SIMGENETICS BORN AND RAISED IN FESCUE COUNTRYTM built on real PERFORMANCE AND EYE APPEAL!
We would like to invite you to join us at the 2023 Belles and Bulls of the Bluegrass Sale. This is our 24th annual sale and we are proud that it’s the longest continuously running Simmental bull sale east of the Mississippi! Together we are committed and understand the importance of producing cattle that are built to increase your profit margins and try to focus on doing that better every day.
We are very proud of the cattle we will be bringing to you on April 1st in Lexington at the Bluegrass Stockyards Regional Marketplace. The offering is deep and diverse with something for everyone. We have focused on strong, long-standing pedigrees and with that comes consistency of quality that you can count on year after year.
The bulls in the offering are a set where you can find calving ease, increased pounds at weaning and carcass merit - heterosis is the cheapest tool we have and these bulls will provide it to you. The genomics are complete on them, and they are bred, born, and developed in the fescue-based environment where many of them will run, but regardless they are hardy and will thrive anywhere. The females are highly maternal, and we believe they all offer traits that can take you to the next level, regardless of what your focus is, there is something for everyone.
We hope you can come and appreciate this fantastic set of cattle in person, and sit in the seats and bid on them—they are worth the trip from anywhere! As always, we will be broadcasting the sale live online on DVAuction.com and all videos will be available there. See page 4 for our guarantee and some additional information about what we believe sets us apart. Please reach out to any of our consignors or our consultants, Ryan Haefner, Dalton Lundy, Brent Tolle, Thomas Lundy, Lydell Meier, Todd Alford, or Chad Joines for assistance. We feel that we have assembled a top-notch marketing team and that you have a lot of options to evaluate these cattle.
We will be continuing to communicate via Facebook, follow us at facebook.com/ bellesbullsofthebluegrass for real-time updates, sale order, etc. and www.bellesandbullsofthebluegrass.com. We hope to see you soon in Lexington. Please give anyone involved in the sale a call if you have questions or want to find a time to come see the cattle before their arrival in Lexington.
Thanks and enjoy this fantastic set of cattle that combine phenotype with genotype and common sense on April 1st!

FOCUSED ON CALVING EASE, INCREASED POUNDS AT WEANING AND CARCASS MERIT.
WHF Double Up J72
What a great way to lead off the 2023 Belles and Bulls of the Bluegrass Sale! As we said last year, we want our lead bull to represent what we at WHF and our sale partners, SSS and MMF, try to produce - quality cattle that are phenotypically and genotypically appealing. J72 is flawless in his structure, massive bodied, extra stout and still stylish, while combining that with 11 EPDs in the top 40% of the breed. He’s a bull that can work for commercial, seedstock, and show cattle producers. He checks all the boxes. Qualifies for CAIP.
WAYWARD HILL FARMJ024 is one that is going to give you extra performance in your calves. He reads to have high growth in his EPD profile and shows the same when you look at him. Cow side of his pedigree traces back to a full sister in blood to the famous WHF/PRS/HPF Alley 247Y cow. Make replacements or sell good calves, J024 can do both. Qualifies for CAIP.
LOT 101
A Powerful Double Up son that is out of a first calf heifer. We chose to lead the sale off with Double Up sons. The consistency and quality of these five bulls has been exciting to see in the bull pen. This mating is proving to be pretty consistent. A full sister will be headed to the replacement pen. Qualifies for CAIP.
LOT 102
WHF Double Up J024
WHF Double Up J845
WHF/JS/CCS DOUBLE UP G365 W/C DOUBLE DOWN 5014E
If you are looking for a Double Up son with extra look and really good structure, then this is your bull. J55 is really extended and comes out of his shoulders high. Double Up looks to be passing his flawless feet and leg structure on to his calves. Qualifies for CAIP.
You should notice a theme in these Double Up sons. Four of the five are out of first calf Innovator daughters. This mating is working. J875 is backed by one of our favorite family lines. It is doubtful you see any of these females on the market. They stay in our pastures. Good feet, nice udders and raise good calves. Perfect bull for making replacement females. Qualifies for CAIP. WHF/JS/CCS DOUBLE UP G365
Exciting power bull to start off the Innovator section. J383 boasted an 811# adjusted weaning weight. Check out his EPD profile top to bottom - it is impressive. 12 EPDs in the top 30%. Beef bull deluxe to add pounds and pay weight to your calf crop. Qualifies for CAIP.
LOT 105
Really nice 3/4 blood Innovator that is backed by a cow that has paid some bills. This is the third bull we have been able to sell out of three calves she has had. No high selling son, but really good bulls for progressive commercial producers. Qualifies for CAIP.
LOT 106
WHF Innovator J383
WHF Innovator J73
These two bulls will be full brothers in blood. Stout and powerful bulls backed by the 2018 National Western Champion percentage bull. On the dam side, these two full sisters are making waves at WHF. These cows are full sibs to WHF SUMMER 365C, the lead donor for WHF and JS and WHF GUCCI, an up and coming donor for JS Simmental. She recently sold a bull calf for a $270,000 valuation. These bulls will also be full sibs in blood to CCS/WHF OL SON 48F. If you believe in buying into cow families, these are two bulls for you. Check out Lot 5 - she is a maternal sib to J368. Qualifies for CAIP.
Innovator
Black baldy Innovator son that is really solid across the board on his EPD profile. The possibility of black baldy replacements out of J24 could be exciting. He is backed by a good uddered, black baldy cow. Qualifies for CAIP.
LOT 109
If you are looking for a black baldy bull, the number we offer is small, but the quality is big. J224 adds to that quality. A 3/4 blood that is a younger fall born packed with quality. Long bodied, stylish and good disposition. Qualifies for CAIP.
LOT 110
WHF Innovator
WHF Innovator J224
These two bulls, Lots 111 and 112, are closely related. Both are sired by Innovator and dams are mother and daughter. This is a pair of bulls that are very similar. If you are looking to put consistency in a calf crop, this would be a good pair to buy. Qualifies for CAIP.
The Innovator calves out of Black Hawk daughters seem to work for us. Two matings like that went to purebred breeders last year. A full brother to J548 sold to Traxinger Simmental in South Dakota for $6,250 in last year’s sale. J548 has 12 EPDs in the top 50% of the breed. Qualifies for CAIP.

LOT 113
Here is a set of twin brothers. They were raised on the cow together. The 35 line has been really good to us. The mother of these two bred back on time while nursing them. Their granddam, 35Y, is still running our pastures with perfect feet and a good udder at twelve years old. Qualifies for CAIP.
LOT 114
WHF Innovator J38

This is the youngest of our fall bull offering. 16 EPDs at or above breed average. A bull that continues to progress. Qualifies for CAIP.

We have been fortunate to own and run Innovator. He is still as sound today as he was when he won Denver in 2018. Even better our last of fall calving still makes functional bulls and females. J318 is one of the few percentage bulls in the offering. Qualifies for CAIP.

Stunning black baldy Ol Son. Here is one that really catches your eye in the pasture. He’s very fluid in his movement, adequate thickness and long fronted - the kind to make replacements. J246 is a maternal brother to last year’s lead off bull. He sold for $6,250 to the Harker Family. We finally have a daughter this year out of 246E. She will be headed to the replacement pen. Qualifies for CAIP.
WAYWARD HILL FARMJ594 is an opportunity to buy a full brother to WHF POINT PROVEN H45, the very hot herdsire for Trennepohl Farms and WHF, a $7,500 1/2 interest purchase in 2021. He recently averaged $370/unit, a total over $74,000 in one night, at the SimMagic Sale. ROI runs in this family. At the 2021 NAILE, the Eggersman Brothers purchased a full sister to J594 for $12,000. At the 2022 NAILE, they sold her for $45,000 to Schaeffer, Boyert and Buck Creek. That is a pretty good ROI. His full sister sells as Lot 13 - be sure and check her out. Qualifies for CAIP.
Big stout rugged power bull. Talk about a bull to add the performance needed to make the scales go up. J042 is the last natural calf out of our 242Y donor. We kept her around until she was twelve. Every calf she raised was on the high end if not the highest weaning calf every year. Qualifies for CAIP.

We love it when a plan comes together. In the past few seasons, we have bred several Innovator daughters to Exclusive. J371 is a bull we envisioned producing; he’s a bull with true shape and dimension, while maintaining a flawless structure. J371 can work in a variety of scenarios, producing scale smashing feeder calves and awesome replacement females. His dam does an outstanding job and Exclusives have excellent udders. He has the look, presence, and soundness to make good show cattle, all while adding an extra shot of muscle. The versatility of this one gets us excited! Qualifies for CAIP.

The reason is, we won’t sell them. Sometimes you just have to be greedy and keep certain ones. J876 is an all-around good bull. Qualifies for CAIP.
Another solid Exclusive son backed by an Innovator cow. See the theme we talked about earlier. This combo worked for us and there are more to come in the spring bull section. Last year we sold a maternal brother to J80 for $5,000. Qualifies for CAIP.

We really like this trio of flush brothers. You can take your pick if you want a solid black son or baldy son of the legendary WHF and JS donor WHF SUMMER 365C. Summer is solidifying herself as one of the breed’s leading donors after having a show career second to none. She has had success on the female side producing the 2021 NAILE Simmental Junior Show champion female, and another maternal sib to these bulls was the $58,000 high selling female of the 2022 Belles and Bulls of the Bluegrass Sale. On the bull production side, she has one of the hottest sons in the breed in WHF/CCS/JS Double Up G365 and another up and coming son WHF/CCS/JS Woodford J001. He is absolutely massive in every dimension and is backed by cow power on both sides with the Werning owned K-LER Dolly’s Queen cow on the top side and the famous Right to Love 015U on the bottom side, with his dam being a full sister to the great herd sires, Quantum Leap and Lover Boy. What an exciting opportunity to buy a flush on one of our best donors at WHF. Delilah continues to impress us with every calf crop and every mating. The amount of top end herd bulls she has produced is continuing to grow. Her most notable son is WHF Point Proven H45 who sired two females averaging $125,000 for Trennepohl Farms and Lots 4 and 5 in this catalog. Another son, WHF Entourage H450, owned with Boyert Show Cattle was Senior Calf Champion at the 2022 Cattleman’s Congress. The latest son to create excitement is WHF Greater Good J45. He is owned with 3 Aces, Rosebud Cattle and Jared Werning Cattle. On the female side of the show ring, the most recent excitement came from a daughter at the 2022 NAILE. The Eggersman family exhibited a daughter that had everyone talking. WHF Delilah 450H was Reserve Champion Junior Yearling. She is now owned by Boyert, Buck Creek and Schaeffer. These are just a few of the highlights. The major highlights for us personally are the daughters in production grazing our pastures. All have flawless structure and perfect udders just like Delilah. The fall born calves in this sale and in our pastures continue to impress us as well. There could be the next great herd sire or show heifer in this flush. Be sure and check out lots 1, 2, and 13 that are direct daughters of Delilah. Eggs recently sold for an average of $2,250/per egg in SimMagic. Feel free to reach out to discuss her flush records and where the work will be done. Terms of flush will be guaranteeing six #1 eggs with a cap of twelve eggs.

Selling 1/2 Interest
What a way to start off the female division of the 2023 Belles and Bulls of the Bluegrass. This year we are offering 1/2 interest in WHF Delilah 456K. We have been fortunate to raise some elite females over the years. I am willing to say this might be the best female, at this age, that has ever walked the pastures at WHF. The big question is, what can she do in the future to solidify that statement? 456K combines our elite donors Delilah, Summer, Andie and Angels Envy. We believe in stacking cow families and she is stacking the best we have to offer. Everything about this female is elite. The sheer power and mass of this female is impressive. She takes structural correctness to a whole new level. Her disposition is amazing. This one is built as if you took those four donors listed above, along with their best attributes and gave them to 456K. Lot 2 is a full sister. Lot 13 is a 3/4 sister. Please reach out with questions on this elite female about the partnership.
Don’t let this ones big sister 456K, Lot 1, overshadow her. This one is chasing hard on her. She just started in this world a little over a month later. All the same things hold true for this one as her sister. She is massive, powerful and her structure is awesome. Her disposition is great as well. This one is going to be fun to watch! This mating has proven to work with these two females and they have a brother that we are also really high on. Study the whole picture of this family sale day. Double Up bulls, breds and opens are all functional cattle. The Delilah bred progeny are easy to find. Great females start from great foundations.

Stunning red baldies are always fun. They catch the attention of everyone and they are easy to remember. 145K is a sleek necked, big bodied female. She is a maternal sib to our lead donor Delilah. Take note of the fact that these five open heifers have one female in common in their pedigree, and that is Angels Envy and backed by the breed legend Bankroll on the sire side. He has sired countless promotional sires and champion show heifers. This one has a big future showing but maybe a bigger future in the donor pen.
WAYWARD HILL FARMHere is a September prospect that gets better every day. Long sided, long fronted and plenty of shape. All she needs is someone to be patient and let her come together. WAYWARD HILL FARMThis is a good place to start our fall bred heifers. Like her full sibs in blood in the sale (Lots 36 and 149) she brings maternal strength and common sense with a family history of quality udders, powerful structure, and longevity. 114J is a bit more striking and extended in her design than her other family members in the sale giving her a bit of a different twist. This is a prime example of what we try to do with most of our program - high level phenotype and strong genotype. This is a package that shows that progression. Next generation moving forward with better EPDs, while maintaining phenotype and not chasing extremes. We do sample extremes in phenotype and genotype, but the key word is sample! Slowly building EPD profile of multiple generations. We feel these cattle are consistently better individuals. 036J and her calf are prime examples of that. Andy is a moderate framed, easy fleshing, maternally oriented female out of our consistent Swain Intuition 015X donor family. We like the mating of KCC1 Exclusive on these Lock N Load x 015X daughters (see Lots 14 and 149) and think being bred to sexed heifer semen of the Schooley Standout bull will compliment her nicely. What you can expect are no-nonsense, common sense kind of cattle with quality udders, powerful structure, and longevity on a consistent basis from this family.

Cow families and the maternal side matter for us, 001H is out of one of our best donors, Swain Intuition 015X and going back to the foundation Mindy donor. Her outcross pedigree makes her an interesting tool with wide open mating options. Her first calf by OMF Epic is excellent and sells as lot 151. We liked him so well we bred her back to the popular Epic son, Schooley Standout with sexed heifer semen. Good young cow that is just getting started.

All bulls purchased through the Kentucky CAIP program are required to have genomically enhanced EPDs or have an accuracy value for Calving Ease EPD of .25 or above to be considered. Bulls denoted in the catalog with the ASA DNA logo have genomically enhanced EPDs. You can use the Kentucky Bull Assessment Tool to determine if they qualify for the program. As always, please contact your county extension office for more information and assistance.

QUICK REFERENCE TO ASA EPDS AND $ INDEXES
Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and –5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is knowing what units they are expressed in. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, A would be expected to sire 15-pounds more weaning weight than B. If calving ease were the trait, A would be expected to sire 15-percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we’d expect A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes visit www.simmental.org. Listed below are the units ASA EPDs are expressed in:
All-Purpose Index (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an allpurpose-sire scenario. (See below for more details.)
Birth Weight (BW): Pounds of birth weight.
Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers.
Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in firstcalving daughters.
Milk (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk.
Marbling (MRB): Marbling score.
Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth.
Ribeye Area (REA): Square inches of ribeye.
Stayability (STAY): Percent of daughters remaining in the cowherd at 6 years of age.
Terminal Index (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario. (See below for more details.)
Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight.
Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight.
$ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in. Through well conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes:
All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.
Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.
Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a +50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes visit www.simmental.org.
The excitement around Point Proven continues to grow with a couple of his first daughters selling for an average of $125,000. He had a big SimMagic, selling 150 units of sexed semen for an average of $380/unit and 50 units of conventional semen to average $320/ unit. Embryo lots sired by Point Proven averaged $1900/per egg in SimMagic. Study the Lots 4 and 5 daughters and Lot 13, a full sister to him. Also, feel free to come to the farm and study the replacement females sired by him. Maybe more exciting are the bull calves. He is proving to be a heifer bull that will add look, help paperwork and still keep some punch in the bull calves. Selling 50 Units total, in 10 packages of 5 units each.
