic, selling 150 units of sexed semen for an average of $380/unit and 50 units of conventional semen to average $320/ unit. Embryo lots sired by Point Proven averaged $1900/per egg in SimMagic. Study the Lots 4 and 5 daughters and Lot 13, a full sister to him. Also, feel free to come to the farm and study the replacement females sired by him. Maybe more exciting are the bull calves. He is proving to be a heifer bull that will add look, help paperwork and still keep some punch in the bull calves. Selling 50 Units total, in 10 packages of 5 units each.
